It always amazed Gaara how Naruto’s hair could be so messy and yet so soft at the same time, not like his that was always caked with sand no matter how often he washed it and he knew it was because of the sand armour. Still he wouldn’t give up the protection even if it did mean he could have hair like the blondes because, right now at least, he had the blondes.
He was sleeping with his head resting in Gaara’s lap as he carded his fingers through the bright sunny locks and he found it incredibly calming and felt that he too could almost sleep if he wasn’t so worried about Shukaku who was still there threatening despite his growing control over the demon.
Naruto shifted and mumbled in his sleep, turning his head further into Gaara’s hand because he had stopped moving it and Gaara felt a small smile playing on the corner of his lips as he moved his hand again eliciting a contented sigh from Leaf chunin and turned his gaze from the blondes peaceful face to look out over his village.
The two were sitting on the cliffs that surrounded the village watching the sunset nestled and protected from the swirling winds by Gaara’s sand but little breezes stirred their clothes and kept them relatively cool.
The village was so peaceful these days and Gaara couldn’t help but let himself believe that he had something to do with that. After his father’s death he had taken up the position of Kazekage despite the counsel’s preference to his to siblings and had set about fixing all of his father’s mistakes.
Though he knew it was bad to speak ill of the dead Gaara could not help but be angry at his late father for neglecting his people the way that he had and allowing the village to come into such chaos and disrepair. Maybe if he hadn’t have neglected its problems so and reached out for aid from Konoha like they did now the whole incident with Orochimaru all those years ago may not have happened and he would still be alive.
But then I wouldn’t be here now like I am, thought Gaara with a sad sigh, I wouldn’t have Naruto or Sasuke or Sakura or anyone else as a friend anymore because I would never have met them and I’m sorry father but I wouldn’t give them up to have you back, not ever.
As his thoughts ran deeper his eyes followed the trails of the roads beneath him and skimmed over the curves of the buildings. This village, it used to be his fathers but it was his now and he would do anything he could to protect it and show the people who lived here that he wasn’t just the monster that they thought he was.
And I’m not a monster, I have changed, Gaara decided and tugged on Naruto’s hair a little to wake him up, it’s because of you and your stupid ideal, those stupid ideals that you made my ideals too. I’ll protect my precious people and I’ll get stronger for them and not just for myself and to justify my own existence. I will make them my existence and hopefully I will gain one of my own in return.
He turned his eyes form the village bellow and back to the blonde in his lap before tugging at the golden strands again until a cerulean blue eye peeped open a stared up into black rimmed turquoise, “ it’s getting late,” Gaara murmured to the sleepy Jinchuriki, “We should get back before it gets cold and dark. I don’t want you doing something stupid and falling off the cliffs.”
Naruto blinked quickly trying to clear the haze of sleep from his eyes and stretched himself out along the sand enjoying the heat that it had soaked up through the course of the day before wrapping his arms around the redheads waist and burying his face in the cloth of the robes covering his stomach, “thank you for letting me stay here Gaara and not just sending me straight back to Leaf like you should have.”
Gaara threaded his hand back into Naruto’s hair to try and make him look at him but the blonde buried his head further in to Kazekage’s body and Gaara knew that he was crying or at least was about to start.
“Naruto,” that was all Gaara could manage to say in his quite voice. Since the blonde had arrived a week ago he had seen him shed so many tears and he had listened to everything the blonde had managed to choke out around his sobs both about Kiba and about Sasuke and though he knew about most of it already from the Uchiha in the letter he had sent it nearly ripped his heart out and he was reminded all those of how it felt all those years ago when he killed Yashamaru but this time however it seemed even worse.
Naruto always seemed just like sunshine to him, so warm and clean and totally unescapable because even after night fell you knew it would be back the next day, just as bright just as persistent to light up everything, to touch everything and give it life and to see that breaking, to know that it might not rise the next day, that it might just give up was utterly terrifying for him to even think about let alone have it happen right before his eyes.
Just as Gaara was about to open his mouth to utter rare words of comfort he felt a vibration in the sand. Someone was running toward them from the north and he guessed that it was one of his siblings coming from the Kazekage tower considering that they were the only ones who knew where he and the blonde would be.
“Gaara, Naruto!” At first the shout was distant but Gaara knew that it was his sister coming to get them and he knew that Naruto knew it was here to from the way he curled deeper into Gaara and discreetly started using the fabric of his robes to dry his tears on.
It wasn’t long before Temari came running across the sand to land on her knees panting before them, unable to get her words out around her need to breath and her black robes in disarray.
