Colour Me Surprised
"Thank you for your time, Uchiha-san," Hashirama smiled and gathered the documents. "We will consider your proposal. Tomorrow we will give you our answer if that is not a problem for you."
"Not a problem at all," Sasuke smiled blandly. "Thank you very much for your time."
The other Senju brother, Tobirama, had his eyebrows furrowed and his mouth tightly pinched, but Sasuke paid him no mind. In the three days he'd been here so far, he had come to realise that no matter what he said or did, nothing would please the younger Senju brother. It was the oldest brother, Hashirama, that he really needed to convince as he was the one with the most power in the company. As Itachi had reassured him before he had departed for his business trip, however, convincing Hashirama shouldn't be a problem.
After exchanging goodbyes, Sasuke left the building, making his way to his rental car. Once inside, he released a huge sigh and rolled his shoulders, dropping his briefcase next to him on the passenger's seat. He was no stranger to convincing potential clients that the Uchiha cooperation was their best bet, but dealing with Tobirama was proving to be somewhat nerve-wracking with his constant scowls and dark muttering. He made their financial expert Kakuzu look like an absolute ray of sunshine in comparison.
Well, his work here was nearly done anyways. He'd laid out their proposal, pointed out all the benefits the Senju Company would receive if they accepted the offer and now it was up to the two brothers to decide whether they would agree or not. Tomorrow evening, if everything went right, he'd be back home, hopefully bearing good news.
After arriving at his hotel room, he checked his phone out of habit, noting he'd received a message from his husband two hours ago.
Naruto 03.36 p.m.
You in the mood for Facetime? You're being missed ;)
Snorting in amusement, he placed his briefcase on the table and whilst shrugging out of his jacket, he typed back a reply. Just got back. At the hotel now.
He barely had time to sit down on the bed, contemplating what he would order as room service when his phone buzzed with an incoming call. Settling himself more comfortably on the bed, he accepted the call, allowing the app to fill his entire screen. Instantly the grinning face of his husband showed up; his blue eyes glistening.
"Hey there, stranger," Naruto teased. When he shifted slightly, there was a glimpse of a kitchen cupboard behind him. "How was your day?"
"Good news: Hashirama seems to be open to our proposal. Bad news: his brother is less enthusiastic," Sasuke smiled wryly. "So all by all, not that bad of a day, but I'm going to be glad once I'm home again."
"Didn't Itachi say that you should mainly sweettalk the eldest one?" Naruto asked curiously. "That's that Hashirama guy, right?"
"Yeah, that was his advice." Sasuke pushed a pillow into a better position behind his back. "Like I said, he seems to be open to our proposal, so I should have good news tomorrow."
"Daddy, can I show dad my pictures?" came the tinny, eager voice of their adopted son from somewhere offscreen.
"Sure, baby, go get them; dad's on the screen now," Naruto grinned.
Sasuke smiled when Menma whooped in happiness before his thundering footsteps faded out of hearing. As soon as he was relatively certain that their son wasn't nearby anymore, he sobered up. "How did the meeting with the teacher go?"
The heavy sigh coming through had Sasuke grimacing. Right, not spectacular then.
"It took a bit before she would take me serious," Naruto said, scowling. "And then even longer before she would finally admit that some of those little pissants have been bullying Menma."
Sasuke pinched the bridge of his nose, pushing back the anger automatically flaring up. They had adopted Menma when the boy had been four years old. He'd been one of the longest residents at the orphanage back then, because his physical disability had turned off many potential parents. He'd been born with his left leg shorter than his right one, which led to his shoes and trousers having to be adjusted every time to ensure he could decently walk. The difference in length between the two legs wasn't insurmountable, yet a lot of couples had refused to even talk with Menma. Sasuke and Naruto had been the first couple to actually pay attention to the little dark haired boy. He'd melted their hearts the very second he'd thrown a shy, but painfully hopeful look at them.
Two weeks later the adoption papers had been finalized and Menma had skipped all the way to their car between them, holding onto their hands.
