Chapter 11: Whispers
Neji preformed the hand seals
over and over again, making sure all the series were correct. He was knelt on a
stone table doing the seals to practice while Sir Leader was walking around him,
observing.
While doing the series of
jutsus, Neji was remembering the notes of the scrolls Sir Leader gave to him as
well the information from his “classes” with him. The information was incredible,
and a lot of his questions about Naruto and Gaara were answered with this. Neji
kept his thoughts about the whole situation to himself. Afterall, he was not to
give his opinion on the matter.
Out of nine bijuus, five were
elemental. Those five demons could be considered as more dangerous because of
their elemental powers and therefore, the Akatsuki used a different amount of
power to restrain them.
“That’s enough, Neji” said Sir
Leader, standing in front of the young man.
It has been a year since he
come to the Akatsuki and six months since his training under Sir Leader’s orders
had started. The young shinobi had learned a lot from Sir Leader, Itachi and the
Akatsuki. He was part of the organization and he was one of Sir Leader’s chess
pieces. He was The Link.
“I have a mission for you,
Neji…” said the Leader. Neji was standing up and his gaze travelled to his
leader, watching him. He was almost unsure if he had heard right “Tobi will be
your partner. I’ll give you two the details when he arrives” Normally, Neji was
not sent on missions if not as Itachi’s subordinate, so he was actually a little
surprised with the command.
Tobi arrived with his usual
cheerful mode and saluted to Neji, who nodded in greeting. The masked man then
bowed a little to the Leader and waited for him to talk. Neji moved from his
part on the stone table to stand besides Tobi.
“You two are going to perform
an investigation” he said tossing a scroll to them. Tobi caught it with clumsy
moves “Your respective mentors know about this mission of course” the Leader
said , in a "as a matter of fact" tone “You shall report to Sasori for this
mission. He will stay near but you are the ones to infiltrate the village” Sir
Leader closed his eyes “Read the scroll, pack and go; we don’t have all the time
in the world”
The leader waved is hand and
moved to sit on the chair in front of his desk as Tobi took Neji’s hand and
dragged him out of the room. Neji saw the Leader from the corner of his eye
before closing the door.
Sir Leader had a smirk of
satisfaction on his face. That, for some reason, almost sent a shiver down
Neji’s spine.
Tobi opened the scroll. He
seemed happy that he was being given a mission. Neji could tell, because the
other shinobi was humming happily while walking besides him. Silver-white orbs
looked at the scroll as Tobi began to read it.
“What does it say, Tobi?”
“We have to collect
information” Tobi said and handed the scroll to Neji. He took it and read more
carefully.
The mission was, indeed, to
collect information. More precisely, information about the current Jinchuuriki
of the One Tailed Bijuu Shukaku whose host was Sabaku no Gaara.
“This sould be most
interesting. I’ll get ready immediately. I bet Sasori-san is already prepared so
we have to be too!” announced Tobi showing the victory sign with his right hand.
“Yes, we have to report…” Neji
said watching the scroll with plain eyes “And head off to Suna”

Neji covered his face with a
dark grey mask with the pattern of black eyes and the mark of a black X on the
button. By doing this he could hide his byakugan eyes in case somebody saw him.
He looked over at Sasori. The puppeteer master was inside his scorpion like
puppet and ready to go. Tobi wave at him to indicate he was ready too.
They ran from side to side of
the hallway, going pass the genjutsu covering the entrance and into the
forelands outside the Akatsuki hideout.
They ran at top speed. Neji
occasionally turn his eyes from the way they were going to the landscape. It has
been a long time since the last occasion he had been out and the view of the now
so different scenery was something that caught Neji’s attention.
They only stop twice in their
run and they reached Sunagakure at night. Sasori was sitting on his scorpion-like
puppet, watching the two younger shinobis at his charge. The puppet master
sighed.
