Pain agreed to Itachi’s plan to take Kisame, Sasori, and Deidara and the four of them track Orochimaru. They found his hideout in the forest. They felt some terrible chakra coming from deep within the hideout. That did not deter them. The four of them entered the snake’s lair. They encountered The Sound Four and mercilessly dealt with them.
As Tayuya died, she cried out for Sasuke. These were Orochimaru’s bodyguards and Sasuke was their leader, but he was nowhere to be found. The Akatsuki moved deeper into the hideout.
Kabuto was coming down the same corridor as Akatsuki, but hadn’t seen them yet in the half lighted hall, but he was surely aware that they were in the hideout. Itachi could see him though. Kabuto stopped right beside the doorway that terrible chakra was coming from. Kabuto drew a weapon, but he didn’t move forward.
The four were now close enough that Kabuto no doubt knew they were there, but he didn’t spare them a glance.
Then someone walked out the open doorway. Sasuke.
“Which one are you?” Kabuto asked.
Itachi went cold. Had Orochimaru possessed his brother’s body?
“Which one do you think?” Sasuke answered. He looked the medical-nin right in the eyes. Kabuto collapsed and Sasuke turned to face his brother.
“Aniki,” Sasuke said evenly.
“Sasuke?”
Sasuke smirked. His Sharingan activated again and all four Akatsuki saw the same thing: a weird undulating organic plain and three people enveloped in fleshy cocoons and Orochimaru’s disgusting form reaching out for Sasuke. But as Orochimaru consumed him, Sasuke’s will took over and the flames coming from his curse seal burned and blackened everything. Sasuke created three hideous beasts as Orochimaru argued that this could not be possible.
“Orochimaru, before my eyes, all of your jutsu are . . . Well, you get it now, don’t you?”
Sasuke was reversing the rebirth ritual and consuming Orochimaru.
The vision ended and left the four of them shaken.
Sasuke rested a hand on the hilt of his sword. “Well, aniki, to what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?”
“Sasuke,” was all Itachi could force out.
Sasuke’s Sharingan eyes darted between the three men with his brother. He could see Sasori for what he truly was, the blond was an unknown, and Kisame he recognized.
Deidara recovered. “Teme! I was the one who was supposed to kill Orochimaru!”
“Looks like you failed,” Sasuke said evenly. And added a tiny smirk.
Deidara stared at those red eyes and felt the same distain coming from them as he felt coming from Itachi’s.
“Apologies, Itachi, but I’m killing this little brat!” Deidara ran forward.
Itachi was too slow to stop him and then the pair was lost in the smoke and dust of an explosion. A few more and the corridor collapsed in front of them. Panicked, and not trying to hide it, Itachi ran the way they came, Kisame and Sasori following. All the while, explosions rumbled the hideout from above. At least the cave in hadn’t killed either of them.
As they ran, more corridors collapsed around them, cutting them off and even trapping them. Kisame cleared the way for them and finally they made it to the entrance.
Finding the pair wasn’t difficult: just follow the smoke and dust. And the giant Deidara . . . thing. Itachi had his Sharingan activated so he could see the nano-figures in the air. He stopped the others and made an earthen shelter and waited. He could breathe when the sounds of battle resumed. They broke from the shelter and hurried to the battlefield.
Deidara and Sasuke were on their knees, exhausted. Deidara looked up at Itachi.
“Good. I can take you both out. No hard feelings, Kisame, Sasori. Hn.”
Deidara’s flesh was becoming translucent. And then everything went black as something enveloped them. The explosion was intense, but was buffered by their shelter. Itachi became aware of heat and wet. No one said anything. Then there was light. Itachi approached it.
“Stop!” It was Sasuke’s muffled voice. “The air here is poisonous.”
“You . . . trash used me!” The voice rumbled around Itachi and the others and Itachi realized they were inside an animal. A ninja summon. “Those eyes . . . you used those eyes . . . to control me . . . use . . . me . . .”
“It’s a good thing I have breathers,” Kisame said. He pulled out a pair and handed one to Itachi. The two of them doned them, knowing Sasori didn’t need it.
Itachi stepped out into the miasma filled forest. Kisame and Sasori stepped out behind him and in front of him stood his little brother. He was battered and exhausted, but whole and alive. Curiosity overwhelmed seeing his brother alive and Itachi turned around. They’d been in the body of a giant snake. Manda. He was dead. Itachi turned back and Sasuke was gone.
“Sasuke!”
The wind didn’t even answer him.
“What is wrong with that brother of yours?” Kisame asked.
“I don’t know.”
He turned to look at Kisame and Sasori and noticed Sasori was also gone. He searched with his Sharingan and didn’t see him or Sasuke.