They had fallen in love with him the second they had been introduced, but unfortunately life could be quite cruel to those who didn't fit the 'norm' and a few weeks ago Menma had tearfully confided into them that some boys in his class were bullying him because of his adjusted shoes and his shorter leg. They had tried talking to the parents first, but clearly the douchebag gene was inheritable, because none of them had wanted to talk to Naruto and Sasuke.
Their next step had been to involve the school itself.
"I had to threaten to fucking sue the whole school, but she finally acquiesced to talk to those little douchebags," Naruto continued; his eyes flashing. "I warned her I wouldn't let this go until this entire shit is resolved. Fuck her, I could have punched her for being so goddamn difficult about this!"
"You know you shouldn't get that worked up now," Sasuke warned him, cursing this particular business trip for the umpteenth time. He should have been there with Naruto, but the trip couldn't be postponed and Itachi had his own clients to meet.
"Don't worry about us, we're fine," Naruto reassured him and his arm moved a bit. "I had Gaara with me, anyways, ready to throw hands in my stead."
"I bet he scared the hell out of her," Sasuke smirked.
Boxing in his spare time had given Naruto's best friend Gaara a very impressive physique in spite of his shorter stature. Combine that with his impressive glare and his 'don't fuck with me' attitude and nobody save for those with a death wish tried to mess with him.
"She didn't dare to look at him again after he told her she better start listening to me," Naruto smirked in return. "Bitch had it coming, though. If she thinks we won't follow up on this, she's mistaken."
"How was the appointment?" Sasuke asked, changing the subject before Naruto could get too worked up again.
Naruto's face softened and his smile was almost blinding even through the screen when he replied, "Everything's fine. We're both doing really well."
"Wish I could have been there," Sasuke muttered, concealing a sigh.
Yet another reason why he loathed this particular business trip: the fact that he had to miss out on the gynaecologist appointment of Naruto. They had shifted their focus to adoption when it became clear that getting pregnant might not be in their cards. There was no discernible reason why Naruto had problems becoming pregnant as everything was in working order. Tsunade, Naruto's doctor, had called it nature being difficult for some reason. Three years they had tried, even using medical means, but nothing had ever worked. Adoption had been their last option to finally have a child together.
Then four months ago after they had celebrated Menma's eighth birthday, Naruto had started to feel nauseous with several mornings spent hanging over the toilet bowl. To say they had both been silently freaking out about that was the understatement of the year. Naruto simply did not get sick. In all the years Sasuke had known him – considering they had grown up together, that was a significant amount of years – he could not recall even one moment in which Naruto had been actually sick. A light cold occasionally, sure. But never more than just some sniffles.
Throwing up several times a week, spread out throughout the days? Yeah, that was far from normal.
When Kushina, Naruto's mum, cautiously suggested that maybe they should take a pregnancy test, they had laughed it off, because obviously that couldn't be what was happening. They had tried for three years and it had never happened back then, so why would it happen now?
She was as stubborn as her son, however, and after roping in Sasuke's mother, the couple had finally given in and had agreed to buy some tests, if only to rub it in their faces that they had been wrong.
They hadn't been wrong.
All five tests – they had bought just one at the start, but had ended up purchasing more immediately after the first result – had blatantly shown a positive sign. One stick might be a false positive, but all five?
They hadn't dared to believe it, yet Tsunade had confirmed it not even two days later. Somehow they had beaten the odds and Naruto had become pregnant after all. Five months pregnant he was currently and luckily the nausea had abated after the first three weeks. Menma would soon have a little brother or sister. They had been worried about how he would react, but so far he'd been nothing but enthusiastic, looking forward to being a big brother and demanding he would be allowed to help out as well.
"Couldn't really be helped," Naruto said and shrugged, offering him a smile. "But hey, you still got a couple of other appointments you can join me at!"
"I will kick Itachi's arse if he sends me away on a business trip again when you have another appointment," Sasuke promised.
"We can always sic Deidara and Konan on him if he dares to do that again," Naruto said mischievously. "Especially Konan will go ballistic, I imagine, given that she and Nagato are parents too."
