Itachi tried to focus on everything else except Sasuke, but it was hard. The first three weeks wasn’t bad, but then he couldn’t stop thinking about the danger Sasuke was in.
Kisame was concerned.
“Why don’t you go visit your little she-wolf?”
“She left the house. There was no reason for her to stay.”
“Not even you?”
“I shouldn’t visit her often anyway. I’ll see her again when Orochimaru’s dead. We all promised to meet up at the house.”
“Check it out; maybe one of them will visit.”
Itachi decided Kisame may be right, so he did go. Kisame came with him, but stayed outside.
The mattresses had been thrown out since they wouldn’t survive prolonged neglect; the rest of the furniture was covered with bed sheets. It was dusty, dark, and lonely. All their personal possessions were hidden in a camouflaged underground room they made for that purpose.
Itachi found that Kakashi had been thinking along the same lines as Kisame; he’d been here and left a small note of love tacked to their bedroom wall. Itachi tacked his own below it. There was another note in Sasuke’s room, but it was from Kakashi to Sasuke. Nothing from Sasuke.
Itachi and Kakashi started a little dialogue on that wall over the next few months, but there was never anything from Sasuke.
Kakashi mentioned in one note that Sasuke hadn’t summoned Ban once since he found Orochimaru’s hideout. There was no communication from Sasuke at all.
Itachi was worried.
Fourteen months passed since Sasuke left and not a word from him.
One day, Itachi and Kisame were walking through the woods inside the Fire Country when Itachi felt a presence and stopped. It was large, powerful, and very hostile. Kisame paused as well. Itachi held out a hand for Kisame to stay put and Itachi walked quietly toward that presence.
It felt familiar, but Itachi couldn’t place it. It was so hostile. It was right up ahead, on the other side of a very large fallen tree trunk. The person there jumped up the top of the log and looked down at Itachi.
Sa—Sasuke.
Itachi was gripped with fear unlike he had ever felt in his life. He was terrified. Why did Sasuke’s appearance fill him with so much fear?
Sasuke’s face wasn’t just expressionless, there was something dark and malevolent about him. Itachi thought that was probably how he looked when around Akatsuki and the night he killed his clan. What had happened to Sasuke to make him just as dark?
It was a long few moments they stared at each other, neither said a word or shifted their dark expressions, but neither prepared for an attack. Then they heard someone approach from behind Sasuke.
“We should both run,” Sasuke said in a even, dark voice that was deeper than Itachi remembered. Sasuke darted off the right and Itachi decided to do as Sasuke said and he darted back to Kisame and suggested they flee. Konoha shinobi were coming toward them.
Itachi didn’t tell Kisame about seeing Sasuke.
For weeks, Itachi’s mind was filled with worry. Did Orochimaru turn Sasuke against him? Did something else happen?
Itachi hid it well from everyone but Kisame; Kisame just assumed prolonged separation from his lover and brother was tearing Itachi up. And Itachi didn’t have the heart to tell Kakashi. He didn’t mention Sasuke in his notes to him.
-----
It was only three weeks later that Kakashi crossed paths with his former ward.
He, Naruto, and Jiraiya, were walking through a field between two forests when Naruto stopped.
“You guys feel that too?” Naruto asked.
Kakashi grew alert. There was a large chakra approaching. No, several powerful shinobi.
The first to appear was Sasuke on a high branch of a tree ahead. He wore a white shirt and dark pants with a thick purple rope belt. His arms were crossed and he glared down at them. None of them knew that young man up there. This was a totally different person.
Around him appeared four more shinobi. These four wore light colored clothes with a outline yin-yang symbol and the same rope belt as Sasuke. Yet, unlike Sasuke, these four’s clothes looked nearly identical and Sasuke wasn’t wearing that emblem.
“Sakon, Jirobo, stay with him. We will hold these three. Go.”
“Hai, Taichou,” the blue haired man with blue lips said with a little resentment.
