Author's note: Father's Day has already passed where I live, but this idea popped up in my head and wouldn't leave me alone. Something fluffish? *clears throat* I don't know, it's something I guess.
Warnings: Sasuke's pov; Alternate universe; both parents sets are alive; established slash; police Minato and Sasuke; minor references to violence and crime; implied MPreg; fluff
I hope you'll like it in spite of the potential weirdness!
All Cards on the Table
"Did we get everything?" Sasuke muttered, more to himself than to his companion as he checked the grocery list once more; one hand resting on the shopping cart.
"Think so," Naruto confirmed before he perked up, gravitating towards the closest aisle. "Ah, cards for Father's Day! We still need to get those!"
"Not for my father," Sasuke instantly retorted, comparing the list to what they had put in the cart. "Dick wouldn't appreciate it anyway."
Their relationship might have bettered in the last couple of years now that Sasuke was no longer a student being nearly crushed underneath Fugaku's ridiculous expectations, but there was still some lingering resentment, making him unwilling to send the older man a card. Not that Fugaku would be interested in such a card to start with, though.
"Well, perhaps not," Naruto allowed as he riffled through the shelves containing the cards. "But my dad deserves a card!"
"That he does," Sasuke said, easily agreeing.
Minato, after all, was far from a dick compared to Fugaku. As a matter of fact, he was the complete opposite and could almost be considered an angel. 'Almost' because Sasuke wasn't particularly religious and obviously Minato wasn't dead. In many ways Minato had acted more like a father to Sasuke in all those years than Fugaku had ever done. If there was any man who deserved an attention on Father's Day, it was Minato for sure.
"You got one picked out?" Sasuke inquired, stuffing the list in his pocket once he was done with it.
"Hm, got a couple. Don't know which one yet," Naruto replied and threw a couple of cards in the cart, where they slipped between the bag of cat litter and the four bottles of milk. "I think we can pay now."
"Looks like it," Sasuke agreed and steered the cart towards the cash register.
He sighed when he spotted the lines in front of each checkout. It looked like it was going to take a little while before it was their turn. Good thing he didn't have work today.
The radio crackled to life; his father-in-law's voice containing a hint of urgency. "Suspect is heading your way, Sasuke."
"Got it," he affirmed.
He'd barely removed his finger from the radio's button when their suspect showed up, skidding right around the corner. There was a long, thin cut running all the way from his right cheekbone to his jaw and blood was smeared all across his ripped shirt. Sasuke snorted quietly, wondering how the guy was going to try to talk himself out of this with that much evidence plastered across himself. Because even though he was bleeding from the cut in his forehead, the amount of blood present on his shirt was too much to be solely his.
"Hold it right there!" Minato called out, thundering footsteps accompanying his order. "Stop!"
But of course he wasn't going to stop because when did criminals ever heed that warning? Sometimes Sasuke wondered why they even bothered calling out the warning, seeing as they refused to listen anyway. Right as the guy was about to rush past Sasuke, he threw himself on top of him, slamming him down to the ground. The guy let out a pained yell when he landed face first on the ground, but Sasuke paid it no mind, handcuffing him while he was still disoriented.
"Oh good, you got him," Minato sighed relieved, coming to a stop. The setting sun behind him made his blond hair glisten. "Wasn't sure whether he would try to go for the fence."
"Wouldn't have made much of a difference," Sasuke muttered and rose up, pulling the guy up. He would have been fast enough to cross the distance and pull the guy down if he had tried to go for the fence. "Let's get him to the precinct. You going to read his rights?"
"Yes, you can call in that we'll be bringing him in."
Rolling his shoulders, Sasuke informed the precinct they were about to head back with their suspect in custody while Minato informed the guy of his rights. Whether or not the guy was actually listening was a whole other matter, but their cameras were still running, recording the proof that they were doing their job. Even with their suspect suddenly acting mum, refusing to say anything, it wouldn't do him any favours. Considering he was covered in the blood of his victim, he would be hard pressed to talk his way out of this one.
