Stopping by
A slightly surprised voice came from behind Ryuuzaki as he inspected the private office of the inspector, Light Yagami.
“Ryuuzaki, you’re early?” It was more a question then a statement. Light quickly shut the door and placed his briefcase on the large rustic wood deck. Definitely not a standard issue desk like the metal ones the rest of the department used. No, this antique looking piece of oak had to have been purchased and brought here.
“Well, I left my team with the detectives handling the murders. I thought maybe we could have a little talk, Light.” Ryuuzaki had been waiting for an opportunity to speak with Light in private. The two had spent much time together in the past and had a lot in common and Ryuuzaki considered Light to be his closet friend, and also his biggest rival. The only thing that kept them from really enjoying their friendship was Light’s lack of integrity.
Ryuuzaki picked up a framed picture of Light shaking hands with several important looking business men. Nothing particularly out of order, so he placed it back. In fact, nothing in this room was out of order. All the pictures, framed documents, knick-knacks, everything, were things you would except to see in an office, almost like it was staged. The only thing odd was how spotless, and well organized this room was. He had never seen a police office that looked so clean.
“Have you hired a cleaning service to come here?” Ryuuzaki swiped a finger over a shelf, and held it up for Light to inspect. Spotless.
“Yeah, the crew here doesn’t do a very good job. But I hardy see how that is relevant. I thought I was going to explain the details of my case to everyone.” Light moved closer to him, watching the movements of the agent closely.
“I didn’t see the point in it, considering you would most likely lie.” Ryuuzaki wasn’t about to be fooled by the charismatic detective like most were. He knew Light well enough to know that he was not only a genius with a strong sense of justice, but that his idea of justice was one that was twisted. And that Light would stop at nothing and sacrifice anyone to obtain what he desired, willing to break any law in the pursuit of justice. How hypocritical.
One more than one occasion Ryuuzaki had questioned Light’s tactics while they worked on case. Though he was always pushing the rules, he never really broke them, only bent them severely. Ryuuzaki had kept a very close eye on Light, watching for the time that he eventually stepped over the line. The detective was far too cunning to slip up before, but this was the first time Light had done anything this big, actually killing police. Ryuuzaki knew this was his chance, all he had to do was look in the right place, and he would have his evidence. Working with Light taught him one very important thing, his friend couldn’t be trusted.
Light took a step back a put on a shocked look, right on queue, looking much like a professional actor. Ryuuzaki felt a wave of annoyance rush over him as Light went through the movements of denial.
“I don’t like it when you make such accusations, Ryuuzaki.” He budged past Ryuuzaki and took a seat in the overstuffed chair behind the desk. Something else that must have been privately bought.
“Please take a seat.” Light waved toward the smaller chair across from the desk. Guess Light wasn’t gonna let Ryuuzaki take his chair today? Damn, the thing looked comfortable too.
Ryuuzaki slouched down in the seat and pulled his knees to his chest, kicking off his shoes in the process. The two men stared warily at each other for a few tense minutes, neither saying a word. Things were always a game between them, a very dangerous game. One false move and it would be over. Both of the men seemed to know this as they took their time on making a move.
Where to go from here? Beating around the bush was never his style. In fact Ryuuzaki found that the direct approach was often the best at knocking people off guard. He was going to have to pull out all the stops if he was going up against this young genius.
“Light. I thought you should know, you are a suspect in the deaths of the police officers. In fact at this point, you are the only suspect in our case.” Ryuuzaki nibbled on his thumbs as he searched Light’s face for any sort of real emotion, finding nothing but a cold stare that gave away no sign of emotion.
“Well, that doesn’t seem like you’re doing a very good job. I can’t blame you for adding me as a suspect, a good agent must consider all leads. But you aren’t considering all leads if I am the only suspect. What about the Yakuza? Other gangs? Or other police? I must say I am a little disappointed that you wouldn’t consider these very likely possibilities.” Light kept his composure calm and collected as he made his slightly offensive argument.
“I have considered the other possibilities, and have rejected them all. Other police would have nothing to gain or even a reason to committed these murders. Smaller gangs wouldn’t have the access, or man power, to pull it off in this territory, or even the intel to begin with. And as for the Yakuza, they wouldn’t have a reason to take out all of their moles, nor would it be beneficial. No, I would be willing to wager that you are responsible for this.”
