A/N: here’s another chapter in honor of NarutoxSakura week!A mad struggle for clothes, cleanliness and decency killed some desires but increased others. The urge to break something and the urge to tell her parents to take a long walk off a short pier. Yet that voice of reason prevailed and Sakura decided to go for the bathroom for a freshening up while Naruto settled for a quick rinse off in the available kitchen sink.
“Sasa, please come out and speak to us. You know we’ve had a devil of a time finding the place,” began her mother. Hearing this Naruto dove for his clean boxers and a pair of jeans. “Devil of a time? How hard is it to find an address? And you say men have no sense of direction?” came a father’s voice that Naruto recognized as Sakura’s father. “Kage bushin no jutsu,” Naruto chanted, forming a series of five clones. They rapidly scurried around straightening things up. Meibuki’s shrill voice snapped back, “I didn’t say that! I said WE have a devil of a time finding the place because you wouldn’t stop to ask for directions!” “But you were the one who insisted on coming here because you were worried sick! I tried to convince you not to but you wouldn’t give me a moment’s peace!” retorted the bass voice that was equally capable of piercing through doors. While they heard this, Naruto’s clones quickly grabbed for the air freshener and opened the windows and continued to scurry around the apartment tidying all signs of the tryst. Sakura poked her head from the bathroom, wearing a pair of his sweatpants and a large T shirt. He could see the drops of water still clinging to her skin that she tried to dry off. “Are they gonna stay there till we answer the door, Sakura chan?” Naruto whispered. If one wasn’t used to such intimacy they didn’t always consider the rich scents left in an enclosed room that weren’t trapped when outside. “What do you think? They’re my parents,” Sakura grumbled. Both of them winced hearing Meibuki almost scream, “What sort of a father doesn’t come after his daughter, mmm? Don’t deny you were furious!” “Do you think I’m not? I just didn’t want to cause a scene and we’d deal with it when she came back!!! But I’m not as impatient as SOME people,” thundered Kizashi. “Impatient! I’ll show you impatient, blossom head!” “Ouch,” Naruto whispered, seeing Sakura gritting her teeth. It seemed literally painful to her. From what he’d seen of Sakura’s parents, her father was normally very jovial, but hearing him yell was scary. “Shrew! If she heard you going on…” countered Sakura’s father. Naruto grabbed Sakura by the back of her shirt to stop her from tearing the door open. Silently he pleaded her and pushed in front of her to get to the front door and start undoing the locks. “Joker, if she saw how lightly you took things till it was too late…” Meibuki shouted in mid argument, only to hear the door creak open. Both parents stood opposite one another with their faces pressed together, fists at their sides and panting. “Good morning how are you dattebayo?” Naruto quickly interrupted. “Do you wanna come in since you’re here to see Sakura chan?” “My daughter had better be all right or else I’ll…” Kizashi threatened, shaking his fist. From the feel of his chakra gathering, Naruto sensed he was loaded for bear. Though Sakura had said he was a mere genin, he knew from his own experience that title meant nothing. Both he and Sasuke were technically genin but had far outstripped that distinction by their own abilities. “Don’t you dare make a further ass of yourself before I get in there and…” Meibuki gritted, grabbing him by the front of his shirt and dragging him aside. “Mom, dad, ENOUGH! Naruto doesn’t need you screaming like children in the hall of his apartment! You want him to get EVICTED?” Sakura shrilled, clapping her hands. “Kami, can you embarrass me anymore?” “Sakura!” Both parents chimed in together spinning to look at her furious face. “You worried us SICK!” “I wouldn’t have had to if you two didn’t argue all the time!” Sakura blurted out, words wavering. Glaring at her with frustrated eyes, her father stammered, “Now just a minute young lady, we should talk about this!” Meibuki rested her hands on her hips, scolding, “Sakura, you worried us sick! You’re coming home RIGHT this moment or else!” “I’m not a CHILD!” Sakura cried, turning and rushing back into the apartment. Naruto heard the door to the bathroom slam shut and lock. Both her parents focused glares on each other and on Naruto. “Excuse me!” Naruto said with a nervous smile. “Would you guys stop arguing and come in ok? It’s better inside here than in the hall… dattebayo.” “Humph,” Meibuki