Chapter 11: Whataya want from me
A/N: Aftermath of the Chuunin exam and at least one party perhaps more we'll see where my muse takes this I often just know the major points and the rest just comes out, I don't know what I'm writing until I'm actually typing it.
   Hikari opened her eyes squinting into the bright overhead lights, her head hurt and her muscles ached. Naruto poked his head into her field of vision, a large grin on his face, sporting a black eye and butterfly sutures along the bridge of his nose, She spotted Sasuke leaning against the wall looking indifferent, his arm in a sling.
   “She's awake,” Naruto said loudly, too loudly, she grimaced.
   Neji appeared on her other side, “How do you feel?” he asked her with a smile. His voice is at a much more manageable level.
   “Like I got into a fight with a brick wall and lost.” she groaned causing Naruto to laugh. “Shut up you're making my head hurt.” The tournament must have been over, she had won her first two matches but then she had been pitted against Naruto. She had known she wasn't going to walk away from that one, he had a lot more stamina than she could ever hope to possess. He must have knocked her unconscious “What's the verdict?”
   “I had to face Sasuke last, I beat his ass good.” Naruto told her. She heard Sasuke grunt in response.
   “Nice, have the lords made their rulings yet?”
   “Congratulations on making Chuunin,” Neji says, bringing a smile to her face.
   “How long have I been out?”
   “A couple hours,” Sasuke answered her. “Naruto insisted on sticking around until you came to.”
   “Ino, Shikamaru and Chouji are waiting in the hall they wanted to congratulate you too, Hinata came by too but she had to leave to take care of some business,” Neji explained to her.
   “Why are they in the hall?”
   “Only three visitors at a time, doctors orders. Shizune should be here soon to check on you, Tsunade-sama is attending a dinner with the Lords and Ladies along with Gaara, but she came to check on you before she left.”
   “Help me up?” she asked. Naruto grabbed one hand and Neji took the other as they pulled her up. Neji kept a grip on her which she was grateful for when she felt the room begin to spin, “thanks. Shall we let the others have their turn?”
   Neji nodded and ushered Naruto out of the room, Sasuke needed no such encouragement. Team ten entered the room a moment later, Ino embraced her tightly causing her to wince, must have cracked a rib or two, she thought to herself. “Thanks for sticking around guys.”
   “It was no problem,” Ino told her waving a hand in the air. “How's your head? Naruto dealt you a a pretty massive blow.”
   “I'm pretty sure he had a wrecking ball hidden up his sleeve,” she joked. “Did anyone else make Chuunin?”
   “One kid from Suna apart from the three of you.” Shikamaru answered her.
   Shizune entered the room behind them, “I heard you were awake, you can leave whenever you feel well enough, Tsunade-sama wants you to come back if you feel any adverse effects though.” She handed her a bottle of pills, “Pain killers for your ribs.”
   “Thank you,” She turned to Ino, “alright help me get out of here, I'm really starting to hate hospitals.” Ino and Shikamaru stood on either side of her, just in case she needed extra support as they exited the room, Neji took Shikamaru's place, slipping an arm around her waist.
   “You sure you don't want to wait?” Neji asked her.
   “I'm sure, I just want to get out of here, I can rest back at the house,” she assured him. Once they were outside he scooped her up into his arms. “Put me down,” she squeaked at him, “I'm perfectly capable of walking.”
   “Let me think about that, no, I think I'll keep you right here.” she pouted in his arms but made no move to argue further.
   Shikamaru and Chouji excused themselves from the group stating that they were going to grab a bite to eat, Ino stuck around explaining that she needed to get a look at the place so she knew what she had to work with for the party tomorrow. When they reached Sasuke's, Neji placed her on the couch rearranging some pillows behind her back and sat next to her, her feet extending over his thighs.
   Ino took a good long look around as Naruto claimed a spot on the floor in front of Hikari and Sasuke sat in his armchair. “You have a good sized place here, it will work out nicely,” She told Sasuke.
   “No, I'm not going to have everyone running amok around the place fucking things up. You guys can use the dojo to set up in, there's more than enough space there for everyone.”
   Ino nodded her acceptance, after all they were lucky Sasuke had agreed at all, “Can I see what I have to work with then?”
   “Down the hall, first door to the right, you'll find the stairs that take you down to the dojo.”
