The rest of the trip was uneventful. They’d travelled mostly in silence, concentrating on putting the distance behind them before sunset.
They made it to the river before the sun started to really descend. The village at the edge of Fire Country had been hit recently by the rogue nin. Several of the women had been raped, food had been stolen and a number of the outer buildings of the village had been burned.
They did what they could, helping the village to clean up. Sakura, Ino, and Hinata helped the women medically as much as they could. They were lucky in that there would be no… lingering physical effects of the attack. The emotional and mental impact was something else altogether. Sakura left them with directions to the Konoha hospital where they could get counseling, if they wanted to make the trip. Somehow, she doubted they would.
It was late by the time they’d finished at the village. They were offered rooms, but Kakashi thought it was better to keep moving, see if they could get closer to the nin before they stopped for the night. So, after a brief discussion, they chose South and followed the river.
An hour further along, however, they still hadn’t seen anything. The sun had set and they were hungry and tired. They found a place back from the river, still off the road and set up camp. “I don’t think I need to say this, but I will anyway. Don’t go off alone.” Kakashi looked from one couple to the next as they each nodded in turn. “Okay, each couple take a shift. An hour and a half. Sakura and I will go first. Neji and Hinata, you’re next. Lee and Tenten, third; Ino and Chouji fourth and Shikamaru and Temari last.”
There was some chaos as they all settled down, and took out their food for dinner. The girls huddled together again and the guys formed a loose semi-circle around the fire.
“Well, how did he take it?” Sakura asked Ino.
“Exactly how I thought he would. He wanted me to go back. I told him there was no way.” She shrugged one shoulder and took a bite of her rice ball. “I repeated what you said and he finally admitted that he didn’t want me near them, either.”
“Can we really blame them, though?” Tenten asked. “I mean, let’s be honest - we don’t like them getting into danger, do we? Even if we know they can handle it.”
“True. It doesn’t make it any easier to take, though. Isn’t Lee worred?”
“Yeah. But I’d bet it’s really no more than Neji or Shikamaru or Kakashi is.” She shrugged one shoulder. “I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet for him. I know it hasn’t for me. I don’t feel any different, not that I expect to, but…” she turned back to her food.
“I think Neji is a little different. He would have more of a problem if I was pregnant, but my abilities have been such a sore spot for us that I don’t know if he’s as worried.” She sighed. “Or that may just be wishful thinking.”
“Kakashi knows what I can do. He’s the one that taught me. Well, he and Tsunade, but he’s worked with me enough. If he couldn’t trust me to be good by now, he wouldn’t trust me with his life.” She took a bite of her vegetables.
“Doesn’t it bother you at all?” Temari spoke for the first time. “His age?”
Ino laughed. “I’m sure it served him well last night.”
Sakura blushed. “No. It doesn’t bother me. It’s not even something that I really think about. He’s just Kakashi.”
“I don’t know if I could do it. It would almost be like having sex with Gai.” Tenten wrinkled her nose.
“Isn’t Lee pretty much a copy of Gai?” Temari asked.
“Ha! Not even close.” Tenten stabbed a chopstick toward Temari. “Though, I will admit they are similar.” She frowned. “I really hope I can avoid the jumpsuits.” She shuddered and the girls laughed.
“Well, I don’t know if I could be with someone that much older than me.” Temari concentrated on her food and an uncomfortable silence fell for a few minutes.
“Do you want a girl or a boy?” Hinata asked Ino.
Ino thought about it a moment. “Girl. I think it would be fun to buy all sorts of dresses and do her hair and everything.”
Sakura let the baby conversation flow around her and she tuned it out. Her eyes went across the fire and met Kakashi’s. Somewhere in her subconscious, she had to have known that there would be questions about them. He was older than her. Hadn’t she asked those very questions the night before?
Even knowing they’d be asked didn’t make it any easier to hear. She sighed and forced herself to eat more.
The silence around the guy’s side of the fire was thick. Kakashi suspected it was because of him and after finishing his own dinner, he looked at the others, one by one. “I hear congratulations are in order.”
Lee looked up from his plate and smiled. “Thank you.”
“You, too?” Chouji asked.
Lee nodded. “Does that mean Ino is pregnant too?”
“Ino’s pregnant?” Shikamaru sat up amazingly fast for such a lazy man.
Chouji blushed. “Yeah. We’re, um, getting married too.”
Shikamaru just stared at him. “Well, damn. Congrats, man.” He held his hand out and Chouji shook it. There was a general round of handshaking.
“I’ll be asking Hinata’s father for her hand. Our clan is more traditional,” he said when they looked at him, “but I asked her first and she understands how things work with them,” Neji said quietly. He gave a small crooked smile. “And she’s not pregnant.”
They all laughed. “Well, that’s…three weddings and two babies…” Kakashi shook his head. “Congrats again.”
Chouji looked at Shikamaru. “So…” he started, but Shikamaru just waved a hand at him.
