Part 10: Endgame
105: Control
Sasuke Uchiha had called him Madara. The pretence was over. In a perverse, bizarre way it was a relief. He no longer had to behave like Izuna. He could be himself.
He wanted to do two things. He wanted to fuck Yukie Fujikaze and he wanted to kill Sasuke Uchiha.
Fucking the woman could wait.
He charged. Sasuke Uchiha dodged. Madara compensated for the missed blow; slowing, ducking and turning for a second attack.
Sasuke Uchiha’s foot passed so close to his head that he felt the breeze it generated.
It was not the type of warning Madara ignored.
Madara danced out of range and considered his options.
They were much the same height, so there would be little difference between their reach. Sasuke might be stronger, possibly slower, but the differences would be marginal. Physically they were well matched and Madara guessed they were both as skilled as training could make them. Then there was terrain; neither of them would be as familiar with fighting on grass rather than a flat metal floor. Both would try to use the trees and the bushes.
Finally there were the bystanders. Sasuke Uchiha cared if they lived or died while Madara did not. That was an advantage he could exploit.
Sasuke attacked. He was impressively fast. Better still, he had drawn his knife. The point sliced through Madara’s jacket and pricked his skin. They both retreated. Madara knew it had been close. If Sasuke’s reach had been longer, his lunge more reckless or Madara’s retreat slower, the knife would have gone in under his ribs. Madara had no doubt that Sasuke would have followed it in, ramming the point into his heart.
Madara smiled as he drew his knife from its scabbard.
Against all his expectations, Sasuke Uchiha was proving to be a worthy opponent.
Haru had listened to Shi-chan and Neji-san trying to persuade Papa not to go into the public side of the park or at least to wait for a radio. He had heard Papa’s order to Sumaru-san and then the sound of the lock breaking.
Now he was watching the dots that represented Papa and Sumaru-san blurring as they got further from the microphone at the gate and Sai was less sure of their position. Even so, Haru saw them separate, with the blob that represented Sumaru-san moving more quickly.
That was really bad. Haru wanted to shout at Sumaru-san that his job was to protect Papa.
Over the speaker he could hear Shi-chan and Neji-san alternating between arguing what to do and issuing orders. Iruka-sensei was manning the control room. Hoshi was distributing radios. Haku-san was depositing equipment where the elite fighters could pick it up on their way to the park.
“Sai, can you show where Izuna-sama and Kimimaro are?” Haru asked.
“I am working on it. I have the microphone at the gate and the three microphones at the site of the initial altercation. There are fewer sensors in the public side of the park and those are about monitoring the plants and their environment rather than people.” There was a pause. “I do not want to give erroneous conclusions that you and Shika-san will use when making decisions.”
“Best guess?” Haru pleaded.
“Based on the data from the microphones, Kimimaro and Sumaru-san are fighting.”
Which meant no one was protecting Papa. Haru suddenly knew what he had to do. Whatever happened, To-chan would never forgive them if one of them didn’t.He warned Sai he would be gone for a bit, unplugged his interface and ran from Rin-san’s office, heading for To-chan’s tank. As he did so, he almost collided with Rin-san, who must have finished the DNA harvesting procedure.
Haru did not stop. “We have to get To-chan out of the tank,” he yelled.
Rin-san grabbed at him, missed and followed. “Don’t be ridiculous, Haru.”
“I’m not. Papa and Sumaru-san went into the park to stop Kimimaro hurting people. Now Sumaru-san and Kimimaro are fighting and that leaves Papa unprotected. He’s with Madara Uchiha, Rin-san. All the elite fighters are on their way there but none of them are going to get there in time.”
He entered the side room where To-chan was with Rin-san just behind him. Haru stopped by the tank before turning to face Rin-san and looking her directly in the eyes.
“Probably To-chan won’t get there in time either, but he needs to try.”
Rin-san was motionless for a moment but then she nodded. “You get everything he is going to need to a position where he can pick them up. I’ll do the rest.”Haru dived for one of the socket covers in the floor, intending to plug in.
“Not that one, Haru,” Rin-san told him walking over to a cabinet and inputting a combination to unlock it. “Use one of the ones on the wall.”
Haru resisted the urge to ask why and did what he was told. A few moments later he understood.
