Chapter Ten
Sasuke sat down and buried his face in Gaara’s hoodie for a moment.
“Kakashi, can I ask you something about the rules here first?”
Kakashi smiled while listening to the open quality in
Sasuke’s voice. Maybe most people wouldn’t
have realized the differences, but for Kakashi who had been talking to Sasuke
every day since he had arrived it was plain as day. “What do you want to know, Sasuke?”
Sasuke sighed and looked up from Gaara’s hoodie. “What are the rules concerning dating other
patients?”
Kakashi chuckled. “The same as friends.
You can’t go back to your room together, but whatever you feel like
doing in front of others is fine.
Kissing is allowed, no groping of any other nature though.”
Sasuke smirked. “So I
could date Gaara and it would be okay?”
Kakashi raised an eyebrow.
“I heard the two of you were getting close.” He nodded.
“I think you might be good for each other.”
Sasuke nodded and sighed.
“You know what I’m sick of?
People thinking that I’m going to become Itachi. I know Itachi has problems and I won’t ever
be Itachi.” He sighed and rubbed his
arms. “I get scared a lot. I feel like I’m never going to be allowed to
stand on my own two feet. When things
get really bad, I feel like I just retreat into my mind and I hide there until
it’s safe again.” He shook his
head. “But that’s silly isn’t it? Doesn’t everyone hide when things get
scary? I’m just being a spoiled brat
like everyone else.”
Kakashi shook his head.
“Sasuke, I’ve seen a lot of spoiled brats come through here. I can tell you that you aren’t one of
them.” He leaned back in his chair. “What do you mean you hide until you feel
safe again?”
Sasuke shrugged. “You
know, the usual.
I move back into my own head and just float through life til I can cope again.”
He chewed on his lower lip a minute.
“It’s like being in a fog, you know.
I can see everything around me and hear it, but I’m not really part of
it. I make the motions, but it’s not a
conscious act.”
Kakashi nodded. “Thank
you for telling me, Sasuke.” He
smiled. “I’m not supposed to do this
really, but you and Shikamaru seem to have captured special places in the
hearts of your respective administrators.”
He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out the album he had bought
for Sasuke earlier in the week. It was a
gift for when Sasuke reached this point in his treatment. “If you have it already, we can go exchange
it. I just wanted you to know how much
it means to me that you’ve made this progress.
I know it was hard for you.”
Sasuke reached across the desk and took the offered CD. He smirked.
“Did you know I was gay before you got this?”
Kakashi chuckled.
“The Buzzcocks were one of the first punk
bands I fell in love with. A Different Kind of Tension was the
first album I bought with my first ever paycheck. It’s sappy, I know, but I wanted to share it
with you.”
Sasuke nodded and ran his fingers across the CD cover. “You have it on album?” Kakashi nodded. “Think when I finally get out of here I can
come over and listen on vinyl? It’s
always so much better listening that way.”
Kakashi smiled.
Sasuke had quickly become like a son or brother to him, and he would do
right by the boy. He would be a role
model who didn’t always treat him like the past-tense of his brother. “We’ll talk about that when the time comes,
but I’d like it.” He cleared his
throat. “I know the Nara’s asked if they
could take you out to the movies. You
should ask your father, but I believe it would be beneficial again.” He sighed.
“Try to give him a chance, Sasuke.”
Sasuke nodded tensely and his fingers gripped the CD case
hard enough to go white-knuckled. “I can
try. I want that relationship you know,”
he sighed.
Kakashi nodded. “I
know, Sasuke.” He smirked. “Gaara’s making good progress upstairs. He’s not even close to ready to be released
down here, but he’s making progress.
Take care of him the way you do Shikamaru, all right?”
Sasuke smiled at the mention of Gaara and tightened the grip
on his hoodie.
“I will, Kakashi.” He
smiled. “I’ll let you know what my dad
says.” He pushed Kakashi’s door open and
went to his room where he put Gaara’s shirt down and curled up on the bed to
rest.
*************
Kotetsu sighed as Izumo wrapped his arms around his
waist. “I’ve only got another 20 minutes
before break is over.” He leaned over
and kissed his long time crush turned boyfriend. “I’m glad I could tell you things went well
with Gaara’s transfer.”
