They woke up the next morning in the same position they fell asleep in. Neji noticed the imprint of a button on Hinata’s face and chastised himself for not remembering to take his shirt off. Considering how red she’d been last night, though, just from their conversation, he doubted she could have handled him half naked. He’d have to work on that.
They broke camp and moved quickly to the border of the Land of the Rice Paddies. About two hours into their trip, they paused at the Valley of the End and took a minute to pay respect to the First and the original Uchiha where it was memorialized.
Genma addressed the group. “We’re going to have to be very careful now. We’re not in the Fire country and have no jurisdiction here. Tsunade would fight with the daimyo, but let’s not put her in the position. We’ll head to that first village,” he pointed to a small grouping of run-down looking buildings, “and see what we can find out. Jiraiya made contact here some time back and alerted the clan to Orochimaru’s real plans. Let’s hope they were successful in their efforts to clean up the area. However, I’m still not sure it’s wise for all of us to go into town at once.”
They moved closer to the town, staying off the road and moving from tree to tree. When they were still a few miles from the village, Genma again paused. “Stop here. I’m going to head into the village and see what I can find out. Lie low and don’t draw attention or get into any fights if you can help it. Again, don’t go off alone. I don’t need to tell you this.”
“Then why are you?” Tenten smirked.
Genma rolled his eyes, “because I’m the leader of this rag-tag band of miscreants and it’s my job to make sure you all get back in one piece. Or at least, as few pieces as possible so you can be sewn back together.” And with that he waved a hand and took off.

It didn’t take long to set up a camp again. “Seems like we’re doing more camping than anything else on this mission. I’m not looking for a fight or anything,” Tenten said quickly, “but good grief, I’d like to do something.”
“Me, too.” Hinata said, then blushed a little. She’d been thinking about just what she’d like to do, but it involved Neji being the only one there with her. She didn’t know exactly what happened, but if the other night was any indication…she forcibly pulled her thoughts to the present. “Well, we can have lunch and, if nothing else, train a little. I need to stretch, for sure.”
The girls took over, Tenten mostly watching, as they put together a lunch. Sai sat to one side out of the way and pulled out his sketch book and pencil. Neji took the time to take care of personal cleaning and he dragged Lee along with him.
“Hey, I was watching the ladies!” Neji just glared at him. “Uh, Tenten, I mean, I was watching Tenten!”
“That’s not why I was glaring at you. I need to clean up and I’m not supposed to go alone. While I’m sure I can handle myself, it does make a certain amount of sense. So you were elected.”
“Oh, okay, Neji.” Lee followed a bit more willingly.
Neji looked over his shoulder at Lee. “I’m sure Tenten wouldn’t mind if you cleaned up, too.” He smiled a bit to himself when the Junior Green Beast blushed.
“Hai, Neji. He began removing his weights and in a few minutes ran straight for the small pond and jumped into the water, splashing Neji.
“For goodness sake, Lee. We’re supposed to not draw attention to ourselves. I think they heard that splash back in Konoha!” Neji shook his head and slipped into the pond. He started scrubbing himself off quickly. The water was a bit cold, even if the weather was still very warm. He went under to rinse his hair and when he surfaced, Hinata was standing at the edge of the pond, her mouth hanging open and her face redder than he’d ever seen it.
“Hinata-sama?” He inquired. She keeled over. “Shit.” He said, and sighed.
The sight of me half naked makes her pass out. Great.
His inner self laughed. It’s this wonderful physique we have.
Yeah, right. Neji snorted. Kami help us if we ever get completely naked in front of her. I may end up making love to…. That thought brought him up short. If he didn’t change the path of his thoughts quickly, she’d be out for days after the view she’d get.
He dried himself off with his old shirt, then picked Hinata up and headed back to the camp, leaving Lee to finish up on his own. When he got back to camp, he looked at Tenten. “Your man is back at the pond alone. Apparently, the sight of my chest is too much for her.” He looked down at Hinata.
The girls giggled and Tenten headed, red-faced, to the pond. Ino pretended to be VERY interested in the food in front of her. Sai just looked confused.
He laid her down on his bedroll and quickly put a fresh shirt on. Sitting next to her, he touched her cheeks. “Hinata-sama, koishii, wake up…”

