They Are Definitely Together!
Shikamaru had never been the type to be terribly interested in other people's lives. What people did was their business as long as they didn't commit any violent acts. In their team Ino had always been the one taking an interest in the gossip spread around the village, eagerly speculating who might be doing what and with whom. Admittedly she'd calmed down somewhat in that regard, but the point was that Shikamaru had never been interested in any of that and was also not the type to make assumptions about someone or something.
No, he definitely was not the type to make assumptions – but right now he had no idea what to think of the scene he was witnessing.
He'd just arrived at Ichiraku's for a quick dinner – not in the mood to create his own and the last thing he wanted was to visit his parents and bother his mother into cooking something – when Naruto had shown up. That in itself was of course not strange at all; it would be far stranger to not see Naruto at the ramen shop. Uchiha had joined him, which in itself was not that strange either as Shikamaru could recall having seen the lone Uchiha heir eating ramen a couple of times before when they had been younger.
All of that was certainly not that odd – yet something about the scene currently taking place … confused Shikamaru somewhat.
He sat on Naruto's left side, enjoying his bowl of ramen, while Uchiha sat on Naruto's right side. Nothing out of the ordinary, except that Naruto and Uchiha sat rather close next to each other. In fact, Shikamaru was doubtful there was any space left between them and it actually surprised him that Naruto wasn't fully seated on Uchiha's lap somehow.
"I'm surprised Chouji and Ino aren't with you," Naruto remarked, chasing after a stubborn piece of egg.
"Chouji's helping his parents with something and Ino's on a date with Sai," Shikamaru replied.
"Oh, did he finally ask her out?" Naruto asked surprised, grinning. "That's great for them!"
"No, it was more the other way around," Shikamaru said. "She was the one asking him out, because according to her he was taking too long."
"Yeah, that does sound like her," Naruto agreed, chuckling.
"Wasn't Sakura planning on asking you out, Uchiha?" Shikamaru asked, remembering Ino mentioning something like that.
There had been a lot of eye-rolling accompanying that remark which had made Shikamaru glad that Sakura hadn't been anywhere in the vicinity. Trying to stop those two women from fighting was too much of a nightmare.
"She tried," Uchiha said disinterestedly as the same time Naruto winced. "Didn't work out in her favour."
No, Shikamaru supposed it hadn't. Even though he had never really talked much with Sakura, her crush on Uchiha was quite well-known throughout the village. Personally he didn't really understand the appeal of Uchiha. He guessed he was rather handsome, but even as kids he'd always been so standoffish that it was still considered to be some kind of miracle that he and Naruto had become best friends. He had never shown any inkling of interest in Sakura either, so Shikamaru didn't really get why she kept trying. It seemed rather pointless and a bit embarrassing as well to constantly keep asking someone out who'd just reject you over and over again.
"You got something on your cheek," Uchiha told Naruto, pointed at his left cheek. "How can you reach twenty years old and still not be able to eat without getting messy?"
"Oh fuck off," Naruto said good-naturedly and swiped at his left cheek. "Did I get it?"
"No, far from it," Uchiha snorted. "Come here."
Shikamaru watched with one eyebrow raised how Naruto easily turned to face Uchiha, allowing the other man to wipe his cheek clean with a tissue. He sat there patiently as if this was a common thing between the two of them.
"Honestly, you're such a mess," Uchiha clucked and turned Naruto's face from one side to the other to check for any other stains. "The food's supposed to go in your mouth, not on your cheek."
"Again fuck off, like you're that perfect," Naruto grinned, swatting Uchiha's shoulder. He didn't pull away until Uchiha released his face.
"I'm not the one with food on my face," Uchiha shot back.
"It wasn't that bad!"
For some reason Shikamaru was reminded of his parents and the way they could bicker about the most inane things. That was an odd thought to compare the two men with, but it was fitting too. Especially with the way they kept sitting so closely to each other, leaving not even an inch of space between their shoulders. He wasn't surprised about Naruto staying so close to Uchiha, because that was just Naruto: close to anyone he considered his friend. Uchiha, on the other hand, did surprise Shikamaru by not moving away at all, because he'd never been the type to touch someone else freely from what he could remember.
Except when that someone was Naruto apparently.
"You ready to pay?" Teuchi asked cheerfully, collecting their empty bowls, which in Naruto's case meant two bowls.
"Yes, please," Shikamaru said politely, retrieving his wallet from his pocket.
"Don't bother, I'll pay for you," Uchiha said, knocking Naruto's hand away when he went to grab his wallet as well.
"You sure?" Naruto asked surprised. "I can pay for my bowls."
"I'm the one who asked you to dinner, so I'm paying," Uchiha stated, already counting out the money.
Neither one noticed Shikamaru staring at them. "You asked him out to dinner?" he asked, wondering if he'd heard it correctly.
