every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird
please be save me I CRY

Chapter X There Is No Life Without Freedom
Sasuke watched his brother getting on with his morning-routine, all with a little smirk on his lips. While it was quite shameful to admit, he had never seen him look so pleased. Itachi never was one to admit and surrender to his feelings, always keeping up that cold front which effectively kept everyone at a distance. He had changed so much from his thirteen-year old self and Sasuke had spent many hours wondering what it could have been that had caused this. The frustrating thing was that it could be blamed on so many things and other factors he wasn’t even aware of since Itachi rarely told him anything. Was it the suspicious suicide of their cousin – Itachi had never shown any grief over it, even though they were very close – or the constant encouragements, or rather commands of their family to do better and excel more?
Sasuke had only realized how much pressure Itachi was under, had been ever since he entered the Academy, after he expressed his dislike for their clan and indeed, their clan was a far cry from a family. If you were mediocre, you were shoved in a corner, barely getting any attention and if you were good, you were relentlessly trained to get better and become a prize to be victoriously held up to the face of Konoha. It had always been his wish to be more like Itachi but after seeing the many sacrifices he had made, he was hesitantly giving up on that desire, hating himself for having to admit that in comparison, he would never even be noticed.
Itachi turned to him and it hurt to see that smirk immediately disappear and that cold mask back in place. “Yes, Sasuke?”
Sasuke tried not to fumble with his hands but being subjected to those eyes always held such an effect over him. “I’m sorry for attacking Neji.”
His brother lowered his head, starting to wrap his lower legs. “I’m not the one you should be apologizing to.”
“I’m not apologizing to him,” he heard being muttered and he dropped the roll of cloth, stalking over to Sasuke and thoroughly fed up with his childish behaviour although not a single emotion slipped through his well-crafted front. His tone of voice would suffice.
“Jealous that he got into ANBU Core at my recommendation?,” he silently said, straight in Sasuke’s ear. He moved along as his brother stumbled backwards until he was trapped with his back against a wall. But Sasuke had tested his patience enough. And soon he would be leaving all of this behind. “You’re spoiled, Sasuke and you know it is stopping you from getting better but still you choose to act as a child.” He lifted his head so they were face-to-face and found Sasuke with his eyes clenched tightly shut. His otouto, who had chased him around everywhere, eager to go wherever his aniki was going when they were younger was petrified of him.
“Next time you try to attack Hyūga Neji, I will force your eyes open and make you look at mine.” The threat hung heavily in the room and Sasuke breathed in sharply. It was no secret how advanced his Mangekyō had developed and what it could do – Susa-no-O still carefully shielded from anyone’s knowledge, he had made sure of that while briefing the Hokage – and the stories of some missing-nin screaming their lungs out as they were handed over to prison by Itachi. Sasuke never could have imagined he would be threatened to personally experience it. As in instinct, he pushed his hands forward and ran off the moment he had the freedom to do so.
Itachi stared after him and was convinced that the moment he and Neji were declared missing-nin, Sasuke would be the first to come chase after him. But to come and bring him back or to kill him, he couldn’t predict. He had only hoped that Sasuke wouldn’t come after him at all.

Shikamaru covered his head with his hands and groaned loudly. The annoying chatter of his class following him was loud enough to alarm every living creature in a 10km-radius but his brain annoyingly persisted in logically pointing out that such a thing was physically impossible with just twenty children. Never had his catchphrase seemed more appropriate.
“Ne sensei, why did you take us here? Can we fight here?” Misa asked, her eyes shining in excitement. Shikamaru lifted an eyebrow.
“No. I was told to bring you here to see an actual sparring-session.” And of course, this little plan had to take place on a day he taught at the Academy. Peering around him, he looked for two people who could take over his job since he really didn’t feel like fighting. His eyes widened as they spotted a sight he hadn’t been suspecting in the least. Waving at the children to stay put, he strolled over towards Neji and Itachi who were sitting on the edge of one of the training-fields, seemingly preparing to fight but Shikamaru saw their lips moving ever so slightly and he guessed they were discussing what to do. But why were they here together in the first place? Were they really planning on defecting after all?
