`~` Naruto paced around the waiting room. He had been in the hospital for three hours already and all he wanted to do was go home. But the doctors were still checking on Konohamaru and they wouldn’t release him until they knew his mental condition. And Itachi was there in the room with him, waiting on Madara’s autopsy report. There hadn’t been any kind of visible wound on the Uchiha’s body. So it had been narrowed to either poison or natural cause. Itachi had not spoken a word to him since they left from Uchiha Corp. And that had Naruto worried that he had done something wrong. The blond was afraid to say anything in case he angered Itachi further, so Naruto stayed away from the Uchiha. The Uzumaki was glad that Sasuke was here. The youngest brother seemed to at least ease some of the tension that permeated the air. Naruto had unconsciously stayed by the other’s side. Of course Kiba was there as well and offered what he called support by being loud and brash. The nurse on duty had already threatened to throw the rambunctious brunet out if he had so much as stepped out of line again. Naruto wasn’t sure if he was over the emotional distress he had suffered earlier when Konohamaru had fallen out of the limo. The kid had kept apologizing about what happened earlier that day. But the blond couldn’t really blame him for his reaction to a story like that. He tired to clam the kid down on the way to the hospital with soothing words, but it was like Konohamaru didn’t understand what Naruto was saying and kept crying for forgiveness. “Moron, you’re going to make a groove in the floor if you don’t stop. Sit down and at least try to relax.” Sasuke snapped at the blond. “I’m sorry, it’s just, shouldn’t they be done by now?” Naruto retaliated. “Just sit down Naruto! I really don’t want to tell you again! Pacing is not going help!” “Would you shut up? What business is it of yours if I want to pace bastard? I’ll do what I damn well please!” The blond ended up shouting at the end. Sasuke stood and placed himself in front of Naruto. “I care about you moron, that’s why it’s my business. I know today was hell, but you have to relax or else you’ll end up with one hell of a headache.” “I don’t fucking want to relax!” Naruto snarled Sasuke didn’t say anything as he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around Naruto. It didn’t take long for the Uzumaki to break down a second time in his arms. It seemed as though he hadn’t let everything out earlier on the sidewalk. And the Uchiha of course knew that Naruto was holding back for Konohamaru. The day had been a big shock, but Naruto had received the biggest one of all. And he just didn’t know how to handle it. Sasuke saw his brother stiffen out of the corner of his eye. But he didn’t acknowledge anything as Naruto needed his full attention right now. He was hoping that the blond would exhaust himself. But it looked as though that wasn’t happening. Naruto had let his emotions run their course for ten minutes before he pulled back and gave Sasuke a small smile. “I’m sorry I was shitty to you. I don’t know how to handle this. I’m just glad you’re here.” Naruto said as he stepped away from his best friend and sat down in one of the chairs. “It’s understandable Naruto. Just please make sure you get some rest. I’m sure my brother wouldn’t want you falling asleep on the job.” Naruto turned his blue gaze to his boss for the first time since they entered the waiting room. But he couldn’t get a reading on the Uchiha. It was almost as if Itachi was a robot and he was in sleep mode. It was almost scary, but Naruto threw those thoughts from his mind. He was grateful that Itachi had been there after the paramedics had taken Konohamaru. He was sure he would have to the concrete if he hadn’t. “Mr. Uchiha, I want to thank you for being there, you know, after they took Konohamaru.” Naruto said so quietly that he almost wasn’t heard. Itachi snapped his gaze towards the blond. “It was no problem Naruto, and please call me Itachi. I think we’re past the Mr. Uchiha mark, don’t you?” The blond smiled sadly and nodded his head. He didn’t like to dwell on the circumstances that led to this. And it was then that he realized he could have had a normal family if only his parents had not been part of unfortunate events. Their story was sad and the blond couldn’t help but wonder what kind of people they were. According to Pein, his mother was beautiful and full of laughter. He thought it weird that no one mentioned his father. But if Kakashi and Iruka knew his father, then he would get information out of them. That thought then made Naruto realize how little he knew about his father’s lives before he came into it. They had never really discussed what they did for a living