Izumo nodded against Kotetsu’s
chest. “Me too. Gaara’s like a son to me, and I’d do anything
to help him. Naruto’s happier when
Gaara’s doing well. He takes his
friend’s pain so much to heart that I was worried about him when Gaara first
started having episodes.”
Kotetsu nodded and tightened his arms around his
boyfriend. “Gaara’s got a special place
in my heart and Shizune’s too.” At ‘Zumo’s
questioning look, he added, “She was Gaara’s nurse on the high risk
floor.” He snorted. “I used to drive her crazy talking about the
guy I always wished I could get but that was hopelessly straight.”
Izumo chuckled and kissed Kotetsu’s
neck. “You thought I was hopelessly
straight?”
Kotetsu nodded.
“Well, with you being married and all it’s really not that crazy of an
assumption.”
Izumo stroked Kotetsu’s cheek gently. “No, I suppose not.” He leaned down again to kiss Kotetsu’s neck. “I’m
glad someone could talk reason into you.”
He nuzzled his boyfriend’s neck.
“When are the patients allowed daytrips?”
Kotetsu giggled before moaning as Izumo nibbled over his
earlobe. “On low risk,
and not a day before.”
Izumo smiled before he licked Kotetsu’s
ear. “I want you, Ko.” He sighed.
“I know you have to go back to work though.” He straightened up Kotetsu’s
uniform. “I want to take Gaara out to
celebrate when he gets that far along.
Do you think anyone would object since he’s not my son?”
Kotetsu sighed sadly as he stood and lost his boyfriend’s
embrace. “You’ll have to get permission
from his sister, but otherwise, no.
Since he and Naruto are obviously such good friends, no one will
complain.”
Kotetsu brushed his lips softly against Izumo’s
before heading back out. “I have to get
back to work, and you have to get back to school.” He nuzzled his boyfriend’s neck once more
before pulling away completely. “Have
dinner with me at my place tomorrow? Raido and I were going to have boys’ night out, but his
daughter got sick.”
Izumo nodded.
“Okay. I’ll get something set up
for Naruto and then come over around 7.”
He smiled and waved before walking out to his car.
**************
Pein sighed. It had
been a couple weeks since Konan was released and she hadn’t been back. He really had thought she might be different,
but apparently she was just like everyone else.
He watched Sasuke from across the room.
Sasuke had been even more quiet and reserved since Shikamaru had been
taken upstairs. Maybe he could approach
the boy, nicer this time, and make a new friend.
He walked cautiously and quietly toward where the boy was
sitting. “Sasuke,” he said almost
meekly. He wasn’t the bully or pursuer
from before. “I was wondering if I could
talk to you,” he said when Sasuke raised an eyebrow in his direction.
Sasuke closed his book and nodded. “I’m due upstairs in a bit. They are releasing Shikamaru back to low-risk
today, but I’ve got a few minutes.” He
had promised Kakashi he’d try to be more open to other people and new
situations.
Pein closed his eyes and sat down next to Sasuke. “I wanted to apologize for my attitude toward
you and Shikamaru. I drive distance
between people on purpose.” He sighed
and looked at his hands. “I think most
of us have a real reason to be here. I
hate acknowledging mine though. It’s
better to just say that I’m a run away and leave it there.”
Sasuke frowned.
“What’s so bad that you want to pretend it doesn’t exist?”
Pein smirked before whispering, “Pot. Kettle.” He shrugged.
“Easier life that way. If you don’t say something is wrong then
nothing is wrong. Life will continue on
as expected.” He sighed. “I just never really got along with anyone,
you know? My dad thought I was a freak
for the way I look. His friends wouldn’t
accept me and the street kids knew I was rich and wouldn’t take me either. I always ended up in fights. I just figured if I started them and acted
the complete ass, at least my feelings couldn’t be hurt.”
Sasuke closed his eyes before shrugging and standing
up. “You wanna
go outside? It looks really nice out.”
Pein nodded and stood as well. “What are we going to do?”
Sasuke smiled. “Nothing.” He
smirked. “My favorite thing
to do in the afternoon is laze away under a tree and do nothing. I don’t think. I don’t read.
I just sit and close my eyes and relax, but not sleep. Just nothing.”
Pein smiled tentatively.
“That sounds nice.”
Sasuke grunted and motioned Pein to the tree. He might not like the guy a lot, but he knew
that people had problems. If he was
telling the truth about hiding from his problems, Sasuke could understand that
all too well.
