Chapter Ten
“She says she’s whose daughter?”
Kankuro glanced at the little girl, seeing that she had already found something to do while they talked. “She says she’s Uzumaki Naruto’s daughter.” Kankuro said as he looked at his brother again. “Her name’s Mahina.”
Naruto had a daughter? Gaara was silent as he looked at the little girl, seeing that she was wearing Naruto’s familiar orange jacket. The little girl clearly was familiar with how office life worked since she was successfully keeping busy and not bothering them. “Would you like something to drink, Mahina?” Gaara questioned.
Mahina looked up at Gaara, startling him with how clear blue her eyes were. “Yes, please.” Mahina said softly. “Thank you, Lord Kazekage.”
“Kankuro, can you get it for her? I’d like to ask her a couple of questions.”
Kankuro nodded slightly before leaving the office, pausing long enough to lightly mess the little girl’s hair up. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back in a few.” Kankuro said with a smile.
Gaara waited until the door was closed before asking, “Where are your real parents?”
“They died, then Daddy found me and said that I’m his now.” Mahina answered.
“Where did they find you?”
Fear flickered in the little girl’s eyes, her thumb immediately going to her mouth. “In Owochimawu’s hideouth.” Mahina answered, keeping her thumb fixed firmly in her mouth.
Orochimaru’s hideout? What in the hell had the snake been doing with a child? “How did Naruto stumble across there?” Gaara asked gently.
“They wash looking fow Shashuke.” Mahina answered. “Then they foun’ me.”
Gaara was silent as he left his desk, kneeling in front of the little girl. Careful as not to frighten her, the redhead gently made the little girl remove her thumb. “Did Naruto adopt you,” questioned the redhead.
“He said that I’m his daughter forever.”
Why was he not surprised that Naruto would do something like that? Of course, it had been a very serious decision so he must have thought about it for a while. If that was the case, then why hadn’t he been told about Mahina’s existence?
Of course, they were still afraid that Orochimaru would find out where the girl was. Since they were still afraid, no one would know about Mahina unless they went to Konoha and Naruto introduced them to her. “Well, how about I write to Naruto and let him know that you’re here? That way, he can come and get you in about a week or so.” Gaara suggested.
“A week?”
“It takes three days to get from Konoha to Suna and vise versa. It’ll probably take a day or so for the message to get to and back.” Gaara explained.
Mahina looked thoughtful for a moment before nodding. She smiled brightly when Kankuro came back with the little girl’s drink. “Thank you.” Mahina said happily.
“When she’s done and I have the letter written, I want it taken up to be delivered. Then we’ll need to take Mahina to the house so she can have a bath.”
Shopping with a little girl in tow had to be an experience that Gaara was in no hurry to have again. While he was grateful that the child at least knew the size of clothes she wore (all of the clothes looked to be the same size to him), he found it surprising how quickly she found the clothes that she liked. “How about we buy three outfits for you right now and then you can go shopping with my sister later?” Gaara questioned.
Mahina looked thoughtful before nodding. “Daddy does that too. He has me go with one of his friends or Uncle Kiba’s sister if I need clothes.” Mahina said before taking the three top outfits she liked. “I got an orange dress at home. Auntie Sakura nearly screamed when she saw that I wanted an orange dress.”
Truth be told, Gaara knew he probably would have too. While the girl’s hair color was right for orange, he would have screamed if he saw that same retina searing orange. So far, Naruto was the only one that he knew that willingly wore that horrid color.
With the outfits paid for, the redhead left the store with the little girl happily humming. “Mahina, is this the first time since you’ve been found by Naruto that you’ve been outside the village?” Gaara questioned.
“Umm… Does being caught by the bad people count?” Mahina questioned.
“Bad people?”
“Uh huh. The ones that took me from my room when I was sleeping. There was a shark man and one that had eyes like Sasuke gets when he’s mad. Then there was a man that had metal in his face and another one that had a mask. There was this blonde haired man too that looked like a girl and there was a lady there. She was okay, but she was with the bad people.”
Temari’s reaction to the little girl was somewhat amusing. While Gaara and Kankuro could honestly say that they had never seen their sister acting feminine when it had nothing to do with a mission, they were torn between laughing and running away screaming. Watching the woman that even scared the hell out of Gaara with a mere glare start cooing over a little girl was probably even scarier than anything they had ever witnessed. “Geez, she’s filthy! You couldn’t have brought her home first before dragging her through the store?!” Temari scolded as she looked Mahina over. “Come on, sweetie, let’s get you in the bath and we’ll wash up that jacket. Do you have anything under it?”
“My jammies and undies.”
“Okay, we’ll even wash up your jammies and undies. Then once we get you cleaned up and everything, we’ll go back to the market and buy you more stuff.” Temari said as she took the jacket off of the little girl.
Mahina grabbed at the jacket, holding it close to her. “I don’t want Daddy’s jacket washed. It still smells like him inside it, see?”
While Temari couldn’t truly smell Naruto’s scent, she figured that the little girl was simply clinging to some hope that she’d have some kind of connection to Naruto. “Yeah, but we want your Daddy to see even his jacket cleaned up. Don’t you?” Temari questioned.
Mahina rocked softly as she looked at Temari before looking at Gaara and Kankuro. “Can I take a bath with one of them? Sometimes Daddy lets me.” Mahina said innocently.
“No, but you can take a bath with Temari.” Gaara said quickly.
