Chapter Nine
This had to be some kind of nightmare. It just had to be. Yeah, it was a nightmare and when he woke up, he'd see his daughter trying to cook breakfast again. No one had taken his daughter, this was just some kind of weird paternal nightmare.
Who the hell was he trying to kid?
Naruto fought back tears as he sat in the rocking chair that sat in his daughter's room, seeing that everything had been left the way it was the night she had been taken. Every available shinobi had been searching for the past two weeks with no avail and already the rumors were spreading that he had killed his daughter and buried her body in some undisclosed location.
He looked up when he heard someone stop at the window, seeing that it was Kakashi. "Naruto, we have a lead." Kakashi said calmly. "Lady Hokage wants to see you in her office now."
Kyuubi roared in anger, fighting against the bars that held him captive. Someone had taken his kit and now he was being blamed for it?! If he could only break free, he'd show those pompous assholes what he thought about it!
Snarls left the fox demon's lips as he paced in his cage, every single one of his tails violently hitting the walls. If the damned blonde listened to him, they would have already found their kit but no, he had to listen to that damned woman's orders! He had to stay within Konoha's walls, trying to think of everybody who would want to do them harm.
Heh, that list was quite a list in itself. Sasuke, Orochimaru, Kabuto, the Akatsuki, rival shinobi that they had fought, various people whose plans had been destroyed because of them... the list went on and on if the woman wanted names! "NARUTO!" Kyuubi shouted, pulling the blonde into the seal.
"If you're going to yell at me, don't. I won't harm any of the villagers for those rumors." Naruto answered.
"I could honestly care less what you want to do." Kyuubi snarled. "The fact remains that the kit is missing and I'm royally pissed about it!
"And I'm not?!"
"You're letting the old hag tell you what to do and what to think so I'm telling you what I think. This was obviously planned from the first moment it became obvious that she was going to be our kit." Kyuubi informed the blonde. "We were careful not to let anybody know of her existence, even keeping that knowledge away from Shukaku's former vessel until he came here for a visit. Your friends understood the necessity to keep her existence secret, so they would not have spoken a word about her outside of this village."
"Somebody planned this?"
"Killing two birds with one stone, I'd say. They get rid of both you and the girl. Remember, many view your existence as meaningless and they view Mahina as nothing more than a freak of nature. Whoever let Mahina's connection to you leak out obviously wanted to get rid of you both. Now, how many people do we know that have tried before to destroy you?"
"You don't think that it's-"
"-the Akatsuki wants to make a trade. Naruto for Mahina."
Those bastards! "Then we'll go after them!" Naruto shouted. "God only knows what the hell they're doing to my daughter!"
"Naruto, think about this for a minute. They want you so they can take Kyuubi and kill you!" Tsunade said sharply. "There's no promises they'll hand Mahina over once they have you. She's still a child-"
"She's probably terrified!"
"-and they can still make her believe that they're the only ones that even care about her! If they get you both, then anybody who stands in their way will be killed!"
Naruto sat down, his shoulders slumped in defeat. "Then I won't let them catch me, but they sure as hell aren't keeping my daughter." Naruto said as he looked at Tsunade.
Tsunade felt a chill of fear go down her spine, seeing that Naruto's blue eyes now contained flecks of red. Kyuubi was pissed as hell too, his angry chakra working its way into the blonde's system. The longer the little girl was out of the village and in harm's way, the greater the chance would be that Kyuubi would take over the blonde. As much as she hated the idea of sending the blonde out, she knew she had no choice. Either she let him go willingly, or he went on his own without permission. "Very well. Here's the place where you're to meet them." Tsunade said as she handed over the scroll. "You'd better come back, Gaki, or else there'll be trouble."
Naruto nodded slightly as he read the note, inwardly snarling. He'd cause trouble, all right, but it wouldn't be for Konoha. Those bastards were going to pay dearly for messing with him and his daughter. If he found even one hair out of place on her head, he was going to kill them slowly and let Kyuubi savor their deaths.