“Where’s Sasori?”
Kisame looked around, not realizing he was gone until now. “I don’t who’s the more foolish, that brat of yours or Sasori.”
“Both are pretty dumb,” Itachi conceded. “Orichimaru’s dead. So is Deidara. We should report in.”
“Yeah. Let’s get out of this forest.”
-----
It took hours to find wholesome air again. Both Akatsuki members were suffering from poisoning by the time they emerged. They didn’t know where they were. Kisame was stronger and larger, but Itachi’s smaller, frailer body trembled. He broke out in a sweat and curled up on the ground in pain.
A hawk screamed above. Kisame armed himself, but didn’t outright attack the bird as it slowly descended down to them. It was a large hawk with a package tied to its leg. Kisame took it and found two vials of antidote.
Kisame huffed. “That brat of yours at least doesn’t want us dead yet.”
He found a syringe in his medical pack and used it to inject the antidote in Itachi’s trembling arm and then his own.
The hawk flew away. Itachi curled up tighter and shook. Kisame picked him up and took him further away from the forest and its poisonous air.
Itachi struggled in his arms. Kisame put him down on the ground and Itachi vomited. His body still shook. When he finished retching, Kisame pulled him close to sooth him.
“Sleep, Itachi. Let the antidote work.”
Eventually, Itachi grew limp and slept.
-----
Still sick, Itachi woke up, but his body wasn’t burning anymore. It was still day or day again; he didn’t know. He wanted to throw up again, but his stomach was empty. He groaned. He was on his stomach so that he wouldn’t choke on his own vomit.
He pushed himself up and onto his back.
“Awake?”
“Kisame?”
“I was afraid you’d never wake up.”
That wasn’t Kisame’s voice.
“Sasuke?”
He heard someone moving, but he couldn’t open his eyes to the bright sunlight.
“Sasori’s dead. Someone who uses poisons should be more immune to them. I didn’t mean to take you there, but it was the only way I could save you. You should recover completely in a week or so.”
“Sasuke.”
“There’s a village, south-southwest of here. Take off your headbands and cloaks and go there. They have experience treating poison. Don’t mention you’re shinobi or any village or organization. Tell them you wandered into the forest. They’ll treat you.”
“Where’s the she-wolf?” Kisame asked him.
There was smirk in Sasuke’s voice. “You mean his lover? I don’t know.”
“Sasuke,” Itachi said again, but Sasuke ignored him and left.
-----
Itachi woke up to being carried in Kisame’s arms to the village Sasuke mentioned. The doctors took him in and pumped him full of fluids and drugs. He could hear them treating Kisame as well. Kisame said what Sasuke told him to and didn’t mention they were shinobi.
A day or two of treatment and Itachi could sit up and eat. He was weakened, but recovering.
“I contacted Pain,” Kisame said from the next bed. He was sitting up and against the wall. “I told him that Sasuke killed Orochimaru, Deidara got pissed and attacked him, then Sasuke killed him. We were poisoned by Sasuke, but Sasori chased him and died in battle. I said Sasuke was wounded and so fled rather than fight us. I told him we’ll be here another few days and you’ll need about two weeks more to recover.”
“Where are we?”
“Land of Tea.”
It came together for Itachi. To save them and himself, Sasuke summoned Manda to swallow them and sent him home. Manda still took a hit from the blast even as they teleported away. The reason the forest was filled with poison was because they were near Ryuchi Cave, the home of the White Snake Sage. Sasuke, being Orochimaru’s apprentice and probably training to become a Snake Sage, was immune to poison and venom.
“Where’s Sasuke?”
“Don’t know. There’s something up with him.”
“I know. Something’s changed.”
“Keep resting. The poison’s still in your system. You need a little more time.”
-----
Itachi woke up in the middle of the night. It was dark save for moonlight coming in the windows. He and Kisame were the only ones sleeping here. But Itachi felt a presence and sat up to see Sasuke sitting two beds away, looking at the opposite wall.
“Sasuke?”
His brother didn’t look at him. “You should recover completely. Whatever your plans, Kakashi’s plan’s, Jiraiya’s plans, Naruto’s . . . go on without me.”
“What are you saying?”
“I need some time to myself. I’m not coming back yet.”
“Sasuke, what’s happened to you? What did Orochimaru do to you?”
“Nothing. I just had time to think. I’ll come back eventually.”
“Sasuke—” He was suddenly gone and Itachi realized it had been a genjutsu.
Itachi laid back down. He had no choice but to continue forward and hope Sasuke would return quickly. No doubt Sasuke would become a Snake Sage and therefore be in that poisoned forest where no one could follow.
He needed Kakashi. He needed his lover to comfort him and assure him Sasuke would come back.