***********
Shikamaru smiled at Tsunade as she handed him back his
belongings. “Keep looking for new
treatments for me.”
Tsunade laughed and smacked Shikamaru’s arm
affectionately. “Don’t come up here
again.” She smiled softly and hugged him
tightly. “I hate that I can’t do
anything for you when you want so much to be better.”
Shikamaru shrugged when she let go of him. “Seems to be the way life goes. The people who want to try and make something
of themselves get the short end of the stick.” He paused for a second. “I’ve just got to try and remember there are
people who have it worse than I do.”
Tsunade sighed and nodded.
“It’s a good place to start.” She
handed Shikamaru a book. “This is a good
place to go too. I know we haven’t really
done the journal thing before, but I’d like to do it now. I got this for you and it’s just yours. You write down anything you want. I think it might help us if I have a look
into your brain.”
Shikamaru laughed softly.
“It’s not really a fun place to look.”
He smirked and sighed. “I get to come visit Gaara, right?”
Tsunade smiled. “Yes.
He’s got his friend Naruto who comes almost every day as you know, but I
know he’d go nuts without you and Sasuke around.” She smirked and nudged Shikamaru lightly. “Sasuke and Gaara got together, didn’t they?”
Shikamaru sighed. “God, troublesome woman.
Leave them alone.” He shook his
head. “This is why I’m going for a man.”
Tsunade smiled.
“You’re finally going to tell Chouji that you love him.” She sing-songed at
him, “You think he’s sexy.”
Shikamaru threw his hands in the air. “I don’t know why I deal with you,
woman.” He headed out the door. “I’m going to say goodbye to Gaara. You want to come with me so you’re
technically not letting me break rules by entering another patient’s room
without permission?”
Tsunade shook her head.
“I’ll just wait outside the door.
I know you’ll behave yourself.
Besides, I trust Gaara with you.
He won’t break you.”
Shikamaru rolled his eyes before going to the room next to
his. He plopped down on the bed next to
Gaara. “So, I’m out today. I’m sure you knew that, since I’ve been
talking about it forever, but I thought I’d say it again.”
Gaara sighed and frowned.
“I know. It sucks. I want you to stay here.” He sighed and looked at his new friend. It was weird to consider he had more than one
friend. In his short stay at Konoha
Institute, he had tripled his friends.
What did that say about him? “I
don’t really want you to have to stay up here.
I guess I wish I could just go with you, but I know I’m not ready for
that yet.”
Shikamaru put his hands on Gaara’s shoulders. “Just stay with it, Gaara. Tsunade is an awesome doctor. Put her together with Kotetsu, Jiraiya, and
Kakashi, and you’re going to be fine.
Hell, I’d be fine if I could get one some meds that didn’t totally fuck
me over.”
Gaara lips twitched at the corner in a small smile. “I’ll miss having you around all the time,
but you’ll be visiting a lot right?”
Shikamaru nodded.
“I’ll be up every single day at 2.
You won’t be able to get rid of me and in a few weeks you’ll be
wondering why you ever decided to befriend me.”
Gaara shook his head and smiled sadly. “No.
That is one thing I’m sure I will never, ever do. You are my family. I have so few friends and because of my
disease my trust is so hard to gain that by the time you’ve gained the status
of friend you are family. That’s why
there’s only been Naruto. He’s like a
brother to me and I’m so glad that he’s been there for me and stayed with me
through all of this.
Shikamaru nodded. “I
know what that’s like. It’s how I felt
about your boyfriend when I first met him.
Granted we’ve only known each other a few months, but I could just tell
right away that he wasn’t just another self-righteous asshole like the rest of
that floor. Trust me when you get down
there you’ll know what I mean.”
Gaara nodded. “I’m
glad you’re better again. I’ll see you
tomorrow. You’re bringing Sasuke,
right?”
Shikamaru chuckled at his friend’s uncharacteristic
nervousness. “Yeah, he’ll be wanting to come with me anyway, but Kakashi confirmed it
for me.”
Shikamaru waved at the door as he left the room. “Lead on my fearless leader!” he mock saluted
Tsunade.
Tsunade batted him playfully on the arm before taking him to the stairs to meet
Kakashi. She looked at her silver-haired
coworker. “He’s all yours.” She smirked.
