When the sun rose on the new day it was Gaara who woke first this time. The sun was already high in the sky and Gaara wondered if the Hokage had noticed he was gone yet. Looking down at his lovers slumbering form, it was hard for him to feel guilty though.
Neither of the two knew how many hours they’d spent making love – they weren’t exactly counting – but Gaara could distinctly remember Hinata’s passionate gasps as he’d made her come several times. It was definitely an experience he planned on repeating.
In fact…
***
“…nata.”
Hinata drowsily came out of her sleep to the sound of someone calling her name. As her eyes focused on the intensely red hair and tender expression that was inches away from her face, her memory of the night before flooded back. Her face went bright red. She noted that they were both still in bed together and still very naked.
She didn’t know why, but she hadn’t expected him to still be there when she woke up. Before she could say anything, he kissed her deeply.
The sweeping passion that followed took them through to noon, each of them savouring every moment, neither of them wanting their time together to end. But as their passions waned, reality crept in, a silent and inevitable force.
They hadn’t been resting for long after their throes before Gaara said, “I have to go.”
Hinata could only nod, not daring to use her voice at that time. She’d already promised herself she’d take what she could get. She bit back the question on the tip of her tongue, when will I see you again? and shifted so he could get out and get dressed.
She watched his form move around the room gathering his things, noting for the first time a very distinctive mole on his upper left buttock. Blushing profusely, she averted her eyes. Instead of feeling embarrassed she was ashamed to realise it was seriously turning her on. If she stared any longer she would have jumped him.
After strapping his gourd back on his back, Gaara turned to Hinata who was still in bed.
“Hinata,” he began, but then realised he didn’t know what to say next.
“Until next time,” she finished for him a smile on her face.
He nodded stiffly and left.
Hinata lay frozen on the bed until she was sure he was gone before letting the tears fall.

As it turned out, Tsunade hadn’t missed Gaara in the slightest. When he found her, she was still drunk, still drinking and still hugging his puppet doppelganger merrily.
Gaara swapped places with the puppet again and took his rightful place next to the Hokage, even if his mind was elsewhere.
She’d said ‘until next time’. Could he take that to say she wanted to see him again? Gaara hated feeling so uncertain. He hadn’t felt this way since before his fight with Naruto years ago. He didn’t like it. He wished he hadn’t hesitated before. He should have asked her to come back to Suna with him.
Next time, he told himself. Next time he’d tell her he loved her and take her back to Suna with him and never let her go again.
Unfortunately, for the rest of his trip he had no opportunity to get away again. Before he knew it the closing ceremony to the Chuunin exams ended and he was at the entrance to Konoha being sent off along with his siblings by Tsunade, all of the newly formed team seven and even the lazy Nara.
Gaara bowed respectfully to them while scanning the horizon for Hinata, ready to take her with him. Never in his thoughts did he factor in the possibility that she wouldn’t see him off. He waited desperately, surely she would be along any second now.
“Come on Gaara,” Temari called, pulling him out of his stupor.
He turned to find his brother and sister already leaving ahead of him. With no reason to linger, he took one last look around but she never showed. Maybe she didn’t know he was leaving? he reasoned with himself. His whole stay was kept under the radar after all.
“I’ll be back,” he vowed to himself under his breath. He didn’t care what it took, he would find a way to come back and get her. It was that one thought that gave him the strength to leave.