“So, what would my motive be? And what evidence do you have?” Light folded his hands in front of him and gave a little smirk.
The damn bastard was getting off on this. He’s not even worried, sitting there so smug. He knew damn well that Ryuuzaki didn’t have enough evidence yet. Of course he couldn’t with they way Light covered his tracks. Light was far too intelligent to be caught so easily. And by the look on his face, he was enjoying this greatly.
“You took out all the competition with rival cops, and took out the only person with morals on your team, Mogi. Without them in the way, you have the perfect opening to go undercover with the Yakuza. You have been unhealthy obsessed with them for too long. I believe you may have gone off the deep end, as they say. And as for evidence, that will come. You know I don’t have enough for an arrest now or we wouldn’t be sitting here so casually discussing it. Listen to me Light, you will mess up and I will be there waiting. But without a doubt, I will have enough to convict you by New Year.”
Another long moment passes of silence as Ryuuzaki tried to will his gaze to burn through his former teammate, looking so smug on the other side of the desk.
“Just over two months, huh? Ryuuzaki, I am sorry you feel this way. And I am also sorry you are wasting your time.” Light shot Ryuuzaki a playboy smile. “Because I am not responsible for this.”
Light got up and opened the door. “Now if you will please excuse me? I have real work to do.”
“Of course.” Ryuuzaki shuffled his feet back into his shoes and left the office, turning back to say, “I’ll be seeing you around, Light.” He gave a little wave good-bye and flashed a sincerely friendly smile.
*************************
Hinata slammed the rusty door of her pickup, and swept the parking lot of the Denny’s for a familiar head of red hair, nowhere to be seen.
She hadn’t been able to beat Gaara to an appointment in years, not since he took over the role of head of the house, and stopped being crazy all the time.
It just wasn’t like him to be less than fifteen minutes early for anything, and was never late. Where was he? It was eleven on the dot, but she didn’t even see his car.
What if something happened? He wouldn’t just forget, they made this lunch date a week ago, and Gaara’s memory was like an elephant’s.
Fear began to creep up her spine as the minutes passed. 11:10, she felt sick to her stomach and began to shake in fear. What could have happened?
She couldn’t wait any longer, panic was over taking her. Opening up her truck she began to search the ashtray for two quarters for the pay phone, when she heard a car pull up beside her.
Hinata turned so fast she bumped her head against the steering wheel.
“Ouch!” She rubbed the sore lump, momentarily forgetting the other car until the door slammed shut. He looked in the worst state she had seen him in since Neji died.
“Gaara, what happened to you? You alright? You look terrible.” Hinata ran to his side, taking in the sight.
The circles around his eyes were darker then normal, if that was possible, and his skin paler. His outfit was a pair of jeans and a wrinkled t-shirt, way too simple for a man who put a lot of thought into the message his clothes put off. And his hair was a disaster, spiky on one side, flatten on the other, looking like he just crawled out of bed. In short, he was a mess.
“I, ah… had a long night.” He rubbed the back of his neck, and shrugged. “Sorry, I am late.”
“Yeah, no problem. Umm, should we still do this. Are you up for it?” Hinata motherly sense kicked in and all she wanted to do was tuck Gaara into bed and bring him some soup. Like he’d ever let her do such a thing.
Gaara put his serious face back on and crossed his arms. “Yes, I’m fine.”
“Oh, okay. Well then?” Hinata gestured towards the front door and they went inside.
The smell of bacon and coffee hung in the air. This place always smelled like breakfast no matter the time.
A small brunette quickly rushed to meet them as they waited by the register.
“Table or booth?” She asked, grabbing two menus from the holder.
“Um, booth? Hinata ventured, giving Gaara a questioning look, who shrugged in indifference.
“Alright, this way.” She led them through the crowded restaurant, to an open booth in the back near the kitchen.
The sound of pans clunking interrupting the girl as she tried to give speech, “Welcome to Denny’s. My name is Becky, and I’ll will be serving you today. Is there anything I can start you off with?”
“Coffee. Black.” Gaara didn’t even look at the perky girl as he slumped in the booth.
“Okay and you?” She placed the menus in front of them.
“Orange juice, please?” Hinata grabbed the menu and quickly began looking for the pancakes.
“Sure thing. I’ll be right back with those.”