“In a few days is going to be
the ceremony to announce the Godaime Kazekage…” He said and looked over his
shoulder to the direction that leads to the hidden village “And we have to
confirm the rumors of who is going to be” Sasori looked at them again “Tobi, I
want you to collect information from the Elders and council of Suna. Neji, you
have to watch the Jinchuuriki of the Ichibi no Bijuu, since he is candidate for
being the fifth Kazekage”
Neji’s narrowed his eyes
behind his mask. Gaara was candidate for being the next Kazekage? Then again, if
Naruto could affirm that he was going to be Hokage one day, maybe the fact that
Gaara was candidate for Kazekage was not something difficult to believe.
Tobi nodded in approval of the
instructions and Neji did the same. Sasori waved his hand, saying that they
could go and so they did. Both ran through the dessert, approaching the hiding
village in the Sand. Neji used his byakugan to count the guards at the entrance
of the village. They could pass them if they were careful.
“I’ll take another route, Neji.
I’ll meet again tonight with Sasori-san to report” said Tobi without looking at
his partner.
“Hai” Tobi jumped and
disappear from Neji’s sight. The Hyuuga kept his pace and reaced the entrance of
the village.
Neji stopped away enough to
not be seen by the guards. He closed his eyes behind his mask and formed a hand
seal while whispering the location of a place Sasori told him. Once done he made
the rest of the hand seals and disappeared in a cloud of white smoke.
They young shinobi appeared
inside an old house. It looked like if none had touched a single thing of it in
years. The layers of sand and dust were everywhere. The sheets covering the
furniture that once were grey now looked like a dusty deep grey. On the floor
were old broken toys and little puppets. The wind moved the curtains as if it
was crying; Neji watched the place, feeling the unfamiliar atmosphere of
melancholy.
This used to be the house of
Sasori of the red sand. The place was like frozen in time. In the corners of the
room were little pools of sand and other things. Neji walked around the place,
just thinking. After a moment he dismissed his thoughts about Sasori and his
past and walked to a chair near a table in what he supposed was the kitchen.
Neji used his byakugan to look
around the place. It was deserted. After make sure that he was safe to walk
around the zone without being seen he went out and into the streets of
Sunagakure.

Gaara touched his gourd with
his fingertips as after placing the object on the floor against the wall. He
left it there and walked over the swings of the lonely play ground. In the
pocket of his belt was a scroll, confirming what he had suspected weeks ago.
He was going to be the Godaime
Kazekage.
He wished to protect his
country and its people, to earn their trust and maybe, just maybe, have subjects
who appreciated him. He was not a demon. The creature within him was not his
ruler and surely not a reason why he should give up to the demon’s cries for
blood.
Not anymore.
He had change so much that
past year. He understood more about people and even more about himself. He was
glad that his siblings cared for him. They loved him and he was grateful of that.
They forgave him and they had started over. Now the could be that family that
the three of them so much needed.
But his work was far from
done. He had the power of a demon inside him and the blessing of his mother
within the sand that was always with him. Now he knew, his mother never hated
him. After slowly getting used to be with his siblings more, he got the courage
to ask Temari and Kankuro about their mother. Even if his elder sister was not
very sure about her decision, she told him about their mother.
Her name was Karura, and she
had confessed to Temari that she will never hate her baby, that it was his
egoist father and the dark hearts of the village, the ones that had hurt her.
But Karura believed in the future and the heart of her children. She told Temari
that she was always going to be with them, within the wind and sand. That she
knew that some day, they will change the village for good.
Those words made Gaara believe
in himself even more, and with that on his mind, he was going to make his
mother's and his own wish come true. He was going to be a great Kazekage and
change Sunagakure for good.
He knew that it was not going
to be easy, but he was not going to take back his words, just like a certain
blonde friend of his showed him once.
Now he was alone, deep in his
thoughts, calming the nagging voice in the back of his head. It was when he
reached a considerable state of peace that he noticed the presence of an
unfamiliar shinobi. He moved his hand in one single motion and a few kilometers
away from him, the shinobi was caught in a sand shell.
“No killer intent. But this
turmoil is very strong…” Gaara stood up and walked to retrieve his things and
then go to the prison shell he had created.
--* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - *-- --* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - -
* - - - *--
Neji never expected to be
noticed, much less to have sand rising from under his feet and form a solid
prison around him. He was still using his byakugan so he could see in the dark
of the shell. He started to wonder what had gone wrong. He was considerably away
from Gaara and no other person was near him. He had made a miscalculation, but
he couldn’t tell what.
Gaara was approaching to his
direction. The young shinobi took a kunai from his pouch and tried to cut the
sand but his efforts prove to be useless when the weapon break at the third
strike. When the sand started to move again and enclose around his wrist and
ankles, Neji started to feel worried. Not because Gaara of the sand was the one
attacking him but because he couldn’t fail the mission, not after hearing the
Leader’s warning…
The sand prison started to
crumble around him but the sand bonds were still restraining him. Once the sand
of the prison was gone, he was face to face with Gaara. The red haired boy had
his arms fold against his chest and was looking at him with a calm expression.
“What do you want?” asked
Gaara. Neji had not moved an inch. Instead, he was gathering chakra and
preparing to fight if it was necessary. Gaara sighed and moved close to him to
reach for his mask. Neji moved but the sand kept him in place.
The mask fell to the sandy
floor almost without a sound, the wind was whispering as the bounds restraining
Neji became lose and the sand started to fall, freeing the Hyuuga. Gaara was not
letting the boy go because he knew he was from Konoha. He knew he was one of the
shinobi that Naruto cared for. He had noticed that he was not wearing a hitai-ate
and that on his left arm was a armband with an unfamiliar symbol. He knew that
he may be a treat to him and yet he let him go. The reason was that he could
see something in the young man eye’s that made him do it. It was a strange
yet familiar feeling.
“What happened to you?” asked
Gaara. Neji looked back into those aquamarine eyes as they blinked in confusion.
Neji narrowed his eyes and backed off. He took his mask and put it on again.
“I don’t know what you are
talking about” he said. Gaara just nodded.
“I’m Gaara of the desert and I
know you are, or used to be, a Konoha Shinobi. But I don’t care about the past.
Tell me your name”
Neji looked at the future
Kazegake. The young shinobi had attitude and skill. Yet his personality was so
dense that Neji almost could see it around the other teen like an aura.
“…Neji” He wasn’t sure of why
he answered, of why he did not just run and return to inform Sasori of the
incident. He did not know what drove him to follow Gaara into the village when
the other teen asked him to do it.
He just did it.
--* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - *-- --* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - -
* - - - *--
Sasori looked over his
shoulder to see Neji and Tobi running into his direction. The older shinobi was
sat on his puppet, waiting for the teens to come back.
“So?” he asked with a bored
expression.
“I was watching the Ichibi no
Bijuu. He received a confirmation today” confirmed Neji.
“The elders are going to give
him the title of Godaime Kazekage in two days” reported Tobi “The ceremony will
be at noon according to the plans set up by the council”
“His siblings will be the ones
primarily protecting him” said Neji. Since he was wearing the mask, Sasori could
not see his eyes. The boy was looked at the floor and behind the mask his face
was grim.
“Well, we have to stay for the
ceremony and wait. The Leader will send someone with instructions. Let’s just
watch the Ichibi for now” Sasori commanded. He smiled lazily and lay down on his
puppet.
Neji sat down near the big
scorpion-like-puppet and closed his eyes. He and Gaara had had an interesting
conversation that day. He hadn’t particularly known Gaara at the time the sand
nin had attacked Konoha, but he could tell that the sand shinobi was very
different now:
Gaara sat on the swing and
pushed his feet against the ground to move a little. Neji sat in the swing next
to him and watched the Jinchuuriki curiously.
“Is hard, isn’t it?” Gaara
said. Neji didn’t know what to say since he did not know of what he was talking
about “Being lost. Is hard, isn’t it?”
Neji moved his head and
pushed himself to move the swing a little. The wind was singing. This was
something strange of Suna. The wind seemed to sing all the time. The melody of
that afternoon was a nostalgic one.
“Yes” Neji said “But I
chose to be this way”
“Can I ask why?”
“Someone important to me
needed me to make this sacrifice”
They stayed in silence for
a long time, just moving on the swings and listening to the wind sing as the sun
started to set. Gaara looked over his shoulder at the teen next to him.