“He’s been taking the piss out of me all fucking day, so I don’t mind
handing him off to you.”
Kakashi crinkled his face in a smile. “Yeah, that sounds like my Shikamaru.” He winked at the boy. “Let’s get you back downstairs.” He shook his head. “Sasuke seems lost without you, but
apparently your scheming to get Gaara and him together
paid off for his progress.”
Shikamaru laughed.
“Good. I’m glad it helped. Look, I’m ready to get out of here. Can we save the banter for later? Good yes?”
Kakashi held up his hands and gestured toward the door. Shikamaru went down first and when he opened
the door to the low risk floor found himself with an armful of Sasuke. “Don’t you ever go away again! This floor sucks without you,” he mumbled
into Shikamaru’s chest.
Shikamaru frowned. “I
can’t promise anything, but you know I won’t try to get taken away.” He smiled.
“You’re coming with me to the movie, right?”
Sasuke sighed. “I
haven’t asked my father yet. I haven’t
worked up the courage to call him.”
Shikamaru hugged his best friend and kissed the top of his
head. “Give me some time to get settled
back in and we’ll call him together later tonight.”
*****
Gaara smiled at Naruto.
“You seem different today, Gaara.
For one, you’re smiling.” Gaara
shrugged and turned to look out the window where Sasuke and Shikamaru were
laying under the tree together. Naruto
followed Gaara’s gaze and smirked when he saw the two boys under the tree. “Which one?”
Gaara jumped a bit. “What do you mean
which one?”
Naruto pouted. “Gaara! You can’t hide this kind of thing from your best
friend! It’s so unfair!” He crossed his arms over his chest and
deepened the pout.
Gaara chuckled softly and shook his head. “The one with shorter black
hair.” He smiled and waved when
he saw Sasuke wave to him in greeting.
“I sort of kissed him a week ago.”
Naruto’s jaw hit the floor.
“What?!”
He pulled Gaara back into the common room. “What do you mean you kissed him?”
Gaara blushed the tiniest little bit of pink but Naruto
noticed. “He’s my boyfriend,” Gaara
whispered.
Naruto’s smile could have lit the entire floor by
itself. He wrapped his arms around his
friend and spun them around and around.
Gaara couldn’t help himself; he was laughing by the time Naruto set him
down. “Yes, and don’t you dare tell
Temari about this development yet or Kankuro.
They’ll want to meet him. I don’t
want him to meet my fucked up family yet.”
Naruto shook his head.
“You say that like he doesn’t have a fucked up family. Come on, Gaara. You know everyone’s family has something weird. I’ve got my dad – who isn’t a biological
parent – that is gay for his best friend and has been for years but pretended
with my adoptive mother that he was very much in love with and not just a good
friend who wanted to be something more because that was the socially acceptable
thing to do. Now my dad is dating said
gay guy and my parents are divorced. I
mean, how do you explain that to a potential date?”
Gaara nodded. “Fair enough.” He
sighed and looked down at Sasuke and Shikamaru.
“I’ve forgotten what the outside world is like, Naruto.”
Naruto shook his head.
“Drama queen.”
He smirked at Gaara’s half smile.
“You just miss your boyfriend.
What’s his name? Come on and give
me all the details.”
Gaara moved over the couch and sat down softly. “His name is Uchiha Sasuke. He’s wonderful in every sense of the
word. He is smart, obviously
good-looking, and he’s just the right amount of asshole. He’s the same as me in the trust department,
and I think he has as few friends as I have so I know he’s someone who values
people he lets into his world. He
normally just has fuckbuddies, but he told me
yesterday that if that was all I wanted, I would be disappointed.”
Naruto smiled. He
hadn’t seen Gaara so truly happy in a long time. While it stung just a bit that he couldn’t be
the reason his friend was feeling better, he didn’t really take it personally
anyway. He knew Gaara truly loved him
and enjoyed his company. Sometimes there
just wasn’t anything anyone could do. He
also knew this Gaara because this is what Gaara was like when they met. His meds were working then, like they were
now. This Gaara was the outward example
of the wonderful person inside Gaara that gets hidden away when the meds stop
working. “I’m just so glad you’ve got
something good in your life.”
A/N: Life is difficult these days, geesh! It is hard to

hopefully one more before I’m out. I
hope you enjoy the journey.