muttered, moving past Naruto who stepped aside quickly and into the main area. “Most sensible thing anyone’s suggested today,” Sakura’s father whispered back to him. Naruto closed the door behind him, and took a deep breath, glad that the sofa was clean from the effort of the clones. One of them had thrown a clean sheet over it to hide any possible stains. Baking soda worked wonders. Mebuki smoothed her dress under herself before sitting down on the sofa. Her husband attempted to sit next to her but she scooted down to put a discrete distance between them which made him rub his neck awkwardly. “Want any tea?” Naruto asked with a nervous chuckle. Folding arms over her chest, Meibuki huffed. “Tea at a time like this? Tell Sakura to get out of the bathroom this instant or I’ll get her myself!” “Dear, please. Let the man get us some tea, and let’s wait for Sasa to come out on her own,” suggested her husband nervously, seeing Naruto’s ear to ear disarming grin. Though both guessed for the sake of politeness he was putting it on as he rushed to the kitchen and started water to boil. Thanks to a grocery shopping trip he did have plenty of tea bags. “Sakura, get out here this instant! Your father and I are NOT leaving till we see you!” Meibuki called between cupped hands. “Go away!” Sakura called from inside the bathroom in muffled voice wracked with sobs. “Sakura chan, don’t worry, let me talk to them,” Naruto called back from the kitchen. Tense moments passed between the couple seated on the couch. Neither spoke to the other except in small whispers laced with frustration. Naruto caught them leaning their heads together by the time he came in with the pot of tea in one hand and two cups in his other. “Here you go…” he said handing them the mugs. “Thank you, young man,” said Kizashi, with a small smile that promised Naruto he was at least reverting to his jovial state, or was using it to launch a ‘speech’ with him. He could see the chilling gleam in his ‘future father in law’s eyes telling him NOT to let down his guard. “Thank you,” mumbled Meibuki. “I’ll get cream and sugar if you want them… and well…” Naruto offered, dashing off to get them. “I’m sure you’ve taken good care of our daughter since she’s stayed here?” Kizashi said. “And if anything’s happened you’ll take responsibility?” “Shhh!” hissed Meibuki. “Of course I would,” Naruto said as he came back out serious faced, carrying the milk carton, thankfully containing milk that WASN’T expired, and some packets of sugar. “So does that mean anything HAS happened to warrant you taking such responsibility? Because I would hate to have to step outside and show you a few of my own genin skills,” Kizashi chuckled with a creepy undertone of a very protective father. “There’s responsibility and responsibility,” said Meibuki. “That’s between Sakura chan and myself,” said Naruto calmly. “Then there WAS?” asked Meibuki, grabbing Kizashi by the back of his shirt as he tried to get up. Naruto waved his hands quickly in front of his face. “What I meant to say was that is between us, but I wouldn’t do anything that I couldn’t TAKE responsibility for with Sakura chan!” “For your sake I hope so, or else I’ll let him loose on you young man,” Meibuki said with an icy tone in her voice. “I love Sakura chan and I’ve loved her all my life. I wouldn’t let anything happen to her I couldn’t protect her from, and give my life for,” Naruto protested, sweat-dropping. “Well you can’t protect her from her parents. That’s not a genin’s job,” joked Kizashi. “Right?” “I invited you in here cause you were worried about her, right? And I mean I coulda told you to get lost, but you’re her PARENTS and you’re supposed to worry dattebayo?” Naruto blurted out, letting go of the sugar Meibuki took from him. She tore open both packets and dumped them into her tea before stirring it violently. “Humph, you are smart enough after all, despite what people say,” Meibuki said grudgingly, taking a sip. Her neck muscles were so tight Naruto could see the liquid gulped down. Kizashi sipped his tea after adding a good amount of milk. “If you hadn’t let us in, I think you’d have to find a new place to live, Naruto san. Not that this place isn’t charming in its own right but… any excuse to move wouldn’t hurt.” “Shush! This is a decent apartment for a genin’s salary and you know it dear! Now be quiet and let the young man explain himself!” growled Meibuki, glaring at him. “Oh man,” Naruto mumbled, feeling a nervous squirming in his gut. “Lemmie see if Sakura chan will come out or not… ok?” “You do that. Maybe your persuasion will work better than her