Her eyes fluttered open and she closed them in mortification. “I passed out, didn’t I?”
“Hai.” He sounded amused.
“It is not funny.” She took deep breaths. When she was sure her respiratory system was under control, she opened one eye to make sure he was wearing a shirt. He was just so beautiful without it. She doubted he’d want to hear that. “You know, you are the only person in the world still capable of making me blush and pass out, don’t you?” It was much easier to say that with her eyes closed.
“Do I, now? That shouldn’t be, Hinata-sama.”
“And for goodness sake, drop the ‘sama’. I no longer call you niisan.” She held her breath. It would mean he cared. It would show he loved her. Please say yes, please say yes…
He hesitated for less than a heartbeat. “If you would like that, I’d be happy to…Hinata.”
She let the breath out she’d been holding and looked up at him. He looked…she couldn’t figure out what the expression meant. She shook her head. “The food is ready. That’s what I was going to tell you.”
“Ah,” he said, and held out his hand to help her up. They ate quickly and cleaned up. Lee and Tenten went to a small clearing outside the camp and Neji and Hinata, the other direction.
She closed her eyes so that she could focus on stretching her muscles. She bent over, working on her leg muscles first, curving her back, and then her neck.

Neji watched her stretch and couldn’t ignore how graceful she made simple stretching exercises. When she opened her eyes and looked at him, he had an idea.
He stepped up behind her, his front to her back and guided her into the first stance of their Gentle Fist. “Follow my lead.” He said quietly in her ear. He held his arm up in front of him, palm out and she raised her arm with him. “Move with me.” He said, and they moved through each of the steps of their defensive maneuvers, turning it into more of a dance than defense. Their chakra flowed together and their bodies moved as if they were bound to each other.
They didn’t touch, but Neji felt every motion that she made, as if it were his own. When they finished, he turned her and they stood, staring at each other, breathing hard from the workout. He wrapped his arms around her, slowly, carefully. She laid her hands on his shoulders.
His lips brushed her forehead first, temple, cheek. He could still feel their chakra flowing together and it felt a bit like static, pulling them further in to each other. He grazed her jaw, chin, the tip of her nose.
Then, after the briefest of pauses, he took her lips with his. Just a touch, a feathery brush, the tiniest of samples. She responded with a quiet moan, her hands tightening, leaning, just a little, into him. He took that moment to deepen the kiss, suckling just a little on her bottom lip and she opened to him, tentatively touching his lip, then tongue.
Their lips formed a dance of their own, tongues clashing, they couldn’t seem to taste enough. He crushed her to him, she grasped his shirt, as if riding out a storm and the kiss deepened. They broke apart, gasping for breath and Neji kissed his way down her neck. He flicked his tongue along the sensitive spot just behind her ear before tracing the edge of it and then taking the lobe between his teeth.
Hinata’s hands found their way to Neji’s head and threaded her fingers through the thick hair. She moaned his name when his lips traced the edge of her collar. Back to her lips, he captured them once more, tasting her, loving her.
They pulled apart for a moment. Hinata tried to catch her breath, but couldn’t seem to remember how. All she wanted was Neji, more of him. More of his taste, more of his touch, just more.
“Neji! Hinata!” They heard Ino calling from the camp. Hinata closed her eyes and rested her head on Neji’s chest while she tried to get her breathing under control.
“Be…” Neji had to clear his throat. “We’ll be right there.” He called. Then whispered to her, “I don’t want to go anywhere.”
“Me either,” she said. He hugged her tight for a moment, kissed her forehead.
“Are you okay?” He asked. She nodded and stepped back. She looked up at him and took his hand and they walked back to camp.

Genma was waiting by the fire. “Well, the Fuuma clan is still in charge here. Hanzaki, the leader, was lost in a fight with some of Orochimaru’s supporters, but his niece was there. She said they’d heard of his…end, but there were still those in the area who were looking to get on his allies’ good sides. We are welcome to stay in the village during our investigation and I’m inclined to take them up on it. I don’t mind sleeping on the ground, but I’d rather not, if we have a choice. We could still be here for a while, and Sasame has some ideas on where we should start.”
There was a decided swiftness to the camp as they packed up and cleared the evidence of their stay. They met Sasame in front of a newly-constructed inn. “Welcome. This inn was recently built and hasn’t yet been opened to the public. You’re welcome to use it for your base. I would stick with the tea house at the end of this street for your food. We haven’t been successful at cleaning everything up yet, but that’s run by an older couple who were able, somehow, to escape the influences.”
The Leaf ninja followed Sasame into the inn and she showed them the future dining room that they could use and moved up. The inn had four rooms, so Genma and Sai volunteered to share one. Tenten and Lee said they could share one and Ino walked into a third. Neji took Hinata’s hand firmly and drew her into the fourth room.
Genma leaned out into the hall. “Take a few--” at this, he spared a pointed look at Lee and Tenten and at Neji and Hinata, “minutes to get settled and we’ll meet in the dining room to talk strategy.”

