Nejislady: I’m so happy you’re still reading and
enjoying. I can’t wait for the movies
either. Now I just have to figure out what
they are going to see. :D
Mmartini: I’m glad you like emotion driven chapters and
interactions of my characters. It’d be
kind of pointless to write if people didn’t like that. :D
Alice: I like Pein, so I have to be nice to him…no matter
how much I want him to be “the bad guy”, I just can’t do it to him. :D
Sneakyfox: I may have to throw in a crazy 80s style pool
party just for you now. I hope to be
updating regularly now, so *crosses fingers* hopefully you’ll get the next
chapter after this one within two weeks. :D
Chapter Eleven
Shikamaru sighed and ran his hand over his face. He muttered, “Troublesome.” He looked over at Sasuke’s content face and
smiled. “You really need to talk to him,
you know? You need to tell your dad how
you feel. You need to tell him some of
the things you tell me and Kakashi. How
can he let go of the fact that you’re not Itachi if you never really talk to
him?”
Sasuke frowned. “I
know, but he always brings Itachi up and I just don’t know how to get around
that fact. He brings up my brother and I
either shut down or go mental on him.”
Shikamaru nodded.
“I’ve noticed. Look we’re going
to call him again and both of us are going to do it.” He smiled when Sasuke cracked an eye. “I’m going to sit right next to you and I’m
going to listen to the conversation too.
I won’t say anything, only help you get through it without fighting with
the father you do love despite what you want everyone else to think.”
Sasuke sighed, but nodded.
“Alright.” He pushed himself up. “Let’s do it then.”
They walked into the building and nodded at Kakashi before
stopping by the phone. Sasuke picked up
the phone and dialed the number before grabbing Shikamaru’s hand for
reassurance. Shikamaru smiled when
Sasuke turned the phone so they could both hear. “Hello,” Itachi’s voice drawled through the
line.
Sasuke took a deep breath.
“I’d like to speak with father please, Itachi.”
Itachi chuckled.
“Sasuke, how good to hear your voice.
Have you figured out a way to escape that stupid institution they put
you in? I laugh every day because I’m at
home living the good life and you’re stuck in a mental ward.”
Shikamaru tightened his hand and sighed.
No wonder Sasuke had such a harsh view of himself if this was how Itachi
always talked to him. He kissed the top
of Sasuke’s head in support. Sasuke
glanced gratefully at Shikamaru before speaking again. “I want to deal with it, Itachi. Now please put father on the line.”
Itachi sighed. “Fine. He’s busy, but I’ll interrupt him for you
just because I love you so much, dear brother.”
Sasuke closed his eyes and tried to center himself before
his father got on the line. Shikamaru
kept the tight hold on his hand for which he was thankful. He exhaled deeply before his father answered,
“Yes, Sasuke?”
Sasuke closed his eyes and said, “I wanted to talk to you
for a while, but if you’re busy I can call back.”
Fugaku sighed and closed his eyes. He wasn’t aware things had deteriorated so
badly between him and his youngest son.
“Sasuke, I’m never too busy to speak with you.”
Sasuke opened his eyes and stared at the buttons of the
phone. “I don’t like the way I last
spoke with you. I wanted to apologize
for that first.”
Fugaku smiled softly.
“Thank you for the apology.
Perhaps I owe you one as well. I
just get to the point where I am not sure how to handle you.”
Sasuke nodded and took comfort in Shikamaru’s hand. “I have problems. I know that now. I’ve been making progress with my therapist,
and with the help of my friends.” He
paused, unsure if he should mention Gaara at this point, and opting not
to. “I wanted to ask for permission from
you to go out with my friend’s family again.”
Fugaku sighed. “I’ll
allow it if you will allow your mother and I to take you out as well. I don’t know if you believe me, but we miss
having you around. You are our son and
we love you very much.”
Sasuke swallowed and tried to push his emotions down. “Okay.”
He sniffled for a second. “I love
you, too. Give my love to mother.”
Fugaku smiled. “I
will Sasuke. I will arrange our visit
with Kakashi and let him know you may go out with the Nara’s again. Goodbye, Sasuke.”
Sasuke nodded.
“Goodbye, Father.”