own dear father’s, mmm?” Kizashi joked, with another undercurrent of ‘or else’. Nervously grinning Naruto rushed to the bathroom door and knocked on it. He could hear them whispering to each other in the other room, but couldn’t quite make out the words, showing how skilled they were with what Sakura called, ‘the parent’s whisper’. Softly knocking on the door he called, “Sakura chan please come out. They’re drinking tea now, so could you at least…” “No. I don’t WANT to come out till they apologize,” Sakura sniffled. “Well if they drink enough tea, one of ‘em will haveta use the bathroom and you don’t want me to get ‘em mad cause I wasn’t a good host right Sakura chan?” joked Naruto. “That’s right dear! You remember your father’s bladder doesn’t let tea stick around fast to pay the rent!” called Kizashi. “If you wouldn’t guzzle it down like a dying man in a desert you mean,” Meibuki added. Naruto couldn’t stop from chuckling at the kidding around. Kizashi chuckled loudly. “Though people waiting in line for the bathroom make up very interesting dance steps… like the one legged hop… I call that the one legged potty dance, and then there’s the backside pants clutch and the duck waddle…” “Honestly Kizashi!” Meibuki grumbled. “That’s hardly funny!” “You don’t want to see me out here making up funny dances do you Sakura chan?” Naruto giggled, knocking on the door. “Right? I mean you don’t want me to embarrass…” “They don’t need YOUR help embarrassing me,” Sakura grudgingly answered through the door. “I’ll come out, but only because you won’t stop trying to out-funny my dad.” To Naruto’s relief he heard the latch lock click, and the door creak open. Sakura’s green eyes red with tears peeked out through the widening gap. Naruto reached out his hand to her and gave her his best smile. He whispered, “It’ll be ok Sakura chan… trust me.” Taking a deep breath Sakura came out of the bathroom and took his outstretched hand. She led him walk her towards where both her parents sat on the sofa and mumbled, “Okay, I’m outside the bathroom now.” “Sakura chan, if you had an issue with how your parents were arguing, hiding away wasn’t the way to deal with it,” said Meibuki. “You want us to treat you like an adult, you could try acting like one,” Kizashi said. Biting her lip Sakura began to grit her teeth and fist her hands at her sides. “Sakura chan, it’s gonna be ok,” Naruto urged, squeezing her hand. Turning to the parents he said, “Look, I don’t mean to interrupt and all, but Sakura chan doesn’t like you two arguing and she wanted some space. So I let her stay because I care about her being happy. Is that so wrong? I’m her boyfriend and that’s all I want. To make her smile.” “But allowing her to isolate herself from her parents?” asked Meibuki. “I let you two in right? And you’re talking now, so it’s okay right?” Naruto said as he scratched his head. “I’m sorry I made you guys worry but she’s fine.” “Did you two act responsibly? Because I don’t want to have to…” began Kizashi. “Dad, STOP!” Sakura yelped, blushing fiercely. “You aren’t going to be blessing us with any grandchildren soon before you’re married are you?” asked Meibuki wagging her finger. “No! Of course not!” Sakura blurted out. “We’re too young for kids!” Naruto yelped. “But that’s later on I mean when we’re married I mean…” “Shut up, idiot,” Sakura growled and Naruto put a hand quickly over his mouth. Sighing she then mumbled, “Mom, Dad I’m sorry I made you worry by hiding here. I didn’t mean to disrespect you, but I was tired of hearing the arguing.” “Just because we argue doesn’t mean that you have to fix things, Sasa…” began her father. “The relationship between your father and me is our business. You should have come to us if you were upset by it. We would have listened and been more sensitive to that,” Meibuki said. A lump formed in Sakura’s throat and Naruto saw the tension loosen in her shoulders. She murmured, “That’s all I wanted Mom… Dad…” “See it’s all okay, right?” said Naruto. “I’m sorry if I made you two worry ok?” Kizashi stood up and walked over to Naruto with a frown on his face that became a smile. He held out his hand and took Naruto’s to shake it. As they did so he leaned and whispered in the boy’s ear, “And if you ever make my daughter unhappy I’ll hunt you down…” “R… right…” mumbled Naruto, faking a smile. While they had overcome one obstacle another had arisen. At least now her parents weren’t going to kill him, he hoped. As long as he did what was expected and did right by her. Plus Sakura’s smile at this moment made it all worthwhile. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