“A-a scroll,” She gasped and swallowed like a fish out of water as she fought for air, “it c-came from Konoha about fift-teen m-minutes ago, its urgent” she fumbled with the pockets of her robes looking for the scroll before pulling it out with a little difficulty and thrusting it into Naruto’s palm, “I-it’s for you.”
With her message and the scroll finally delivered she fell to her side, laying on the sand and staring at the darkening orange hues of the sky above her, chest rising and falling frantically as she fought her breathing back to normal.
Confused and a little concern for Temari, Naruto removed himself from Gaara’s lap before placing the scroll on the ground and releasing its seal so he could read it.
Gaara tried not to look over Naruto’s shoulder but he couldn’t help it, he was curious, which was an interesting emotion for him, but before he could sneak his peek the blonde let out a broken wail before curling in on himself.
“What is it Naruto,” Temari asked jumping up from the sand, “did something happen to Konoha, were they attacked, do they need reinforcements at all.”
“It’s not true, it’s not true,” Naruto whimpered quietly as he watched his tears fall like raindrops onto the parchment of the scroll, smudging the ink.
Gaara placed his hands on Naruto’s shoulders and tried to get him to calm down and tell him what was wrong. If Konoha was in trouble then he needed to know in order to organise reinforcements and other aid but before he knew it he had an armful of crying distraught blonde who was clinging to him like he was the last solid thing on earth.
As Gaara wrapped his arms around Naruto’s shoulders he watched over the messy of blonde hair as Temari pick up the scroll and glance over it before her eyes widened and her hands started shaking so badly that she dropped it.
“Temari what is it,” Gaara asked his concern rising as he cradled Naruto’s head into the crook of his neck and shoulder, “what’s happened to Konoha.”
“It’s not K-Konoha,” she turned her dark eyes to her younger brother and swallowed before continuing, “Its Sasuke Uchiha, he- he’s dead.”
Gaara felt a coldness settle over his heart and he held onto Naruto tighter as heavy sobs wracked his body, “what happened to him,” blood, there would be blood Gaara promised himself and he felt Shukaku stir inside him at the thought of a slaughter through vengeance and revenge.
“He-he got sick and thought it was just a normal cold, but Tsunade said it was pneumonia and by the time he checked himself into the hospital it was too- it was too late. His lungs were f-filled with fluid and he was barely conscious, could barely breath on his own,” Temari, who was usually such a hard strong bitch of a ninja had to cover her mouth with her hand to stop a sob from escaping as she imagined the Uchiha in that state, “he had time to write his will and then that was it. She-she thinks it was b-because he had been running around in the rain so much and his body just couldn’t handle the cold and the wet.”
“Uchiha never liked the cold, the rain,” Gaara mused As he felt Shukaku settle when he realised there would be no murderous rampage, “I always thought he would die in battle, in the field,” the redhead rubbed small circles on the blonde’s back who was still crying, “ what was he doing running around in the rain?”
“For me,” Naruto choked out between his sobs, “he was worried about me and all I ever did was take him for granted and now he’s gone,” the last was said in a wail, “I wanna go home, I have to go home for his funeral.”
Gaara unwarped his arms from around Naruto and looked him in the eyes, trying to tell him that he wasn’t responsible for any of this, that it wasn’t his fault but he knew it was hopeless. The blonde would blame himself no matter what anyone said or what anyone did, it was just the way he was.

“Since everyone’s here now I guess I’ll begin,” Said Tsunade as she regarded the group of sombre ninja that had gathered in her office before sitting down at her desk and setting a scroll and a few letters upon its surprisingly clean surface, “alright so let’s begin.”
She tried to keep her voice from cracking and her hand steady as she broke the seal of the scroll but not for herself or for her own pride but for the battle hardened ninja before her, the ninja that were trying so hard to keep it together even though it was clear that they all felt as if a piece had just been ripped out of them. That piece was Sasuke Uchiha.
It was true that he was closer to some then he was to others and this time was harder for them but what was also true was that the raven had been a large part of all of their lives, even hers, and his loss was felt by all of them and with one last deep breath the Hokage steeled herself and began to read from the scroll that now lay open in her hands.
Tsunade tried to think as to why she was so upset, she knew the Uchiha wasn’t really dead but still the thought of not seeing him in her office regularly or treating his injuries in the hospital, of not hearing her little blonde idiot yell the word bastard randomly but often to only be greeted by silence made her feel a little hollow inside
“I know you’ve all probably heard this a million times but if your reading this now I’m dead which means that these are my final words to you all and I figured that since this is my will then I really shouldn’t lie,” Tsunade looked up then to see how everyone was doing, to make sure that they were all still with her and what she saw made her wish that she didn’t have to continue.