   Ino returned a few minutes later, “Naruto, Neji can I talk to the two of you for a minute?” The guys joined her in the hallway. “Naruto you're still helping me set up tomorrow right? He nodded, “Good, Neji can you keep Hikari out of the house tomorrow?”
   “I can't, I need to go to by my storage locker to look for something, I don't know how long it will take to find it.”
   “I guess we could stick her with Shikamaru tomorrow for a couple games of Shogi, but that will only be good for a couple hours,” Ino looked contemplative.
   “Oi Teme come here for a minute!” Naruto shouted.
   Sasuke joined them. “What dobe?”
   “We need you to keep Hikari busy tomorrow so we can get set up?”
   “Why doesn't he do it?” he shot Neji a look.
   “I have my own thing to arrange.”
   “Whatever, how long do I need to keep her busy for?”
   “Until six, we'll be set up by then. We're going to start around two.”
   “Hn.”
   “Alright,” Ino said beaming, “I'll see you all tomorrow, Bye Hikari!” Hikari called out her own farewell and the boys rejoined her in the living room.
   “I'm starving,” Hikari announced, “but I don't want to cook.”
   “I'll go pick something up,” Neji offered, “You guys want anything?” Everyone gave there orders and Neji headed out.
   After dinner Naruto headed home and they decided to call it an early night, tomorrow would prove to be an exhausting day.
   The three of them spent the morning lounging around the house until Ino and Naruto showed up, their arms laden with decorations. “Okay get out,” Naruto ordered them, acting like he owned the place.
   “I need to run an errand,” Neji told Hikari, “I'll see you later okay?” she nodded and accepted his kiss before she wandered off with Sasuke.
   They walked around the village for a few hours before that got old, “Where do you want to go?” Sasuke asked her.
   “I really don't care,” she said as she took note of the third Naruto she had seen today, he must have been using shadow clones to assist with the set up, this one was carrying a trash can filled with alcohol. “You don't need to babysit me know, I am well aware that they don't want me there for the set up. I'm not going to interfere.”
   “Hn.”
   “Fine, let's go up to mount Hokage and cloud watch for awhile.”
   Sasuke sighed and followed her, “They should have stuck Shikamaru with you, cloud watching is right up his alley.”
   Hikari shrugged, “If nothing else the walk will waste time.” The reached their destination and she lay back in the snow staring up at the sky.
   “Aren't you cold?”
   “I had the foresight to dress appropriately, not my fault you didn't.”
   “I never said I was cold.” they were silent for a long time, “So how do you suggest I go about this?”
   “Go about what exactly?” she inquired.
   “Naruto.”
   “Ahh I see, so you're going to take my advice then.”
   Sasuke gave her a look that clearly stated, Don't make me regret asking you. “I'm not really the type to bare my soul to someone, in case you hadn't noticed.”
   Hikari snickered, “I would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to have noticed. I don't know, why don't you just walk up and kiss him or something, you're both very physical beings,” she joked.
   “And what if you're wrong about him? Naruto has always been very hands on with everyone, so what if you're mistaken?”
   Hikari sighed heavily, she knew she wasn't wrong but she could understand Sasuke's apprehension, he wasn't used to letting people in and would not take rejection well. “I do have one thought,” she paused. “Ino is bringing her karaoke machine tonight, so do a song for him. Though something like that maybe too subtle for someone like him.”
   “You're joking right, I don't sing.”
   “Yeah right I've heard you in the shower,” she laughed at him, as he glared at her.
   “Allow me to reiterate then, I don't sing in front of people.”
   “That's where the liquid courage comes in.”
   “What are you babbling on about?”
   “Booze, Sasuke. Get a few drinks into you until you feel confident enough to do it. I know the perfect song too.”
   Sasuke looked at the time, it was just shy of half past five. “Come on we can go back now.”
   They stopped to grab some coffee on the way, to warm themselves. Ino was waiting for them at the door when they got back, “Come on everyone else is already here.”
   “Great,” Sasuke said sarcastically.
   They proceeded downstairs into the basement, there were streamers draped from the ceiling, along with a huge banner saying Congratulations. The karaoke machine was already set up and Lee was currently singing the song kung fu fighting. Naruto was off to the side chatting with Kiba.
   “You really outdid yourself Ino.” Hikari told her, causing her to beam with pride.
