They met up with the rest of the team at the bottom of the steps to Hokage tower. After a bit more good-natured ribbing at Yamato about scaring the team, they headed up to meet with Tsunade. Even Sai dropped his fake smile briefly. "I'm glad you're okay."
Yamato stared at the younger man a moment, surprised. "Thanks."
Then he said, "who else is going to make Naruto behave?"
Yamato snickered when the blond turned to punch Sai. Sakura got between them and threatened to punch both of them.
As they started up the stairs they met Iruka on his way down. He glanced at them and Kakashi thought the teacher didn't look all that happy.
"Iruka-sensei! Hi!" Naruto greeted him.
He forced a smile. "Hello, Naruto. How are you?"
"Eh, we're good. We're on our way out on a mission." Naruto said. "How are you?"
"I'm fine, Naruto." He glanced at Kakashi and Yamato. "I can't talk, though, I've… got to get back to class. Take care and be safe, okay? I'll buy the ramen when you get back." He laughed when Naruto cheered.
"We will. See ya, Iruka-sensei!" Naruto called and took off up the stairs.
"Bye, Iruka-sensei!" Sakura waved and she and Sai headed up next.
The three men stood awkwardly for a minute. Yamato and Iruka were trying very hard not to look at each other. "Hey, go make sure Naruto doesn't barge in on Tsunade," Kakashi said. After a raised eyebrow, Yamato nodded. Glancing once more at Iruka, he waved and headed up the steps.
"You okay?" Kakashi asked, when Yamato disappeared around the curve.
"Sure. Of course I am, why?" Iruka asked, raising an eyebrow.
Kakashi shrugged and glanced away. "We'll be gone for a while, but... You should come over for cards or something when we get back."
Iruka blinked at him. "Um, okay. Yeah. Be…" he cleared his throat. "Be careful."
Kakashi looked back at him and remembered the night Yamato was gone. "Don't spend too much time at the bar."
Iruka gave him a half smile. "I still have to be able to teach."
Kakashi chuckled. "Right. Well, take care. You'll see us soon."
Iruka nodded. "Yeah. Um…" he paused and caught the copy nin's eye. "I better."
"You will." Kakashi looked at him another moment and headed up the steps.
"You'll be heading to Suna first. Meet with the Kazekage and see what other information he's gathered. Temari went back yesterday. We're not using normal communications lines right now, for obvious reasons. If you find the nin, be extremely careful. He's not our only concern right now; we need to know what else is going on. Something isn't adding up out there. The Tsuchikage is still claiming that the peace treaty is firmly in effect. He's trying to tell us he has no idea why his ninja would have attacked." She sighed. "You've got your work cut out for you. Good luck."
No one talked much as they made their way through the village to the west gates. As they passed through, both Kakashi and Yamato saw Iruka talking to the gate guards. He looked up at them as they passed through and waved. They waved back and exchanged glances, then took to the trees with the other three.
Kakashi was grateful for the fact that they were going to Suna first. Though he knew that Yamato was fine, had been cleared medically, he didn't mind having one more night in a decent bed before things got sticky. Once they left Suna and got near the border to Earth country, things would get a lot more uncomfortable.
They made it to Suna yet that evening and Gaara himself greeted them. As quiet as ever, he held his hand out to Naruto who, of course, was not. Gaara smiled, though, when the blond nearly shouted his hello. Kakashi had a feeling Gaara wouldn't have Naruto any other way.
When they were settled into his office, Temari with them and tea served, they got down to business. "So far," Gaara said, with a sigh, "we're inclined to believe that the Tsuchikage actually doesn't know what's going on. I, myself, have spoken directly to him and if he's lying, he's doing a very good job of it. Something else is happening in Iwa that isn't under the direct control of their kage."
"If it's internal to Iwa, we can't get involved in a dispute like that," Kakashi said.
"No, and we wouldn't want to. But there are attacks going on along the border villages in countries from Waterfall to Birds and spilling over into Wind and Earth." Temari sighed. "Suna, and by extension Wind, doesn't have the resources to combat something like that. Most of the villages have started to simply empty and they're moving further into the country. "
The copy nin frowned. "So whatever their underlying motives are, whoever they are, the end result is that they could easily start a war between us and Earth Country. If we attack, the Tsuchikage will have no choice to defend. And if the raids aren't stopped, the Hokage won't have a choice but to attack. Or risk looking weak to the other countries."
"As much as I do not want to get involved in another war, we can't afford to look weak, either. Our alliance with Konoha only goes so far," Gaara said.
Kakashi sighed. "Especially since we're not sure who we can trust within our own ranks."
"Tsunade hinted that something was wrong. She said she couldn't talk about it then but that you'd tell us when you got here." Temari glanced between them.