"I wouldn't want to be in my brother's shoes then," Sasuke agreed. Nagato's wife was a force to be reckoned with, even managing to subdue the ever rowdy and foul mouthed Hidan with just one look.
Nobody wanted to be on her bad side. Being on her bad side was even worse than being on Kakuzu's bad side – and that man scared the crap out of a lot of their employees simply by existing.
"Dad, dad, look what I made!" Menma piped up then and the next second Sasuke's screen was filled with nothing but colourful scribbles against white.
He heard Naruto laugh in the background. "Menma, sweetheart, you need to show them one by one. You have to hold it a bit further from the screen too, otherwise dad won't be able to see them well."
"Oh okay!"
The phone crackled when Menma shuffled his drawings around. Sasuke caught a glimpse of his small hand, the back of it smeared with red and green, before a picture of the sun and what might be the beach judging by the smudges of brown at the end of the paper followed by a lot of blue mixed with green.
"Sensei told us to draw a place where we want to spend the holidays at," Menma chirped. "So I made the beach! What do you think, dad?"
"Very pretty, Menma," Sasuke praised him. "Who knows, maybe we will go to the beach during your next holiday, hm?"
"Really?" Menma practically squeaked in excitement. "I want to go! This one, I made here at home!"
Menma showed his drawings one by one, giving a detailed explanation with each one about why he had drawn the picture and what was happening in it, all the while chattering about his classes too. Even after four years Sasuke was still amazed at how much Menma could say without having to draw a breath. He had to have learnt that from Naruto, because Sasuke himself wasn't that much of a talker.
"All right, Menma, time to go change into your pyjamas now," Naruto eventually said, jumping in when Menma fell quiet for a moment.
Before their son could form a protest, Naruto went on, "You've got school tomorrow and dad still has to eat his dinner, so we have to say goodbye now, baby. Dad will be back with us tomorrow."
"Yeah, okay," Menma said somewhat dejectedly and his face showed up on the screen, replacing his drawings. "I'll see you tomorrow, dad!"
"Yes, I'll be back home as soon as I can," Sasuke promised. "Now go change into your pyjamas, okay? Good night."
"Night, dad!"
"Sorry," Naruto chuckled ruefully as soon as Menma was out of the room. "I had no idea just how many drawings he'd made since he came home."
"Looks like we've got a budding artist," Sasuke said amused.
"He doesn't have it from me," Naruto scoffed. "Deidara might be rubbing off on him."
"As long as he doesn't start blowing up shit, I don't mind."
Naruto snickered. "We'll keep stimulating his drawing skills then. I'll see you tomorrow, love you."
Sasuke's chest warmed. "Love you too and the little one."
"And me!" Menma cried out from somewhere in the background.
Sasuke chuckled. "And of course you too, Menma."
Naruto winked at him and then the screen went black, the call ending.
Sasuke sighed and turned his attention to the menu card. Right, time to order some food, he guessed.
"God, I'm so going to kick that bastard's arse if he ever sends me on another business trip again," Sasuke groaned, dumping his briefcase on the floor before pulling off his jacket with jerky movements.
His flight had been delayed, because of course that was just his shitty luck, so it was already eight thirty in the evening by the time he finally arrived home. At least the Senju brothers had signed the contract.
Naruto smiled sympathetically, taking over the jacket to hang it away while Sasuke pulled off his shoes next. "At least you got good news, that has to count for something."
Sasuke pulled him against him, sliding his hands around his belly which was becoming more pronounced and rounded with each week that passed. "Doesn't matter," he muttered, nosing Naruto's temple. "I don't like being away from you for so long."
"Who's the clingy one now?" Naruto teased, uttering a pleased sigh when Sasuke captured his mouth in a deep kiss.
A kiss which was abruptly broken when Menma yelled from upstairs, "Is dad home?"
"Yeah, he is, Menma," Naruto called back.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "He's not asleep yet?"