“Tell me what you need”
“Just some information”
Neji answered “It’s true that you are going to be the next Kazekage?”
“Yes” Gaara closed his eyes
for a moment, and then saw the other teen again “But you are not here because of
that, aren’t you?” Neji confirmed this with a nod “Could be about Shukaku?”
Neji looked at him over his
shoulder; Gaara had a tiny smile on his face and was rocking slowly on the swing
looking at the sunset. He looked calm; Neji could see a feeling of serenity in
him.
“I’m sorry” was all Neji
could say.
“Do you really want to do
this?” Gaara closed his eyes and rocked faster on the swing.
“No”
“Then you don’t have to be
sorry” the red haired boy rocked faster on the swing. Neji watched him without
knowing what to do for a moment.
“Aren’t you going to fight
me?” asked Neji while standing up, Gaara looked over him without stopping the
swing and shook his head.
“You are not attacking me
nor my village, I learned from a…friend... yes, a friend... that attacking
people without a reason was not something that should be done” Gaara closed his
eyes “I don’t know your reasons to fight. I have no idea why you have come here
and maybe I cannot understand it either. But if that reason you have is strong
enough to serve the purpose of you coming here against your own beliefs, then I
can’t question you about it”
“You don’t know a thing
about me” Neji narrowed his eyes behind the mask.
“True” Gaara opened his
eyes “But I know very well that feeling of being lost that you reflect in your
eyes” the sand shinobi smirked “You know nothing about me, either”
Neji was about to leave
when Gaara’s hand reached his wrist and stopped him. Neji looked over his
shoulder, Gaara’s eyes were closed and his face was serene, showing a tiny smile
while the wind moved his hair softly.
“If your motives to betray
you own beliefs are that strong, then your way may not be that incorrect, don’t
you think?” Neji just stared at him. Gaara opened his eyes, looking to what he
supposed were Neji’s behind the mask “That person should be very important. Is
this the way you show love?”
“I’m not sure...” Neji
sighed as Gaara let go of him “Maybe it is, or I’m becoming just too selfless”
he murmured to himself. Gaara narrowed his eyes.
Neji ran away from him,
Gaara looked into the sky as the once Left shinobi gradually disappeared into
the horizon. He kept his gaze on him until he couldn’t see the teen anymore.
Gaara folded his arms against his chest and looked into the sky.
“Selfless, hum?” Gaara
smiled a little “Must be a really strong motive”
The wind blew hard and the
sand on the desert rose with it. Neji’s tiny tail became lose and his dark locks
flew around him as he watched the night sky. The teen was thinking about Gaara’s
words. Gaara had asked him if his actions were the way he showed love and he
wasn’t sure. Neji shifted on the ground and brought his knees close to his chest,
resting his arms on them.
‘What if I told you that I
do care for you, Sasuke?’ Neji smiled bitterly ‘Will you laugh in my face,
telling me that what we had was long time ago and it does not matter anymore?’
The boy closed his eyes, listening to the wind’s song ‘Will you ever
forgive me?’ Neji smirked at his own naivety ‘Still, I don’t want you to
die’

“Hey, Gaara” the boy in
question lifted his eyes to encounter with his sister’s “It’s getting late.
Let’s go back home”
He got up and walked besides
Temari then both head off to their house in the village. Gaara was thinking
about his encounter with Neji. He was curious about his actions and why he had
taken those deceptions, whatever they may be.
“Temari” he called. His sister
looked at him with a tiny smile.
“Yes?”
“If you had to do something
that goes against your believes for someone you care about, would you do it?”
the eldest of the sand siblings blinked in confusion “I mean, to save that
person from something”
“Well, even if it would hurt
me I’d do it. For example, I’d do something that I believe wrong to save you”
She stopped and touched Gaara’s forehead with his own while smiling “Because I
love you, Outoto”
“Thanks” he said with a tiny
smile “But you are my sister. What about a person dear to you but is not part of
your family, like Shikamaru?”
Temari blushed and almost
tripped while stepping back, Gaara blinked in confusion since he was not sure if
he had said something wrong. Temari, still blushed, folded her arms and closed
his eyes, thinking.