Sakura on a couch sat with Ino and the two young konoichi who were normally at one another’s throats half the time had hold of one tanned hand each and were doing their best not to cry in front of the shaking blonde between them while Kakashi stood behind them with his hand on the top of Naruto’s head while Sai sat on the ground at his feet and rested against his legs.
Lee held a shocked looking Tenten in a tight embrace and Neji held a hankerchief to Hinata’s small nose before instructing her to blow in his no nonsense tone while Gai stood in a corner with his eyes fixed upon the wall behind her head as he valiantly failed to hold back a dramatic river of tears that were flowing down his face and creating a pool at his feet.
Shikamaru sat on the floor in the centre of the room with his hands in that familiar position and it was at that moment that Tsunade realised that the Nara knew what was really going on and that he was deciding whether or not to end this entire charade now that he saw what it was putting all his friends through. Tsunade also became curious when the that Nara’s eyes would stray to the physically healed but still mentally questionable Kiba who had Shino in his arms before returning to stare at her but not before she saw the murderous look being hidden in their depths. Choji sat next to the Nara and it was clear that he could sense the tension rolling off of his teammate but for one he wasn’t eat, the bag of BBQ flavoured chips set firmly aside.
The only ones missing in this picture were the Sand siblings who were not able to leave Suna but sent word that they would be there in two days to attend the Uchiha’s funeral.
“The thing I most want to come clean about is what happened two years ago. When I left the village and all of you behind with the intention of never returning it wasn’t just because I wanted to get stronger so I could destroy my brother, it was also because I was ashamed,” Tsunade paused in her reading, not liking where this as going and decided to read ahead on her own quickly. She wouldn’t keep Sasuke’s final words from his friends but she at least had to make sure that she was prepared if she had to read anything to shocking, however what she read made a sad smile grace her lips.
“I was ashamed of myself for letting myself feel happy, for letting you all begin to replace the family I had lost when I was younger and made a vow of hatred to avenge them regardless of my own wants and needs. I know I never expressed how I felt about you all or said anything even after Naruto dragged my arse back but I want you to know how much you helped fill the void inside me and it wasn’t just team seven that helped me either, It was the entire rookie nine and team Gai as well, especially you Neji who opened my eyes to what my life could have become if I let my rage eat me alive. I’m glad we both found our separate peace in the end.”
“You were all there for me in your own ways even when I didn’t want you to be, especially Naruto,” Tsunade paused and watched the blonde’s head snap up at the mention of his name and tears begin to collect in the corners of his eyes, threatening to spill, “Naruto I want tyou to know how much you mean to me even though I was always pushing you away all the time. I never meant what I said when I called you worthless and a loser all those times, I was just afraid of how important you were becoming to me and how close I felt to you but it was stupid to think like that and I was a fool to treat you and everyone else that way.”
“Thank you all for making me realise that there was more to my life than the revenge that was consuming me. There is nothing that I can ever give you to show how much I have come to care and love you all but hopefully what I have left you in my will, will go a little ways toward that. I’ve also left a letter for each of you. It is up to you whether or not you decide to read them but I just want you all to know how I really felt about you all even though I could never express it in life. I’ll be waiting for you guys on the other side, but I don’t want to see you here to soon okay. Goodbye”

The small restaurant was strangely quite despite that fact that it was half filled with ninja. What was stranger still was that they all had an envelope in front of them but none were opening them, they all just sat there staring at the white rectangles like they didn’t know what they were.
After about fifteen minutes of the group siting in silence around the tables they had joined together Shika snapped, “This is ridiculous,” he declared and grabbed his envelope before slicing open one side with a kunai and pulling out his letter and skimming over its contents.
They all held their breaths waiting and watching for Shikamaru’s reaction to the contents. Shika and Sasuke had been close but they didn’t expect the Nara to burst out laughing which is exactly what he did.
“Umm Shika,” Choji placed a concerned hand on his friends shoulder, worried that the thin genius may have finally lost it.
“I'm alright Choji it just all this letter is, is every possible move I could have made in the shogi game we were playing together and every possible move to counter me and it ends in me losing. Trust that jerk to beat me from beyond the grave,” Shikamaru took a deep breath and whipped his streaming eyes before picking up the letter again, “Shika I'm leaving my shogi set in your possession. I know you have a million but my mother gave it to me and it means a lot to me, keep it safe and well played would you.”
“Well if Shikamaru is brave enough,” said Choji picking up his letter to also be followed by Ino who was spurred on by both her teammates, “then so am I.”