That much he promised.
There were instincts that he supposed never truly died and the instincts he had acquired since he became an older brother were one of those instincts. Itachi was silent as he watched the little girl, seeing that she had finally stopped crying. She still clung frantically to Naruto's jacket, taking in his scent. By now, Itachi was certain that Naruto's scent was fading away.
He frowned as he remembered Deidara's attempt at taking the jacket away from the child, witnessing the blonde haired male being thrown through three walls. He had barely even laid a finger on the jacket before an unseen force threw the fully grown male away from the child. Pein had been pleased at the display of power, but the child's display had done nothing more than make Itachi nervous. When she looked at them, it was as if she were staring into their souls and reading their weaknesses.
He couldn't explain how or why, but the child knew when they intended on doing something to make her bend to their will. She somehow knew when they were going to attempt to make her talk, who was going to be keeping an eye on her to ensure she wouldn't escape. If Itachi hadn't known for certain that she wasn't a Jinchuuriki, he would have sworn that it was a demon telling her.
No, she was something else... something more dangerous than anything. Somehow she had managed to get one of the most feared and powerful of all Bijuu to bend to her will. Somehow she had gained the nine-tails' favor and they were playing with fire. Once the blonde got there, he knew full well that they'd be killed. By now he was probably insane with fury and no one other than his daughter would be able to soothe him.
He needed to get the girl out of there.
Itachi was silent as the little girl looked at him, her gentle blue eyes reddened from her tears. She was afraid, but she wouldn't let them control her. "Come." Itachi stated calmly. "You're leaving."
"You're going to hurt Daddy." Mahina stated, speaking for the first time since they arrived.
"I'm not doing anything." Itachi informed the girl. "Now let's go."
Putting Naruto's jacket on, the little girl quietly followed Itachi. If he tried anything, she knew she could kill him. He wasn't useful outside of this bad place so the moment he tried anything, he would die.
They all would.
Naruto felt everything around him fading away, determined to hunt down his daughter's kidnappers. He knew full well that a few shinobi had been sent to make sure he didn't hurt any innocent people, but he didn't care. They were miles behind him now since he was running purely on Kyuubi's chakra.
The blonde knew that there were at least four chakra tails following him now, but he didn't care. Instinct told him to find his child and protect her from harm. Right now, he was running on that instinct and that one instinct was telling him where to go. Hold on, Hi-Hi, Daddy's coming. Just be brave for a little while longer. Naruto thought desperately.
Mahina stared quietly at Itachi for a minute, trying to determine what game he was playing. "You have five minutes to get as far away as you can." Itachi stated calmly. "If I find you, I will kill you."
The little girl stared at him for a moment before stepping back, turning around and running as fast as she could. She needed to find somewhere safe to wait until someone from Konoha found her. If she could do that, then she'd be able to go home and back to her family. She missed them terribly, wishing she hadn't been such a pain to her babysitters whenever Naruto couldn't spend time with her. She promised, if she could go back to Konoha she'd be good for whoever Naruto said was going to watch her. She'd even behave for Anko if she could go home!
How long she ran, the little girl wasn't sure. She finally stopped and sat down on a fallen tree, curling her fingers tightly and putting her fists near her face as she began to cry.
Kankuro scratched his head as he walked silently, grateful that his delivery mission was over with. Seriously, any idiot could have delivered a scroll but he supposed that since it was a very important one, Gaara didn't want to trust anybody other than his own flesh and blood with it. As soon as he got back to Suna, he was going to soak in some nice warm water and relax.
The brunette froze when he heard the sound of a child crying, wondering for a moment who exactly would have left their kid alone. The nearest village was about ten miles away and even that village was almost completely abandoned. No one in their right mind would have wanted to go there for any reason.