“No, I didn’t ask her and no she’s not pregnant.” He turned his attention back to the stars. “She’s not ready for that.”
There was nothing to say to that, so silence fell again. Kakashi felt distinctly out of place, even though, in reality, he wasn’t. He loved Sakura just as much they loved their women. Things for him and Sakura just weren’t as clear cut. He glanced at Shikamaru and a look of understanding passed between them.
“Kakashi-sensei, I feel I must ask a question.” Lee spoke up.
Kakashi valiantly fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Yes, Lee?” he asked, glad of the mask and headband. He wasn’t ready to answer these questions.
“Are you not a bit…old…for Sakura-chan?” Neji elbowed him in the side. “What?” he turned to his teammate.
“That’s not for us to say.” Neji glared at him.
“It’s okay.” Kakashi shrugged. “I am older than her.” His eyes found her across the fire. She was staring at her rice ball, picking it to pieces like she had at lunch. He tried to keep his voice matter-of-fact, but he wasn’t sure he pulled it off. He looked back at Lee. “She doesn’t seem to mind.”
It was all he could come up with. He had no valid reasons why he should be with her. He was still questioning himself about it. How could he defend their relationship to the rest of them if he himself, wasn’t sure it was the right thing for her?
And yet, he didn’t think he could just walk away from her, either. What a hell of a mess they’d gotten themselves into. Whether they’d had help or not - and he strongly suspected they did, they made the final choices. He’d made love to Sakura the night before, taking her virginity and letting her into the darkest parts of himself the no one had seen for too many years.
They were in it now. But what were they going to do with it?
A short time later, the girls stood up and started putting things away and making noise toward going to sleep. After some minor chaos, the couples got together and started to get settled. Kakashi watched with some amusement as Ino settled down on Chouji, draped almost completely over him. Neji spooned Hinata to the point where they were only taking up one mat. Shikamaru and Temari faced each other and Kakashi was surprised when she curled into him, and they tangled together. Then Lee and Tenten settled and he spooned her much like Neji and Hinata had, this time with his hand firmly protecting her belly.
He had a moment to consider the strange turn of events over the last twenty-four hours. One day ago, he was sitting at a bar, sipping sake and reading. And tonight he’d slept with his student, admitted to loving her, let someone in when he’d sworn for years he never would. Two of the Kunoichi are pregnant. And there were no less than three weddings in the offing. He shook his head at it all.
He turned to look at Sakura as she rolled out their mats. He shook himself, annoyed that he’d been lost in thought. He jumped up and moved over to her. “You don’t have to do that,” he said, quietly, not wanting to disturb the others.
She smiled at him. “It’s okay, I don’t mind.” Then her smile turned wicked. “Just don’t get used to it,” she said and poked him in the ribs.
He chuckled and stood. Determined to get the shadows out of her eyes, he said, “Come on, we don’t need to sit here to keep watch.” He took her hand and led her around to the other side of one of the big trees surrounding their camp. He sat against the trunk and pulled her down to sit up against him. She leaned her head back onto his shoulder and closed her eyes.
She felt his lips on her and her eyes flew open in surprise. “Kakashi—?” she whispered it, but was interrupted as his lips took hers. They moved over her, tasting them, feeling her tremble. He pulled back and she swallowed hard. “Your mask,” she whispered and reached up to put it back in place, but he took her hand and held it.
“They’re too preoccupied to worry about me.” He smiled and her breath caught. Once again, it was amazing to her that she could just look at his face. He watched her watch him another minute before kissing her again. When they pulled apart once more, he shifted her and reached behind himself. Pulling out his Icha Icha volume, he pulled her against him once more and opened it to the beginning.
She twisted yet again and glared at him. “Are you really going to read that?” She raised an eyebrow.
He chuckled. “No, I don’t need to read it. I know this one pretty much word for word. No, you are,” he said it so matter-of-factly, she just sat with her mouth open, gaping. He chuckled again. “You’ll catch a fly that way.”
She snapped her mouth closed and turned. She stared at the page a minute. “I am not reading Jiraiya’s smut.” She tried to cross her arms over her chest, but with Kakashi’s arms in the way it was impossible, which only succeeded in pissing her off worse. “Kakashi…” his name was a quiet warning.
He merely kissed her ear. “Listen, just do this for me. Read a bit of it. This is his early work. If you give it an honest try and still don’t like it, I promise to never bring it up again.”
She glanced over her shoulder, weighing him. “Okay. Deal.” She turned back around and pulled the book into her own hands. She bent over it and cursed herself. Jiraiya caught her and dragged her into the story immediately. She had to admit he had a way with painting pictures out of words that she hadn’t seen before. She had an image of the hero and heroine in her mind before she knew it. But when she paused to think something over, she realized that the picture of the hero in her mind was of Kakashi. She blushed and bent back to the book.
“I know you’re not that far in,” he whispered in her ear. “Why the blush?”