Soon the silent restaurant was filled with the sound of tearing envelopes as everyone took up there separate letters and ripped them open, eager to see the ravens last personal words to them.
“I know we may not have seen eye to eye about anything our entire lives Kiba but I know that you will protect what I have given you,” the Inuzuka mumbled out, catching everyone’s attention, “the pendent of the Uchiha crest that I wear has been passed down through the various generations of my clan and it is invaluable to me. I know how much you value your own clans marking and I only hope that you will now protect mine with as much reverence,” to say the least the Inuzuka was shocked, he had never expected an olive branch like this from the Uchiha but it made him happy to feel that perhaps he and the dead man now had some form of peace between them but glancing down the page he felt a smirk rising as he read a warning to himself.
Shino told me what happened and I trust him to take care of punishing you for me but if you ever hurt Naruto ever again and I will come back from the grave just to drag you down under the earth with me then I will make your eternity in the afterlife a living hell regardless of whether that is where we are or not.
Back and forth now they went, reading out particular parts of each letter and telling one another what the Uchiha and left them. Kakashi had to hide his face as he read the raven’s letter and his voice cracked as he read aloud.
“I always thought of you as a father Kakashi and you were so much better to me than my own was. I looked up to you and despite your past I always found myself striving to be as great a ninja as you. I was so thrilled when you decided to teach me that Chidori, I wanted to make you proud of me.”
Kakashi’s voice caught in his throat and he ran a hand through his impossibly tall silver hair before speaking for himself, “I was proud of you Sasuke, you were a great ninja. Ah he left me his sword, typical.”
“He left me half of his books, he hopes they will help me,” Said Sai with a genuine smile, “it seems he’s left you the other half Sakura, all of his medical ones,” a frown marred his smile as he began to read the letter aloud, “the first time I met you and saw your art work I was amazed, it was absolutely beautiful and I was inspired so when I want home after training that day I tried to do some art of my own. It’s terrible by your standards but it gave me peace so I began to draw whenever I became upset until I filled an entire book. I want you to have it and know that something you did inspired me.”
“he left me his home,” Naruto’s voice shook as he said it, “as well as the entire Uchiha compound, its training grounds and everything,” Naruto screwed his eyes shut to try and stop himself from crying, he had cried to much these past few days and as he listened to the astonished murmurs spread through the group he read the letter to himself.
I'm sorry Naruto, I never should have told you what I did about my feelings for you, it confused you and it made you angry and it was wrong of me and I'm sorry. I never wanted to lose you as a friend and…and it doesn’t matter how much you hate me I will always love you and you deserve so much that I wish I could give you. That’s why I’ve left you my home and the Uchiha compound, you deserve a home. The Uchiha compound may be filled with ghosts of the past but I believe that the light you brought to my life will be more than enough to banish them. I can never thank you enough for everything you did for me Naruto, I love you, goodbye.
“Oh wow Naruto,” Ino exclaimed with a bright smile, “Its not surprising htough, Sasuke really cared for you,” she reached across the table and took his hand noticing that he was having difficulty fighting back tears again, “he would have wanted you to have a home of your own, a place that’s really worthy of you and now you have a place to make your own clan.”
Naruto tried to smile as he squeezed Ino’s hand to reassure her that he was okay but he really wasn’t. How could he be okay when his best friend and teammate had just died and he hadn’t been here to say goodbye to him. In fact the last thing he had said to him was that he hated him and he never wanted to see him again so how was he supposed to be alright?
“Alright everyone lets order,” Choji said loudly, “we shouldn’t be mourning Sasuke’s death, we should be celebrating his life and all that he meant to us!!!”
“Indeed!!!!” Lee agreed and raised his glass of water, “and we should all make a toast in recognition of Sasuke’s youthful life and the fact that we were all touched by his existence.”
Everyone raised their glasses as quickly as they possible could, all eager to show that Sasuke was more than just a bastard to them and even
Naruto who was only just managing to fight down guilt and sorrow raised his as well. Sasuke was his friend and it didn’t matter whether he felt guilty or not, he wasn’t going to let it eat him alive, not after Sasuke had given him a real home and so much…love.

Somewhere else in the land of fire deep in a cave demon red eyes stared at a scrap of paper with fury as the hand of their owner chocked the life from the messenger that had brought it to him.
Before the body had even hit the ground and begun to get cold he was out of the cave and heading for the surface.
He knew his partner would follow him and he knew that none of the other ninja that resided in the cave would dare try and stop him, not after feeling his chakra flare so dangerously with his emotions.
His emotions were dangerous; they made him even more volatile, even more deadly, particularly when said emotions concerned his younger brother.