“Oi Neji!” he said loudly in warning, not interested in overhearing their conversation. Neji turned his head and greeted him as he reached them. “What are your plans?” he asked bluntly. There was nothing on Itachi’s face betraying his surprise but Shikamaru did notice the faint touching of hands. Neji beckoned him closer to prevent others from overhearing and pretended not to notice Itachi’s glare but he stumbled backwards as a weight fell on him.
“Shikamaru, you idi-“ He sat up on his elbows to find a girl about twelve years of age in his lap, staring at him with enormous eyes and a deepening blush on her cheeks. Before he could do anything, two hands grabbed the girl and set her firmly back on her feet before the same was done to him and turned to find Itachi standing behind him slightly, vehemently glaring at the girl.
“Misa, what the hell were you doing?” Shikamaru sighed, already predicting what would follow. You put a girl who was just discovering the concept of hormones next to two of the most aesthetically approved people of Konoha and you get embarrassing scenarios. Misa was gaping at Neji and Itachi, lost to the world and Shikamaru patted her on the back of the head to snap her out of it. She reminded him of Naruto too often with her boisterous glee and overall loud presence. Neji and Itachi were rolling their eyes and Shikamaru noticed Neji faintly making hand-signals to him. He nodded his head slightly in understanding, the message clear but groaned as he remembered his class.
“You two don’t feel like sparring?” he said as he pointed to his students but Itachi shook his head curtly and turned away.
Neji lifted his eyebrows to affirm their meeting later on and Shikamaru sighed, nodding once more. A small smirk spread on Neji’s lips before following Itachi.
“Shikamaru-sensei, who are they? They look so cool!” Misa shouted, finally having snapped out of her stupor.
Shikamaru’s worry grew as he saw them disappearing between the trees, fairly certain that they had decided to defect. And if he guessed correctly, he would be the one ordered by the Hokage to set up a plan to get them back, dead or alive.
“No one. They’re no one,” he said softly, walking back over to his class.
“What have you told Shikamaru?” Itachi asked, acting unusually cold. Neji stopped himself from cringing, understanding why he was cross with him but he grabbed his hand and stepped in front of him so they were facing each other.
“I asked him what our options were and he said that one of them was to defect. I never mentioned Akatsuki and he won’t tell anyone else about our plans.” He let out a sigh as Itachi squeezed his hand briefly before pulling him further into the forest.
It did make sense that Neji had gone to Shikamaru to figure out his dilemma since the man was a strategic genius but had he been told the exact nature of their plans, it could have jeopardized their escape since he held a deep hatred against Akatsuki.
“Don’t take another risk like that. It’s already a lot harder to meet you with your fiancée following you like a bloodhound.”
“It wasn’t a risk,” Neji sneered. He felt anger creeping up at Itachi’s patronizing behaviour. He never had been one to take unnecessary risks and Itachi should know that better than anyone else.
“Our plan is so unexpected that no one will have considered it a possibility.” He saw Itachi’s shoulders tense and jerked him by their intertwined hands so they were looking at each other.
“You know I didn’t take a risk so why are you scolding me like a disobedient child!?” Itachi’s mouth corner lifted slightly and Neji threw his head away. “Stop it!” He turned on his heels and stormed off but was tackled to the ground and he let out a heavy breath as he was smothered between the earth and Itachi’s body.
“I don’t see you as a child, someone lower than me. I see you as my equal and I’ve proven you that enough times in the past two years.” Itachi was no longer grinning but only holding his gaze and as much as Neji wanted to stay mad at him, being straightforwardly told he saw him as his equal had the same effect as when Itachi said to him he loved him. He let his head fall back and rubbed his brow. Their lips touched briefly before he was pulled back on his feet, Itachi taking a dried leaf from out of his hair.
“Go see Shikamaru.” Neji nodded, gave him another quick kiss while pressing their bodies together and then disappeared in a whirl of smoke.
[-]
A light tapping sounded and he groaned, half-woken from his nap but not finding any motivation to get up. He simply waved his hand around and then heard the soft creak of his window opening.
“Is this how you always greet your guests? Sometimes I’m surprised so many people still like you with all your annoying habits.” Neji’s cool voice was hinted with sarcasm and Shikamaru smirked a bit, turning over so he could see Neji taking a seat in the comfortable sofa not too far from his bed.