   “I'm glad you like it.”
   Neji came up behind her and wrapped her in his arms. "Save me," he whispered.
   "What do you need saving from love?"
   "Lee keeps trying to get me to sing with him," he explained in mock horror. Hikari laughed, it was music to his ears.
   She looked up to see Lee making his way towards them after his song. "Neji-san you must join me in this, the time of our shining youth, we must celebrate with a song and hold nothing back."
   "Lee dear," Hikari said sweetly, "as wonderful as that sounds he really must decline, I haven't gotten to see him all day and we need to discuss something." He looked crestfallen, "however it looks like Sai is a little lonely over there, perhaps he would like to join you for a duet," Hikari suggested slyly. She watched as Lee brightened up and bounced over towards Sai.
   She felt Neji relax behind her, “Thank you, come with me I have something to show you,” he beckoned her to follow him. He ascended both sets of stairs and into their room. “I got you something,” he told her and sat her down on the bed.
   “What's the occasion?” she asked.
   “I was going to give it to you on your birthday,” he explained, suddenly feeling nervous. Maybe he should have gone about this differently and just had her open it with the other gifts. He hoped that she didn't think the wrong thing. He took a deep breath and handed her a small gift wrapped box.
   “Neji, you didn't....” he silenced her with a kiss, “No take backs remember.”
   She looked down and began to remove the tape, doing her best not to tear the paper. She soon found herself holding a black velvet ring box. Her breath caught in her throat, what was he thinking, was she ready for something like this, she loved him but they had been trying to take things slow. A ring, after only five months was not slow in any way. Still she pressed ahead, opening the ring box she found a small detailed silver ring in the shape of a snake, two small green stones where the eyes should be. It was beautiful, and most definitely not an engagement ring, she resisted the urge to sigh in relief. She still felt it a slightly odd gift, she very rarely wore jewelry of any kind, he knew how she felt about needless accessories. However she could tell he had put a lot of thought into it though. “Thank you it's gorgeous.”
   Neji took the box from her and removed the ring, “I know you're not big on trinkets...”
   “No I love it really,” she assured him quickly.
   Neji felt himself smile at that, “Let me finish,” he said gently and she nodded, “That's why I chose this one, because if you give it a little twist here,” he gave the middle loop a quarter turn to the right and a little spike popped out, “Poison tipped.” He watched at her eyes lit up with delight, he chuckled “Now I know you really like it.”
   “I liked it before,” She insisted, “but I love it even more now.” She watched as he twisted it back to its original position and placed it on her left index finger. “Thank you.” She pulled his lips to meet hers in an intense kiss.
   “We should get back,” he whispered. “They'll wonder where we are.”
   Hikari reluctantly agreed. The party was partially for them, If they were gone too long it would be noticed. As soon as they returned to the party Ino and Naruto both cornered them.
   “Where did you guys go?” Naruto asked. “We wanted to cut the cake.”
   “Cake? What cake?” Hikari asked.
   “Your birthday cake,” he said as if it was obvious.
   “Neji why don't you help me grab the cake, Naruto why don't you introduce Hikari to Temari and Gaara, she hasn't met them yet.” Ino grabbed Neji by the arm and dragged him away.
“Good idea, come on Hikari." Naruto steered Hikari in the direction of the Kazekage and his sibling. She tensed, remembering what Neji had told her about their role in the attempt to retrieve Sasuke.
Neji noticed her change in posture from across the room before Ino forced him up the stairs. She rounded on him as soon as the door closed behind them.
"Spill," she demanded.
"I don't know what your are talking about."
"Hikari was not wearing that ring when she left the room with you. You gave it to her didn't you?" Neji nodded and explained about the ring and how it worked. Ino cuffed him upside the head, "don't do something like that ever again, you probably nearly gave to poor girl a heart attack. When giving a ring to a girl, there is only one reason you ever, ever, keep it a secret, and that's when it's and engagement ring. If you for some reason feel the need to get her another ring at some point don't make it a surprise you tell her, or better yet have her with you when you buy it. Stick to other types of jewelry if you want to surprise her. Now come on let's bring this cake down."
Neji trailed behind her pondering her words, he had had no idea there was so much etiquette when it came to gift giving, this is why he normally didn't bother with this kind of thing.
