Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: I told you that last one was dark. This is one isn’t happy by any means, but it’s not as bad. 3rd person POV in this chapter again. My head didn’t explode last time, and the way this story is writing itself, it is making these kinds of chapters a necessity.
Review Responses:
The Black Sand of Gara: Amazing review. Thank you for everything.
Jess249: I know; I felt so bad for Sasuke. Why do muses make people write things they don’t want to see?
Charmpit: Thanks, as always. I felt heavy and black after that chapter.
CHAPTER 10 - - - - -
Naruto screamed as he felt Baki’s presence behind him. He screamed in rage and sorrow and frustration and any other emotion he’d ever felt in his life. He’d just seen the boyfriend he loved with all his heart ripped away from him. He turned around and slammed his fists against Baki’s chest. “Why weren’t you there you fucker? Why weren’t you there? You were supposed to fucking be protecting him.” He sobbed against the man as he felt his body give way to the stress of the situation and threaten to leave him unable to stand.
Baki soothed Naruto’s hair, tears in his own eyes, but refusing to let them fall. He’d gotten into a fist fight with a man who made a comment about being a member of the Akatsuki family. He’d been trying to stay near them and still take care of the threat, but the fight had somehow, when he wasn’t looking, ended at the beach. The man disappeared on him and he’d been running back to Sasuke and Naruto when he saw Sasuke pulled into a car.
He couldn’t pull his piece on the crowded pier. He’d known that was a double-edged sword when he came up with this spot and time. He honestly hadn’t expected to have anything pulled in broad daylight like this; neither had Obito, which was why this whole plan had been approved in the first place. Everyone had wanted to give Naruto and Sasuke their time together, without making it feel like they were being forced to hide.
“I’m sorry, Naruto. I should have been there.” He didn’t have anything else to say. Whether or not the man who had pulled him away was a threat, he should never have left their side. He pulled Naruto close and walked them back to their own car. He got Naruto into the passenger seat and noticed he’d become almost catatonic. He knew this could not be good. He flipped his cell open and called Kisame first, to warn the band. “Kisame,” he said, his voice faltering some.
“Shit,” was heard from the other side. “Baki, what the fuck happened? You sound like shit.”
Baki took a deep breath and glanced at the motionless Naruto. He knew the flood gate would open soon and it wouldn’t be pretty. “They got him.” He couldn’t say more. His voice was going to give out with his emotions.
“Naruto or Sasuke?” It was all business in Kisame’s voice. He had to hold it together. He knew Baki was feeling failure, though he’d known the man long enough to assume there had been no chance for him to succeed.
Baki sighed, “Sasuke,” he paused, choking off a threatening sob. “I failed. Warn the band that Naruto’s pretty catatonic right now, but I think that will change violently and quickly.”
Kisame sighed. “I will. You guys get here fast. Naruto needs to be around them when he snaps out of it.”
Baki clicked his phone shut. He stepped on the gas and ran light after light. He didn’t care. If anyone stopped him, which he doubted, he’d be let off immediately. They were back to the hotel in no time flat. Baki carried the normally bright and lively Naruto upstairs.
As soon as he opened the door, Kiba was taking Naruto from him. “Fuck, this is bad.” He motioned Hinata and Ten-Ten to make room on the couch. “Remember the last time?”
Hinata nodded. She looked at the confused bodyguards. “Last time something happened to Naruto that was bad enough to bring this state of mind about, he tried to kill himself when he snapped out of it.”
Naruto sighed. He knew they were talking about him. He knew he should be angry and thrashing about and kicking people’s asses, but he had no ability to move. It was like those bastards stole his ability to function when they stole his Sasuke. He felt people moving around him, giving him pillows, making him comfortable. He felt Hinata’s arms wrap around his body and saw her tears, but still he could not make his body function. He knew when it did it would be with a violent force.
Kisame clicked the phone shut. “Obito and Itachi will be here tonight sometime. They are bringing some people with them.” He sighed and rubbed his temples. “I know there was nothing you could do, Baki. Everyone knows you tried your best.”
Baki kicked the island bar in the middle of the room. “Fuck what I tried; I fucking failed. Sasuke’s probably been,” his voice faltered again. He couldn’t make it say what he was thinking. He couldn’t say raped or killed.
The band and the bodyguards were quiet as they waited for Itachi and Obito. They took turns sitting and holding Naruto. When Itachi knocked on the door, he had a deep dread in his heart. When Obito had called and hold him what had happened in California, he wanted to go over to his father’s and smash everything in sight. He wanted to believe he and Obito could keep Sasuke safe. Even their vast connections had not been able to stop the inevitable.