Yamato spoke up. "I was on a mission to Earth country about ten days ago. We'd heard rumors that one of the missing Mist nin - one of the current generation of the Seven Swordsman was seen there. I was still in ANBU and I took a squad up to go after him." He sighed. "We were ambushed. We'd been funneled into a narrow grove of trees along one of their cliffs about fifty kilometers inside their border and our explosives expert was taken out. They knew exactly what the group makeup was and which one she was. I… We lost three of our team from it."
Temari's eyes widened. "A leak in ANBU?"
Kakashi nodded. "That's what we think, anyway."
"I thought we were past all this bullshit." Naruto piped up.
"If only it were that easy, Naruto," Kakashi said, shaking his head
"As much as we were able to work together during the Fourth War, we're all still human. There are still plenty of people who only set their prejudices aside for the war, itself. Once it was over…" Yamato trailed off with a shrug.
"It can't be a coincidence that the missing nin surfaced during all of this," Sakura said, turning the discussion back to the issue at hand.
"I don't think so, either," Temari said. "So he's behind it, or at least involved. Possibly being paid to make the threats."
"That would be my guess." Kakashi glanced over at Gaara. "Any pattern to the attacks?"
Gaara leaned back in his chair. "In the beginning, there didn't seem to be. But they've been attacking and re-attacking the same villages, at least down here. So their forces, however many they have, are split. "
Kakashi nodded. "I spoke to the husband of a ninja who'd been sent out to protect the border village closest to Waterfall country. He said that the same thing happened up there. They went out after the initial attack to help clean up and recover and were hit again a couple of weeks later."
"It seems like they leave enough time for the villagers to think it's completely over. Unfortunately, the length of the break hasn't been consistent." Temari turned to Sakura. "Our medical forces are basically depleted right now. We've had so many injured come into the village that our hospitals are full."
"I can help some while we're still here." Sakura offered. "Though I don't know how much one person can do."
"Go ahead and see what you can do. We need to think through this a little more anyway. We'll stay here yet tomorrow," Kakashi said.
Sakura nodded and turned back to Temari, who stood. "I'll take you. We have a temporary second hospital set up close by. You can start there."
After the two women left, Kakashi spoke up again. "I think it would be a good idea to be in one of the villages the next time they're attacked. While Sakura is helping out here tomorrow, we'll go over the maps and see which one might be the best option."
Gaara nodded. "I agree. We have rooms set up for you. I hope you don't mind sharing two of you to a room. Temari has offered to share with Sakura. With the added population, we're low on space."
"That's fine. We always appreciate not having to camp," Kakashi said, his eye crinkling.
"Of course. Matsuri will show you to your rooms. Thank you again."
She pointed to two doors at the end of a hall. "Gaara-sama feels bad that you have to share. Unfortunately, these are the only two rooms left right now."
"That's quite alright. Anything beats the hard ground." Kakashi assured her.
"Please let me know if there's anything you need. He has also asked me to let you know that he would be honored if you joined him for breakfast in the dining room downstairs in the morning." Matsuri said and bowed.
"We'll be there. Thank you again." Kakashi turned to Yamato and they opened the door to one of the rooms. Across the hall, Naruto and Sai opened the other door. Yamato caught sight of the single large bed in the room. He blinked after the two a moment, surprised when neither of them said a word, simply went in.
"You don't think they're…" Yamato said with a raised eyebrow.
Kakashi stared after them as they went into the room and closed the door. "I have no idea. You know the night I went after you at the bar, they were in a booth together. Sai's hand was down Naruto's pants. I just figured it was because Naruto was drunk."
They stared at the closed door another moment. "Where does that leave Sakura?"
"I'm not sure I want to know," Kakashi said and turned into their room.
"Here, here and here. These three villages have been hit only once. They're likely to be the next targets for attack." Kankuro pointed on the map to the spots along the borders of Wind. "This one here was longest ago, about a week. We can be there inside a day, but we'll simply have to wait it out for when they might show up again."
"You said it's about two weeks or so for some of them?" Kakashi asked, absorbing the map. His headband was up and sharingan open.
"Give or take. I wouldn't suggest waiting to leave, though, beyond tomorrow." Temari said.
Kakashi shook his head. "No, I don't think so, either. What's the state of these villages? Is anyone left in them?"
Kankuro pointed to the first one. "This one that was hit a week ago still has a number of the men and a few women left in it. Not fully populated, but not empty, either."
"That's our target, then." He sighed. "We'll leave at first light. Can someone let Sakura know?"
"I will." Temari volunteered.
"Alright, then." Kakashi said.
Kakashi looked around from his spot on the roof of the building. It was obvious that Suna was more populated than normal. The streets were packed, people sitting on porches and balconies everywhere.
"So, what's the plan?" Yamato asked around his rice ball.
"We need to capture one of the nin attacking the villages. We don't have Ibiki, but I figure between you and I, we can get the information from him that we need." He frowned. "Dammit, I left ANBU over crap like that."