"Temari! Gaara! I have someone I want you to meet," Naruto called drawing the attention of the two sand-nin to them.
"Hikari this is Gaara and Temari. They are Kankouro's brother and sister, you remember him from Chouji's party right."
"It is an honour to meet you Kazekage-sama, Temari-san." Hikari replied bowing low.
"You're the Hokage's neice, correct?" Gaara inquired and Hikari nodded.
Temari felt the need to break the tension for the poor girl, Gaara could be very intimidating the first time meeting him. Most of the young shinobi of Konoha had grown somewhat used to him thanks to Naruto but she knew this girl was new to the village. "We were just admiring Sasuke's weapons collection," Temari gestured behind her, " it's very impressive."
Hikari took one look at where they had been standing a tensed further, they had been right in front of her Hone-toushin. "Yes it is," she tried to smile. Music began to play, the familiar opening bars of a song caused Hikari to relax, thanking the Gods for the distraction. But why now? Sasuke had grabbed the microphone.

Everyone was watching him, it was obvious to nearly all of them who he had meant this for. Except for the one person who he had wanted to get it.
Hikari wanted to slap him upside the head, maybe knock some sense into the blond idiot standing next to her, who was currently ranting about how he never knew Sasuke could sing and how well he had done. Sasuke slowly approached them.
Ino and Neji had frozen by the door when Sasuke began to sing. When she saw how clueless Naruto looked, not only of the song's meaning but of the reactions of every one around him she knew she would have to give him a little push in the right direction.
Sasuke was now standing close to Naruto, waiting, hoping for a response, "Time for cake," Ino called out as she approached, accidentally, knocking Naruto into Sasuke causing their lips to meet. It was the academy all over again, only this time before Naruto could jump back, Sasuke snaked an around his neck pulling him closer, Naruto's eyes fell shut, allowing himself to be drawn further into the kiss.
The whole scene was interrupted by a loud crash, followed by Lee running across the room, "Sakura-chan please wait."
"Sweet two birds with one stone!" Kiba yelled out, effectively breaking the spell of silence that had settled upon the room.
"Let's eat," Hikari said happily, throwing one arm around Sasuke's shoulders and the other around Naruto's. Once they made their way to the table, where Ino was serving up the cake, she allowed some space between Naruto, who looked slightly dazed, and Sasuke who had a smug look on his face. "That turned out better than expected, nice timing by the way, but I never expected you to pull it off sober."
"I didn't, I've been taking shots since we got back."
Hikari nodded approvingly, "See I told you know one would care other than Sakura. In fact judging by their reactions they've all just been waiting for one of you to grow some balls and make a move."
After cake Neji disappeared with Naruto and Ino, returning a minutes later with a large trash can and an entire stack of red plastic cups.
"Who wants Jungle Juice?" Naruto let out a yell and people began to line up.
Neji rejoined Hikari, "I'm not sure you want to drink that," he told her, "the amount of alcohol, it's rather intimidating."
Hikari laughed, "I have had jungle juice before," she informed him, "back home, it was a main staple of my mothers house parties, that and beer."
"You're mother let you drink?" He asked incredulously.
"She was usually too drunk to know or even care," she answered darkly. “Let’s not talk about this now, Okay? You should at least try the jungle juice, I promise it tastes better than the process would lead you to believe. At least if Naruto didn’t go over board.” She led him over to get a drink. She took a drink and smiled, “It’s actually a lot weaker than I’m used to.”
“Are you going to sing tonight?” he asked her curiously.
“I don’t think I can get away with not doing at least a couple of songs,” she laughed, “I’m going to get some more alcohol into me first though.”
“Try not to overdo it this time,” he cautioned her.
   After an hour or so Ino approached her, “Want to do a song with us?” she asked.
   “Who is us?”
   “Temari, Tenten and myself, we’re going to do one together.” Hikari nodded and followed Ino over to the karaoke machine.
   “What song was it you wanted to do?” Temari asked Ino as they each grabbed a microphone.
   “This one,” she pointed at the screen as she selected the song and the music started.

   “Ino said you were good, I thought she was exaggerating,” Temari gave her an appraising look. “Do you do sing often?”
   “More now than I used to, it’s always been an escape for me, something to focus on other than what we do, does that make sense?” Hikari knew she was feeling the effects of the alcohol, rambling on as she was.
