CHAPTER 10
Iruka pulled out the map of the fortress and moved to the left toward the kitchen. He threw his summons nail beneath the refrigerator and grabbed a few supplies. He moved slowly and carefully stabbing another ninja with the hallucinogen as he slipped back outside the fortress. The dungeon would be locked. The seal master’s protection wouldn’t allow him to breach that, only to get back inside the fortress. He slunk around the building keeping to the shadows. He saw the opening to the tunnel Pakkun mentioned. The holes in the grate were large enough for a large rat or small dog, but nowhere near the size needed for a human; he would have to remove it. He reached inside his uniform and removed the cooking oil and butter knife he’d liberated from the kitchen. He made quick work of the cover; the oil lubricated the screws and bolts holding it in place and silenced any groaning. He put the screws into his pocket and crawled into the tunnel before pulling the grate back in place. He ignored the rats and quickly made his way down the passage. He pulled a mirror from his pocket to check the room. Pakkun had mentioned Kakashi’s visitor so he wasn’t sure if Kakashi was in the room or alone. He oiled his hands then reached through grate and lubricated the other side. It took a while but eventually the screws for that cover were loosened. He swiveled the mirror several degrees before settling on a lump in the far corner and rushing to Kakashi. “Kakashi. Wake up Kakashi.” Iruka called the other man’s name and shook him gently but didn’t get a response. He pulled the bowl of soapy water he’d taken the time to make in the kitchen and the dishtowel from where he’d left them in the tunnel and gave Kakashi a quick wash. It wouldn’t make sense to remove him from the cell and scent bomb the forest but leave the distinct odor of blood and dungeon on his comrade. He reached into his clothing and removed the plastic storage bag that contained several of his favorite civilian inventions - self heating pain patches. He strategically placed one on Kakashi’s chest, lower abdomen, sides, and back to help warm the blood flowing near his organs before carefully lifting him and dragging him back to the opening he’d crawled in through. He made sure to close both ends and make sure he was not followed before running North towards the ocean and away from Konoha’s direction. When they reached the ocean Iruka stripped to his wetsuit and forced the unconscious jounin into the wetsuit and flippers he’d brought for him. The tight material would work with the heating patches to fight the chill of the ocean and stabilize Kakashi’s broken limbs. He placed his outerwear over Kakashi while he searched the shore for driftwood. He then used chakra string to attach two large pieces of driftwood to Kakashi After checking to make sure the wood was secure and would keep the Copy Nin afloat without causing any additional injuries Iruka stuffed his outerwear into his pack and sent it to his summons dimension. He looped the ends of the chakra string around his shoulders and tied them to his chest and slipped silently into the water. He swam for two miles and then began searching for the cave his mother’s map indicated was somewhere in the area. He was beginning to lose hope and think he misread the map when he remembered his mother had written a time in the corner. Its location in the cliff face was underwater during high tide and even though the entrance was exposed during low tide it was guarded by slippery rocks and whirlpools often formed as the waves crashed against the cliff walls making it inaccessible to all but the most skillful swimmers. Iruka pulled Kakashi to him and cut the driftwood. He lowered the other man’s mask and took a deep breath then filled the other man’s lungs with air before taking one for himself and diving beneath the water. Iruka resurfaced and dove twice more before finding what he was looking for. He was careful to avoid the rocks as he pulled Kakashi towards the chakra enhanced iridescent paint that marked the entrance to the cave once used as a meeting place by his mother and father. He bit his finger and smeared blood over the marker to deactivate the traps he was certain were there. His father was a seals expert and his mother was a strategist specializing in sabotage and assassination. As much as he missed their handiwork anything placed in one of their secret spots was a far cry from the traps used to keep their industrious seven year old from the cookie jar. He pulled Kakashi into the cave and quickly began searching the area. There were signs that his mother wasn’t the last person to use the cave as a hideout, but those were several years old and closer to a small beam of light at the rear. Once he was sure the cave was safe he carried Kakashi farther into the interior and summoned his belongings. He took a chakra pill and crushed one along with a ration bar then dumped them into a canteen of water. He placed his bedroll over Kakashi and made his way to the front of the cave crawling on all fours. Iruka tried not to think of the mold and slime accumulating on his fingers as he felt for the series of indentations and bumps that he hoped would guide him to a stash of wood. After starting a small smokeless fire Iruka muttered a quick apology to the dead Senju he’d cursed when their scion became hokage. Tsunade who had long fought to have a medic nin on each squad made sure that each every one of her nin including Academy students had basic medical training. Those who already had basic training like genin field medics and Academy teachers were taught chakra healing techniques. Over the past 27 months Iruka had lost many an hour that normally would have been dedicated to important things like sleeping learning how to use chakra to close wounds, extract poison and set bones. His work was nowhere near Tsunade’s exacting standards, but he could buy enough time to increase a comrade’s survival rate until they could be checked by a real medic. He still had to use stitches to close large gashes, but he could force enough skin growth to cover a small wound so it wouldn’t get infected or leave a blood trail. He could find a broken bone and direct enough healing chakra increase the rate of healing and temporarily dull pain, but anything beyond stabilizing a broken pinky was outside his practical realm. As Sakura so fondly quoted, “with enough patience and practice he could do anything”. At those times Iruka really hated his former student’s great memory. Kakashi’s left arm, right ankle, several ribs and all of his fingers were broken. Based on the amount of discoloration and swelling Iruka guessed the eye socket around the sharingan was also broken. There were also bruises, cuts and stab wounds all over his body. He exhaled thanking Anko for the last birthday present she’d given him. She had showed up with a brunette wearing old fashioned head gear and a rabbit. They each took a swig of sake straight from the bottle and Anko kicked the rabbit into the wall. The man whose name he later learned was Tenzou stepped on it before handing it to the distraught chuunin while Anko commanded he fix it. They watched Iruka futilely try to heal the twitching creature and grabbed his hand when he picked up a kunai to put it out of its misery. The man took another large swig of the sake then guided Iruka’s hand to the rodent’s broken back. “The desire to live is instinctive. If you place the healing chakra at a focal point the body will automatically direct it where it needs to go.” Iruka was about to yell about how ridiculous that was when he noticed the wood growing from the man’s fingers. The Shodaime had been the only ninja on record to have mastered that jutsu. “I’m not the only survivor of Sensei’s experiments.” Anko whispered softly tangling her fingers with the other mans and pulling him into an embrace. “No one was ever healed completely. We learned what we told you the hard way.” Iruka placed his hands at the bottom of Kakashi’s feet feeding them healing chakra while massaging it into his pressure points. The rabbit he’d saved had ended up being put to sleep by Inuzuka Hana the next day. He didn’t have control or skill necessary to introduce chakra directly into a distressed system so the animal went into shock. The veterinarian had taught him to introduce chakra at pressure points away from the vital organs and wait until he began to feel the body respond. When he felt a slight tug to glide one hand to the farthest chakra wheel and let the body circulate the energy naturally. Once the chakra began moving freely splay his palm over two opposing gates and release an amount of healing chakra equal to what he normally used to lift a single sheet paper. It would mix in with the already circulating energy. Iruka worked slowly and steadily moving from Kakashi’s feet to his hands then to the wheels of the chakra circulatory system. In between each wheel he lifted Kakashi’s head and feed him the liquefied nutrition bar and chakra pill mixture. One hour later Kakashi’s temperature was lower but his breathing was labored. His chest rattled with each expiration; his patient had pneumonia. Iruka ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Kakashi’s absence would soon be noticed and the cave was too close to the fortress for it not to be searched.MisatosPenPen thank you so much for the encouragement. I hope you continue to enjoy the story.