“Okay, thanks” Hinata smiled cheerfully at the pleasant girl, trying to make up for her company’s rudeness.
Once the girl left, Hinata really went to work searching the menu. When Gaara didn’t even make an attempt to look at his, she push it closer and ask, “Aren’t you getting anything?”
“Yeah. Coffee.”
“Food. Are you getting any food? Their pancakes are good. I love pancakes, but Light doesn’t. So I don’t make them often. Please get something. I’d feel stupid eating if you weren’t.” She gave him a well practiced puppy dog face, one that no longer worked on Light, and she giggled inside to see it still worked on Gaara.
“Fine.” He grabbed to menu, glanced it over, and quickly placed it back down.
“How do you make your mind up so quickly? I know what I want, but I still don’t know what I want. Does that make any sense?”
“Yeah, actually it does. I know just how you feel.” A brush of red cross Gaara’s cheeks then quickly dissipated.
“Really? I never could imagine you being indecisive.” That idea pleased her. Gaara, being flip floppy. That’s funny.
“Anyways, Gaara, why are you having a bad day?”
He folded his arms again, and sat up straight in his seat. “I told you I’m not having a bad day. I had a bad night.”
“Okay, fine, don’t tell me.” Hinata crossed her arms in a poutty manner and sat back, copying him. She could’ve have pushed it, but with the mood he was in, she probably wouldn’t get far.
The perky waitress came back carrying a coffee mug and a tall glass of orange juice.
“Here we go.” She sat the cups in front of the correct people. “Are you already to order?”
The waitress looked at Gaara, who pointed to Hinata.
“What, I’m first? Oh, sorry.” She grabbed the menu again and searched for the pancakes she wanted. For some reason she couldn’t order them unless she could point at the picture. “These. With strawberries, please?”
“Whipped cream, Hun?” The waitress asked while scribbling down the order.
“Oh yes, please!” She hadn’t had pancakes like this in a long time. It made her mouth water just thinking about it.
“And you, Dear?” She gave a warm smile to the red head, who returned it with a icy stare.
“Toast. Wheat. That’s it.”
“Okay, be back in a minute with that.” Again the waitress scampered off, yelling the order out the cooks as soon as she passed through the swinging doors.
“Toast? That’s not food.” He’d tricked her, and she wasn’t very happy about it.
“It’s not? Then what would you call it?” The red head gave her a little smirk that made her forget about being mad. At least he was smiling.
The best she could do was a make a little snarl face in retaliation.
Minutes passed as they both worked on their drinks, having ran out of small talk already. Soon the food came, all the plates on one arm of the skilled waitress and two glasses of water, plus syrup in the other.
“I thought you might want some water.” She placed the food in front of them. “Anything else I can get for you?”
“No. It all looks so great.” Hinata grin at the tall stack of pancakes, dripping with strawberries. The waitress smiled then left.
Hinata quickly grabbed a fork and dug in, while Gaara ignored his toast.
Realizing at what a pig she was being compare to him, she stopped, feeling guilty.
“It’s fine. Go ahead,” Gaara said.
“Yeah, okay.” She still refrained and slowly nibbled at her food.
“It was helpful. I’m talking about the call about the FBI.” Hinata froze, she hadn’t realized they were going to be talking business today. He normally tried to keep her out of it, saying it was best for her not to get involved in these things.
“Listen. Things are going to be getting pretty rough around here for the next few months. I need you to stay away.” He grabbed the thermos and topped off his coffee.
“What, but why? We just started seeing each other again.” Granted staying away would make life easier for her where Light was involved, but there was no denying how much she missed talking with Gaara. Her heart started to ache at the idea of losing him again.
“I can’t say exactly why. You just need to trust me on this.”
Damn, she hated when he pulled this bullshit on her. Why was everyone always trying to keep her in the dark? Didn’t she have anything to offer, anything of value? Didn’t people realize that she was already in things too deep and they should just stop trying to protect her. She wasn’t a child.
“Fine,” she said defeated, throwing her napkin on her plate. “But you should know that Light told me he’s really close to bringing them down. And that the FBI isn’t going anywhere for a few months. Don’t get caught up in their investigation. The guy in charge, Ryuuzaki, is really smart. Maybe even smarter the Shikamaru. Watch out for him.”