“You’re really defecting?” he asked bluntly. Neji nodded. It was good to see him not affirming it with his head bent low and desperately avoiding eye-contact. He actually looked certain that this was what he wanted and frankly, that was all the confirmation Shikamaru needed to know that the final decision had been purely his and not too deeply influenced by Itachi, although the man’s involvement in the whole affair couldn’t be underestimated, on the contrary even.
Neji’s wellbeing mattered to him, although he would never express it in words. He just hoped he would be able to continue to look out for him after his and Itachi’s defection. It would be a madhouse once the news reached Konoha… Two prodigies, well on their way to going down in history for their talents, having turned their backs on their village.
“I don’t expect you to offer anyone an explanation after we’ve left. It’s not your job in any case.”
Shikamaru yawned, feebly covering his mouth. “If I had known how troublesome you’d become, I never would have let you become a friend. And I know it’s not my job but your families and the Hokage is going to want an explanation and I can tell them without any risk. ‘S not like I could have known you’d do such a crazy thing as defect the village.”
Neji let out a breathy laugh and Shikamaru attentively took in every detail. How his hands were nervously, constantly in movement, in stark contrast to his eyes which didn’t give the slightest hint of anxiety. “Are you really sure about this? I’ve told you the chances of surviving this. Itachi has a high chance but you… “
“It’s the only chance I’ve got to be with Itachi and I know that I won’t regret staying by his side , Shikamaru. Not ever. It is probably the stupidest thing I’ll ever do in my life because I have to leave everything behind and probably won’t even live longer than a few weeks.” Neji was careful to add the latter as to not rouse any suspicion. “But it’s better than a lifetime with that Kaoru.”
Shikamaru sat up and lit a cigarette. “It’s not choosing from the lesser of two evils, is it?”
“No, not at all. I’m just not willing to give up Itachi.”
“Anything you’d like me to tell your families?”
Neji’s laugh was now a lot more bitter. “They’ll probably end up the winners in this.” As much as he trusted Itachi, he couldn’t possibly put any faith in Akatsuki, in Madara’s word that he would grant them more freedom than they now had. Things would have been so much simpler if it hadn’t been for his curse-seal.
“Probably, yes.” Shikamaru’s painfully honest reaction didn’t even startle him anymore. In his mind he had gone over things, not finding the courage to voice his doubts to Itachi, the one who had already gone so far for him, trying to set him free. While he had hated being treated like a child by Itachi, he now felt as if he was treating him as such by letting him continue to believe that he had faith in their defection, that they would succeed, survive. But he never trusted Akatsuki, just couldn’t. Not the organization, people that had already ruined so much. Nevertheless, a few weeks of freedom was better than none at all. And he would forever be grateful to Itachi for taking such a risk for and with him. This went beyond simply risking your life to save your team-mate’s. This was love in its purest form. Near obsession.
“We’re leaving in three days. Hinata knows only about my relationship with Itachi. Be there for her if you can. And thank you for everything, Shikamaru.” He went to kneel deeply, as a sign of gratitude but was quickly pulled up and ended up in Shikamaru’s arms.
“Baka…” Shikamaru sighed, tightening the embrace before releasing him. It was hard to realize that this was probably the last time he would see Neji before his defection. He already prayed to the gods that he wouldn’t be in the team to track them down, although he knew better. “Be careful.”
Neji nodded. “Sayonara.”
Shikamaru waited until he had disappeared before sinking back down on the bed, releasing a shuddering breath. He couldn’t deny that seeing someone he considered a true friend leaving, and knowing fairly certain that the next time he would see him, it would be either to forcibly bring him and his lover back to Konoha or kill them both. Prodigies like that can’t just turn their back on their village and be left in peace.
[-]
Itachi let his eyes roam across his bedroom. It was the last time he would be here and although he wasn’t one for sentiments and hearty goodbyes, it did feel alien to realize this. But it also felt good. He would finally be able to leave his wretched family behind, the hypocrisy of this village. Akatsuki’s goals had always been made clear to him by Madara and no euphemisms had been used. Their goal was dominating all of the Countries, making everyone aware of how the petty wars that constantly broke out were useless. It was something he could understand and was willing to use his talents for. And of course there was Neji. Beautiful, skilled Neji. The reason why he had stayed years after Madara’s initial invitation to Akatsuki. It had been worth every second.