and that thought made Naruto cringe on the inside. Of course when he was little he had to write a paper on his parents and he asked his parents little questions like what jobs they had, how they met, and what they liked to eat. The first question was avoided easily enough since they were dealing with a ten year old boy who was into Transformers at the time. The blond made a mental note to ask his father’s about their lives. Naruto’s thoughts were interrupted by the doors to the waiting slamming open. Tsunade had entered and the look on her face was unreadable. It was almost as if she were trying to keep herself from laughing. Everyone gave her a ‘well, we’re waiting’ look after a few moments of tense silence. “I just talked to the coroner. Madara died of a heart attack.” Tsunade said as the room fell back into silence, disbelieving looks passing on everyone’s faces. “You have to be kidding me!” Naruto stated as he threw his hands in the air. “No I’m not. Apparently he had a bad heart and the fact that he almost had you in his grasp was too much excitement for him so he went into cardiac arrest. Even if he had made it to the hospital, he would not have survived.” Tsunade crossed her arms. “I see.” Itachi started. “I will call Father and inform him of this tragedy. Please excuse me everyone. Naruto if you want to take a few days off you may. We can discuss the contract upon your return.” “That won’t be necessary sir. I won’t take any more days off unless I’m dying. I’m tired of being babied. I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow.” Naruto couldn’t help some of the anger that slipped from his voice. “Very well.” Itachi said as he slipped out of the room. Silence once again reigned through the room. Naruto wanted to ask about Konohamaru, but was afraid to do so. He didn’t want to hear the answer if there was something wrong with the kid. He was glad that Pein and Orochimaru weren’t here. They were going to set things up for him to inherit the company quietly. The blond had made it clear that he didn’t want to make a big deal of his heritage. That he just wanted to live his life out the way he wanted. “How’s Konohamaru?” Naruto asked as he turned sad blue eyes to the only woman in the room. “He should be released soon. We just wanted to make sure that Madara didn’t poison him. The tests are almost complete.” “And his mental state?” “Good considering all that he has been through. He’ll be fine Naruto, he’s strong.” Tsunade moved towards Naruto and patted his shoulder. Naruto silently thanked all deities that his godson was going to be as fine as he could be. The blond wouldn’t have blamed the kid if he freaked out. Naruto only hoped that life would give the kid some peace for at least a few years before throwing another curve ball at him. ~`~ Naruto smiled as he entered his apartment. He was glad to finally be home for at least a few hours. The hospital chairs had done a number on his back and he couldn’t wait until he could sit on his comfortable couch and sleep the evening and more than likely the night away. But then again, he had been sleeping a lot lately and things had been rocky with Konohamaru, maybe they should do something together. With that thought firmly in place, Naruto turned to the kid to ask him what he wanted to do. The doctor had given him a few days off due to the stress of being kidnapped. The blond had resolved to at least get Konohamaru relaxed enough to return to school. But it wasn’t going to be easy; the kid was strangely silent on the way home. “Hey kid, what do you want to do tonight?” Naruto asked softly as he knelt down so he could look into Konohamaru’s brown eyes. The kid shrugged his shoulders, not really giving Naruto an answer. This frustrated the blond since he knew if nothing had happened today the kid would be begging him to go to Pizza World. “Come on Konohamaru there has to be something? We don’t have to go anywhere; we can stay here at home.” That seemed to perk the Sarutobi up. “I guess. You want to play Mortal Kombat?” Naruto smiled at the eagerness that Konohamaru had been trying to hide. It had been some time since the two just sat down and played video games. “Go get everything set up and I’ll join you with some snacks.” Konohamaru smiled and made his way out of the living room and to his room. Naruto just grinned after him, happy that at least the kid hadn’t shut himself completely off. The blond made his way to the kitchen and began to prepare some snacks. He of course had to make sure they were healthy. Naruto hated that he had to make healthy snacks, but it had to be done for Konohamaru’s health. Of course he would sneak a few chips in here and there, but the Uzumaki didn’t really see anything wrong with that. When he