Sasuke strolled through the dense wood that surrounded Konoha searching. He wasn’t in any hurry; training didn’t start for another half hour which meant Kakashi, who was the object of his search, would be at the memorial stone for at least another hour.
Halfway onto his nap he had become agitated for no reason. He couldn’t stop thinking and Shikamaru’s excruciatingly silent presence was beginning to push him over the edge so he decided it was best to leave and find Kakashi before he became tempted to push his friend for an answer.
Shikamaru had said that he needed to think and Sasuke was more than happy to give him the time he needed regardless of his own impatiens. He realised that he should be worried that Shikamaru may tell Naruto if he decided not to help him but the Nara was one of the few people he trusted not to betray his confidence.
It would be difficult though, if Shikamaru decided not to help him. He had sent a letter to Gaara in Suna as well and informed him about pretty much everything that had happened. From the reply he received Kiba was lucky that he wasn’t buried 50 meters under the ground right now in a sand coffin that the Kazekage tailored for him personally.
The Uchiha smirked as he broke through the tree line, that really would have been something amusing to see. He was glad he had informed Gaara about the situation even though it had broken his promise to Naruto that he wouldn’t tell anyone about him and Kiba. The redhead loved the silly little fox almost as much as he himself did and he knew that if it ever came to it he could count on Gaara to protect Naruto with his life.
Squinting as the sun hit his eyes Sasuke wondered why he didn’t feel jealous or threatened by the Jinchuuriki of the sand and when he thought about it he realised that the way Gaara loved Naruto was different to the way he did.
Naruto was like Gaara’s second half, the half that allowed him to enjoy things and see life in a way other that the horror that they were both brought up in. Naruto showed Gaara so much that the redhead felt he couldn’t. So he protected Naruto with everything he had, directing all of Shukaku’s rage and malevolence toward that and it gave it a semblance of calm. The Uchiha suspected that if Naruto were to be murdered than Gaara would lose control completely without any hope of ever turning back, he believed the Kazekage would be completely consumed by the hatred of the demon and the raven felt sorry for the one responsible for his death.
Soon the memorial stoner came into sight and with it so did the silver haired jonin standing there silently, “Nothing to say to Obito today?” Sasuke questioned, not bothering to announce himself as he knew Kakashi would have sensed his presence long ago.
“I had just finished telling him about your request to join the ANBU,” Kakashi turned his head slightly to look at the Uchiha, “and about how I think it is a bad idea.”
Sasuke narrowed his eyes slightly, “but Tsunade told me that you approved of my request. You wouldn’t take that back would you?”
Kakashi lowered his head and pinched the bridge of his nose, “no Sasuke I wouldn’t. I believe this is something you want to do and I’ve never stood in the way of my students. It’s just,” Kakashi looked to the heavens and sighed out all of his frustrations, “I know you’ve always wanted to join ANBU and when you told me that I said you I would support you when the time came for you to do so, but I just want to make sure that you’re doing this, now, for the right reasons and not simply running away from something we both know you need to face.”
“You’re talking about Naruto, about my feelings for him,” The Uchiha snickered and looked away from his old sensei, “I took the advice you gave me that day on the rooftop and talked to him about it.”
Kakashi turned to Sasuke fully now with concern filling his one visible eye. The Uchiha still had his face turned away and his long fringe covered the one side of his face that the copy ninja was graced with seeing but he didn’t need to see the Uchiha’s expression to know that his talk with Naruto had not gone well.
He could tell by the tone of his voice and his body language and didn’t need his Sharingan eye either. Normally the Uchiha was so proud, back straight with his head held high, still managing to put his hands in his pockets and not slouching one bit and he never looked away. No matter the situation or the enemy Kakashi had never seen anyone stare Sasuke down regardless of whether his Sharingan was activated or not. His gaze was completely unwavering even in the face of death and it wasn’t just as a shinobi technique of intimidation either. The Uchiha never backed down and never let anyone get the better of him.
He was so different now though. The way he stood was as if he was trying to fold in on himself, like he was trying to limit the space he took up in the world or maybe just disappear altogether. He wouldn’t look the older jonin in the eyes, no that wasn’t right; he wouldn’t look at him at all. Clearly Naruto had done more than just reject Sasuke’s affection for him.
Kakashi swallowed another sigh and plopped down on the grass and stared at the spot next to him pointedly, knowing Sasuke was watching him through his mop of dark hair, indicating that the Uchiha should join him.
