----------Naruto's apartment----------
After another two-hour shower - during which he yet again had to fight to get the feel of Sasuke off him - Naruto fell onto his bed with a sigh, wearing his usual bedclothes of T-shirt and boxers. ::Why is he doing this to me...?! All I want is for him to leave me alone!!:: he thought with a dejected moan.
It wasn't long after he'd left Iruka-sensei's that Sasuke found himself sliding into Naruto's apartment through the kitchen window. This way he avoided doing both things that Naruto had yelled at him for. He had used the kitchen instead of the bedroom window and now he would knock politely at the bedroom door. Doorway, he noted as he exited the small kitchen and took notice through the living room that Naruto's bedroom door was mostly open. The apartment was quiet, but for the tick-tick-tick of the alarm clock by Naruto's bed and the other boy's soft breathing. Sasuke couldn't quite tell if Naruto was asleep, or not but he figured he would find out soon enough. He moved straight through the tiny living room to the bedroom entrance and wrapped careful knuckles on the wooden frame.
Naruto groaned. He didn't even need Kyuubi's grumble to tell him who it was. “G'way,” he growled, not taking the arm off his eyes. And he'd thought he was done dealing with the Uchiha for the night!
Having been acknowledged Sasuke entered the room on cat-silent feet. “I wasn't finished with you ...” he returned and moved closer to the bed, slowly so as not to startle Naruto too badly. He didn't realize how that must have sounded to the fox-boy. His mind was ready to continue their conversation - and preferably the cuddle too, but he doubted that would happen - about how Sasuke could regain Naruto's trust.
“Yes, you were.” Naruto freed one eye to glare at the approaching Uchiha. “Get out before I make you get out. What part of 'leave me alone' is so hard for you to understand?” he growled, a flash of warning crimson flickering across his eye before it returned to its normal blue.
“The alone part,” he said and ignoring all warnings, sat on the edge of Naruto's bed. “Why are you insisting on taking the same path I took before? Didn't you see already how well that works out?”
“What path? The path of ice-bastard-ness?” Naruto shot back, scooting his legs away from Sasuke so that they weren't touching.
“Yes,” he said simply and looked down at Naruto, though his teeth ground a little. That was the truth, but Sasuke still didn't like having it shoved in his face. Yes, he had been a royal dick back in their training days, but he hadn't known any other way to be. He was probably still somewhat of a dick only now he was a little better at reading people and he actually cared a little bit about what other people thought. It was probably because Itachi's demise was in the palm of his hand, or rather it was coursing through Sasuke's veins. He no longer had that entirely obsessive and single-minded goal. He was at his own leisure now, the power race was won. Itachi just didn't know that yet. ::And when he finds out, the bastard will wish he'd never started it....::
“That's only when I'm with you.” Deciding he was hungry, Naruto got up and walked over to the kitchen, where he pulled a bag of cookies out of his fridge and began to munch. He didn't even offer Sasuke one for politeness' sake, preferring to act as if he wasn't there.
Sasuke eyed the cookies and felt his stomach roil a little as he remembered the taste. Drinks were fine. He could and would drink just about anything, but anything put anything solid in front of him and it turned his stomach. He had followed Naruto almost like a puppy from the Chuunin’s bedroom and was currently leaning on the wall watching Naruto munch. Something inside of him told him to go now and let Naruto be for a little bit, so he simply walked up to the blond and, before Naruto could protest, planted a small kiss on the other boy's forehead. “Sleep well tonight...” he murmured and then he was gone as if he had never been there.
Naruto blinked in surprise. And then, “UCHIHA SASUKE YOU ARE A DEAD MAN!!!” he roared, forgetting that Sasuke was already dead... sort of. Determined to take out his frustration on something he ate the whole pack of cookies before ripping the package to shreds. And yet again he swore himself to sleep on the couch.
----------Hokage's Office, Late the Next Morning----------
The slamming open of the huge double doors and Jiraiya's frustrated bellyaching brought Tsunade out of a sound sleep. She shot bolt upright in her chair and blinked about herself sleepily before finally registering what the disturbance was. Kakashi stood there closing the doors with Jiraiya practically pouting between her desk and the messy-haired Jounin. “What is it?!” she snapped irritably.
As calmly as he could (which wasn't very considering the stress-pock on his forehead) Kakashi walked up to Tsunade's desk, eyeing Jiraiya to do the same. “I want to know everything about Sasuke's situation and I want to know now.”
The Sannin had refused to tell him anything since Sasuke's fight with Tsunade and Kakashi was getting very frustrated. He still couldn't find Sasuke during the day, it was difficult to find him at night, and Naruto was quiet and moody.
Jiraiya just shrugged apologetically at Tsunade.
Tsunade glared murderously at Jiraiya for letting this disturb her! She was a busy woman and didn't have time for this, but since Kakashi was there and there would be no getting rid of him until after he'd gotten what he wanted she sighed and said, “Sasuke is a vampire. That means he is the dead brought back to life. He drinks human blood to survive, but I have no idea how that works. He is completely preternatural. His strength, his speed, his agility are all superhuman and far beyond that of even the ninja. The sunlight is harmful to him somehow and so he is nocturnal by nature. As for any of his other abilities I'll just say I'm sure he has some, but I have no idea what they might be.” Now she was glad she'd done a little research.
“Human blood...?!” Kakashi groaned at the implications of that. “Wonderful... How much of a threat is this to the citizens?”
Jiraiya was about to answer, but the door slamming open cut him off.
“I want a mission far away from here and I want it now!!” Naruto demanded, shoving his teachers aside to glare at Tsunade. He was ready to stare her down if he had to! Anything to get away from one Uchiha Sasuke!