“I’ll try.” Gaara grabbed the ticket from the edge on the table, quickly slipped there when the waitress walked by, and reached for his wallet.
Hinata stood up while Gaara grabbed the money with a generous tip and dropped it on the table.
“You know I don’t tell you the things I overhear so that you can put yourself in bad situations. I do it to help keep you out of trouble.” God, it felt strange snapping at him, it has been a long time since she was daring enough to do that. Being with Gaara made her act like a sixteen year old again, ready to take on anything.
“Hinata,” was all he said as he stood, staring at her deeply.
Damn, how was he able to make her feel like a child throwing a fit with just a look?
“Just promise you’ll be careful. Revenge isn’t worth it if you die, is it?” She gave him the puppy dog look again, begging him to give his word he wouldn’t take any risks.
Gaara didn’t answer. That was fine. She probably wouldn’t like the answer anyways.
*****************************
“Hey, how ‘bout another beer?” Inuyasha swung his empty bottle in the air.
“Yes, coming right up.” The red head quickly ran to the bar and grabbed the beer Sai had waiting.
“Here you go,” she handed Inuyasha the fresh beer and placed the empty bottle on her tray. “Anything else?”
Inuyasha chugged the beer and pulled the blonde girl on his lap in even closer to his chest.
“Yeah, keep ‘em coming. Hey Misa, you want something?”
The blonde girl shook her head, making the pigtails swing into her face, and cheerfully said, “Nope. I’m good.”
“Okay then.” The red head left the couple and returned back to the bar, stopping to check on customer sitting there.
“Can I get you anything?” She blushed slightly and brushed a stray red lock of hair behind her ear.
“No.” Sesshomaru didn’t even bother with eye contact.
“Okay, just yell if you need anything.” The girl went about her business, grabbing another beer for the pair of blonds making out on the lounge chair.
“He’s being an idiot today,” Sai commented to Sesshomaru and placed a bottle of mineral water next the almost empty glass of rum. Then he opened up the book he had been thumbing through all night. The latest in self help books that the pale man was always reading. This one was titled, How to save your marriage. An interesting choice considering Sai wasn’t married. But he did seem to have a thirst to understand people, all people, and was constantly trying to achieve that by reading.
Sesshomaru turned to his brother, who currently had his hand inching it’s way further up Misa’s shirt. Damn. Why did he always get stuck babysitting?
Inuyasha didn’t really do anything, he just hung around and mooched off the family. His father never held Inuyasha to the same standards he held Sesshomaru to, saying that they needed to take care of the youngest son. Sesshomaru could admit now that he used to be bothered by the way their father treated them so differently, but now he understood. Inuyasha’s mother spoiled the boy to the point that he was worthless. After his mother died, Inuyasha came to live with his father and Sesshomaru. They had been working on making a man out of him, but it was definitely a slow process.
Sesshomaru got up and stood in front of the two making a spectacle of themselves. At least the bar was slow, most of the people were down at the Casino this late at night.
He waited a good minute without being acknowledged before he took action. He put his foot on the top of the chair next to his brother’s head and pushed, knocking the lounge chair over and sending both of the idiots tumbling off.
Inuyasha jumped up, ignoring his girlfriend sprawled on the floor and yelled, “What the fuck did you do that for?”
“You are disgracing yourself,” Sesshomaru deadpanned.
“Oh are you saying it’s a disgrace to be with me?” Misa’s high pitched voice hurt his ears as she whined.
“Yes, I am.” Sesshomaru quirked an eyebrow at the loud young lady who rolled her eyes in response.
“I’ll be with who I want. You can’t do shit about it.” Inuyasha took a drunken swing at his brother.
Sesshomaru stepped to the left and Inuyasha just about fell over then he met no resistance, stumbling before regaining his stance.
“Screw you,” he cursed, “We’re leaving.” He grabbed Misa by the arm and stormed out of the bar, swearing all the way the to coat check making sure he was heard.
“Have a nice night!” The red head waitress yelled after them with a satisfied grin.
Sesshomaru repressed a chuckle to that and grabbed the chair, setting it upright. Then he returned to his drink.
The waitress went to work cleaning up the mess left by Inuyasha, who didn’t even leave payment, nor or else a tip.
“Don’t worry. I’ll put it on his tab… with tip.” Sai gave a menacingly little grin, about the only time his smile looked real, and put his book back in the counter.