At first Sasuke didn’t move a muscle and Kakashi thought that he was just going to up and leave without explaining what had happened but very slowly the Uchiha began to edge forward and soon he was seated on the grass as well, staring stoically at the memorial stone.
“you know being rejected isn’t the end of the world Sasuke, I should know, and your still very young, there Are plenty of opportunities for you to find someone,” The jonin felt himself getting nervous, he didn’t know if Sasuke wanted to talk about it or not and the young ninjas emotions could be so volatile at times despite his cool exterior and the last thing Kakashi wanted was for this to turn into an argument.
Sasuke frowned and turned his head quickly to affix the jonin with a sharp glare, “you think I’m acting like this just because he rejected me?”
Kakashi scratched the back of his head and felt himself break out in s cold sweat, “Um no?”
The Uchiha glared for a few more seconds before growling in frustration and throwing himself back on the grass deciding it would be easier to stare at the sky and explain the situation rather than at Kakashi and watch his reaction.
“He was worried that if he left the guy he was with that no one else would want him and I told him that-that,” Sasuke closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath before continuing, “I told him that I would want him, regardless of anything that anyone else thought or said. I-I kissed him and at first it seemed as if he was into it, he even kissed me back for a bit but then he flipped out.”
The Uchiha opened his eyes again, hoping that doing so would stop the images flowing through his mind and he turned cold dark eyes to Kakashi, “He told me he never wanted to speak to me again and that he would rather transfer out of team seven or go to Suna and lose all his friends here than ever see me again. He got so mad he even started losing control the Kyuubi.”
Kakashi listened to Sasuke’s recollection of events with slowly widening eyes. He couldn’t believe that Naruto had acted that way, he had though that the blonde maybe had some form of understanding about the Uchiha’s feelings for him and that they were reciprocated after he had seen the way they were together on the afternoon he went to see Sasuke about what he had seen transpire in the forest but clearly the blonde was far more dense or at least far more blinded by the love had had for his current partner to see that he could have something really good with the Uchiha.
“I’m sorry Sasuke, I can’t help but feel I’m somewhat responsible for this,” Kakashi turned back to face the memorial stone trying to hide the guilt he felt from the raven beside him, “so your joining ANBU now for him.”
Sasuke nodded, “this is his village Kakashi, his home and team seven is where he belongs. He might have been angry at me when he said those things but I really think that what I’m doing is for the best. It’s easier for everyone this way.”
“Do you think it will be easier for him when he’s crying because he thinks you’re dead?” Kakashi glanced at Sasuke out of the corner of his eyes waiting to see how the Uchiha reacted to the question.
“So you know about that bit of the plan then?” was all that Sasuke said even though his eyes were filling with concern at the thought, “who told you?”
“The captain of ANBU came to see me to ask me some questions about you and your mental state. He asked if you would be strong enough to attend your own funeral, kind of like a test,” Kakashi explained.
“And what did you say,” Kakashi noticed the Uchiha tense next to him indiscriminately as he said those words. Clearly the idea of attending his own funeral didn’t appeal to him.
“I told him what I thought, that you are both strong mentally and physically just as I and others have trained you to be,” Kakashi stated simply, “as for if he believed me or has come to a decision about whether or not you shall attend your own funeral is unknown to me,” Kakashi’s eye turned into a curve as he smiled, “but don’t worry about that now Sasuke, first you have to pass the written exam on Friday.”
Sasuke sat up and pulled a bit of grass out of his hair, “three days left to wait,” he mumbled ripping the piece of grass apart, “that reminds me. Kakashi I won’t be attending training or missions for the next three days. I’ve already cleared it with the Hokage.”
“Oh and I thought this wasn’t about running away from Naruto and avoiding him,” thankfully Kakashi had an eyebrow to rise at this.
“It’s not,” Sasuke said a bit too quickly, “I mean I just want to use the next three days to prepare for the exam and get all my affairs in order just in case I pass. I just want to be prepared is all,” the Uchiha picked at the blades of grass, “just say I’m sick or something will you? I’ve already talked to Sai this morning and asked him if he can train with you guys for the next couple of days if he isn’t busy with anything else and he said ok.”
“Oh well then I guess I’ll be your messenger boy to Naruto and Sakura then,” sighed Kakashi making it sound like he was going to a gigantic effort, “I suppose I should head to training now then, it will be amusing to see Sakura’s face when I’m less than an hour late.”
