Author’s Note – My goodness, it’s been a while since I worked on this one. I apologize for the amount of time it’s taken to get a new chapter written and updated. Real life and health issues have killed any motivation for writing. I’m on a working urge right now and am trying to take advantage of it.
Disclaimer – I do not own “Naruto” nor do I make money from the story.Chapter Eleven – Plans and Lesson PlansKakashi had been rather amused when he’d discovered that the Anbu commander had decided he would watch the boys instead of asking one of the other members of the elite shinobi corps. He had a feeling the man would be in trouble when it was discovered that he’d taken the job without asking if anyone else had wanted it first. He would have to let Iruka know so they could be alert to the fall out that would happen once the news got out since watching Anbu with their drama could be highly entertaining! The Hatake had also discussed his concerns with the Anbu head medic regarding the emotional damage done to his new sons, and the man had agreed that something had to be done soon to help them work through it. An appointment had been scheduled for the boys with a Yamanaka Anbu that was on the medic’s staff, and the woman had come as highly recommended by the head medic. All in all, it made Kakashi feel better to know that they would try to make some headway in helping the boys.He hummed to himself as he headed towards a shop that sold children’s clothing. Before leaving home, he’d taken note of the boy’s sizes and had wanted to get them items that were free of their former clan seal. The two boys needed a fresh start, and the Copy Nin was going to ensure they had it.One conversation he’d had with Iruka had been about rooming, and they had decided to allow the two to share a room for a few months until Sasuke had adapted to his new surroundings and parents. After talking it over with Itachi, the six year old had been agreeable to that so they were putting off decorating the two rooms until the boys were ready to separate. This way they could make an adventure of making both rooms special and help the three year old transition to his own room.Kakashi picked up clothing, books, and toys for both Itachi and Sasuke. He was determined the oldest boy would be able to have the childhood he deserved, and they would make sure he remembered how to play. There was time for training, but it wouldn’t be the only thing Itachi would do in his free time. Before heading home, he picked up a special treat for Naruto so his little sunshine wouldn’t feel left out and also stopped to make dinner reservations for the next night. The restaurant chosen was one Iruka had mentioned wanting to try but hadn’t had the opportunity to do so. Their first date would be the perfect time to enjoy the restaurant.By the time he got home, Kakashi found that both of the three year olds were laying down for a nap and Itachi was sitting near Iruka while the older male read to the boy. He knew that Itachi’s reading skills were fairly high for his age, but Iruka had insisted on this special time so the two could spend quality time together. Kakashi had gotten into the habit of doing the same with Naruto and would this with the other two as well. The love of the written word was something both young men enjoyed and wanted to gift to the boys.He lowered his mask, setting the bags of clothing into the laundry room, and the Jonin removed the tags before putting the clothing in to wash. Once that was handled, he headed into the living room and picked up a book, listening to the two as Itachi occasionally asked questions about the story Iruka was reading. From what he could tell, it seemed the pair were reading a story that relied heavily on an actual historical event. Kakashi remembered reading this at Itachi’s age and loving it, and he approved of Iruka’s choice. It was good to hear the child getting interested in the tale, knowing he was acting his age and not the adult the Uchiha clan had tried to force him into becoming so early. The trio read for a while before the silver haired male got up, setting up a snack for all three boys as he’d heard both Naruto and Sasuke stirring. Once done, he headed into the room that Itachi shared with his brother and spotted the little boy rubbing his eyes.“Hello, Moonbeam,” he said softly, gently stroking the child’s back. “Did you sleep well?”Sasuke nodded, rubbing his eyes harder and giving a yawn as he did so. He gave a shy smile to the man, allowing himself to be picked up.Kakashi easily carried him on his hip, letting the warm weight of the boy cuddle into his arms as he carried him out of the room. Iruka had come up with the nickname fairly quickly after the child’s hair had turned to silver with the streaks of ebony in it, and the Jonin found that it worked for the boy.As the pair came out of the room, he found Iruka doing the same with a drowsy looking Naruto, who had his head on the man’s shoulder.“We have a pair of sleepyheads,” the Chunin joked softly as they headed towards the dining room. “It won’t last long,” Kakashi predicted, knowing how quickly Naruto’s energy level perked up after he was woken in the morning or after nap time. “I dare say we’ll have our hands full with all three this afternoon.”“They did well on chakra control this morning,” the long haired male commented. “Physical endurance or do you have other ideas?”“Endurance for a while and then we’ll see about working the younger two on stances while I see about training Itachi on a better taijutsu style for him,” the clan hand answered quietly. “It’ll give them a chance to burn off some of this energy before we put them back on bookwork.”“Agreed,” Iruka replied, placing a gentle hand on Itachi’s shoulder before putting Naruto down in his seat. “Thank you for helping me get this set up, Itachi-kun.”“You’re welcome,” the boy said quietly, taking his own seat while Kakashi set his brother next to him.The children enjoyed their snack, perking up fairly quickly once the food hit their systems. It didn’t take too long before Naruto was chattering to his brothers, and Sasuke seemed to open up a bit more to the slightly younger boy. They’d hoped he would considering how open the blond was with those in his family, and it looked as if Itachi was starting to take the blond to heart too. After the snack was consumed, the two adults guided the children outside and opened up a game of chase to help build endurance. It was also a good chance for the kids to work on reflexes too so they could avoid being tagged as well as trying to catch their targets.Kakashi and Iruka had worked on finding fun ways to incorporate shinobi basics, and they felt their time brainstorming had paid off as the boys laughed and chased each other around the training yard. It was good hearing the oldest boy have fun, and it didn’t take long before the Chunin and Jonin joined in on the game. The adults would occasionally capture a child, tickle them for a moment before setting them off to run again.Once Kakashi noticed the energy had been toned down and showing signs of the strain from the exercise, he called a halt to the game and sent the younger two to Iruka while taking Itachi aside.