Rin-san dropped the side of the tank, as you did when the tank was empty. For a moment the gel looked like it might stay where it was before it started to slip downwards. It splattered onto the floor, where it started to liquefy and spread out.
He watched Rin-san press a hypospray to To-chan’s neck.
Haru pulled his attention away what Rin-san was doing and plugged in. He would try Sai first. If that didn’t work, he would have to use the intercom.“Sai, get me anyone who isn’t Shi-chan, Neji-san, or already running to the gate.”
There was a brief pause before someone answered. “This is Haku.”
“This is Haru. To-chan will be on his way to the gate. He needs his tags, his knife and a radio.” He looked towards the tank. “And maybe some clothes.”
They stood some seven paces apart watching each other. Sasuke had no intention of initiating another attack. He had known that Madara would underestimate him and he had pressed that advantage. Now it was gone.
Madara was wary; prepared. He looked... ...happy, as if there was nothing he would prefer to be doing than facing his opponent, knife-to-knife, in a fight to the death.
There were many things Sasuke would prefer to be doing and he intended to survive to do them. He would keep Madara busy until reinforcements arrived. It might be Sumaru after he had disposed of Kimimaro, or another of the elite fighters, or a member of the USF with a laser pistol.
Sasuke did not care which.
Madara moved right. Sasuke stepped back, turned slightly to meet the anticipated attack but did not commit. It was a feint; Madara closed from the left. Sasuke spun around to avoid the blow and saw Madara retreating, only for him to be there, too close, by the time they were back face-to-face.Sasuke twisted and Madara’s blade sliced down his thigh.
He ignored the shock and the pain. His body automatically took him backwards, out of range; one of the moves drilled into him since before he could remember.
He could feel his nanobots responding; controlling the bleeding and dulling the pain.
Madara’s thrust had been aimed at his femoral artery. If it had hit home, he would be bleeding out; not even nanobots could plug an arterial bleed.
He had to be more careful: more willing to retreat; less worried about giving ground. Every second’s delay was a tiny victory.
The next two exchanges were better. Madara attacked, he retreated.“You disappoint me, Sasuke Uchiha,” Madara admitted once they were seven paces apart again. “For a moment there I thought that you were willing to fight.”
Sasuke did not reply. As Kakashi-sensei said, words were merely a distraction; the best fighters neither spoke nor listened. Of course, Kakashi’s fights never lasted long enough for conversation.
“Perhaps it is time to increase the stakes,” Madara announced and moved away.
For a moment Sasuke was confused. If Madara expected him to follow, he had no intention of doing so. Then Yukie Fujikaze darted out of some bushes, flushed out by Madara’s approach. Why she had hidden there was beyond him; she should have kept running, putting as much distance as she could between her and Madara.
Even now, despite Sasuke calling her name, she made the wrong choice. Instead of running away from Madara and towards him, she ran sideways; away from both of them.
Madara was two steps ahead of him. Even so, Sasuke pursued, hoping to get an attack in as Madara subdued her. As he grabbed her Sasuke lunged forward, only to pull back as Madara swung her around to act as a shield.“Back away,” Madara ordered, pressing his knife to her throat.
Sasuke obeyed. Where were the USF personnel? Probably still at their posts. He knew that very little time had passed; during combat every second seemed stretched.
“We’re heading for the gate to the private section of the park,” Madara told him. “Unless you follow me, I shall kill her.”
So Madara was also anticipating the arrival of Sumaru or the USF guards.
Whatever Madara had whispered in Yukie Fujikaze’s ear it had been effective; she made no move to resist him. Sasuke followed.Five more paces and the microphone at the gate should be able to pick up his voice: four; three; two; one. “Let her go, Madara. Leave her on this side of the gate.”
“Not a chance. I only wish it were one of your children.”
Sasuke’s rage surged. He tried to stay above it. The adrenalin did not help.
Madara smiled. “Maybe the little blond one. Or Hoshi. Yes, Hoshi-chan. She is old enough to be interesting.”
To illustrate his point he moved his left hand from Yukie Fujikaze’s waist to her breast and gave it a squeeze.
The mere thought of Madara’s hands on his daughter was enough to make Sasuke want to kill him then and there. Instead he took a couple of deep breaths and watched Madara back through the open gate, keeping Yukie Fujikaze in front of him.How he wished one of his people could be lurking there with a laser pistol, or even a club. Unfortunately it was not the case.