The door opened and Itachi’s heart dropped. He hadn’t seen the blond that had stolen Sasuke’s heart. He’d seen pictures and heard Sasuke talk about him, but never seen him in person. He knew if Sasuke saw what he just saw, Sasuke’s anger would explode and no one would be able to stop him. “Baki,” Itachi started, but stopped as soon as he saw the look on the other man’s face. “It’s not your fault.”
Baki walked into Itachi’s waiting arms and sniffed. “It is my fault. I was assigned to watch them, and I failed. Kisame wouldn’t have been led off the way I was. Neither would Anko. I’m just a terrible guard.”
Itachi smacked Baki’s face. “I refuse to listen to this bullshit. You need to snap out of it now so you can help us rescue my baby brother.” When Baki’s eyes looked back at Itachi it was with understanding and resolve. “Good,” Itachi said, taking Baki’s hand in a comforting gesture. He’d gotten more attached to the man than he cared to admit. “Now, how is he?” he asked, indicating Naruto.
Hinata stuttered, face to face with Itachi again. “H-he’s g-going to be all right, eventually. H-he just doesn’t know how to c-cope with intense feelings because he feels even little things so intensely.”
Itachi nodded. “I understand. I’m sorry this happened to you all. We will make it right. You need to get your singer right before your show tomorrow. Sasuke left a note, which Naruto can read when he snaps out of it. The point of the note is that the show must go on regardless of the circumstances.”
Obito sighed as he slipped into the room as well. “Yes, the show is important. Sasuke was very adamant about that show.” He nodded to the band. “It’s nice to see you all again. I wish it was under more pleasant circumstances.”
Ten-Ten yawned, “We have kind of gotten used to pleasant being a fleeting fee-,” she was cut off by a scream of primal rage from Naruto.
Hinata was sitting with Naruto and she jumped, but refused to let go of him. Naruto clawed at whatever he could reach. Through experience, Hinata made sure that wasn’t her. He screamed. He screamed until his throat was raw and aching and then screamed some more. When he was finally quiet the tears came. He couldn’t stop them as they flowed down his face. His nose was running and he wiped at it and his eyes hopelessly.
Hinata leaned down and whispered soothing words to her adopted brother. “Shh, Naruto. We’ll find him and take care of the people who hurt him. We’ll take care of him so that you feel better.”
When his tears had run dry he turned toward the man in the room he didn’t recognize, but who looked like an older version of Sasuke. “Who are you?” Naruto asked pointedly.
Itachi frowned. “Sasuke’s brother, Itachi. I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to meet you with Sasuke around, but then again that would have probably been just as bad. I’m a total ass to him.”
Naruto nodded. “Hinata told me about that. You care though, don’t you?” Itachi nodded. “I need to sleep. I can’t think when I feel this way.”
Itachi nodded again. “You can rest and we will work on the plan. I want you to read the letter Sasuke left you tonight though. You might as well get it all in one night.” He handed Naruto the envelope containing Sasuke’s letter and pushed the blond boy toward the bedroom.
When he was safely inside his room, Naruto flopped down on the bed and tore into the envelope. He cried as he read the letter. He didn’t think he had tears left, but here they were falling.
Dearest Naruto,
How sappy does that sound? I know, shut up that’s not the point of this letter idiot. I wanted you to know that if something does happen in LA, you need to be strong for me. You can fall apart all you want; I wouldn’t dream of taking that from you. I need you to do the concert though. I need you to prove to my father that you are willing to fight him.
If something happens to me, I want you to know that I’ve never been in love before. I’ve never had that cozy feeling when I woke up in bed next to someone. Even though our relationship hasn’t been exactly smooth to this point, I’d never trade it for anything. The few days and nights we have had together have been wonderful to me. They are my drug and I’m addicted.
If you weren’t part of the band, if you weren’t a megastar right now, I’d still love every expression on that face of yours. I’d still love every stupid thing you say. I’d still love every different laugh for all your different moods. I’d love those eyes that express more in one second without words than most people can express in a whole lifetime.
I’m trying to say, even though I know if something happens to me you won’t want me after, I want you to know that I’ve never been happier. I love you, Uzumaki Naruto. You’ve softened me and ruined me and turned me into someone I always wanted to be. I love you.
Sasuke
He crumpled the paper. He was going to kill that fucking bastard when he saw him again. How dare Sasuke think he wouldn’t want him anymore? He would love that bastard regardless of what other people did to him. As long as Sasuke loved him and only him, he didn’t care what the other pricks did. Well, he cared. He didn’t want Sasuke to feel pain, but he didn’t care in the way that he’d never want to touch Sasuke again. It was the complete opposite. He wanted to grab Sasuke and hold him close and soothe him. He wanted to kiss the black hair and pouty lips.