"He wanted to see you before he would go to sleep," Naruto smiled sheepishly. "Didn't really have the heart to tell him no. I knew you'd be home soon, so I figured it wouldn't hurt extending his bedtime for once."
Sasuke stepped away from Naruto just in time to catch Menma when he came practically flying down the stairs in his rush to meet his dad.
"Dad, you're back!" Menma cheered, wrapping his arms around Sasuke's neck and his legs around his waist. "I missed you!"
"I missed you too," Sasuke smiled and ruffled his hair before hugging him. "Had a fun day at school?"
"Uhuh, daddy and I made you something!" Menma said excitedly and kicked out his legs, indicating he wanted to be put down.
"Oh?" Sasuke quirked an eyebrow and glanced at Naruto, who had a mysterious smile on his face. "And what did you make me?"
"It's in the kitchen, come on!" Menma grabbed his hand and tugged him along. He was slightly limping, having forgone his slippers in order to greet his dad.
"Had a busy afternoon, huh?" Sasuke remarked, curiosity piqued at how determined Menma was to get him into the kitchen.
"Well, we wanted to give you a proper welcome home," Naruto grinned.
"Oh, I know how you can give me a proper welcome home," Sasuke muttered low enough that only Naruto was able to hear him.
It had the blond man blushing, slapping his shoulder. "Behave," he hissed, but he was still grinning.
To Sasuke's surprise there was a single cupcake waiting for him on a plate. It was a chocolate one, scattered with blue and pink sprinkles on top of it.
"You made me a cupcake?" he asked and couldn't help but be somewhat dubious about it. Unlike Naruto and Menma, he didn't really have a sweet tooth. Naruto knew that, so why had he made him a cupcake?
"Hm, a special surprise," Naruto said non-committedly and leant against the kitchen counter, crossing his arms above his belly.
"Dad, you got to eat it now!" Menma said excitedly, nearly vibrating on the spot.
Sasuke chanced another glance at Naruto, but his husband made no move to counter Menma. "It's somewhat late, though," Sasuke commented. "I'll eat - "
"No, you have to eat it now!" Menma insisted stubbornly and then seemed to realise that he sounded somewhat stubborn, because his tone changed to a pleading one when he added, "Please, dad, try it out. Daddy and I made it for you."
"Well, all right," Sasuke gave in. At least it looked to be made with pure chocolate, so it shouldn't be overly sweet.
He hoped.
He picked it up from the plate and took a bite out of it, hiding his wince when some of the sprinkles got momentarily stuck between his teeth. The taste itself wasn't bad, to be honest, not overly sweet at least, and it did taste good.
"And?" Menma looked at him expectantly; his blue eyes wide.
"It's really - " Sasuke cut himself off when he got a good look at the inside of the cupcake.
The inside which did not match the outside at all. The inside which was coloured a deep pink. Wait a minute, why would the inside be …
His head swivelled around, his eyes landing straight on Naruto, who was grinning bashfully now; his hands cupping his belly.
"Surprise," he smiled. "We found out the baby's sex yesterday."
"Wait, does this mean that - "
"I'm getting a baby sister!" Menma yelled exhilarated, pumping his hands in the air. "The baby is a girl, dad!"
"We're getting a daughter," Sasuke said dazed. He barely remembered to put the cupcake back on the table before he crossed the distance between him and Naruto, kissing him squarely on his lips whilst framing his face with his hands. "Our own baby girl," he said in wonder; the words feeling both alien yet so normal in his mouth.
"Yeah, we are," Naruto laughed, pulling Menma between them when the boy squirmed between them for his own celebratory hug. "How's that for a welcome home present, huh?"
"The best one I've ever received," Sasuke stated and couldn't stop himself from kissing Naruto again and again before hugging Menma, settling him on his hip.
As Menma carefully touched Naruto's stomach, babbling about all the toys he could share with his baby sister once she was big enough, Sasuke took in the scene: his glowing husband, their grinning son and still in the womb, their precious baby girl.
He couldn't think of a better scene to come home to.