“Well, that’s a bit more
complicated Gaara” he looked at her brother, who was just staring at with a
puzzle expression, Temari sighed “You see, the love of a couple is complicated,
when you had realized that you really love that person with all
your heart you may do anything to protect him or her, but when anything
comes to be something very hard, is a very difficult decision…”
Gaara nodded “I think I
understand…”
“Why are you asking this,
anyway?” Temari smirked “Are you in love, Outoto?”
“No” he said while starting to
walk again “But I meet someone who is”
--* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - * - - - *-- --* - - - * - - - * - - - * - - -
* - - - *--
Sasuke opened his eyes and
looked around. He was on his bed, the candle light long gone and the silence
around him. It felt like if someone was calling him, he looked around and found
nothing.
He got up and exited the room,
walking the large halls without a chosen destination; he just felt the need of
going out of his room and kept his pace until he reached the outsides of the
hideout.
In a clear
part of the dark woods covered by the dense fog he found Orochimaru. The Snake
Sannin was playing with a ring and watching the cloudy night sky as the wind
blew non stopping.
“Ha, Sasuke-kun”
He said. He turned his gaze to the boy “I had heard some very interesting rumors
lately” Sasuke stayed still and emotionless, just watching the Sannin.
Orochimaru open his palm, letting Sasuke see the ring.
It was a
silver ring with “Kuu” on it. Sasuke blinked, not understanding at first, then
something rang in his memory. That ring was almost identical to Itachi’s; the
kanji on it was the difference.
“Those
rings have a meaning, don’t they?” He asked, walking towards Orochimaru. The
sannin smirked and nodded.
“Indeed
they do, Sasuke-kun” he confirmed “These rings are owned by the ten main members
of Akatsuki” he began to explain while playing with the ring between his fingers
again “They are not only for decoration but for a strong propose closely linked
to their goal” Orochimaru tossed the ring into the air and caught again “And
they can connect their user to the main force of one of the Akatsuki’s most
relevant tools” The sannin opened his hand as showed Sasuke the ring “The Link”
“What’s
that?” asked the boy still with his plain and not very emotional voice.
Orochimaru chuckled and looked him in the eye.
“I think
the real question is ‘Who is that?’ That sounds more fitting”
Sasuke’s
eyes narrowed and then went wide in realization. He tried to reach for the ring
but Orochimaru closed his hand and pocketed it. The young Uchiha glared at him.
Orochimaru continued smirking in return.
“What do
you know?” asked Sasuke, getting himself composed again.
“I know
that a Hyuuga named Neji is the so called Link. I also know what that means. I
have a lot of information you need, Sasuke-kun, and I’ll give it to you.
I just ask you for get your lover at your training. Be a loyal servent of mine
and I’ll help you to achieve your goals, as I promise”
Orochimaru was giving Sasuke
another incentive. After a deep research he got some more information of the
Akatsuki. That cost him the life of some of his minions and a raise in the
threat of the Akatsuki, but in the end his suspicions were confirmed and now he
could deal with Sasuke more easily.
When he was in the Akatsuki,
the Leader had mentioned once or twice something about The Link, but was not
until Itachi informed him about a high prospect for the position that Sir Leader
looked satisfied and decided to attend other matters for a while.
The sannin watched as Sasuke
just nodded and head back to the hideout. Orochimaru placed a hand over his
pocked and smirked. He was glad that he kept the Kuuchin ring; it was going to
be more useful that he thought.
To be continue…

Authoress Notes:
That’s right! I got Gaara in
the picture, my evil –cough- I mean master plans are going nice and soon I’ll be
in the part I was waiting to make since like…lots of chapter ago, jajaja. Anyway,
I hope you liked this chapter, was more about feelings and some information,
plus Gaara’s introduction into the story.
- Orochimaru’s ring: the
translation of Kuu is “Sky” both the complete word for the ring is “Kuuchin”
witch is “void”, the information I found about it gave it the meaning of Aether
(also spelled ether) the word aether in Homeric Greek means "pure, fresh air" or
"clear sky".