A soft knock sounded on his door and he slid it open. His mother gently smiled at him, making an actual effort to look him in the eyes. “Dinner is ready, Itachi-kun.” He nodded and grabbed his bag, closing the door behind him without another glance. His mother stopped him from going to the dining-room with a hand on his arm.
“Be careful on your mission.”
“Hai, okaa-san.” She gave him a kiss on his cheek and released his arm. It was such irony that in the last weeks that he was still in Konohagakure, his mother made such a tremendous effort to be kind to him and not be afraid of his eyes, unlike the rest of their clan. While he couldn’t fully respect her for her efforts, he did appreciate her more. It was nice to know that someone besides Neji honestly cared about him.
He kneeled at the table, nodding at his father and Sasuke and they all started to eat, no one speaking a word. His mother glanced every so often at her family-members with a sad and forlorn look and it made Itachi hate his father even more. She deserved better than this charade. But it was too late to change her world, to make her gather the strength to pursue her own happiness. Neji’s life and his own still came before hers.
He bowed, thanking her for the meal and tied his rucksack on his back. He heard someone following him outside and turned around. “I’ll be back in a week or so.”
His mother nodded but didn’t go back inside. Making a quick decision, he walked back to her and gave her a kiss. “Goodbye, okaa-san.”
“Goodbye, Itachi-kun.”
He sped out of the Uchiha-compound and found Neji waiting on a nearby roof, his mask hiding his face. Jumping up towards him, he turned the mask to the side and found that Neji’s eyes were occluded with tears. Not once did he feel offended by them, fearing that Neji regretted his decision. Neji had always been more attached to Konohagakure than he was. “Time to go.” He set both their masks in place and took Neji’s hand. Few things could compare to the ecstatic feeling of making those first steps outside of the village’s gates, knowing that he would never have to return here again.
“We’re free.” Neji tightened the grip on his hand in response. “Everything went well?” The question sounded so strange, since they had to pretend as if they were leaving on a genuine mission and not defecting the village, not being able to bid anyone a proper farewell, trying to give the few that deserved it a fair explanation. At least Shikamaru understood why they were fleeing, although he couldn’t help but cringe as he imagined him finding out that Itachi did have a plan to have his curse-seal removed and that it involved Akatsuki. By setting those first steps out of the village just now, they had both cut all bonds with the few people they cared about other than each other. They now only had each other to fall back on. Yet it didn’t appear frightening to Neji in the slightest. He had made the right decision, if only to have the upcoming few days together in feigned freedom.
[-]
They had been travelling for three days now and as more time progressed, Neji became more and more worried, realizing that he wasn’t ready to give up Itachi. He knew Itachi had noticed something was wrong and it wouldn’t be long before he would confront him with it. And he wouldn’t find it in himself to lie anymore. And Itachi would probably see it as a lack of trust in him. He hadn’t made a mistake by coming with Itachi, it hadn’t even occurred to him but they were voluntarily going to the Devil’s tramping ground. And few people survived that. Itachi would be welcomed with open arms but what about him? He was probably the “reward” they held in front of Itachi, to lead him to them and the moment they arrived at Akatsuki’s lair, he would be cast away. Who knows what Itachi would do then? He rubbed his napes in frustration, his own mind long past the point of making sense anymore.
“What’s going on with you?” Itachi tore off his mask and looked at him, the tomoe of his Sharingan spinning in anger. “You have barely said anything and you constantly turn your eyes away from me.”
The unspoken question was clear and Neji took off his own mask. “I don’t regret coming with you. I really don’t. I just… I find it impossible to believe that Akatsuki wants me to join as well.”
Itachi pulled him in his arms and buried his head against his shoulder. “Madara knows I won’t join without you and in time, you will prove your worth and make them realize they didn’t make a mistake by letting you join.” His words made perfect sense and Neji cursed himself for his own idiocy. In a way, he was indeed Itachi’s “reward” for joining but he should have remembered that from now on, wherever he went, Itachi followed.