Yamato sighed. "I know. But we can't trust them right now."
They sat in silence for a while as they ate, both turning the information over in their heads. "So, what do you make of Iruka?" Kakashi asked.
"He was at the gates to see us off. There's no other way to take it." Yamato said.
"I agree. I think he likes us." Kakashi grinned, his eye curving with it. "When you went up with Naruto, I invited him to our place when we get back for cards or something."
Yamato didn't say anything at first. "Is this just for me?"
Kakashi shook his head. "No. You know we're both attracted to him. I'm pretty damned sure we both like him a lot."
"Yeah, no doubt about that. Does it bother you?"
Kakashi considered him a moment. "Do you love me less?"
Yamato shook his head. "No. I still can't stand the thought of being without you." When he realized what he said, he blushed, but was determined.
"Do you think that by liking him, I care about you less?" Kakashi asked, softly.
But again, Yamato shook his head. "Not really. I figure that we've had a lot of different kinds of friendships over the years. None as serious as what we have with each other, but they've been there. That didn't lessen the other friendships we had."
Kakashi stared out over the city for a moment. "So what do we do with it?"
"Why not just spend time with him? See if he really does like us back?" Yamato said.
"You mean date him?" Kakashi asked, looking over at his lover.
"Why not?" Yamato peered up at Kakashi.
The older man looked back over the rooftops. "Why not," he agreed. "Well, we'll just have to see him when we get back. See if he'll at least accept my invitation."
"Sounds like a good place to start." Yamato said and went back to his rice.
Kankuro left with them the next morning. It took them most of the day, as the village was in the northwestern-most corner of Wind country. But they made it right before sunset and were greeted by the village headman. "Kankuro-sama," he greeted, bowing.
"Nah, none of that," Kankuro said, waving. He turned to the rest of the group. "These are shinobi from the Village Hidden in the Leaves. They're here to help."
The headman bowed. "I'm afraid we don't have much in the way of lodgings right now," he apologized. "Our village is in bad shape."
Kakashi glanced at Yamato who suppressed the eye roll barely. "I can help with that."
The headman blinked at him, "I appreciate any aid that you can give."
"Show me where you would like things set up and I'll do what I can." Yamato said and the headman turned back toward the village.
They followed behind the two as the headman pointed to different parts of the village, explaining what he could to Yamato. After finding flat space, he built several smaller houses for the residents that were left and then made a larger one for the team. He couldn't help but smile at the look on the headman's face. "That's amazing!"
Yamato blushed. "Just did what I could. The rest of the area will need to be cleared before I could do any more."
"We can do that tomorrow. You need rest now." Kakashi said. He'd already started to see the drain on him.
"Of course, my apologies. We don't have much, but if there's anything you need, please feel free to ask." The headman bowed and ran off, undoubtedly to explain why the new houses appeared suddenly.
"I'm fine," Yamato said, turning to Kakashi.
"Yeah, but if I didn't say anything, you might be building all night. And frankly, what happens if they attack tonight?" Kakshi asked. He knew it was unlikely, but he was still ridiculously worried about his lover.
Yamato raised an eyebrow, but when Kakashi wouldn't look directly at him, he let it drop. "Right."
"We can help with their clean up and such tomorrow. Let's get some rest tonight." Kakashi said.
They ended up spending six days in the village, helping to clean up and repair things before anything happened. One of the village sentries spotted someone in a tree a ways off, so Kakashi and Yamato searched the area. They didn't see anyone, but they both knew that it was probably time to shift their focus.
They hit at night. Kakashi expected it and was almost disappointed at how predictable they were. Almost disappointed because there were way too many for the six shinobi to handle, even with Naruto's clones and Kankuro's puppets.
They'd evacuated the village earlier in the evening, after night had fallen so that the only ones left were the shinobi. The headman had been very unhappy with that, especially with the shiny new houses Yamato had built for him. However, when the ninja in question promised to build new ones for him if those were destroyed, he finally gave in.
Kakashi sent Naruto, Kankuro and Sai to try to engage the majority of the Rock shinobi and keep them distracted while he and Yamato found their squad leader. He was in a tree above the general melee, watching and evaluating the situation. Kakashi had spotted him and he and Yamato called on their years of ANBU training and approached silently from above.
He sensed them somehow, anyway and leapt from the tree, forcing them to give chase. Yamato sent a Mokuton branch out to him, but it was dodged. He let loose a quiet curse and released it, turning to run after him.
Kakashi decided it wasn't worth the hassle for secrecy and, hands moving faster than Yamato could see it, he formed the signs and encased the nin in a giant water bubble. Yamato sent his mokuton in then and surrounded the nin in branches, holding him still and Kakashi released the bubble.
He touched the button on his neck. "Target acquired. Retreat."
"Understood." Sai's voice came through over the earpiece.