Kakashi stood and began to make his way to the training ground the team was supposed to have met at twenty minutes ago but paused when he noticed Sasuke hadn’t moved. He was still sitting there in the slightly long grass staring silently at the stone.
“Does he ever talk back Kakashi, when you ask him for advice does Obito ever give you his opinion,” Questioned the Uchiha when he felt the copy ninja’s gaze boring a hole into him from behind.
“No Sasuke he doesn’t but he doesn’t need to,” Kakashi said bitter sweetly, “all he does is listen very well but that’s all you need him to do. Go ahead and talk to him for a while and I assure you that after your conversation is done you’ll have all the answers that you need.”
With those words Kakashi turned and continued on his way to the training grounds and began to fabricate a story for Sasuke that was believable but still somewhat obscure so he would still sound like himself. He couldn’t help the smile that was forming under his mask though as he heard Sasuke mumble a quiet greeting to Obito and introduced himself as ‘one of Kakashi’s students’ before starting to explain his problems to the dead man.
Unconsciously Kakashi moved his hand to his upper arm where is own ANBU tattoo stood covered by the cloth of his shirt and he glanced at the heavens one last time sending a silent prayer to Obito that he would help Sasuke make the right decision.

“I’m sorry Sasuke but I just can’t do it,” Shikamaru stood in a little alleyway that smelt of stale cardboard with the Uchiha and hoped that he wouldn’t be angered by his answer. A fight rather verbal or psychical would just be too troublesome at the moment and would probably attract attention from the busy street that the alley was connected to. That would really annoy him since he went to all the trouble of dragging Sasuke into the dank little place to get some privacy to talk to him in the first place.
Sasuke sighed and looked at his feet for a second before pulling himself together and giving Shikamaru look for look, “It’s okay, I really find it quite reassuring to know that Naruto means so much to you that you couldn’t lie to him about something like this.”
Shikamaru reached up and tightened his ponytail, “what will you do now, if I know you you’ve always got a contingency plan when things don’t go your way,” the Nara tried not to sound to accusing when he spoke.
Sasuke gave a short laugh and ran his hand through his hair, “Yeah playing shogi with you all the time taught me that. Hey Shika you won’t tell Naruto will you, now that you know?”
Shikamaru pretended to be insulted for a minute before he offered Sasuke a smile, “All I said was that I wouldn’t help, I didn’t say anything about trying to sabotage you,” Shikamaru clapped a hand on Sasuke’s shoulder as he moved past him out of the alleyway but stopped when he realised something, “You just called me Shika before, you never do that.”
“W-well yeah I g-guess I did,” Sasuke stuttered a little awkwardly, “Sorry it won’t happen again.”
Shikamaru just smiled, “oh hey you better come round to my house and play one last game of shogi with me before you off yourself okay,” the Nara gave a lazy wave and strolled out of the alley and into the crowd, “see you later Sasuke.”
Sasuke stood in the alley by himself for some moments after Shikamaru left laughing silently to himself but his jubilance didn’t last long as he realised he would now have to talk to the Hokage and send the Kazekage a letter requesting his aid instead of Shikamaru’s.
Composing himself and replacing his mask of utter disinterest and boredom Sasuke moved out of the alley also and began to make is way slowly to the Hokage tower to speak with Tsunade who he guessed would be none too happy with him about his decision to leave his team and the dobe behind.

“Hey Naruto do you think that maybe we should take Sasuke some soup or something since he’s sick, it might make him feel better,” Sakura had been trying to make Naruto talk to her and his teammates all day but there hadn’t been a peep from him, not even when Sai insulted his man hood in his attempt to help.
“Sakura Kakashi said Sasuke has been violently ill which I can only assume means some kind of vomiting, do you really think that he would be interested in food right now,” Sai said in a matter of fact tone with that creepy smile still plastered on his face.
“Sai it’s not really the food that counts, it’s the gesture,” Sakura put a thoughtful finger to her lips, “though I must admit the food is nice to. It’s fun to have someone wait on you hand and foot when you’re sick, it makes you feel special and, well better I guess.”
“I have not read that anywhere, did you get it from one of your medical text books?” Sai questioned with genuine interest beginning to spread across his face.
“No Sai it’s not one of those things you get from a book,” Said Sakura with a soft smile. Sai was just so cute when he was confused as she had a soft spot for him when he gave her that look like he was a lost little kid who had just found out something incredible, “next time you’re sick I’ll bring you some soup and you can see what I mean okay?”