“Come through,” Madara ordered. “Bolt the gate but do not lock it.”
Sasuke closed the gate and shot the bolts into their housings.
They continued some fifty paces further. Then Madara struck Yukie Fujikaze on the temple with the hilt of his knife. He let her unconscious body slip from his grip onto the ground. “Now we fight. Or feel free to run away.” Madara nudged the senseless body with his foot. “I prefer my victims conscious but I would make an exception this time.” He smiled. “That was the plan. Trap you all in the system at the end of the string. Kill everyone other than Hoshi-chan. Wait until her fourteenth birth anniversary and then give her the one present no virgin ever forgets.” He thrust his hips forward and made lewd gestures with his knife.
Sasuke’s control snapped. Rage burst from his core, blazed through his being and burst from his mouth in a roar.
He charged.
Too many parts of Shikamaru’s mind were telling him what an idiot he had been. He could have kept Yukie Fujikaze too busy for her to engineer a confrontation with Izuna. He could have spoken to the media companies, warning them not to go with her suggestion of a live broadcast. He could have created crises that Izuna had to deal with so that he postponed his scheduled interview.
After Sasuke’s rampage the day before, the entire periphery of the household should have been locked down. They should have insisted that Kakashi stayed close to him. Someone, maybe Kisame, should have spoken to Sumaru and explained that there were times when he had to disobey.
None of the hindsight and second-guessing was helpful now. Shikamaru thrust it away, burying it deep or partitioning it away. All that mattered now was that Sasuke was on the wrong side of the gate, where Madara was, and that Sumaru was too busy dealing with Kimimaro to protect him.
At least Sai and Haru had managed to give him some idea of what was going on. He imagined what it would have been like without them; all he would have was the feed from the microphone at the gate.Instead he knew that Sumaru was fighting Kimimaro. He knew that the USF personnel were armed and mobilised. He knew that teams were on their way from the medico school to the park.
Also, Sai was doing everything he could to speed the progress of Kakashi and the other elite fighters. Pumps and locks had been cycled as quickly as possible; safety margins pared down to the absolute minimum.
None of it was enough.
Maybe, just maybe, Sasuke would do the sensible thing and stay away from Madara until reinforcements arrived.
His eye was caught by a change in the diagram Sai was generating. The blue blob, representing Sasuke, had reappeared. It was approaching the gate, contracting into a spot as Sai pinpointed his location. There was no sign of Sumaru’s purple.Neji opened one of the radio channels. “This is Neji. Hoshi, leave any radios you have in the vicinity of the gate and return to the household. I repeat. Leave any radios you have in the vicinity of the gate and return to the household.”
Shikamaru picked up the green spot that represented Hoshi. It was, as Neji had realised, still close to the gate.
“This is Hoshi. I am moving away from the gate. I have three radios. I am leaving one at the gate and the other two at ten pace intervals.”
“This is Neji. Acknowledged.”
Shikamaru was about to voice his approval when he was interrupted by Sai’s voice in his earpiece. “Shika-san?”“Yes, Sai-kun,” he subvocalised.
“Sasuke-sama and two other people are approaching the gate between the two parts of the park.”
Two other blobs appeared on the diagram, so close that they overlapped.
“I am integrating the output from the gate microphone and the three radios Hoshi-kun has deposited,” Sai continued. “I shall put it through to one of the speakers.”
“Thank you, Sai-kun,” Shikamaru acknowledged before updating Neji.
The two of them waited. Finally Sasuke’s voice came over the speaker.“Let her go, Madara. Leave her on this side of the gate.”
So he was with Madara and Madara had a hostage.
“Not a chance. I only wish it were one of your children. Maybe the little blond one. Or Hoshi. Yes, Hoshi-chan. She is old enough to be interesting.”
It was Izuna, or rather Madara, and he was taunting Sasuke. Shikamaru swallowed. Sasuke was not at his most rational where his children were concerned.
“Come through. Bolt the gate but do not lock it.”
Of course Madara did not know that the lock was broken. There was the sound of the gate closing and the bolts being slid into place.