He hung up the phone and pulled Shikamaru up. Shikamaru said nothing. He knew Sasuke was going to their tree. When they were situated comfortably with
Sasuke’s head in Shikamaru’s lap and Shikamaru’s fingers running through
Sasuke’s hair, Sasuke spoke. “I don’t
know how to have your family.”
Shikamaru frowned and shrugged. “Your family is different from ours, but I
believe the love is there just as strongly.
I think you just cover it up while my family tries to keep our love at
the top of all the other shit.”
Sasuke frowned. “How
does a person do that though? I’ve never
had a “normal” emotionally stable family.
I know they love me, even Itachi in his own sick, twisted way. How do I go from that to what’s considered
“normal”?”
Shikamaru smiled and shrugged. “You’ll probably never be normal by societal
standards. I fail to see what that
matters. You’ve already gained two
additional families just by being in here.”
He smirked and pulled Sasuke’s hair just a bit. “You’ve got my family, which will never let
you leave.”
Sasuke snorted. “That
implies that I’d ever want to leave your family.” He tilted his head to the side to look at
Shikamaru. “When we’re out you’re
joining my band, right?” He
smirked. “You’re part of my family too, even
if you’ve never had the misfortune of meeting my family.”
Shikamaru shook his head.
“I’d like to get to that point someday.
I love you like a brother. I
always wanted a sister or brother, but my mom just couldn’t chance another
pregnancy. I’m glad I’ve gotten you.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes.
“And I think I’ve gotten a sister you sentimental twit.”
Shikamaru chuckled and rolled his eyes. “It’s just about time to meet Gaara for the
day. How are the two of you doing?”
Sasuke blushed. “Well. I love talking to him, and somehow I even
like his friend, Naruto.”
Shikamaru nodded. He
knew full well that Naruto could be a handful with all his energy, but he also
knew that nothing except Sasuke made Gaara smile like Naruto. “Glad you can stand him, because I gotta be
honest. If it came down to you or
blondie, I think if it didn’t kill him to make the choice, he’d pick blondie.”
Sasuke sighed. “I
know. I don’t fault him for that
though. Especially with his condition, I
think it’s important that he has something stable. If it came down to us, I would want him to
choose the thing that would be best for him and in this case, I think it’s
Naruto.”
Shikamaru smiled and nudged his shoulder. “Luckily it seems there won’t come a point
when he has to choose because you two get along well enough.”
Sasuke smiled and nodded. He stood up and
brushed off, “Come on. Let’s go visit
him. Then we can figure out how to get
you to talk to Chouji about your feelings.”
Shikamaru blushed and murmured, “Troublesome.”
Sasuke laughed and shook his head. “Come on.”
He held his hand out and helped pull Shikamaru from the ground. “I miss my boyfriend.”
Sasuke was still holding Shikamaru’s hand when they made it
to the medium-risk floor. Kakashi shook
his head, but smiled as he motioned them through to the common room. “I’ll be back in a little over an hour for
the two of you.”
Sasuke saw Gaara sitting by the chess board and smiled
softly. He dropped Shika’s hand as he
wrapped his arms around his boyfriend’s shoulders. “Hey,” he whispered.
Gaara smiled and leaned his head back for a soft, chaste
kiss from his boyfriend. “I thought we
could just watch some TV today. I’m not
particularly in the mood for chess after my session today. I really don’t want to do anything other than
pretend I’m normal.”
Sasuke smiled sadly and glanced at Shikamaru who
shrugged. He sat down on the couch after
Gaara glared the other occupants away.
Sasuke laid down with his head in Shikamaru’s lap and held his arm up
for Gaara to curl in next to him. When
they both had their heads in Shikamaru’s lap, he turned the TV on to a rerun of
Saturday Night Live before gently massaging both heads. Sasuke gently ran his fingertips across
Gaara’s side.
After 15 minutes, Sasuke sighed and kissed the back of Gaara’s head. “You want to talk about it at all? I won’t force you, but you might feel better
if you do.”
Gaara chuckled dryly.
“I doubt it. I had to speak of my
father’s death.”
Sasuke bit his lip uncertainly. Gaara always avoided the issue of his family,
but this was something he really wanted to know. “I’ll be here when you want to talk about it,
but I hope you know that I won’t ever judge you.”