“No, brat! Can't you see that the grown ups are having a little discussion that doesn't involve snot-nosed kids with no manners!!?” She stood up and glared down at him from the important side of the desk. “Get out... unless you want to hear everything we're saying about Sasuke.” ::That ought to make him leave... He's gotta be so sick of hearing about Sasuke by now that he's ready to run screaming to me for a mission far, far away... Oh, wait... :: and in her mind she gave an evil mental grin ::He already has...::
“Give me a mission first, kuso baba!” Naruto's eyes narrowed to fox-slits as he glared.
“What's the matter, gaki? Don't like having a rival again?” Jiraiya taunted lightly. He rolled his eyes when he was ignored.
Sighing, Kakashi tried to get through to the stubborn blond. “What's the problem, Naruto?” ::As if I have to ask...:: But even he was ignored as Naruto continued to glare at Tsunade.
And Tsunade glared right back. “Get. Out. Now.... or I'll have you thrown out by your own mentors. I don't have time for this. I have important business to attend to.” ::Like trying to figure out what to do if Sasuke becomes a threat...::
“Fine! Then I'll just leave.” With that Naruto stomped out of the office and slammed the door shut behind him. ::To hell with her! Damn old woman...::
“Oh, damn...” Jiraiya muttered. “Do I have to play baby-sitter again?”
“Jiraiya, you know everything I'm telling Hatake-san. Go make sure the little idiot stays in the village,” she ordered and then looked to Kakashi. “I'm ready for your questions now, Kakashi.... but then I have a few of my own.”
“One of these days I'm going to kill that brat... Yondaime never gave me this much trouble,” Jiraiya muttered before vanishing.
As soon as Jiraiya had left Kakashi asked, “How much of a threat is Sasuke being a vampire to the citizens?” …again.
“I can only go by what I have seen and hearsay from research. As you’ve experienced yourself, he gets very intimidating when he’s Hungry. The legends refer to that Hunger as Blood Lust, something similar to the Killing Aura of our fellow ninja except that it drives them even more than it affects those around them. That said the Killing Aura of a vampire is so much more powerful than that of a ninja it’s enough to smother you if you’re around and the vampire has let himself go without a meal for too long. Kind of gives you a little bit of sympathy for him after having experienced the affects of a Vampiric Killing Aura, ne? … According to this -…” and she held up a large, old, leather-bound Manuscript that she had sent a few Jounin to retrieve while she mended her hand after they had fled from Sasuke’s wrath. It was littered with bookmarks and showed that she had been through most of it already. In fact it had served as her pillow when she’d dozed off maybe a half an hour before Kakashi and Jiraiya had woken her up. “It’s how they hunt. They exhaust and terrify their prey into making a mistake, exactly like a wolf. So, here’s the dilemma for me in answering that question: it’s Sasuke’s instinct and nature to do this to his prey, but as far as I can tell he is still of the Leaf. It’s not exactly a safe habit, but then it’s not that different than a natural animal hunting to survive. This book doesn’t tell me anything about how much blood he needs or how often.”
Tsunade sighed. She was no little bit frustrated over the lack of hard evidence to support the claims in the book, but it was all she had to go on. She figured Kakashi could do the exact math for his own answer from what she’d told him.
“I’m not sure how honest Sasuke would be, but you are a man he respects. My question to you, Kakashi, is more of a request. Do you think you can talk to him and ask him about all of this? See what he says. I trust you will be able to judge his truths and untruths well enough, seeing as you and the rest of Team Seven are really the only ones who know much about him. After all, you chose Sasuke to carrying on the Chidori…. You won’t find him during the day, as I’ve said, but come evening if you call for him loud enough, he’ll probably come right to you. His senses are… according to this book… ‘far superior to even those of a demon’…”
And now Tsunade just looked exhausted as she sagged back into the chair behind her. She’d been up most of the last few nights reading that damn book. She was uneasy. No one had reported any missing persons or sudden and unexplainable deaths. Was Sasuke holding back and putting everyone in danger by hoping he could hold out until Itachi was dead? According to the book, a vampire that had gone without a good meal for some length of time was rendered insensible by the Blood Lust and would not even be aware of the havoc he would wreak on the human populace until after his Blood Lust had been sufficiently sated. Or was he leaving the village to prey upon the lower towns all about them? She could only hope that he still held enough respect for Kakashi to understand that the village’s safety came first and that the Jounin meant only good by asking such uncomfortable questions… If the Jounin decided he would do it at all.
Kakashi lowered his head for a moment, letting all that Tsunade had told him sink in. He soon nodded and brought his head back up. “I will talk to him.” He was already coming up with questions to ask his former apprentice. And as much as he hated to, he steeled himself for killing Sasuke - making sure he was truly dead, not dead come alive again - if any of his answers proved him to be a threat to the safety of Konoha.
“Kakashi...” Tsunade broke into the Jounin's thoughts with a serious tone. “I trust you to be discreet... and I trust you to use all due caution. He could kill you... easily... and you are one of this village’s major assets, something we have in sort supply. Do you understand?”
He nodded in complete understanding. He knew he couldn't depend on his status as Sasuke's teacher and mentor to keep him safe. “I will be careful,” he assured her.
“If he even looks remotely temperamental, abort the mission, and wait. Is that clear?” she impressed upon him again that she would not lose another ninja if it could be avoided.”
“Crystal.” ::Iruka would kill me if I did something even close to being as stupid as to NOT listen to an order like that!::
“Good. Now go home... I've got things I have to do. Dismissed.” She smirked and leaned forward again, ready to attack her work once more... or at least do so until he was gone. Then she was going back to her much needed nap.