“Next time, don’t make me confront you when something is troubling you. We can only trust each other, Neji. Remember that.” Itachi kissed him and pulled him along. “We’re almost there.”
Both were very tired after travelling nearly non-stop. Their mission only was supposed to last a week so they had a very short time-span to get to Akatsuki’s lair and get Neji’s seal removed. Itachi hadn’t been able to get them a mission that lasted longer, as he had initially intended.
“Oi, lovebirds!” someone shouted. They landed on a tree branch and were quickly joined by Hoshigaki Kisame, who grinned at Neji. “So gaki, finally decided to turn nuke-nin? A feisty thing like you is going to liven up Akatsuki.” Neji glared at being talked to so patronizingly, intensifying his dislike of the man.
“Let’s go,” Itachi softly said. Kisame nodded and ran north. Neji took in a deep breath and followed, Itachi close behind him.
[-]
Kisame slowed down and finally stopped. They had travelled at a brutal pace and Neji’s muscles had started to protest hours ago although he never voiced a single complaint. It would be madness to show any more weaknesses to someone he still couldn’t see as an ally.
“Here it is,” Kisame chuckled. Itachi quirked an eyebrow as he only saw a plane of grass and some nearby mountains and sent Neji a look, who quickly activated his Byakugan.
“It’s hidden in the ground.”
Kisame kneeled on said ground and placed the palm of his left-hand on a seemingly random place but what was probably far from unsystematic. Neji’s Byakugan only showed him sending a small burst of chakra about ten centimetres into the ground.
“Specific chakra that works as a key,” Itachi commented. Kisame grinned.
“It took Deidara-kun ages to figure it out.” He stood on his feet again and patiently waited as a strip of ground sunk lower into the ground, uncovering a passageway. “Hop in.” They followed Kisame into a dark hallway, Neji with his Byakugan activated. The further they went, the more amazed he became at the extensive lair. It had an intricate network of hallways and rooms, stretching metres and metres far. It seemed rather large for only six people. The air in the hallways felt oppressive and thick, making him want to turn back and run as far away from here as possible. But they finally were here. Hopefully Itachi’s logic reasoning held the complete truth.
After walking for nearly a full five minutes, Kisame stopped and turned to face them. “Too late to back out now, gaki.”
“You want me to destroy your Samehada completely this time?” Neji sneered. Kisame only let out a hearty laugh. It really would be amusing to have Neji among them, Deidara’s exuberance having long since started grating on his nerves.
Kisame motioned for them to enter the room first and Neji swiftly did so, all the while vehemently glaring at him. Itachi watched his lover briskly entering the room and stepped towards the man who Madara had said would be his partner.
“When is his curse-seal being removed?”
Kisame patted him on the shoulder, receiving yet another glare although he wasn’t in the least bit perturbed by it. “Right after the introductions, Itachi-san.”
They walked into the room, finding the Akatsuki-members there, all seemingly relaxed in their seat. And Madara, standing close to Neji and talking to him with a grin on his face. He walked over to them, wrapping his arm loosely around Neji’s waist. He would be lying if he said he didn’t like being able to make it clear they were more than team-members.
“Madara.”
“Itachi-kun. So we finally get the Hyūga you’ve been talking to me about for so long. He sounds promising.” It was clear that Neji hated being left out of the conversation but Itachi decided that he would have to stand up to the treatment then, as he had just moments ago with Kisame.
“So these are the new ones, un?” A man – his voice too deep to be mistaken for a woman’s – with long blond hair pulled Neji away from Itachi and unabashedly looked him up and down. “This one’s kinda cute!”
“Let me go, you bastard,” Neji hissed. He was too proud to walk back to Itachi since it would seem as if he couldn’t defend himself and pointedly looked this blond monstrosity in the eye.
“Kisame was right, you are feisty. But where are my manners? I’m Deidara, your new partner.” He bowed deeply but Neji suspected it was more to mock him than out of actual respect. The only good thing he could imagine about being partnered with him was that he was obviously a talented shinobi. No one in Akatsuki was mere mediocre.