Captain?! Kakashi thought.
Sakon, the blue haired one, and the fat one, Jirobo, fled back into the trees.
“Kidomaru, Tayuya, delay them.”
“Don’t you mean, kill them?” the girl, Tayuya, asked, malevolence rolling off her.
“We’re under orders not to kill the blond,” Sasuke said. “That’s Uzumaki Naruto. The other two, I don’t think you two could kill them.”
Tayuya scoffed. “Neither can you.”
“I could. We can’t stay away for long; we just need to assure Orochimaru makes it through this area unmolested.”
“If that’s the Jinchuuriki, shouldn’t we capture him?”
“Now is not the time for that. Just delay them.”
“Sasuke! What’s the deal?” Naruto yelled at him.
“Silence.” He didn’t even raise his voice, but his deep, emotionless voice carried easily. “I am the leader of Orochimaru’s elite guard. We won’t let you get near him.”
“Orochimaru? You’re protecting him?”
Jiraiya frowned, but Kakashi really wasn’t sure what to make of it: was Sasuke just playing his part or had he really joined Orochimaru? But captain of his guard? How had Sasuke accomplished that so quickly?
He was startled by how much Sasuke had changed. He was a little taller and more muscular. And those dead eyes. He looked down at them like he didn’t know them.
The other two dropped down to the ground and ran in to attack them. Sasuke stayed in his perch, watching. Was he evaluating his own soldiers or was he assessing the men from his past?
Kidomaru and Tayuya had their hands full with Kakashi and Jiraiya. Naruto was incensed and turned from the fighting to his friend.
“Teme!”
Sasuke deigned to look at him and hopped down to the ground. Naruto attacked Sasuke who didn’t flinch. Sasuke took out his sword and blocked Naruto’s attack. Face to face in the moment Naruto hung in mid-air, Sasuke smirked and then kicked him back to the ground.
“That’s enough,” Sasuke said. “Kidomaru, Tayuya, retreat. We’ve given the others enough time.” Sasuke leapt back up to the tree branch.
Kidomaru and Tayuya gritted their teeth. Sasuke had angry broncos for subordinates, but he had control of them. Respect or fear? They turned to glare at Sasuke, ready to argue, but then Sasuke activated his Sharingan.
“Hai, Taichou,” Kidomaru said.
Kidomaru and Tayuya jumped up into the trees to flank their captain. Sasuke smirked.
Fear, then.
“Naruto, I expected better from you. Next time I’ll have more time to play. Don’t disappoint me again.”
“Sasuke,” Naruto growled.
Sasuke met Kakashi’s eyes, but there was nothing there, no emotion, no signal as to his true intentions.
“Scatter,” Sasuke said and the three of them disappeared.
“What’s happened to Sasuke?” Naruto asked Kakashi.
“Sasuke didn’t fight us. I’m sure he’s just trying to keep Orochimaru’s trust. If he’s been made captain of Orochimaru’s guard, he must be well trusted. As his guard, Sasuke will have an opening to kill him. We have to trust he’s still on our side. Even if he were to turn against us, he wouldn’t turn against his brother.”
“I wouldn’t count on that,” Jiraiya said. “Orochimaru is a slippery snake. He might have found a way to corrupt Sasuke.”
“Never,” Kakashi said.
“Did you see those eyes?”
“His brother’s a descent actor too. I have faith in him.”
-----
Encountered Sasuke. He’s the captain of Orochimaru’s guard. He ordered his people to attacks us, but he didn’t attack. He ordered them to retreat. No one was injured.
Itachi crumbled the note. He took out a kunai and stabbed the wall repeatedly in frustration. What was going on with Sasuke?!
Kisame was waiting for him outside.
“Let’s meet up with Deidara and Sasori,” Itachi said. “Orochimaru needs to die now. Something’s wrong with my brother.”
Itachi’s voice was darker than Kisame ever heard. He didn’t say anything, just followed Itachi into the tree line.
