Chapter 10 Sai’s POV
Sai followed slightly behind his bickering companions. Their behavior was strange to say the least. Upon leaving the hotel, Naruto seemed to be his normal cheerful self, excited to be attending the festival. Sasuke was of course his normal bored self.
But as the day wore on, Naruto seemed to be getting crankier and Sasuke seemed to be getting more and more cheerful. Gleeful even.
Sai watched as once again Naruto bumped shoulders with the Uchiha. ‘What’s wrong? Can’t the idiot walk straight?’ This wasn’t the first time that Naruto had bumped against the Uchiha but it was the first time in awhile that he had succeeded. Naruto seemed to be constantly crowding into Sasuke’s personal space. ‘Actually Naruto seems to be harassing the Uchiha. I don’t know why Sasuke hasn’t knocked him on his ass yet.’
He had decided to walk a little bit behind his teammates after the ‘ice cream incident.’ Not that they even noticed that he wasn’t walking beside them. The two rarely seemed to realize that others were around. Naruto would notice his presence when he would see something interesting to share but then he would go right back to baiting the Uchiha. And when Sasuke noticed, it was usually to give out ‘you don’t matter’ looks.
‘The ice cream incident was really… strange.’ Sai thought to himself. Not too long after lunch, Naruto had gotten bored with trying to win various stupid prizes. And as usual his short attention span had led them back to food. Ice cream for desert.
Sai thought back on what had happened on the bench after they had gotten their ice cream. Naruto had sat down in the middle and proceeded to rave about how awesome the ice cream tasted on such a hot day. Really, they all knew it was hot. Did he have to keep talking about it? But of course the loudmouth finished his way before anyone else.
And that’s when Sai had noticed the calculating gleam that entered Naruto’s eyes. Mainly because a calculating gleam from Naruto was so rare seeing as that would require prior thought before action.
Naruto had then began demanding that Sasuke let him try a lick of his cone to see if it was worth a second trip to the ice cream stand. Sasuke had, of course, refused. But Naruto wasn’t going to accept ‘no’ for an answer. Scooting closer to Sasuke had resulted in Sasuke scooting farther away and holding his cone slightly away from Naruto. The scooting was bad enough but Naruto wasn’t giving up. Putting his hand high up on Sasuke’s thigh, Naruto had quickly leaned over to take a surprise lick from Sasuke’s cone.
Of course the idiot had overestimated how secure the connection was between the cone and the ice cream and the ice cream had flopped right off into Sasuke’s lap. No one moved. All three of them had just stared in stunned silence… staring at Sasuke’s crotch.
Naruto looked horrified and his face paled slightly. He snatched his hand off of Sasuke’s thigh, accidentally bumping the ice cream with his fingertips. Unthinkingly, Naruto stuck his fingers into his mouth to suck off the ice cream. Instead of blowing up, Sasuke just stared at Naruto’s mouth as he sucked on his fingers. Naruto’s eyes then widened and his face became fire engine red. Sasuke had just smirked.
It was the fact that neither said a word after the incident that Sai found most strange. He was used to both of his teammates reacting in big ways especially toward each other. But this time… nothing.
Sai glanced at his companions again. Yep, Naruto was once again going in for the bump. But this time Sasuke suddenly moved away leaving Naruto to stumble slightly as he ran into empty air. Sai continued to watch as Naruto proceeded to pull Sasuke’s hair and yell at him for not paying attention.
‘The idiot doesn’t realize that of course Sasuke was paying attention. How else would he know to move out of the way?’ Sai shook his head to himself. He was definitely going to skip going to the fireworks with these two. He’d had enough of their bizarre behavior for one day.