“I noticed you’re not finding the taijutsu you’ve been learning one you’re comfortable with,” he told his son, who nodded. “I’m going to teach you a different style and see how you do with it. We may have to change it up as you grow, but we’ll make sure you have something that you can be comfortable with and use well as you advance in your shinobi career.”“It would be good to get rid of the last of my former family too,” the child answered, being honest with his new father.“That’s another reason I wanted to do this,” Kakashi confirmed. “Your doujutsu works differently now and that style wouldn’t work with it. Given you and Sasuke are showing signs of the build and height potential, I’m going to train you both in the Hatake family style. All right then, shall we get started?”The pair worked together with Kakashi showing him the beginning stances and helping him each time he called out a stance, making minute adjustments to the boy’s posture and positioning. It didn’t take long for Itachi to learn each one, reproducing every stance when his father called out the name of them.Out of the corner of his eye, the silver haired male could see Iruka gently guiding the boys into a series of stances. Both of the children were focused on what the Chunin was saying, and Kakashi frowned as he watched the pair move. Something told him that Naruto would be inheriting Minato-sensei’s body style, which was a built more for power than the Hatake clan’s slender build for speed, and that would he would need to find a different style over what Sasuke and Itachi would need to lean. This meant he would have to pull out his sensei’s scrolls on the style of taijutsu he’d developed and start learning it enough to be able to instruct Naruto in the style. He might have Iruka focus on it too so he’d be able to continue with the boy’s training while he was busy or on a mission.Kakashi suppressed the urge to sigh, pushing himself to focus on the task at hand, and helped Itachi learn a few more stances before letting the children have some playtime together. He summoned some of his dogs, knowing all three of them enjoyed spending time with the pack.Once the children were occupied, the Jonin leaned against the training post and was joined by the other adult. Iruka had noticed his moment of distraction earlier and was hoping that nothing was wrong; it wasn’t normal for the silver haired male.“Are you all right,” Iruka asked, sounding worried.“I realized something earlier,” Kakashi said softly, watching the children play. Sasuke and Naruto had ganged up with the dogs to tackle Itachi to wrestle with him, and he could see the older boy relax as he tried to fend off the horde.“What did you realize,” the Chunin asked, smiling when he spotted the sight of the children.“Sasuke and Itachi show a lot of the Hatake traits regarding height and build,” the slightly older male replied. “Even as young as they are, I can see a lot of myself at their ages in their physical form. The Hatake taijutsu, which I started Itachi on today, will work perfectly for them. The problem is our sunshine.”“He’s taking after his other father in that, isn’t he?”“He is,” he said with a wistful smile. “Minato-sensei was built for power, and it showed in everything he did. Naru-chan picked up some of my coloring and intelligence, but he looks a lot like sensei and we’ll have to adapt his training to reflect that.”“Do you have something we can start him on,” Iruka asked. “I do,” he replied. “It’s the style Minato-sensei created to use when he got frustrated with a style Jiraiya-sama had tried to teach him. I don’t know anything about it personally except for the fact that it can be rather frustrating at times. I never thought to learn because it just doesn’t match what my body is capable of. He wasn’t as tall or slender as I am so I kept his taijutsu scrolls out of the way for the moment since Naru-chan isn’t ready for any of the scrolls he made over the years.”“I don’t remember much of him; I never had the opportunity to meet him outside of mission reports with my Genin team as a child,” Iruka commented. “I do remember being in awe every time we picked up a new mission or reported in on one we completed. He always had a kind word for us, asking how our training was going.”“That was just how sensei was,” Kakashi said softly, eyes soft as he thought about his former teacher. “He was one of the kindest people I knew and could be unpredictable at times. It was always a challenge when I sparred against him, which he loved to do. He always loved to tease me when I’d try to come up with ways to counter against his taijutsu style; I never got the opportunity to really come up with the proper defense for it.”Iruka was quiet for a long moment, thinking about what Kakashi had told him and what would be best for the children.“Do you think I could use the taijutsu Yondaime-sama created effectively?”That surprised the Jonin, who turned to look at his friend. He hadn’t expected the other to ask that, and it forced him to look at the young man with a gaze that was more critical than usual. Before now, he’d often admired the compact frame with a slightly hormonal approach or focused on working with him to hone his own skills while aiding the Chunin in developing more jutsu and tactics to advance as he was hoping to do. Now that he was thinking a bit more critically, he could see a similarity between Iruka and Minato-sensei regarding build and knew the answer to the question that had been asked.“I think you could use it very effectively,” Kakashi replied. “You’re built for power instead of speed, just as he was, and the taijutsu would be something you might find to be better suited to you than the one you currently use now.”“I was thinking of learning the style to help Naru-chan,” the darker skinned male admitted. “I hadn’t thought of using it on missions but if it does suit me, I may work to master it alongside Naru-chan. This way I can focus on him while you work with the other two boys on your clan style taijutsu with them.”“That would be a huge help,” Kakashi answered. “You get ready, I’ll go through light spars with you at first so you can test everything out. If you’ll get the pups settled for their reading lessons, I’ll pull the first scroll out for you.”“Sounds good,” he told him, heading to call the boys to go inside. Iruka felt happy to know he’d be able to help Kakashi out a bit more and hoped he’d be able to pick up on this new style. It was a bit daunting to know he’d be learning the Yondaime’s personal taijutsu, but it would be great to have something to do more bonding with Naru-chan over.Author’s End Note – I hope that everyone enjoyed the chapter; I do apologize for how long it took to get this done.
