So this is the next chapter. I re-wrote it three times to get where I thought it would be satisfactory to post. I respond to reviews here: http://xiophelia.livejournal.com
`~` Naruto stared at the prison, his uncle was in there and this would be the first time in years that he would see him. Itachi had amazing connections and was able to get the blond in to see Kyuubi without guards. Of course they would be watching from behind the one way window. Naruto squared his shoulders and nodded to the prison guard that he was ready to proceed. Itachi would have been with him but an emergency had come up with a contract and he had sent Sasuke with him. Naruto had protested that he could do this alone, but Itachi had been firm on his decision. The last three weeks had taken a toll on the Uzumaki. The media had been unforgiving on him. They wanted to know his connection to Madara Uchiha, one of the most famous yakuza. But Itachi had silenced them with a lot of money and blackmail. And Naruto was having a very hard time trying to find a decent gift to give his boss. He didn’t want to give his boss a gift basket, it seemed too impersonal. Naruto was happy that they had never found his apartment. He didn’t want to think about the kind of damage it would have done to Konohamaru. The nightmares that the kid suffered from were stressful enough. Naruto found himself waking up several times during the night just to calm the kid down enough to go back to sleep. And even though Naruto’s sleep suffered, he was glad to have helped Konohamaru. Naruto offered the guards at the security check a nervous smile. He had never done a thing like this before and was unsure as to what to do. But the guards had been nice and showed the blond exactly what had to be done. He had to leave his keys and wallet with them. The keys could have been used as a weapon and well it was just a precaution with his wallet. When he was through to the other side he laughed at how uncomfortable Sasuke was. The expression on his best friends face was priceless. And the blond wished he had had a camera for this occasion. But he did have a phone. Naruto smirked as he pulled out his company cell phone and snapped a picture. He was sure that Kiba would enjoy the look of embarrassment on Sasuke’s face. “I know what you’re thinking moron, not a word to Kiba.” Sasuke ground out. Naruto’s grin only widened in response, he was lucky that the guards hadn’t taken his cell phone at that point. Itachi had left clear instructions that Naruto was to keep his phone at all times. He wanted to be stay in contact with Naruto as much as possible considering the distance between them. “Oh I don’t know. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I wonder just what Kiba would say if he saw this?” Sasuke’s face darkened at the threat. “Itachi won’t have an assistant if you send that to Kiba.” “Well I guess we’ll have to negotiate then huh?” “Later moron.” Naruto nodded his head. The little bit of fun he just had seemed to relieve some of his anxiety. When Sasuke had made his way over to him, the two linked arms and followed the guard to the visitation room that they would be using. For once, Naruto was glad of the influence that Itachi had. He could feel a knot work its way into his stomach as they approached the door. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly and then turned to Sasuke. “This is something that I have to do alone. I’ll be fine.” Sasuke gave Naruto a quick hug. The blond smiled at him before he went into the room. Naruto’s eyes quickly found his uncle. The older man looked healthy enough, but there was sadness about him that Naruto caught quickly. It seemed that the man had some sort of regret. But Naruto wouldn’t know what it was until he talked with his uncle. “Umm...hey.” Naruto’s uncertainty broke the silence. Kyuubi’s head snapped up at the strange voice that had broken the silence. He stared with wide blue eyes at the blond man that was in the room. He sobbed as he stood and approached the young. There was a question in his eyes and Naruto only nodded in answer. The man cried and took his nephew into his arms, hugging him tightly. Kyuubi’s wild, long red hair flowed around them. Naruto shakily brought his own arms up to wrap around the man. And he broke down. He couldn’t help it. He still loved this man like he was his father. And nothing could ever tarnish that. Kyuubi was the first who pulled away, but he moved his hands to rest on the blonds shoulders. He studied the young man before him and smiled sadly. “You look just like Minato. If you grew your hair out longer, you’d be the exact copy of your father.” Naruto smiled wearily. “I’m guessing the lawyers explained everything?” “Yes. I would have much rather to have heard everything from you. But I will take what I can get.” Kyuubi said sadly. “I’m sorry.” Kyuubi shook his head harshly. “Don’t ever be sorry Naruto! Not to me! I tried to protect you in the worst possible way. If I had just gotten help from Iruka and Kakashi then none of this would have happened. I wasn’t in my right mind at the time.” “I forgive you. I see now that you were trying to protect me. I’m sorry that I haven’t visited you before now. I wanted to, but well I wasn’t treated that well after everything went down.” Kyuubi’s expression saddened. “I know. I would give anything to take back what I did, if only to spare you the pain that I placed upon you.” “Those women were really assassins?” Naruto asked as he pulled away from his uncle and sat down in the provided chair. “Yes. They were sent by Madara to kill me so that he could take you into his custody. He would have raised you and then had you turn Minato’s company over to him and then had you killed.” The truth as they say hurt. “But why did you bring them into the house?” Kyuubi snorted. “They were placed