Sakura stood in front of the little wardrobe, trying to figure out what to wear. Under any normal circumstances, she'd just wear her ninja clothes on a surveillance, but this wasn't normal. She was undercover and had to go to a bar first.
Finally, she grabbed a top with a low V neckline in red, her usual color. She got the wicked idea to wear the new red bra and panties underneath. Then she considered her choices for the bottom half, but didn't like the longer pants or the shorts she normally wore. Then she remembered the skirt she'd thrown in at the last minute. Black, it was a flowing material that fell to mid-thigh.
She was having a mental fight over her shoes when Kakashi emerged from the bathroom. "Problem?" He asked.
She looked over her shoulder, but he was naked and wet. In defense, she turned back to the wardrobe. He stepped up next to her and she fought the urge to attack him. "I'm trying to decide on my shoes." She glared at him, daring him to roll his eyes.
"We can come back here after the bar if you'd like." He pulled a dark sweater and grey pants out of his side of the wardrobe, then leaned around her to pull his other things out of the dresser. Sakura stood still with her eyes closed, determined to get out of the room without starting anything.
She took a deep breath. Nerves steadied, she said, "okay, that works." Decided, she pulled her new heels out and escaped into the bathroom. Dressing took remarkably less time, now that she was familiar with the garters. She brushed her hair and decided to twist it up on top of her head with her hair sticks.
Satisfied with how she looked, she came out from the bathroom. Kakashi stared at her. "What?" she asked, squirming.
He closed his mouth with some effort. "Nothing. You look…stunning."
She grinned at him, her face lighting up at the compliment. "Well. Thank you. You're looking awfully good, yourself."
He smiled at that and held out his hand. "Let's go get some food and do some work before I'm tempted to do bad things to you."
She snickered. "What bad things?"
"Please, Sakura, save my sanity. Let's go." He took her hand and ushered her out the door to their room. He locked it behind him and then put his arm around her as they walked down the stairs.
He'd seen a barbecue restaurant two blocks over that was also on the way to the bars they'd picked out. He opened the door for her and put his hand on the small of her back. They were seated in a quiet booth for two towards the back.
As they got settled yet again on the same side of the booth, they ordered tea and the shared dinner of beef, pork and chicken. The waitress, an older lady, smiled at them and retreated to the kitchen to put in the order and get their drinks. Sakura was grateful she wouldn't have to glare at the waitress throughout the meal.
Kakashi had barely noticed her, though. As soon as the waitress left, he'd pulled her up against him and wrapped his arm around her. This was a new aspect to him she was still getting used to. She never would have pegged him as someone willing to engage in public displays of affection.
As she was thinking this, he spoke. "I'm not normally so…outward with my dates. I want you to know that you aren't even in the same universe as the women I've dated before." She stared at him a minute, trying to understand what he was saying.
She looked down at her hands, and her eyes caught the glint of their wedding rings. She'd shoved the questions aside this morning…and yesterday and, well, anytime they came up. They wouldn't be here forever. They were going to have to face it eventually. What did she want from him?
Ninja. She'd heard the clichés over and over again. The uncertainty, the idea that they could be dead just about any time. As a medic, she rejected that often, but the truth was their medicine only went so far. From there, they tried to live as much as they could within their short lifetimes.
How long would they have?, she wondered. And in that moment, she realized what she wanted. She wanted the rings to be real. She looked up at him and smiled. "I…don't know what to say to that. 'Thank you' seems, well, inadequate."
He tilted her chin up to look at him again. "You don't need to say anything." And with that, he kissed her gently, little more than a brush of his lips over hers. She melted into the kiss and they didn't even hear the waitress come back until their cups were set on the table in front of them.
They broke apart and the waitress smiled at them. "Can I get you anything else?"
Sakura shook her head, and turned her attention to her tea. Kakashi handed her the honey and she stirred. "We're fine, thank you." He said and she disappeared. They sipped their tea in silence for a while, enjoying simply sitting together.
Kakashi considered how much their relationship had changed in just over twenty-four hours. Then he stopped as he realized that things had been changing gradually for a very long time. He realized he'd looked forward to missions they'd had together for quite a while.
He couldn't put his finger on when that had changed for him. He remembered her as a little girl. She'd been scared, whiny, but there was a core of loyalty and, yes, even bravery to her. It had been a process, but she'd managed to get away from the scared little girl and become the woman she was now.
He thought about the first time he'd hugged her. She'd been crying over Sasuke. She'd allowed herself to get depressed over the fact that they hadn't yet been able to do anything about him. He sat with her most of the evening and let her talk it out. She's screamed and raged and then cried.
He'd admired her for that, for the ability to let out all those emotions. In the end, her determination had won out and he'd watched her, right then, put aside her childhood crush. Kakashi had never realized just how deeply her feelings for Sasuke had run. When he'd selfishly left them behind, it had killed that in her.
She'd shed her tears and anger that night. She still wanted to get him back to the Leaf, but Kakashi suspected it was more about saving him from himself and facing the people he'd betrayed, than any lingering love for him.