He cried himself to sleep that night and it was all he could do not to punch a hole in the wall the next morning when he read the letter again. “What’s the plan?” he asked to the very much awake group of men in business suits at the table. “Concert is tonight, and I’ll do it because Sasuke the goddamn bastard asked me to. After that, I’m going to teach people that you don’t fuck with Uzumaki Naruto. I’m never going to be the little bitch who was sold off for a drug debt again. I made myself that promise a long time ago. I’m not letting Sasuke suffer the same fate.”
Itachi sighed and rubbed his temples. “Sit down and have breakfast. Kisame just went to get some for everyone.”
Naruto nodded. “I’m sorry about yesterday.” The band started stirring on the couch and floor behind them. Hinata stood up and smiled when she saw Naruto awake and giving her a half smile. “I didn’t hurt you did I, Hinata?”
She shook her head. “I learned how to avoid those claws of yours a while ago.” She came over and gave him a hug. “I’m just glad you didn’t do anything stupid last night.”
Naruto sighed and shrugged. “I figured if I did do something stupid either Sasuke would get away from those fuckers and find out and then resurrect me just to kill me or it’d kill him. Anyway, we should talk about the plan,” Naruto started addressing Itachi when there was a knock on the door.
Anko stood up from the corner of the room and moved to the door. Checking through the peephole, she turned back to the room and shook her head. Baki moved toward the door and pulled his piece, motioning Anko to open the door. He paused, gun pointed toward the small group in the hallway, before dropping his gun and laughing. It was that kind of hysterical laughter that comes with relief after an intense scare.
Baki moved back and let the group into the room. He sighed and shook his head, motioning to Anko that it was all right, though he couldn’t breathe yet. Hinata took it upon herself to speak for Baki. “These are Sasuke’s friends.”
Neji looked at Hinata and then took in the rest of the room. “Someone has gotten to Sasuke, haven’t they?”
Itachi knew the Hyuuga boy from anywhere. He and Sasuke had become friends because they shared similar life situations. They had remained friends because they truly had a lot in common. Neither one of them wanted to be known for their family. Both of them were more into men than women. “Yes. My family has kidnapped Sasuke and most likely he is in the possession of the Akatsuki family.”
The small group assembled sat near the band. Neji shook his head. “Sasuke invited us to the concert and told us where he was staying. He told us that we were supposed to make sure that Naruto was all right if something had happened to him. I think it’s about time someone told us exactly what is going on, since we’ve been kept in the dark for far too long.”
Obito nodded. “I want Sasuke’s friends and the band, minus Naruto to join me in the bedroom. When Kisame returns with breakfast he can join us there. I would like Baki, Anko, Itachi, Naruto, and the assembled muscle to discuss the plan and any setbacks that may occur out here.” The group found it impossible to argue with Obito, and the respective groups broke apart.
Itachi sighed as he looked at Naruto. “So far, the best we’ve been able to do is learn that Akatsuki has not taken Sasuke out of the LA area. That means they must have a headquarters here somewhere. We have people working on that, but we still haven’t been able to find it.”
Naruto snorted. “Should go ask the jackass on the pier, then. He was one of them. The guy who was giving us these,” he pulled his shirt up just a bit to show the LWYB he had received earlier, “was the one who pulled Sasuke into that car.”
Itachi nodded. “Later I want you to give all the details about that guy to my friend here, we’ll call him Indigo. These men can’t have their identities known, just so you are aware.” Naruto nodded. “Who else was in the car, Naruto?”
Naruto shook his head. “I didn’t recognize them. Two of them kind of looked like you and Sasuke and one was a redhead with piercings.”
Itachi groaned. “Fuck.” He turned to the group of unknown men at the table. “My father and Madara were with Pein. This may complicate things.”
Naruto tuned out the conversation. He knew he should be paying attention to it, but he found he didn’t have the strength. Eventually someone was asking him about the concert. He smiled. “Sorry, I was zoned out. What was that?”
Itachi gave Naruto a little frown, but it seemed sympathetic and understanding. “I was asking what time the show was.”
“Oh,” Naruto thought for a second. “Doors open at 6.”
Itachi turned to Baki and Anko. “We’ll have to check to for anything explosive in the building by 5:30. One of us will be at every entrance to the building, regardless of whether it is public or private.”
Naruto sighed and went back into his own mind. He closed his eyes and drifted off, vaguely aware that someone had covered him with a blanket. He grasped at the warmth and turned over, snuggling into the couch.