He'd been able to escape twice before because his previous two victims hadn't been able to give any identifying markers. With how aggressive he'd been during the robberies, they had made his arrest a priority before he could make even more victims – or before one of his victims wouldn't be able to tell the tale anymore. Several of them had been forced to spent several days in the hospital due to the gravity of their injuries.
Now that they had him the victims and their families could finally be at ease again, scared as they had been that the guy would return.
"You can go home, I can take care of the rest of the paperwork," Minato reassured him a couple of hours later.
"You sure?" Sasuke questioned, throwing a quick glance at the clock. It was inching to seven thirty and dusk was starting to firmly settle in now.
Minato waved him off. "Yes, yes, I'm sure. It won't take that long anymore, anyways," he said lightly and smiled. "Tell my son I love the card he got me." His blue eyes – the copy of which Sasuke gazed into every time he looked at his husband – shone amused.
"Will do. He'll be happy to hear it," Sasuke chuckled, remembering how excited Naruto had been to send his card for Father's Day.
Sasuke had offered to bring it with him this morning seeing as he and Minato worked together, but Naruto had insisted on dropping it off at his parents' place last night instead. Sasuke hadn't even tried to argue with him about it. Naruto could just be a bit eccentric like that.
"See you tomorrow," Minato smiled before he turned serious again as he focused his attention back on the computer screen.
After exchanging more greetings with some of his colleagues also unfortunate enough to have the Sunday shift, Sasuke made his escape outside, breathing in deeply. The air had a slight hint of rain still clinging to it; it had to have been a light shower, though, because there wasn't even the slightest puddle left. He got into his car and before he started it, he texted Naruto that he was on his way home, asking whether he'd eaten dinner already.
Usuratonkachi 07.51 p.m.
Nope, waiting for you ^_^
Sasuke sighed softly.
You know you don't have to do that if I'm late home
He started the car, but let it idle for a bit as he waited for Naruto's reply. Loud cackling passed by him as a group of young women made their way down the street; their rather revealing outfits indicating they were going to a club.
Usuratonkachi 07.52 p.m.
I know, but eating alone isn't fun either
Well, he supposed that was true. At least he would have some company while he ate his dinner.
The roads were relatively empty tonight, which wasn't that surprising considering it was Sunday evening and most people would be home by now if they had even left it in the first place. The barely there humming melodies of the music on the radio accompanied him all the way home; the words indiscernible and jumbled, but Sasuke couldn't particularly be bothered with turning the volume up.
Turning into his street, the lit windows of his neighbours greeted him as he drove past their houses. A couple of dogs were having an argument somewhere in the neighbourhood; some people were still outside in their garden, judging by the soft laughter rising up briefly when Sasuke parked his car and shut down the motor.
He took a moment to stretch his arms and back when he got out of his car and rolled his shoulders. God, but he truly hated those desk chairs at the precinct; they were hell on his back and shoulders. How was it possible for a chair to be that damn uncomfortable?
Shaking his head, he retrieved his keys and selected the one for his home from the collection. The other keys jangled lightly when he turned the key in the lock and he noted surprised how the hallway was dark.
"Naruto?" he called out, shedding his jacket before pulling off his shoes, replacing them with his house slippers.
"Upstairs!" came the muffled reply. "Just putting something away, I'll be back down in a sec."
"All right." He padded to the kitchen, wondering what they should make as a late dinner. He wasn't particularly in the mood for something fancy and elaborate.
Something on the kitchen table caught his attention and he raised an eyebrow at the envelope leaning against the fruit bowl. It bore his name in Naruto's familiar messy handwriting and the sight of it confused him. Why would Naruto give him an envelope when he was home? Was this meant to be some kind of prank?
"What are you up to now?" Sasuke murmured, half exasperated half amused as he snatched the envelope from the table.
The firmness of it indicated that it held some type of card and not a simple note – or maybe glitter. Naruto had resorted to glitter bombs a couple of times before in the past. Sasuke swore they still found glitter every time they used the broom or the vacuum.
Somewhat wary now, he opened the card slowly and peeked inside. Just a card. No glitter bomb then. That still didn't explain why Naruto would give him a card instead of saying what he needed to say, though.