Sai nodded and looked away hiding the little blush that was spreading across his cheeks as he placed the rest of his ninja equipment in his bag before hoisting it over his shoulder, “do you think Sasuke would mind if I came with the two of you?”
“I don’t think he would mind at all,” Sakura practically cheered, “Sasuke actually likes you, because you’re quiet and stuff like he is,” the pink haired konoichi lowered her voice slightly, “and don’t ever tell Sasuke I told you this because he would most definitely kill me but he really likes your art to.”
“But he told me he thought it was an impractical ninja tool,” Sai said getting confused, “why would he tell you he liked my art and then insult it?”
“Why does Sasuke do anything,” Naruto mumbled shoving his hands deep into his pockets and turning in the direction of home.
“Hey, where are you going,” Sakura said and reached out her hand to take the blondes, “you’re not really going to pass up an opportunity to gloat that you’re doing training and getting stronger while Sasuke is sick in bed are you?”
Naruto glanced at Sakura over his shoulder before pulling his hand out of Sakura’s grip and turning back to the direction of home, He froze however when he saw a hooded figure leaning against a tree staring at the small group.
Sakura squinted against the setting sun and used her hand to shield her eyes as she tried to identify their visitor, “I think that’s Shino, what would he be doing her?”
“Maybe he lost one of his bugs,” Said Sai as he to scrunched up his face to match Sakura’s, “does this help you see someone better? It makes it harder for me.”
Sakura decided that she wasn’t even going to dignify that question with a response though she knew that Sai would bug her about it later. She was more interested at that moment in why Shino was here watching them train and not in the hospital with Kiba.
“You know what Sakura I think I will come to the hospital to see Sasuke with you after all,” Naruto said quickly and took a step back almost bumping into the still squinting konoichi, “so are we going or what,” He asked grumpily when she didn’t move.
“Hey Shino do you need help with something,” Sakura called out unexpectedly and waved, making the blonde blanch and curl his hands into fists.
“Sakura what did you do that for,” Naruto almost shouted at her. The last thing he wanted to do was see Shino right now after managing to avoid him steadily for weeks.
“What do you mean Naruto, he might need us for something and he’s your friend isn’t he, or do you not like him anymore,” Sakura’s green eyes narrowed slightly as she watched for any hint that her blonde teammate was hiding something from her. She would get to the bottom of this damn it!!
“N-no it’s not that I don’t like him it’s just that…” Naruto let himself trail off and averted his gaze when he noticed how intently Sakura was staring at him, deciding that it would be best to make lengthy eye contact with the ground from now on.
It wasn’t that he didn’t like Shino, really it wasn’t. It was just that he thought it was better to avoid him just in case the blonde let something slip while he was talking. Besides he became jealous enough of the bug ninja just when someone talked about him. How bad would the jealousy feel if they met face to face?
“I need to talk to Naruto,” the blonde cursed all things curseable as Shino’s gentle voice drifted to them over the wind, “preferably alone.”
Sakura tried to keep the disappointment off her features as Shino spoke. She really wanted to know what was going off and from the way Naruto was acting she just knew that it had something to do with introverted bug ninja who was now slowly walking toward them.
“Alright then he’s all yours,” Sakura said giving the blonde a little nudge forward from behind, “we’ll see you at Sasuke’s Naruto, try not to be too long with Shino though ok because Sasuke needs his rest and we don’t want to stay to late,” She turned and grabbed the sleeve of Sai’s shirt and started to pull him along, “Come on Sai, this is one of those moments where you leave people alone.”
Naruto sighed as the sound of retreating footsteps finally vanished and concluded that it would be best to make this encounter short and sweet. That way he did run the risk of saying something he shouldn’t, ha yeah right.
“I’ll make this quick since you have somewhere you need to be Naruto,” Said Shino when the two were close to one another that he didn’t have to yell, “I know what you’ve been doing with Kiba and I’ve come to give you some advice.”
Shino watched as every muscle in the blonde’s body tensed and any facial expression he had completely shut down reminding him of a certain Uchiha, “I know you won’t bother denying it, it would be a waste of both of our time. What I want to say is simple and I don’t mean it to hurt you but someone has to be blunt with you about this situation. I thought I could trust Sasuke with that task when I realised he found out but clearly he’s much more careful with your feelings that he lets on.”