   “You know it does,” Temari said laughing. “Sometimes you need to think about something other than the best way to dismember a person,” she joked. Hikari was finding that she really didn’t mind Temari, she had attitude, but in a good way. Hikari scanned the crowd, “Are you looking for someone?” Temari asked her.
   “Just wondering which one of the guys I could con into assisting me with a song, Neji isn’t big on this kind of thing, he would much rather sit back and listen.”
   “What about the Uchiha kid,” she suggested, “He put on quite the performance earlier.”
   Hikari giggled, “I’m pretty sure that was a once in a life event, I just wish I had thought to catch it on camera, for possible extortion.”
   “I think I remember seeing Shikamaru carrying one around earlier, perhaps he caught it.”
   “Really, well then I don’t doubt he did get, he doesn’t miss much that’s for sure.”
Temari nodded in agreement. She began to look over the crowd with her, analyzing the guys from what she knew about them, “What song are you wanting to do?”
“Bring me to life, so they don’t even really need to do much, just back me up.”
“You want someone with more of a gritty sound to their voice then, hmm.” She had an idea she just had to find the loud mouth now, finally she spotted him at the back of the room with the other male from his team. She cupped her hands around he mouth to make her voice carry further, “Inuzuka, come here we need your help.”
“What do you want?” He called back.
“Just come here ya idiot.” they watched him make his way through the crowd.
“What?!”
   “I need a partner for a song, you don’t even need to do much just a little background,” Hikari answered him. “So what do you think will you give me a hand?”
   Kiba thought about it for a long minute, “All depends on the song, I don’t do mushy.”
   “Bring me to life.”
   “Not bad,” he nodded approvingly. They waited a few minutes for a turn before getting ready for another song.

   When the song was over, Hikari sought Neji out again, he had stationed himself in the corner of the room where Ino and Naruto had set up some tables and chairs. He was conversing with Shikamaru. He spotted Hikari out of the corner of his eye he pulled her into his lap. "Done singing for the night?"
   "I think so, what are you guys up to over here?"
   "Debating how long our presence is required before we can sneak out," Shikamaru told her. "How long do you think?"
   "Sorry to break it to you Shikamaru, but I'm pretty sure you're stuck here til the end. With Ino responsible for all the planning she won't leave til the end, and she won't let you leave either. In fact I think we're all stuck for the long haul seeing as how it's technically for us too." She added for Neji's benefit.

   She giggled at him and looked at the time, “Well, it is already after midnight, so technically you could kick everyone out whenever you want to.”
   “Good,” he set his sights on Ino and headed her way, they talked for a moment before he she nodded and headed over to the karaoke machine.
   She grabbed the microphone so that everyone would hear her, “Okay everyone, I think it's time to call it a night,” there were a few groans of disappointment. “But first,” she paused for a moment, it was clear she was pretty hammered. “I think, Hikari should come up and do one more song.” She started up a chant of, one more song, that the drunken guests were more than happy to take up.
   “Just do it so we can call it a night,” Sasuke told her.
   “Sing for me Hikari,” Neji gave her leg another squeeze.
   She sighed and gave in, everyone went silent as she stood up, “Fine, but I need to grab something first.” She said loudly and left the room only to come back a minute later with her guitar, “If I'm going to do this I'm going to do it right, fuck the karaoke machine.” She stood in front of the microphone stand and began playing the first few bars of the song.

   They said their good byes as everyone left for the night. Sasuke roped Naruto into staying to help clean up the mess, and he suggested Hikari and Neji call it a night.
"Why do I need to stay behind and help," he whined.
"Because this party was your idea dobe." Naruto pouted, "you want to stay the night?" He asked offhandedly. Naruto's mood brightened instantly, more than happy to help out.
Hikari had wanted to help with the clean up as well but Neji has insisted it was time to head up stairs. He picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder before ascending.
"Put me down," she admonished lightly.
"As you wish," he said and tossed her onto the bed before joining her and drawing her into a tight embrace.
"How's your back feel?" She asked, referring to his still healing lacerations.
"They are fine, don't worry." She withdrew from his arms, only to straddle his hips.
She leaned down to kiss him, her hair fell down in a curtain around them. "You're sure?" She ground into him, biting back a moan.