Gaara’s lips twitched a bit at the corner. “I know, Sasuke. I’m just not ready to speak of it. I hope you won’t think poorly of me.”
Sasuke shook his head.
“No matter what, I could never think poorly of you.” He smiled and kissed the back of his
boyfriend’s head. “You don’t have to
talk to me now. You don’t have to talk
to Shika now, but you know we will both be here for you anytime you want one of
us.”
Gaara nodded and closed his eyes. He concentrated on the feeling of Shikamaru’s
hand in his hair and Sasuke hand gently rubbing his sides. Before long he had fallen into a content
slumber. It really was a miracle
considering his insomnia, but with both of these boys together holding him, he
knew he was safe and felt he could sleep.
Sasuke sighed and kissed Gaara’s ear again. It was time for them to leave and Gaara had
slept through most of their hour, not that he’d ever deny his love his much
needed sleep. He nudged Gaara carefully,
knowing he could set off an episode if he woke his boyfriend too quickly. “Get up, Gaara. I have to go back down now.”
Gaara groaned and stretched a moment. “I’m sorry I slept through our hour.” He sat up and snuggled into Sasuke’s
outstretched arms.
Sasuke shook his head.
“Never be sorry for something you need, alright?” He smiled and kissed Gaara chastely one last
time before standing up and pulling Shikamaru up behind him. “We’ll be up tomorrow and we can play some chess
or whatever you like.” He smiled and
hugged Gaara tightly before turning around.
“Maybe tomorrow I’ll finally beat you at chess.”
Gaara nodded and watched as Sasuke and Shikamaru left the
floor with Kakashi. He took a deep
breath and moved to the floor nurse.
“May I call my family, please?”
The nurse nodded and unlocked the phone. “You’ll have 15 minutes like always,
Gaara.” She smiled at him and went back
to her station.
Gaara dialed his sister’s number and waited for her to
answer. “Hello?”
Gaara smiled. “Hi,
Temari. How are you doing?”
Temari shrugged.
“I’ve had better days, but it’s improving now that you’re talking to
me.” She sighed. “How about you?”
Gaara sighed. “I had a tough
session. We talked about dad’s death.”
Temari inhaled sharply. “Do you want me
to grab Kankuro or Naruto and come visit?”
Gaara swiped at a stray tear. “Yeah.
I think I need the company today.
Maybe all three of you could come?”
Temari smiled softly.
“Yeah. We’ll be there in about
half an hour. Especially if we have to
wait for Naruto to get ready.”
**********
Kakashi rubbed his forehead.
“I know you want to know about your son’s condition, Mr. Uchiha, but all
I can tell you is that I suspect he may have a dissociative personality
disorder. I’m not comfortable placing a
more specific label on his disease until I have spoken to him more.”
Fugaku sighed. “I’m
just worried about him. Is he going to
experience a snap like Itachi went through?
I don’t think I could handle that with another one of my children.”
Kakashi twirled the phone cord. “It’s hard to tell what’s going to happen
with people with dissociative personalities.
He may live a perfectly normal life.
The help he is going to get here combined with the right environmental
support could mean he’ll never need medication.” He sighed and pinched the bridge of his
nose. “I can’t tell you what’s going to
happen because a lot of it depends on you and a lot on which specific label I
determine fits Sasuke’s disease.”
Fugaku frowned.
“Thank you for being honest, Hatake.”
He paused. “I want to schedule a
visit with Sasuke. I spoke with him
already and he’s promised to try. My
wife will be with me as well.”
Kakashi pulled his feet down from his desk where he had been
resting then and looked at his calendar.
“Do you want a mediated meeting with a counselor present, or would you
like a more informal meeting where all staff stay outside the meeting room?”
Fugaku pondered the possibilities for a moment. “I think I’d like to try once more for an
informal meeting. If this attempt fails,
I suppose we’ll have to start meeting with a third party present.” He sighed.
“Sasuke also asked me if he could go out with that family of his friend
again. I have no qualms about it.”
Kakashi nodded.
“Thank you, Mr. Uchiha. It really
has seemed to be beneficial to Sasuke’s progress.” He scanned the calendar. “I believe Sasuke is free for your meeting
any day this week after 3. All of his
scheduled activities take place before then.”