At the time the Suna siblings were leaving, Hinata was indeed caught up. The Hyuuga compound was under complete lockdown. An order issued by her father after he’d heard from Kiba about Gaara’s unscheduled visit.
Hinata had not been out of her own home since that night. She did try to convince her father that it was unnecessary. She had no intention of chasing after Gaara. She would wait for him to come see her, if he was so inclined. Of course her father hadn’t listened. She didn’t care of course. When the time came, she’d just sneak out and see the red head off at least but it was days after his departure that she was even told of his leaving; another order of her father’s.
“Father!” she cried, seeking him out after being told the news. “Is it true? The Kazekage has gone home?”
“You didn’t need to see him off,” was Hiashi’s reply. The expression on his face was childishly stubborn.
Hinata couldn’t believe what she was hearing or seeing. Was this man really the fearsome leader of the Hyuuga clan?
“I was the Konoha emissary. It was incredibly rude not to send off the Suna envoy.”
“That was all in the past. You have duties here as the Hyuuga heiress.”
Not so long ago the man had been willing to let Neji take over as heir, and now he was saying this.
Hinata’s insides turned stone cold.
“Then let me be clear,” she said, her scathing tone sounding foreign even to her own ears. “I will not be taking over from you. Consider this my withdrawal from that candidacy.”
***
Weeks later Hinata was still refusing to retract her withdrawal. Her father had begged and pleaded to no avail. Even the elders threatened to take drastic action. Not only was Hinata not galled, she’d already officially submitted the paperwork to them with Tsunade as witness.
What was surprising was Neji’s reaction.
“If this is the path you wish to follow, Hinata sama, then I will stand by you,” he said to her.
Their relationship had been the best it has been since they were children but to have Neji’s unwavering support was truly an amazing thing. What was just as shocking was how many others stood by her too. Once word got out about her decision, Kiba and Shino of course made their loyalties known and Neji had Rock Lee and Ten Ten stand with them. Naruto, not surprisingly, gave her one of his staunch thumbs up guarantees with Sakura close behind him and a confused Sai mimicking them. Even Shikamaru, Akimichi Chouji and a prattling Yamanaka Ino promised her they would put in their two cents in if things got a bit messy.
Hinata was so humbled by their support. Did she really have this many friends? Of course she hadn’t told anyone about her other decision yet. Only Tsunade knew she’d put her name down to do the Jounin exams. She didn’t plan to tell them either. Her friends would probably support her but if her father found out things really would get messy. He’d try to stop her of course and she couldn’t have that.
Instead she went about her business, continuing her practice with more vigour than ever. She had to prepare for the exam.
As far as her father was concerned his daughter was finally falling back on track.
Four days before the exam was to begin, Hinata simply packed her things, not just what she needed for the exam but everything she wanted to take with her. She would not be coming back home.
She’d written a note to her father, hoping he wouldn’t find it for a while.
After taking one last look at her room, she picked up her overladen knapsack and met Nara Shikamaru at the Konoha gates.
“Hey, Shikamaru kun,” she said touching down next to him. “I’m glad you’re coming too!”
Shikamaru gave her one of his infamous sighs. “It’s troublesome but seems the Godaime nominated me to be an examiner for the Jounin exams this year too. I didn’t want to argue. That woman nags as bad as my Mum when she wants to.”
Hinata just giggled. “Don’t be like that. At least you’ll get to spend some more time with a certain kunoichi.”
Shikamaru gave her a strange look. “You –”
“Not a lot escape my eyes, Shikamaru kun,” Hinata interrupted him and left ahead of him.
The Nara just shook his head.
“Women,” he muttered and took after her.

It wasn’t for two whole weeks before Hyuuga Hiashi found out about his daughter’s true intentions. He’d heard of her entrance into the Jounin exams of course. Not from Hinata, who had left for exam without even so much as a goodbye to him.
Instead he heard it by accident from Tsunade when he went to hand in the documents of Hinata’s withdrawal to her.
They’d finally been signed and notarised by the elders and himself, making it official.
“So you relinquished after all,” the Godaime said, with a raised eyebrow. She stamped the original and the copy with her seal and handed back the copy for the Hyuuga records.
The Hyuuga leader sighed, he should have known having teenage daughters was going to be hard to deal with.
“I tried already and now I’m out of time.”
Submitted documents such as these could be withdrawn by the submitter within a month of them being handed in otherwise they were processed and become official. Hiashi was overdue in getting them in – not that anyone could blame him.
In the end he thought it would be a good present to his daughter when she got back from the Jounin exams. Even if she failed the exams at least he could tell her that he listened to her wishes. He’d spent so many years ignoring them that this was the least he could do.
“As long as she’s happy and healthy, I as a father can’t ask for much more,” he said ruefully. “Both Neji and Hanabi are great candidates for the role so I can afford to let her have her way.”
Tsunade chuckled, suddenly glad she didn’t have any children.
“Well that explains why you let her go for the Jounin exam.”
Hiashi gave the Hokage a strange look.
“Since the Jounin exam is held in Sunagakure this year I was sure you would have refused to let her go, what with all that’s happened to her there. A little birdy also told me that perhaps she and the Kazekage have formed their own connection if you know what I mean.”
She grinned at him, blithely unaware of Hiashi’s ignorance of the whole affair.
“Who knows, maybe between the two of them we can strengthen our villages’ bond. After all, now that she’s no longer the heiress, a marriage like this one could be beneficial for both parties involved.”
Hiashi felt his world crumbling around him.
“Excuse me,” he said, bowing more stiffly than usual. He was in such a rush to exit the room he almost ran over a messenger coming in.
“Sorry to intrude,” the messenger said, narrowly avoiding being bowled over.
Hiashi didn’t even fault in his stride, flying down the corridor without a backwards glance.
Tsunade frowned, then focused on the person in front of her. “Just ignore him, Shoutarou. What have you got for me?”
“Message from Suna.”
“Ah,” Tsunade brightened. “I’m guessing this is to do with the results of the Jounin exam.”
She flipped open the scroll and began to read, her face becoming whiter with every word.
“Oh Shit.”
***
After walking out of the Hokage’s office, Hiashi went straight home and into his eldest daughter’s room.
The first thing that showed something was off was the fact that the door was unlocked. Hinata always locked her door. Outside her room she had so little privacy that she coveted it in her own space.
At first glance nothing seemed amiss. The room was neat as usual and her bed was made, but if one looked closely they could see several photos were missing along with some personal items and not a single article of clothing could be found in the whole room.
On the bed was an envelope with ‘Dear Father’ written on it.