there. Madara was getting desperate so he had someone plant their bodies in the basement. I would never dismember a body. It’s too disgusting and I don’t have the stomach for something like that. He wanted to be able to adopt you from the orphanage.” “How do you know all this?” “He made sure to visit me and brag all about it. Some of the guards here were on his payroll, so it wasn’t hard for him to drop by for a visit. The good thing is that he recorded all his conversations with me. Apparently he liked to go back over them and savor his victory.” “Ah. I guess it would be moot for me to ask how you are.” “I’m doing well now that Itachi has gotten rid of the corrupted guards. The lawyers seem hopeful that they can get me out on good behavior. I did kill those women Naruto, never forget that. Blood does stain my hands.” “I know. It’s…just…you have a place to live if you get out. I know it may be crowded in my apartment, but you can live there.” Kyuubi shook his head. “It wouldn’t do you any good. I know you have custody of your godson and to have a convicted killer in your household wouldn’t look good. Kakashi and Iruka have been by and have offered a room at their house to me. I’ve accepted it.” Naruto smiled. “I can still visit you uncle.” Kyuubi smiled widely. “Uncle, I like the sound of that. And hopefully I shall become an uncle to your charge.” “Yes. I think you two will get along famously. It’s been a great time uncle, but I have to go. I do have a godson to pick up.” “Where does the time go? I look forward to meeting you again under better circumstances. You must mean a lot to Itachi if he is arranging my freedom.” Naruto blushed. “It’s not like that! He’s trying to make up for what his uncle did.” Kyuubi laughed boisterously. “I see it differently dear Naruto. But maybe it is as you say it is.” Naruto glared at the knowing smile on his uncles’ face. “Pffft, I think prison is rotting your brain!” “As if! I’ve gotten a college degree while I’ve been here. So there Mr. Smartypants!” Kyuubi stuck his tongue out childishly. Naruto couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up within him. He had missed this kind of interaction with his uncle. And unfortunately he couldn’t get those years back, no matter how hard he wished for them. But he would make the best of their future together. And he was sure that Kyuubi would be a great uncle to Konohamaru. And he couldn’t wait for them to meet. “I’m sure you’ll be out soon enough. God help society though.” Naruto said as he embraced his uncle. “Yes, I’m sure my freedom would be a burden upon them. But in all seriousness, I’m glad you came today Naruto.” “Yeah me too, stay safe and I’ll see you as a free man soon.” “We’ll see. I love you Naruto.” “I love you too.” The blond began to cry as he left his uncle in that room. He was sad that he couldn’t bring his uncle out with him, but until they had the trial, there was nothing that could be done. Sasuke met him at the door and offered Naruto a hug. “I’m good Sasuke. I’m happy.” Sasuke didn’t say anything but he told the guards that they were done here and they were led back to the entrance where they received their belongings back. They left the prison in good spirits. Naruto was relieved that his uncle was still the same man he used to be despite all the hardships. And he thanked every deity for that. The ride back to the city was quiet. Sasuke seemed to be at a loss for words. And Naruto couldn’t blame him. It took some people awhile to get used to Kyuubi’s presence. While he may have seemed like a reasonable person and loved to joke, there was a dangerous aura that rested just under the surface. If you liked Kyuubi you learned to ignore that aura. But if you didn’t, well, you just stayed away from him. The blond was happy that their interaction was almost like old times. It warmed his heart that his uncle was still the same man. He hoped that the lawyers would be able to get him out of the prison soon. He also wanted to get Itachi a present for what he was doing. The blond had protested that he could pay for the lawyers, but the Uchiha had insisted that since it was his family that caused Naruto harm he should take care of it. “Hey Sasuke, what kind of gift should I get for Itachi?” Naruto asked innocently. Sasuke had to bite his tongue. He knew exactly what kind of present his brother wanted unconsciously. He really didn’t want to give anything away to Naruto. But he was pretty sure his brother didn’t know about his own attraction. He would leave it alone for now. The blond deserved to be happy and with that, no interference from him. Kiba had wanted to push the two into a room together and lock the door. But Sasuke put his foot down. He wouldn’t do that to his brother and his best friend. “Itachi has always enjoyed the opera. Maybe you could get tickets and take him to see one.” Sasuke suggested. “What one is his favorite?” Naruto wanted to know badly. This was something better than a gift basket. It was more personal and he felt it was just right. “His favorite is ‘A Summer Night’s Dream.’ I have connections that can you get tickets. They sell fast.” “Thank you Sasuke.” `~` Naruto smiled at Konohamaru as he flung himself into Naruto’s waist. He chuckled as the kid started to tell him how much he had missed him. This was normal ever since the kidnapping incident. The kid was afraid that he was going to be taken away from Naruto for good and had been on his best behavior. Of course Naruto had told him that he wasn’t going to be taken away. But the fear was deeply rooted in Konohamaru. “I missed you too kid. Why don’t you go outside and wait with Sasuke real quick? I have to talk to Sakura.” Naruto suggested as he pulled the kid away from him. Konohamaru did as was suggested and left. Naruto smiled sadly after him. He turned to Sakura and saw the burning question in her eyes. “He’s still the same Sakura. It’s amazing!” “I’m glad Naruto. Konohamaru still hasn’t been himself though. I don’t know what to tell you.” “We’ll figure it out sooner or later. Is he still hanging out with Moegi and Udon?” “Yes he is. He still interacts with them even though he’s reserved. I think the best thing we can do is not push him and let him come out on his own.” “Thanks Sakura. I appreciate you taking care of him like this.” “Nonsense Naruto! We’re practically family and I love having him here.” “We’ll talk more tomorrow. Gaara is staying for a bit and I don’t want him to be lonely. Plus Temari and Hinata are coming over in about an hour.” “I’ll see you later Naruto. Maybe the three of us should have lunch sometime?” Naruto smiled. “Yeah it’s been awhile since Team Seven had been together. I’ll call you tomorrow to set up some details.” The two friends said their goodbyes and Naruto went to meet up with Sasuke and Konohamaru. He couldn’t help the happiness that welled up within him. Things for once were starting to look up. His life wasn’t a mess anymore and he actually had a good job, something people told him he would never have. He smiled widely as Sasuke and Konohamaru turned to him and both smiled back. He could be happy with no significant other while he had these two in his life. Nothing could keep him down as long as they were there for him. “Come on guys, let’s go home. We have some guests coming over tonight.” Konohamaru slipped his hand into Naruto’s as they walked to the car. It seemed as though traffic wasn’t that heavy yet and it only took the three of them to get home in twenty minutes. Naruto was grateful for that because Temari and Hinata were due to be there in at least another half hour. It gave him time to at least make some snacks and tidy up the apartment. He quickly jumped into action when he opened the apartment door. Gaara, Sasuke and Konohamaru pitched in to help as well. It wasn’t long before his apartment was ready to receive guests and the snacks were made. “Thanks guys, the girls will most certainly appreciate this. At least I won’t have to hear Temari complain.” “Naruto, Temari will find something to complain about.” Sasuke said as he flopped on the couch. “Hey where’s dog breath?” Naruto asked, pretty surprised that Kiba wasn’t there. “He had to work tonight. There was an emergency at the vet clinic.” “Oh that sucks. I know how much he hates being around his sister.” Naruto snickered. “You’re enjoying it too much.” Sasuke glared. Naruto pulled his cell phone from his pocket. “But I bet I have something that would cheer him up.” “Don’t you dare,” was the growled response. “Oh I won’t, if you’ll be nice to me.” Naruto’s tone was playful. “Fine mo-I mean Naruto.” “Nice save,” Naruto snickered. A knock at the door interrupted their banter and Naruto practically ran to the door, sliding on the vinyl floor in his socks. He grinned as he pulled the door open and pulled both girls into a hug. “Girls! It’s been way too long. Come into my humble abode!” “Naruto stop being such a flirt and watch where you put your hands on my woman!” Temari’s voice was full with fake anger. “But Hinata is one fine woman! She should broaden her horizons!” Naruto grinned as he led the ladies into the living room. “Tch, whatever you fake blond.” “I’ll have you know that I’m one hundred percent true blond! Ask Neji, right Hinata?” Hinata’s face turned to a deep red, which was very visible on her pale skin. Naruto couldn’t help but laugh at the angry yet confused expression on Temari’s face. The blond woman was sure to throw a fit. And Naruto knew how to defuse the bomb. Naruto led the women to sit on the couch, shooing Sasuke and Gaara off the couch quickly. He sat down between the two women and stretched his arms over their backs. “So ladies, how are you?” Temari rolled her eyes. “We’re fine. Why don’t you introduce to your friend?” “Sure thing! Gaara get your butt over here! You have to meet my girls!” The redhead didn’t say anything as he approached the women. He stared blankly at them and then quickly introduced himself. “I’m Gaara.” Naruto looked to Temari, waiting for her to say something about Gaara. She always had a habit of making fun of one of Naruto’s friends when she met them. But when he saw her face it was one of surprise and recognition. “Temari, what’s wrong?” The blond was concerned as the woman began to shake. Temari didn’t say anything as she pushed off the couch and hugged Gaara, pulling the redhead to her. The blonde’s body began to shake as she cried. But no one could make out what she was saying. It confused Naruto to no end. She had no reason to hug Gaara like that. He was sure of it. Temari pulled back and wiped the tears from her eyes, smiling. “Naruto remember when I told you that my father gave my youngest brother away? That he had red hair and the most beautiful green eyes? Well this is him.” Naruto’s jaw dropped. He had forgotten that. “Are you sure?” “Yeah. I’m positive. I know he was only two when that bastard gave him away, but he still mostly looks the same.” Naruto looked to Gaara. “Well, what do you think?” “It may be possible. But I want a blood test.” Gaara said. Naruto knew that the redhead wasn’t going to his hopes up in case this didn’t work out. There had many people throughout the years who had claimed to be his family, only to try and take what wealth Gaara had made for himself. It was a pain that Naruto didn’t want him to experience again. “You want me to arrange it with Tsunade?” Naruto asked Gaara. “Yes please,” was the quiet answer. “Sure thing buddy, I’ll get on that tomorrow. Now let’s enjoy the night. I finally got to see my uncle and I have to say…I think for once in my life, things are gonna be alright.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