“H-how long h-have you know-n for?’ Naruto managed to force the question past the lump of panic that was slowly collecting in his throat and the voice screaming in his mind that he was as good as dead now that the Aburame knew and had him alone with no witnesses.
“I have known for a very long time, practically from the start and I can tell from the panic I see setting in that you clearly think I’ve come to exact some kind of revenge upon you for touching him but that isn’t the case,” Shino paused and gathered his courage, he really didn’t want to do this to the fragile blonde shinobi but someone need to tell him straight out what was going on. That was why he had put so much hope in Sasuke because at least he would have been there to pick up the pieces afterward.
Dismissing that thought for now the Aburame took a deep breath before continuing, “Naruto Kiba will never leave me for you. I’m sure you’ve realised now that sometimes Kiba’s tastes run into the extremes of sex and the simple fact of the matter is that you are far more resilient than I am, far more durable. Most of the time he’s okay but there are those times when he can’t help himself and so he comes to you because he is too afraid of hurting me.”
At first Shino didn’t know what the blonde was going to do, he couldn’t read past the panic but then he saw the cogs beginning to turn in Naruto’s mind as all the pieces and parts that confused him came to rest in place and eventually large silent tears began a slow decent down the whiskered cheeks.
“I’m sorry Naruto, I didn’t want it to have to end this way but I have to tell you to stay away from Kiba for your own good. I won’t tolerate you coming to him anymore for anything other than friendship and you can be sure that once Kiba is better I will be giving him a very stern punishment for the horrible manner in which he has treated you. It’s not right, you deserve so much better.”
Shino took a cautious step forward and held out his hand for the stricken blonde to take but even that simple movement caused Naruto to take a lurching step backward and is eyes to widen impossibly larger allowing for more tears to fall.
“Naruto please I know your upset, let me take you to Sakura alright,” Shino’s quiet calming voice had never been more useless to him as he watched Naruto’s eyes flicker from his offered hand then to the forest surrounding them and back again.
He was acting like a fox that didn’t know whether it should run or not when it was confronted by a hunter and just as Shino was considering tackling the blonde before he made a run for it the blonde turned tail and ran off, channelling chakra into his legs for a burst of speed. One second he was there and hen the next he was gone leaving Shino to call out for him to stop and please come back.
Naruto didn’t know where he was going, all he knew was that he had to run, at least for a little while, at least until this hole in his chest stared to close. He trusted in his feet to know where to take him, they had never led him astray before and he begged that this time would be no different.
The sun set completely and still he ran, faster now, sure that he heard his name being called and every unfamiliar rustle of leaves or creak of branches made him change his direction but eventually his feet turned him back to their previous path.
Soon he left behind the grass for sand and before he knew it he was collapsing outside the walls of Suna with the afternoon desert sun beating down upon him and a Sand ninja with a face painted in purple running toward him shouting things that he was too exhausted to hear.
A day; that was all it took me to make a three day journey, Naruto thought as black began to eat away at his vision, wait time that bastard Sasuke hears about this.
***
Sasuke looked at the letter in his hands with a deep furrow in his brow and he read it over again just to make sure he wasn’t imagining things.
Sasuke,
I don’t know why you’re asking me to request that Naruto some to Suna for a mission when he is already here. Good luck with the ANBU examination.
Gaara.
Already there? How?
The Uchiha had only spoken to Tsunade and sent the letter four days ago so unless Naruto was a mind reader or could see into the future and decided that he would save himself sometime and travel to Suna sooner than expected Sasuke had no idea what was going on. Tsunade had only drawn up the pretend mission that they were planning on giving to the dobe this morning.
Something must have happened but the Uchiha didn’t know what. For the past few days he had hidden himself deep in the Uchiha compound and studied constantly, only emerging to actually take the exam itself and his solitude had certainly helped with the ruse that he was very ill.
Thinking of the exam however drew his attention away from thoughts of the blonde and to the unopened scroll that had been delivered to him by an ANBU along with his letter from the Kazekage.
The scroll contained his results.

A/N: Hope you guys enjoyed this very long chapter. Poor Shino though, having to hurt Naruto like that. I’m thinking I may have to bring Neji in soon to do some serious wrath of the gods’ arse kicking when it comes to Kiba and Sasuke. Also I get the feeling there are going to be a lot of errors in this chapter so let me know how bad you think it is and I might be bothered with editing later