He followed the sound of the crying, freezing when he saw a little girl wearing an obviously too big orange jacket sitting on a log with tears rolling down her face. He recognized the jacket, seeing the familiar swirl. That was Naruto Uzumaki's jacket. Why the hell did a kid have it? Was the blonde somewhere nearby? "Hey there." Kankuro said carefully.
A gasp left the little girl's lips, fear flashing in her eyes as she quickly stood up and took a step back. "Hey, it's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." Kankuro said gently as he knelt down. "Where's your momma?"
Mahina looked at the stranger, seeing that he was wearing a headband. Naruto had drawn pictures of the different headbands, showing her which ones were allies. The picture on the man's headband matched the one that Naruto said were Konoha's friends. The man was from Suna. That meant she could ask him to take her there so the Kazekage could send her grandma and daddy a letter telling them where she was! "She's dead." Mahina answered, her voice soft as tears began gathering in her eyes. "Can you help me? I don't know where I am or where Daddy is. He says if I get lost, I have to stay put but he told me one time that if I get lost away from home and he can't find me, I have to find a friend."
Damn it, why did he have to have a soft spot for kids? "Okay, sweetie. What's your name?" Kankuro questioned.
"Uzumaki Mahina. I'm from Konoha. Can you help me?"
Uzumaki? The only other Uzumaki he knew was Naruto, but that was impossible. If the blonde had ever had a kid, then he must have sired her when he was twelve or thirteen, fourteen at most. It didn't matter to him who her father was, all he knew for certain was that she was wearing Naruto's jacket and was from Konoha. "Yeah, I'll help you. Come on, we're closer to Suna and you look like you could use a decent night's sleep." Kankuro answered gently.
With a chocked sob, Mahina threw her arms around Kankuro's neck. Kankuro closed his eyes as he picked her up, gently stroking her hair in an attempt to soothe her tears. How the hell did Temari get kids to stop crying again? Oh, right, she rocked them and hummed until they stopped.
The brown haired shinobi didn't move until the child's sobs had stopped, her breaths deep and even as sleep overcame her. Without saying a word, the man began walking towards Suna, wondering exactly what the hell he was going to tell Gaara.
He had wondered how long it would take before Naruto found him.
Itachi stared calmly at the blonde, seeing that his eyes were now red from Kyuubi's chakra. "Where's my daughter?" Naruto demanded.
"No clue. I set her free yesterday and haven't seen her since." Itachi stated calmly. "If you're lucky, she hasn't been discovered by my foolish little brother."
"You're lying!" Naruto shouted.
"No, I didn't want her near me anymore." Itachi answered coolly. "I despise that look in her eyes, the one I'm sure she makes when you're nearby. Every secret you've ever kept feels as if they're available for her to see."
Naruto froze, having prayed that he was the only one who had ever seen that look. Many of Konoha's shinobi were nervous around the girl, he knew, but none of them had thought anything of it. None of them could ever explain why they felt so nervous other than the feeling that there was something extremely dangerous about the child.
The blonde knew that he could have taken care of the missing-nin, but his concerns were mostly on Mahina. If she was alone, she was more liable to be attacked by somebody who'd kill her for sure. "Which direction did she go?" Naruto demanded.
Itachi smirked as he shrugged before saying, "I'm assuming towards Konoha. I'd hurry if I were you. There's no telling what sort of monsters will find her... or rather, what sort of monsters she'll find."
With a smirk, the missing-nin vanished in a puff of smoke informing the blonde that he had just been talking to a shadow clone. Fuck, that meant that Itachi had escaped back to wherever the Akatsuki's hideout was.
With a snarl, the blonde began running back towards the shinobi that had been following him. The Uchiha's clone hadn't been lying since even clones gave off a scent. Right now, every fiber in his being was telling him that he had heard nothing but the truth. Itachi hadn't wanted the girl near him any longer so he had set her free.
The one thing that confused him, however, was his comment. What did he mean by "what sort of monsters she'll find?" Just what the hell was his daughter supposed to be?