Then the Akatsuki had attacked. Pein had leveled the village, and he himself had faced ghosts from his past. Naruto, once again, had saved the day. Then Sasuke had come back, determined to take revenge on the whole village. He'd betrayed Karin, was nearly blind.
And still, she stood her ground. It was…something to watch. All those teams in all the years he'd been considered for taking on a group, he'd never seen any like those three. After all, it had fallen apart, but the core reasons he'd passed them stood over time. She and Naruto, even in the face of Sasuke's betrayal refused to abandon him. They tried, time and time again.
They still felt the pain of his death, even now, months later. He'd foolishly challenged Naruto. He should have known that Kyuubi would never let Naruto die. And once Naruto had committed to something, he never backed down.
It had almost killed Naruto. He'd retreated into himself for a long time after that. It took a lot of coaxing from both him and Sakura to bring Naruto out of it.
He mentally shook himself. No, his feelings toward Sakura had been changing for a long time. He looked at her now, her head was on his shoulder and she was snuggled into him, drinking her tea. No, there was no going back. So what was he going to do about it?
Her wedding band caught his eye. He wasn't seriously considering… but he had to be honest, he was. He'd avoided any kind of entanglement like that. He'd gone out of his way not to get too close to anyone. But Sakura...well, nothing with Sakura thus far had been normal. Nothing between them was anything like he'd had before.
He had already come to the conclusion that he wanted and needed her with him. He hadn't yet figured out how they'd accomplish that. There was still the niggling doubt about how she'd be able to handle things once they started getting the crap for their relationship. Sakura was a strong person, he had no doubt about that. But, would their relationship withstand it?
As he watched her sip her tea, he realized that, in this, he would simply have to trust her. If it got to be too much, well, they'd deal with it then. But he couldn't borrow trouble or their relationship would be in trouble, before it really got started.
His decision made, he kissed her gently on the temple, then sipped his own tea. A moment later, the waitress brought out their food. She set the meat to sizzling and then unloaded the vegetables and rice. When they assured her they didn't need anything else, she headed back to the kitchen.
The separated just far enough to be able to eat. Sakura realized just how hungry she was and dug in to the rice and vegetables, not even waiting for the meat. Kakashi watched her eat and realized he must be really bad off. Because even watching her eat was a pleasure. He shook his head at himself, picked up his own chopsticks and helped himself to some of the pork.
Sakura, her hunger sated for the moment, sat back. "So, do we still want to keep our cover at the bars?"
Kakashi checked himself before he literally growled his yes. "I think that would be best, at this point. If we don't get anything more this evening, we can always come back another night and shift our strategy then."
Sakura refused to examine the disappointment his answer caused, but she did recognize the truth. They needed to leave their options open. The relationship that had bloomed between them could not get in the way of their mission. She nodded in agreement. "Okay." She said for lack of something better.
He'd watched her reaction and thought he saw a bit of disappointment on her face at his answer. He wondered about it for a minute. "Did you want to do something...different?" He tried to keep his voice even.
She considered him a moment. "No. Frankly, I'd rather not, if you want the truth. I'd prefer, if I'm being honest, that the thought of me flirting with another man make you angry." She shrugged, but he saw she was trying to play it off.
He put his arm around her and leaned in. "Well then. It might please you to know that what I wanted to say was more along the lines of 'I don't want you flirting with another man as long as you're alive'." He punctuated that with another kiss on her temple before turning her head to claim her mouth. "I hope you don't mind this, but..." he paused. "But you're mine now, Sakura. No one else's."
She felt a kind of warm gooey feeling spread through her at his words. She smiled up at him. "No, I don't mind. In fact, I like it." She leaned up enough to put her own lips on his.
"Okay, then. That's settled. Any change to our cover - no matter how thin it is anymore, is a last resort. I won't be responsible for what I'd do if some foul-mouthed dock worker puts his hands on you." He sipped his tea, wishing it was sake.
The corner's of Sakura's mouth tilted up. "I'll try not to put them in harm's way. I'd hate to have to heal them after you break every bone in their body."
Kakashi chuckled. They turned back to their food, and ate in silence until they finished. The waitress returned with the bill and set the folder on the table, then began clearing the dishes. "Would you like anything else, then?"
Sakura shook her head. "Let me get this dear," she smiled cheekily up at Kakashi. "Since you forgot your wallet."
He raised an eyebrow at her, but let it pass. Sakura put the money into the folder and handed it back to the waitress. "No change."
The waitress nodded. "Thank you very much. Have a good evening!" And she turned and left.
They stood up and headed toward the front of the restaurant. "I'd better, um, stop. I'll be right back." Sakura darted back to the bathroom. When she'd taken care of things, she checked her hair, pinched her cheeks and bit her lips to put color into them. She was going to have to break down and get Ino to show her how to put makeup on.
Satisfied with how she looked, she rejoined Kakashi and they headed to the first bar.