Mahina looked at Temari for a moment before kissing Naruto’s jacket. “Okay. Can I have bubbles?” Mahina questioned as Temari led her to the bathroom.
“Sure, sweetie. Whatever you want.”
Tsunade was silent as she took another drink of her sake, staring at the search reports. Ever since Naruto had sent a report stating that the little girl had been set free and was probably running the countryside searching for a way home, Tsunade had been searching for any clues as to where the little girl could have gone.
She looked up when she saw Shizune standing with a scroll in one hand. “Lady Tsunade, this came from Suna.” Shizune said as she gave the older woman the scroll.
Tsunade opened the scroll, reading quickly. Her eyes brightened with happiness when she read Gaara’s message. “Have one of the Hunter-nin find Naruto and tell him that Mahina’s been found!” Tsunade said with a smile.
“She’s been found? Where?”
“Near the Wind Country’s boarder. Kankuro, Lord Kazekage’s brother, found her and brought her to Suna for medical treatment and to rest.”
Shizune breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the little girl was safe. “Right away, Lady Hokage.” Shizune said with a small bow before she hurried out of the room.
Still relieved, Tsunade grabbed a scroll and began writing a reply as well as some tips that were known to calm the little girl down, putting the tips in order from most likely to work to least likely. As soon as she was done, she took the scroll to be delivered.
“You can’t catch me!”
Temari skidded across the floor as she tried to catch the little girl. One minute she had been sitting in the tub, happily playing with the bubbles and then the next, she was running out of the bathroom and around the house. “Don’t just stand there!” Temari shouted at her brothers. “Help me catch her!”
Mahina laughed as she ran, sliding under the kitchen table before scrambling to her feet and running towards the bedrooms. She liked this game, it was always fun. A squeal of excitement left her lips as she barely avoided getting caught in sand and heard Temari yell at Gaara about using sand in the house.
Her laughter fell silent when she ran into one of the bedrooms, staring wide-eyed at the various puppets she saw hanging on a wall. Some of the puppets were half done while others were complete. “Wow…” Mahina said softly, her eyes focused on the puppets.
A surprised cry left her lips as someone picked her up, her eyes widening in either fear or surprise. There was a pained grunt as the person that grabbed her was thrown out of the room while Mahina landed on the floor. She spun around and started crying when she saw that it was Kankuro. “What happened?” Temari questioned as she and Gaara ran to their brother’s side.
“I have no clue. One minute I’m holding on to her and then the next, I’m flying out of the room.” Kankuro said as he rubbed the back of his head. “Hey, Mahina, it’s okay. Come here.”
Mahina kept crying as she ran into the hallway, wrapping her arms around Kankuro’s neck. “I’m sorry!” Mahina sobbed. “I didn’t know it was you!”
“It’s okay.” Kankuro said gently. “Hush, little one, it’s okay.”
Slowly the little girl began to calm down, clearly still exhausted from the day’s events. “Can you get up without waking her?” Temari questioned.
Kankuro eyed the little girl warily for a moment before shaking his head. “Doubt it,” he answered. “She’s not like Naruto. You can’t move her and expect her to stay dead asleep.”
That was true. One time Naruto had stayed, the blonde had fallen asleep after training and nothing short blowing up the surrounding area woke him up. Then again, an explosion was useless when it came to waking the loud blonde up.
Gaara was silent as he carefully took the little girl in his arms, stiffening slightly when she inhaled sharply before nestling against him. Without saying a word, the red-head took the little girl upstairs and waited while Temari dressed her in a skirt and a white tank top. “Don’t worry, Gaara, she’s probably been locked up somewhere and having that bath probably helped make her feel better.” Temari said with a smile.
For a moment, Gaara considered telling his sister that it wasn’t the child’s amount of energy that concerned him. It was how the traces of Shukaku’s energy that still resided in him reacted when she was nearby.
Just what was she?
Pein was silent as he looked at the surviving members of the Akatsuki, his rage barely contained. “Answer me this,” he said with a dangerously calm voice. “How could a six year old brat be able to sneak past all of you and escape?!”
Nobody answered, each fearing for their lives. “That’s an interesting question,” Deidara commented. “Itachi, don’t you have any suggestions? The brat insisted on staring at you the longest.”
Itachi stared at the blonde haired man for a moment before answering, “The child is able to manipulate demons to her will. Perhaps residing with the Kyuubi’s Jinchuuriki has had a number of effects upon the child’s overall developmental abilities.”
“Explain.” Pein ordered.
“With each contact that we’ve had with the Kyuubi, the Jinchuuriki himself is adept at escaping. Whether or not that is the Kyuubi’s influence, it’s difficult to determine. Due to the fact that the child is -needless to say- a child and very influential, it’s possible that she had subconsciously picked up the Kyuubi’s traits.”
Now that they thought about it, it was possible. Anywhere that had traces of demonic energy, the child usually was discovered. If she had prolonged contact with the Kyuubi or its container, then there was a chance that she had indeed picked up the same tricks that the demon fox had used over the centuries and its container used occasionally to escape danger.
Pein frowned, knowing that the child hadn’t escaped on her own. “If I discover that any of you helped her, willingly or not, then heads will roll.” Pein warned. “You’re dismissed.”
Without saying anything, the other members left the large room leaving behind a furious
Pein. One of them had helped her escape, he just needed to determine which one.