“Nothing,” she muttered. “It’s nothing.” She concentrated on the print on the page. She could see the waterfall, the green grass, the big bowl of blue sky overhead. She smelled the flowers in high summer and could feel the cool water splash over her feet as she watched the hero bathe in the waterfall.
“Didn’t we talk about this earlier today?” He was reminding her of lunch, she knew it.
She blew out a breath. “Okay. I can’t picture the hero Jiraiya describes.” She paused, glanced over her shoulder, then buried her face in the book. “I only seem to see you.” Her voice was almost non-existent, but he heard it.
He smiled. “You know, I’ve been reading these books for a very long time. But somehow, instead of the buxom blonde Jiraiya writes, she has pink hair and a much smaller…” He trailed off. “No, for some reason, the image of the blonde just doesn’t do it for me.”
He grunted when she pushed her elbow into his stomach, but she hid the smile that had spread over her face. Pink hair…
She went back to the book. A few minutes later, the lady moved out of the shadows, and stood at the edge of the pool. Now, Sakura thought, here’s the smut he’s so famous for… Except it wasn’t. Smut, that is, and she was surprised. It was a well written scene that discussed love as much or more than what was happening physically. Even so, she found herself getting warm and a little uncomfortable.
That was when she realized that it wasn’t just the reading. Kakashi had taken his gloves off. He had worked one hand up her shirt and was torturing one nipple. He pulled gently, pinched it to hardness, and cupped her breast in his hand. His lips were doing something crazy to her neck and she had to fight to suppress a moan.
His other hand came around front and plucked the book from her hands and set it aside. He pulled her leg wide and dragged his rough fingers up the sensitive inner part of her thigh. They slipped under the leg of her shorts and a moment later found their goal.
She was already wet, straining. She moved against his hands, and he parted her, finding the spot he knew would send her over the edge. He wasted no time, pushing her hard for the first one. He entered her with his fingers and she shuddered in his arms as the climax came over her.
He held her against him, limp, waiting for her to catch her breath. A moment later, her wits coming back to her, she felt his arousal hard and heavy against her back. She reached behind her and grasped it the best she could, but it wasn’t enough. His hands were still on her, one breast still cupped, the other still buried within her. She pulled at them and in his surprise, he let go.
She turned, then and kissed him full on the mouth, working on his belt buckle, then button and finally she could feel him, skin to skin. He moved slightly, pulled his pants just a little out of the way so she could free him completely.
She grinned wickedly, then bent. Kakashi sucked in a sharp breath and his hands went to Sakura’s head when she took him in her mouth. His eyes widened, then shut as he bit down on a groan. All coherent thought was gone as she experimented, tasting, running her tongue along him, then taking him into her mouth again.
He couldn’t stand it. It was too much and he did not want to finish there. So she was surprised when he dragged her up along his body, yanked at her shorts so that they came down just enough. He pulled her into a straddle and thrust up into her in one single stroke.
“Kakashi, wait—” she tried. But he’d chosen that moment to loosen the zipper on her shirt and take one plump nipple into his mouth and her mind shut off to everything but him.
Then he was moving and she moved with him. Even with the odd place her shorts were, she matched him, thrust for thrust. He held her hips and pulled her down to meet him each time. Her eyes rolled back as the next orgasm ripped through her.
But he wasn’t done. Again, he tormented her breast, pumping himself into her with long, sure strokes and again he pulled another climax out of her. He moved his lips to the other breast, sucking until it hardened. She whimpered in the back of her throat, his hands squeezed, guiding her hips into the rhythm he wanted and there, she came again. Finally, when he couldn’t hold on any more, he thrust hard, pushing her off the edge once more before following her and emptying himself into her.
They lay, tangled, sweaty, breathless. His arms were wrapped around her, holding her to him. She buried her face in his chest, trying in vain to remember how to take air into her lungs. It had been… incredible.
And she hadn’t had time to protect them. Dammit.
He sensed when her mind came back, when she started thinking. He felt the slight shift in her breathing, the way her hands grabbed his shirt. “Sakura?”
She took a deep breath and sat up. He was still buried inside her and, incredibly, still hard. It took all her willpower, all her concentration to keep her head. “You surprised me. I didn’t have time.” She said.
She waited while it sunk in.
He’d never done that before. Never lost control like that. He didn’t think, he just felt. He needed her. He needed to be inside of her, needed to feel her surround him the way she did. He watched her close her eyes, watched her concentrate, but before she could do anything, he grabbed her hand.
“Sakura—” When she opened her eyes, puzzled, he said, “—wait. If…” He paused, then cleared his throat. “If it’s already happened will that…do anything?”
She considered the intent look in his eye, and she shook her head. He closed his eye a second—only a split second—but she saw it. The relief was there. She smiled, her lips spreading by the second. “No, it will only prevent it if it hasn’t happened yet.” She concentrated, sending her chakra to the key point, then opened her eyes again.
“Good.” He smiled and it was altogether wicked. “Now, we still have another half an hour or so…” he trailed off as his lips began wandering over her again.