“Deidara, there will be plenty of time to do this. There are more pressing matters, right Neji-kun?” Madara smirked at him and Neji only nodded.
“I liked you better when you were still posing as Tobi, un!” Deidara huffed. Madara shrugged, not caring in the slightest about the comment.
“How does the removal work specifically?” Itachi asked.
Neji briskly turned his head towards them, wanting to hear every word. What if Madara actually held true to his word and he would be able to live without his curse-seal? The thought seemed unimaginable, even as he was standing amongst the few persons in the entire world that had any clue on how to remove it.
“We focus the chakra of the demon-statue through his curse-seal as a sort of cleansing. The massive amount of new chakra in combination with a specific rite will ultimately render the curse-seal null and make it disappear. You will still have a small indentation on your brow but it’s barely noticeable. Overall, it will take about six hours. After that, it’s time for the real introductions. Now let’s go.” Everyone stood up and followed Madara out of the room, through the network of hallways until they reached a far greater one, the size of several training-grounds put together. The first thing Itachi and Neji noticed was the enormous statue against the northern wall. It had several bulges that trembled occasionally and Neji’s eyes grew slightly larger as an eye suddenly appeared. That’s what they were, nine eyeballs. One for each tailed beast. A pair of hands made out of stone stood up on the ground, fingers slightly spread. Some of the Akatsuki-members hopped onto them, one on each finger.
The energy in the room was almost overpowering and it suddenly became clear that Akatsuki might actually succeed in its goals. Madara beckoned them closer and instructed Neji to lie down between the hands.
“Itachi, come with me.” Itachi saw the worry on Neji’s face and crouched down beside him, swiftly kissing him in reassurance. Madara was standing in his designated spot already and pointed to the finger to his right, Itachi quickly taking his own place. He looked down at Neji and imagined how vulnerable he must be feeling, placing his life in the hands of the ones he had been taught to hate. He did feel pleased when he noticed how he no longer let any doubt surface on his features and was staring ahead in fierce determination, regardless of how he might be feeling inside. Madara was staring at Neji with the same expression he had used when he approached Itachi ten years ago. Neji should no longer fret about the possibility of being killed here; Madara was far too interested in him and his talents now.
“Let’s start. Itachi, follow my lead.” Everyone sat down, legs crossed and the index and ring-finger of their right-hand straightened, the standard positioning for when performing a ritual. They started singing a rite, Itachi only concentrating on his chakra-circulation and slowly, five of the statue’s eyes opened fully, chakra streaming through the fingers and feeding the people sitting on top of them. From now on, it was quite clear to Itachi what needed to happen.
“Focus on the centre of his curse-seal,” Madara said. It would be an intense six hours for everyone present. All of the chakra that was gathered in the statue and transmitted to them through the top of the fingers would have to be minutely redirected through Neji’s curse-seal, undoubtedly causing him a great deal of pain, before being put back into the statue. There was no room for mistakes but Itachi held little doubt that they would succeed. These were not the most wanted S-Rank missing-nin in all of the Countries for no reason.
Madara started and everyone then followed his lead. Itachi saw Neji cringing as the first bits of chakra entered his curse-seal and visibly clenching his jaw as the other Akatsuki-members sent even more.
As much as Itachi was tempted to go help Neji when he started screaming his lungs out in pain, he needed to keep focusing. It’s going to be a long six hours.

Someone jerked open the door to his room and he saw Itachi storming in, his mouth a fine line and his Sharingan spinning madly. “Take me to Madara,” he said, his tone so cold that if he had been any less of a man, he would have shivered.
“What’s going on?”
“Neji still hasn’t woken up. He was right, Madara did want to kill him.”

Nanaka19: Thank you for the review! Itachi can be sweet and say ‘I love you’, he just needs to be motivated for it. XD
Jade Rose: Thank you so, so much for your kind words. The saddest part about Sasuke’s characterization in this story is that I can so easily imagine him actually doing it (hence why I put it in the story). And ItaNeji is to me one of the most beautiful pairings in Narutoverse. =)
silverfox – AkatsukiYaoi: Thank you for the review!
DarlingCurse: Thank you, thank you, thank you!