Fugaku consulted his own calendar. “Both my wife and I are free on Wednesday at
4:30, if we could have that time.”
Kakashi penciled the meeting into the calendar. “Of course, Mr. Uchiha. May I offer a piece of advice where Sasuke is
concerned?”
Fugaku exhaled slowly.
He really didn’t want anyone else telling him how to deal with his son
because that meant that he didn’t know his son as well as a stranger. Still, if it was conducive to his meeting
going well he knew he should listen. “Of
course, Hatake.”
“Sasuke hates feeling like the past tense of Itachi. I don’t presume to know about your home life,
as Sasuke skirts that issue most frequently.
Still, I know that he doesn’t believe you know anything about his
personality, and simply see what Itachi used to be. If he brings up the subject of Itachi it may
be prudent to mention that Itachi is Itachi and has no bearing on your
perception of Sasuke.”
Fugaku frowned. “I
thought he knew that I don’t think he’s Itachi.
I simply wanted him to be aware that conditions like these run in the
family and to be prepared that it could happen to him if he didn’t find healthy
outlets for his emotions.”
Kakashi dropped his head to the desk. “I know.
I’ve got to go now, Mr. Uchiha, but if you would like to come a few
minutes early to speak with me before your meeting with Sasuke, I’d be more
than happy to make the time for you.”
Fugaku nodded. “Yes,
Mr. Hatake. I would like that. Thank you for your time. I will see you Wednesday.”
Kakashi listened as the other side of the line went
dead. He really needed to speak with the
Uchihas. If they spoke like that with
Sasuke it was no wonder he truly believed they only thought of him as a past
tense of Itachi. He wondered if Fugaku
had ever been able to speak with Sasuke without mentioning Itachi. He knew that Fugaku only wanted what was best
for his sons, both of them, but like most parents with troubled children he was
going about it in very much the wrong way.
By mentioning the mistakes Itachi made he was implying that Sasuke would
definitely be making the same mistakes.
There was a knock at his door. “Come in.”
Sasuke came in and sighed.
“You are such a liar. You said
the CD you gave me was the first album you bought.”
Kakashi chuckled. “I
was testing your knowledge. You are
absolutely right it’s not the first album I bought. It’s actually the most recent, and I only
have it on CD. I have all the other
Buzzcocks album on vinyl though.”
Sasuke snorted. “It
doesn’t matter much. I loved the disc
either way.” He sighed. “I never told you I have a band, did I?”
Kakashi shook his head.
“Do they know where you are?”
Sasuke smirked and shook his head.
“Yes. They think when I get out the
fact that I’ve ‘done time’ in a ‘mental house’ will bring our band more
followers.” He sighed and smiled. “I really think of them as family, you know? I try to protect them from my family by never
letting the two groups interact.”
Kakashi sighed and folded his hands on his desk. “Sasuke, I just finished making an
appointment with your father for Wednesday.
He’s asked that there not be a mediator, and I did try to give him some
tips for dealing with your situation.
The problem is in whether or not he listens to me.” He sighed and smiled sadly at Sasuke. “As you know, I have come to think of myself
as something more like a brother to you than a therapist. It’s a line we’re not supposed to cross, but
somehow I just can’t help myself.”
Sasuke nodded and smiled. “I know,
Kakashi.” He sighed and put his thumb to
his mouth, nibbling on the nail as he thought.
“I want to have a good relationship with my father. What advice can you give me on how to deal
with him?”
Kakashi smiled. “Well, when he starts
talking about Itachi calmly remind him that you are not Itachi. It also might not hurt to tell him you know
he’s just looking out for your best interest, but he may be better able to do
so by recognizing you are your own person.
Then steer the conversation into something of your choosing.”
Sasuke smiled.
“Thanks, Kakashi.” He sighed and
stretched before standing. “I’m going to
go curl up with Shikamaru and take a nap.”
He chuckled softly. “It’s funny
how tiring it is holding Gaara while he’s sleeping.”
Kakashi shook his head.
“Don’t forget that you have your meeting on Wednesday and when the
Nara’s next speak to me we’ll set up your movie. I’ll let you know once I find
out when.”
Sasuke nodded and found his friend already perched against
their tree. He crawled into place and
closed his eyes, falling asleep almost immediately.