“He is such a fool. I don’t understand why my father protects him. The boy is useless.”
“Well, he does make for some good entertainment. And the girls seem to like him. That’s the third one this month. He likes the crazy ones though.”
“Don’t remind me. The one he dated a few month’s back, the spitfire, Kogame, was it? She broke into his house and locked herself in his bathroom last month.”
“Really?” Sai eyebrow quirked up with interest. “I remember her. She was that girl he dumped in the middle of the party your father was throwing here. That bitch made such a fuss that I had to have the bouncers through her out. It was kinda funny. So what happened?”
“Inuyasha couldn’t get the bitch to come out, so he just went to bed. Said he thought if he’d ignored her she would leave like some kind of a stray cat. Dumbass sleeps so hard, he didn’t even wake up until she chained him to the bed.” Sesshomaru did his best to contain the smirk on his lips. Now the whole thing was quite a funny story, but then it was just another annoyance for him to deal with.
“Handcuffed? Oh, that is good. How long till you saved him?”
“You figured out that I had to be the one that saved him?”
“Aren’t you always? Like you said, the boy can’t take care of himself.”
“He spent two days in the care of that crazy stalker, before Father sent me to find him. By the time I got there, the girl was crying in the corner and Inuyasha was completely nude. I didn’t ask.” Sesshomaru cracked open the water and took a slip.
Sai giggled quickly and asked, “So where’s the girl now, may I ask?”
“I do not know. I decided it was best to let her off with a warning. Inuyasha still swears he sees her, watching him.”
“Really? Not like you to let anyone off with a warning.”
Sesshomaru just shrugged and flashed a smile. No way would he get rid of anyone that could cause his brother so much entertaining worries. Inuyasha had been very careful about leaving doors and windows locked up, and watching the shadows carefully ever since the encounter. It would do him good to start living with some fear.
“Excuse me, Mister Sesshomaru?” The red head waitress stood at his side, her arms folded respectfully in front of her.
“Yes?” He stared at her curiously as she held out a brown wallet.
“He must’ve drop this when…” He took it and opened it. Sure enough Inuyasha’s ID was right in the front.
“Alright.” He took out the largest bill inside and gave it to the waitress. “I am sure he forgot to pull this out for you.”
“Well, I will make sure I tell him thank you next time he’s in.” She smile seductively and took the fifty, slightly rubbing her fingers against his in the process.
“Nicole. Will you call Shippo up from the game floor? I need to speak with him,” Sai instructed the young woman.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry, I’ll get him right now. Good-bye.” The girl hustled to the elevator and stepped in, flashing back a little smile before the doors closed.
“She did so well in the coatroom, I moved her to waitress. She’s doing good.” Sai grabbed the empty glass and made it disappear under the bar.
“Yes, she seems to handles the customers well,” Sesshomaru stated, still staring at the elevator door.
Sighing he reached for his own wallet and dropped payment next to his water.
“See you later.” Sai plastered on a well practiced smile, looking way too damn happy.
“Yeah, I will be…” Sesshomaru was interrupted by the thundering sound of footsteps running down the stairs next to the elevator.
Bankotsu looked out of breath and very relieve to see Sesshomaru when he came out of the staircase.
“Ahhh, I am glad I caught you.” He straightened his shirt before approaching Sesshomaru, leaning in to his ear, so not to be overheard. “Come with me, your father has jobs for us to do. Tonight.”
Sesshomaru nodded his in understanding and pulled on his overcoat. Getting back to work seemed like a good idea. With all the strange things going around, a bit of normalness would do him some good.
“Good-night,” he said to Sai.
The went outside and Bankotsu handed his ticket to the valet. They waited in silence until the dark blue Mercedes was brought to the curb and they climbed in, Bankotsu in the driver’s seat.
“Okay,” Bankotsu started, “We have two targets tonight. One is within our borders, and one out of them. Which do you want to start with.”
“Start out and work our way in.” Targets outside of their turf were normally smaller gangs that had decided not to play by the rules and needed to be punished. It was a large part of his job and tended to be mundane. So it would be more entertaining for them to get the boring one out of the way before they could go after the target close to home. They didn’t get many of those and they tended to be much more interesting.
“Alright, to the Ghetto we go.” Bankotsu pulled the car into drive and pulled away.