Neji punched the intercom button. “This is Neji. Sasuke-sama is on this side of the gate between the two halves of the park. Madara is with him. Sumaru is not. Madara has a hostage. The gate is bolted on this side so Sumaru will not be able to rejoin Sasuke-sama and no USF personnel will be able to assist.” He began repeating the message.
According to Sai’s diagram, the elite fighters were finally mobile. However none were travelling at the rate of a gold spot, which was moving through the household.“Who is the gold?” Shikamaru subvocalised.
“That is Naruto-san,” Sai replied. “I have opened all the doors for him.”
Na-chan was out of the tank? Shikamaru grabbed a radio and was moving toward the door, ignoring Neji’s demands as to where he was going.
Shikamaru ran down the corridor, around a corner and down some stairs, heading for the park. He ran as fast as he could: hoping to spot Naruto; wanting to be there in case Na-chan needed him.Turning into the final stretch of corridor he caught a glimpse of Naruto’s back; he was coated in regen gel but otherwise naked. Even though he didn’t have the slightest chance of closing the gap, Shikamaru accelerated.
The double doors to the park were open. Standing some twenty paces beyond was Haku. As Naruto came through the entrance Haku launched whatever he was carrying into the air. It was a bag; Shikamaru could see the long loop of the strap as it rotated against the artificial sky.
Without breaking step, Naruto leapt, caught the bag and landed. Then was among the trees and Shikamaru lost sight of him.
Madara had wanted Sasuke Uchiha to lose his temper. What he had not anticipated was how vicious and effective Sasuke would be without it.
There was no time for thought; he was fighting for his life.
It was exhilarating, particularly as he was winning.
Sasuke closed again. He dodged Madara’s knife and, just in time, Madara saw a fist coming directly at his jaw. Jerking his head back, he saw Sasuke’s knuckles pass by, almost brushing his cheek. The unlanded blow left Sasuke with forward momentum. He stumbled forward and, for a split second, Madara could see his neck.
He snapped his knife arm forward but Sasuke had already reacted, bringing his chin down. The point of Madara’s knife sliced open his cheek and narrowly missed his eye.
Then they were apart again, facing each other, breathing heavily. Sasuke raised his left hand and fingered his cheek, assessing the damage.
As good as it was to see his opponent’s face disfigured, Madara would have much preferred to have cut his throat.
Madara spared a second to consider his own wounds. He could feel blood flowing down his left leg and reached down to investigate.A laser pierced the air where his head had been and struck a nearby tree. Madara scrambled for cover while following back the line of the shot.
He expected it to go a considerable distance and end in a laser rifle. Instead it ended much sooner at the laser pistol clutched in Hoshi Uchiha’s hands.
Madara was impressed. A laser pistol was only effective at short range and she had waited until she was close enough to use it. If he had not leaned down, she would have hit him in the head.Unfortunately for her, she was within range of his knife. It flew straight and true, turning point over hilt on its way to its target.
“Hoshi!” Sasuke Uchiha yelled.
She turned towards her father’s voice as the knife thudded home into her chest.
Madara set off before she finished falling, sprinting towards her with the intention of retrieving his knife or gaining control of the laser pistol.Behind him he heard Sasuke’s roar of fury. Madara had one chance; he had to be armed before Sasuke reached him.
The knife might be stuck. The laser pistol was the better choice. He dived for it. His outstretched hand closed on the grip as he converted his forward momentum into a roll that would bring him upright.
He made it as far as his knees, twisted, squeezed the trigger and kept it depressed.
The laser raked across Sasuke’s Uchiha’s torso from his left hip to his right shoulder. At such close range it vaporised clothing and seared through flesh; Madara could smell burning meat.
Even mortally injured, Sasuke completed the attack. Madara was knocked back and felt the knife glance off a rib, slicing through flesh but failing to penetrate.
Madara pushed the body away and stood up. He looked at the knife that had almost killed him. He thought it had looked familiar. It was Izuna’s knife.
He crouched down and picked it up. He would use it to make absolutely certain his opponent was dead; a knife thrust through each eye into the brain invariably worked. Then he would go and find Yukie Fujikaze.
Then he heard it; the growling. Something was coming at him. It was inhumanly fast.It burst out of the trees and leapt.
The last things Madara saw were golden fur, blue eyes and the long, white, pointed teeth that then closed on his throat.