was done prepping everything, Naruto was about to pick up the tray when the doorbell to his apartment rang. He turned and made his way to the door, wondering who in the world was ringing his bell. He had already told everyone he was okay when Sasuke started to get a flood of calls on his cell. And most of his friends had made plans to visit tomorrow evening, so Naruto was rather curious as to was at the door. When he opened it, he wasn’t expecting to see his old friend Gaara. The blond took the other up in his arms and hugged him fiercely. “I can’t believe you’re here! How did you get here so fast from Suna?” “I took a plane.” Gaara answered as Naruto let him go and ushered him into the apartment. “Konohamaru and I were about to play some video games. You can join us if you want!” The blond went into the kitchen and grabbed the tray of snacks. Naruto noticed how silent Gaara was as they went into the kids’ room. The blond wished that his friend wasn’t so broody, because it meant something was bothering him. And Naruto hated it when something bothered Gaara. The other wasn’t very trusting of people and it only meant that someone was messing with him. When they got into Konohamaru’s room, the kid jumped at Gaara and hugged his waist. While the kid was wary of the redhead, he couldn’t help but like the other man. He had kept his godfather safe when they were in the orphanage and that was a plus in Konohamaru’s book. The young boy pulled back and went back to setting up his X Box. Naruto fixed everyone a place to sit. He was glad that the rooms in the apartment were a decent size. He would have hated if they were small and more than likely would have moved somewhere else. He smiled at Gaara while he patted the empty chair beside him. The redhead didn’t say anything as he sat down beside his long time friend. Naruto could still tell there was something wrong with him, but the blond really didn’t want to pry since Gaara would tell him on his own time. They began to play the game and Naruto was having a great time. Gaara didn’t want to take part, so the blond and Konohamaru played to their hearts content for a couple of hours. When they played games, they always got lost in their competition and lost sight of the world around them and also all passing of time. When Naruto glanced down at his godson, he could tell the kid was ready to go to sleep. “Hey kid, why don’t you go to sleep? We can pick this up in the morning.” The kid only nodded his head as he got up and turned off his console before starting his nightly routine. Naruto stood up and stretched his body. He hated when he sat still like that, but it had been worth it since he got to spend time with Konohamaru and nothing was more precious than that. The blond turned towards Gaara and gave him a warm smile. “Come on we can retreat out to the living room.” Naruto said as he picked up the empty snack tray and left the kids room. They left the room and Naruto sat the tray on the counter to be dealt with in the morning. He then followed Gaara’s example and plopped down on the couch, stretching his legs out before him. The silence was uncomfortable, but it was broken as soon as Konohamaru shut the door to his bedroom. “What’s wrong Gaara?” Naruto asked as he turned his head to his friend. “Why didn’t you tell me about Madara? I could have protected you.” Gaara’s voice was flat. “I didn’t know anything until today! I didn’t even know he existed!” The blond protested. “Then please tell me why he was after you. Madara is not a man who goes after strangers for no reason. In order for him to do something like that you had to have crossed him somehow. I didn’t take you as that kind of person Naruto.” The blond waved his arms frantically. “Trust me I wasn’t working for him. But if I tell you, this has to stay secret. I don’t want anyone to know, especially the media.” Gaara raised his nonexistent eyebrow. “I promise.” “Well it seems that I’m the son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki.” “Really? I already knew that once you hit puberty. Your resemblance to the man is quite striking. It didn’t take me long to figure it out.” Naruto could only stare at his friend in shock. “Why didn’t you say anything?” “Because there might have been a chance that I was wrong. But the main thing is you weren’t involved with that man and I’m glad.” “Why would you think that?” An angered look crossed Gaara’s face. “Because the media is a having a field day with your possible connection to Madara Uchiha. I’m guessing Uchiha is going to deal with it tomorrow sometime. So you better be on your toes.” Naruto groaned. “Why does this happen to me?” “Because you’re a trouble magnet.” Gaara grinned. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