His confusion only grew when he pulled the card from the envelope; the front of it had a simple picture of a bear holding the paw of a little bear; its kid perhaps? Both were dressed in a similar colourful sweater and the background depicted a sun shining through the leaves of a small forest.
"What on earth …" he trailed off bewildered and opened the card, hoping the content would actually tell him what was going on.
Happy Father's Day!
Still a bit early, I know, but we both know you're going to be a great dad! You'll find that out yourself, because guess who's going to be a dad before the end of the year?
Accompanying the small note was a picture taken of four pregnancy tests. Four very obvious positive tests; the picture zooming in on every little display bearing the plus sign.
Sasuke was still frozen by the time Naruto entered the kitchen, a sheepish but excited smile gracing his lips. He shuffled closer to Sasuke, fidgeting with his worn out shirt. The orange cloth had become so threadbare, it was a miracle it wasn't riddled with holes yet.
"And?" Naruto broke the silence; his eyes luminous in the kitchen light. He looked both hopeful and nervous, biting down on his lower lip. "What do you think? Don't really have a present, but I figured that - "
"You're pregnant," Sasuke cut him off abruptly; his gaze glued onto the picture before he ripped his eyes away from them, looking at Naruto's stomach instead. His stomach which was still flat at the moment, but which would soon swell with their …
"Yeah, I am. Took the tests last week," Naruto admitted; a blush staining his cheeks. "Guess we didn't need to try for that long, huh?" He laughed, sounding almost embarrassed as he ducked his head, flushing even brighter.
"You're pregnant," Sasuke repeated, his tongue seemingly stuck around those words. "You're having a baby. My baby."
Wonder started to fill him, warmth rapidly expanding in his chest.
"I am," Naruto confirmed; his mouth twitching as if he wasn't sure whether he should laugh at how stumped Sasuke seemed to be. "Took you by surprise, huh?"
"I can't believe – you actually gave me a card," Sasuke said, smiling in disbelief as he waved the card in question around.
Naruto shrugged casually. "Well, I wanted to make the news special, so I figured this would be a good way to break the news, no?"
"You're unbelievable," Sasuke muttered before he threw the card on the table and drew Naruto in a tight embrace.
Naruto hummed pleased, eagerly returning the hug before he let his chin be coaxed upwards so Sasuke could kiss him.
"How long?" Sasuke asked when they broke apart, slightly breathless. As if on automatic pilot, his hand drifted down, coming to rest over Naruto's stomach.
A hand covered his. "At the very least two months," Naruto grinned; his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Not sure how many weeks, though, I wanted to wait with the appointment until you could join me."
"We'll be making an appointment first thing tomorrow morning," Sasuke declared, because the only reason why he wasn't immediately grabbing his phone to call now was because nobody would pick up this late on a Sunday.
"Don't you have an early shift?" Naruto smiled bemused, laughing surprised when hands dipped around to grasp his arse, picking him up. He wrapped his legs automatically around Sasuke's waist, his arms linked around Sasuke's shoulders.
"The shift can wait," Sasuke said dismissively and made his way to the living room with Naruto still clinging on to him. The bedroom was too far and they needed to celebrate now.
"You're going to let my dad down?" Naruto said mischievously; his eyes flaring up when Sasuke pressed him down into the couch, crawling between his legs.
"I'm sure your dad will forgive me," Sasuke murmured, breathing gently into Naruto's neck, watching his skin ripple with goose bumps. "With him becoming grandpa and all that."
Naruto clasped his hands around his neck and smiled up at him. "Happy Father's Day, Sasuke."
Dipping his hand underneath Naruto's sweater, feeling his stomach muscles gently contract underneath his touch, Sasuke smiled back. "Happy Father's Day, Naruto."
Their next kiss had never tasted so sweet before.
Dinner was forgotten in favour of something more important: celebrating the news. What was missing dinner once when he could worship his husband instead?
The End
AN2: My version of a silly drabble, I suppose. I hope it wasn't too awful! For the ones interested: I posted a crossover between Naruto and Heaven Official's Blessing last week; it's called 'One and the Same' (yes, I don't know what I was thinking; I apologise for the abomination)
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