Sasame unrolled a map of the Land of the Rice Paddies and placed weights on the four corners. “We’ve seen very little movement since news of Orochimaru’s disappearance. However here,” she pointed to one area marked to the west of the village, “and here,” she pointed to a spot to the north, “were two of the biggest…um…labs.” She swallowed and took a deep breath. “This one,” she pointed to a third spot, one known entrance of the Sound Village, “we know was destroyed. We’ve been through there several times, and found nothing. I think those other two are your best bets for a place to start.
“There are other places, but those two are closest to here, and closest to the Fire border. If you’re looking for something that was taken from the Fire country, that is the closest place they could take it to.”
“Thank you, Sasame.” Genma smiled at her.
“Of course. Please, let me know if you need anything further.” She left them alone to discuss.
“I think there’s a good chance Kabuto left these two areas alone, but we have to check it out. Lee, you and Tenten go here,” he pointed west. “Hinata, Neji, you take this one.” He pointed to the spot to the north. “Sai, head east out of the village and take to the air, see if you see anything from there. I doubt it, but it’s worth a look. Report back here as soon as you know something. This is recon only. Do not engage, if you can avoid it, please.”
“Hai!” They each went their separate directions, Hinata and Neji moving swiftly to the northern end of the village.
“It looked to be only a couple of kilometers out, so hopefully, we can get there quickly. We should be able to see something soon.” They leapt from tree to tree, making good time.
It only took them a short time to reach the spot on the map. Activating Byakugan, they dropped to the forest floor and started inspecting the area. Neji stepped back and let Hinata investigate the immediate area. His Byakugan had a greater range than hers, but she saw much more of the minute detail than he ever could.
Hinata examined the ground, but saw no tracks that could be separated out and inventoried. She followed the muddled path for a few more meters before it stopped altogether. No tracks, then, she began searching for any other details. Nothing. Nothing stood out, no markings, no chakra signatures, no trace.
“Neji? I’m not seeing anything distinguishable. Either someone wiped the trail clean or there hasn’t been anyone here.”
“I don’t see anything, either. No chakra signatures anywhere. Even as far as I can go underground, there’s nothing. I don’t think this area is used any more. Let’s head back.” They both jumped to the nearest tree and were back in the village in no time.
* * *
“Lee and Tenten think they found something. I knew I should have split you guys up, sent one with Lee and one to the other, ah, well. Anyway, head over there. There should still be time to check it out before night fall. I haven’t heard back from Sai yet, but I expect he’s being very thorough.”
Lee led them west through the streets of the village and into the forest. They took to the trees and it didn’t take them long to find the spot again. Hinata sent chakra to her feet and landed above the grass to begin her search. Neji and Lee stayed in the trees and Neji started his search from up there.
Hinata found four separate sets of tracks. She separated Lee’s and Tenten’s tracks from the other two. Both were fairly large men, one of them carrying something heavy. She followed it to a large tree where, like the muddle of confused prints up north, it just stopped. She could see no sign that they turned away, saw nothing to indicate that they may have camped there, no clues at all. She turned back to Neji and Lee. “Anything, Neji?”
He searched the area very carefully. “There was someone here recently, but their signatures vanish right where you stopped, Hinata.”
“This is weird.” Lee commented. “Have you ever seen such as this?”
Neji shook his head and Hinata concurred. “This is definitely a new one for me.”
“Let’s go talk to Genma.”

Back at the inn, their leader didn’t seem too happy. “Well, I guess it was too much to ask that our first leads give us what we want. Though, I haven’t given up on them, yet. There’s something there, but it’s too late to do more tonight. Sai also spotted a few interesting places to the east. Here –“ he pointed to one spot about two kilometers out, “and here.” This one was another two beyond that. “They both look rather promising. Get some sleep, we’re going to start early.”
