Around lunchtime, they dropped from the trees. "Let's take a brief rest. If we keep it up, we should reach the River border by mid-afternoon." He held a hand out for Sakura and they sat together, taking out a small lunch.
Tenten approached Lee. "Hey big guy, we need to talk." He followed her over to a tree a bit away from the rest.
"Are you okay?" He asked her.
She stared in to the serious brown eyes she loved so much. "Yes, actually. Lee - " she paused, took a deep breath. "Lee, we're going to have a baby." There, it was out. She stared hard at the crushed grass under her feet.
When he didn't make a sound, she looked up at him. He was staring at her, his mouth hanging open. She raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure, Tenten?" When she nodded, he shouted. "YES!” And pulled her into a crushing hug.
"Lee!" her voice was muffled by his chest. "LEE!" she shouted and he released her. "We
won't be long if you do that too much. Good grief."
His look of horror had her backpedaling. "Nono! Not really. Calm down!"
He shook his head. "Parents?" He sat on the ground and pulled her down with him. He stared hard at her belly as if he could see it grow.
"Lee!" She poked him in the ribs. "You can't see anything yet."
"Yes, I knew that." He looked at her. "Now what?"
"We get married, that's what."
"Okay." That was all, and that was typical Lee.
She shook her head and laughed. "I should have known better. Let's eat lunch, I'm starving." Lee looked at her funny again. She rolled her eyes. "I didn't eat breakfast, remember?"
He had the grace to blush. "I am sorry, Tenten. I am just not sure what to do."
She smiled at him, leaned over and kissed him on the lips. "Does that help?"
"Not really. But I would not mind if you did it again." He smiled.
A few yards away, Chouji was cradling Ino in his lap as they discussed plans of their own. "Ino, you really should go back. "
She glared at him. "I'm not doing this Chouji." She shook her head. "Sakura says I'm fine, there's no danger to the baby."
He sighed and considered her. "Okay, okay. Just…be careful." He cuddled her close. "And, I guess if I'm being honest, it's not just about the baby."
She raised an eyebrow at him. "Okay, okay, I don't want you anywhere near those guys. But, you're good, and I'll simply have to trust in that."
She laid a hand on his cheek. "Thank you." She kissed him, then.
Kakashi looked from one couple to the next as they sat and ate their lunch. It struck him awfully coincidental that all of the guys that these women would choose - except for one, would have been conveniently unavailable. He glanced over at Sakura where she bent over her rice ball. She wasn't eating much of it, picking at it piece by piece.
Had her choice been planned out, too? He was gone when Genma and Gai had gathered their teams and left. He couldn't believe that Tsunade would have set them up. He just couldn't accept that a relationship with Sakura would have been approved of, much less set up by her. Yet, he'd learned long ago that true coincidence was a rare thing.
With no answers forthcoming, he watched Sakura for another moment. "Are you okay?" He
asked her quietly.
She looked up at him. "Of course, why wouldn't I be?"
"Because it's not like you to not eat." He sent a pointed glance at the pieces of her rice ball in the cloth on her lap.
She shrugged. "I guess I'm not very hungry."
"Don't. " He said.
"What?" She moved one shoulder and stared at the remains.
"Don't lie, Sakura, it's unbecoming." As he was hoping, her head snapped up and there was annoyance in her eye. Annoyance at being caught, he thought. "You're too mature for that."
She sighed, wrapped up her lunch and put it back in her pack, taking her time to tie it carefully. He saw her composing herself and knew that whatever she said next wasn't all of it. "If you say anything to them, they'll kill me." When he nodded, she continued. "Ino and Tenten are pregnant."
He just stared at her a minute, it was almost comical. "Already? I thought last night was the first time." She gave him a look that told him she knew he wasn't that dense. "Okay. Why is that bothering you so much?" He was afraid he knew the answer to that. He wasn't sure how he felt about it. It couldn't have just been worry for them.
"I am not going to live in an apartment with Ino and Chouji and their kid. I've got to find another place to live." She smiled up at him, tried to laugh, but it was obviously forced.
Kakashi considered her a moment. That didn't quite ring true, either, but he couldn't put his finger on why. She wasn't quite steady. There were shadows under her eyes that, he thought, weren't completely a result of the active night they'd had. It struck him how much he loved her, how much he wanted to clear those shadows, make her smile. And it wasn't completely because, he was sure, he was the cause of them.
He raised a hand, brushed her cheek and she closed her eyes and leaned into his palm. Sakura was anything but a delicate blossom, but in that moment she looked ready to break. What the hell had he done? They loved each other, he knew that. But she deserved a lot more than him. His broken past, his age… She deserved light, not darkness. She deserved someone much younger,
someone who could give her the things he didn't know if he was capable of.
He leaned in and kissed her, lightly, softly, through his mask. She answered it with a softness of her own. "Sakura," he began, then paused. "I don't know what I'm capable of yet. I never thought I'd be here. " At her puzzled look, he smiled. "In love. I don't get close to people. I got close to you."
She was annoyed at herself for letting her thoughts play so vividly on her face. Not that it mattered much, he could obviously read her like one of his Icha Icha novels. She considered him, and mentally slapped herself around. If it was hard for her, how hard was it for him? She closed her eyes briefly, forced her emotions back under control.
"I love you, Kakashi. And I can be a patient woman." When he would interrupt, she put a finger on his lips through his mask. "Not too patient. Time is too precious for ninja. But it's only the morning after." She smiled then, genuinely, and leaned up to plant another kiss on him.
It was almost arousing, kissing through his mask. The barrier kept them from truly tasting each other, a tease of its own. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. They nibbled through the cotton, brushing lips, savoring the tension.
Someone behind them cleared their throat and they broke apart. Sakura blushed as bright as her shirt and stared hard at Shikamaru's shoes. "We might want to get going." He said quietly.
Kakashi nodded and, taking Sakura's hand stood up. "Let's go."