"Yes, I did just say that, didn't I?" Uchiha muttered, placing the money on the counter.
"He's such a gentleman," Naruto teased, wrapping his arm around Uchiha's neck. "You coming with me to my apartment?"
"Well, yeah, where else would I go to?" Uchiha snorted, rolling his eyes.
They both stood up, Naruto still clinging around Uchiha's neck, who didn't make a move to dislodge him.
"See you again, Shikamaru!" Naruto waved.
Uchiha merely inclined his head before they left together in the direction of Naruto's apartment.
Leaving Shikamaru to wonder whether Ino and Sai weren't the only ones to enjoy a date.
"The things I do, honestly," Tsunade muttered darkly, shielding her eyes from the piercing sunlight with her hand.
She hadn't exactly been planning on leaving the hospital for a damn house call of all things, but Sakura had looked near ready to burst out in tears when she told Tsunade that Uchiha had returned from his mission badly wounded, but wouldn't let her heal him. Tsunade had had half a mind to say that in that case there was no point in helping him out – if Uchiha wanted to bleed out, that was his prerogative – but her former pupil had looked so distressed, she had merely sighed and agreed to have a look at him.
She very much doubted she'd be more successful than Sakura considering she didn't have any sort of bond with Uchiha, but maybe with Naruto around, he'd be more receptive to being helped. Because apparently he had gone straight to Naruto's apartment instead of seeking help at the hospital.
Men could be so stupid.
She nodded at an elderly woman shuffling away from the apartment building. The woman smiled, offering her a nod. It was quiet around these parts; Tsunade's footsteps echoed in the staircase as she made her way up to the right floor. Hoping she wasn't about to walk into a really bloody scene, she halted in front of Naruto's apartment and knocked.
Silence reigned.
She knocked again, frowning slightly. Had they left the apartment? According to what Sakura had told her, Uchiha had been in a rather bad state, so it seemed questionable that they had moved elsewhere.
"Naruto?" she called out, but received no answer.
Unwillingly growing a bit concerned, she tested the doorknob, sighing when it easily gave away underneath her touch, allowing her to open the door. She would really need to have a talk with the brat about house safety. It didn't matter that he was a Jinchuuriki and therefore more dangerous than ninety-five percent of the people who might think of breaking in; leaving your door open like this was just asking for trouble.
She walked inside and immediately spotted a pair of foreign sandals haphazardly discarded against the wall. Those must belong to Uchiha, because she couldn't recall Naruto ever wearing that type of sandals. Her mouth thinned when she spotted some drops of blood decorating the wooden floorboard. It wasn't much, nor were the drops alarmingly big, but it did prove that Uchiha was indeed hurt.
"Damn, did you get into a fight with a bear?" she asked bewildered when her attention was caught by a blood soaked white shirt. It laid across the back of the couch, probably staining the material underneath it because it looked absolutely drenched in some places.
The sight of a discarded pair of trousers took her aback a bit, not having expected that. Was Uchiha mauled over his entire body? If so, why the hell hadn't he gone to the hospital then?
She drew to an abrupt stop when she reached the bedroom and caught Naruto in bed – curled around a pale but still alive and sleeping Uchiha. They both seemed to be naked, judging by their bare shoulders. What the hell?
Naruto must have sensed her presence – or hell, maybe Kyuubi had warned him, it wouldn't surprise her – because blue eyes shot open and landed on her immediately. They cleared up, surprise briefly passing through them.
"Oh, baa-chan, why are you here?" Naruto asked in a soft voice, followed by a big yawn. He sat up, bracing himself on his elbow.
Yep, they were definitely at least half naked, because there was no shirt covering their chests.
She kept her eyes firmly fixated on his face and definitely not anywhere near their waist line, when she replied, "Sakura asked me to stop by. She said Uchiha got badly hurt?"
"Oh that." Naruto shrugged and slipped from underneath the sheets. Thank the gods he was still wearing underwear. "Yeah, the bastard got into a bit of trouble with a group out there. Had some nasty cuts, but I took care of them, don't worry. He's not going to bleed out. Even managed to not make him look too much like a mummy!" Proudly he gestured at a bandage wrapped around Uchiha's left shoulder.
"So, you don't need my help anymore?" Tsunade asked, just for confirmation. She couldn't help but grow a bit more suspicious about this entire scene when Naruto walked away from the bed with a slight limp.
Walking like he'd just been fucked, which was not something she wanted to contemplate, thank you very much.
"Nah, we're good, got him all cleaned up," he answered cheerfully, still keeping his voice down as he searched for something in his wardrobe. "Sorry I didn't let you in. We fell asleep."
"Clearly," she said dryly, eyeing the peaceful look on Uchiha's face. Aside from the bandages and the bloody shirt, one wouldn't suspect him to have been hurt in the first place. "You've been sleeping together for long?"
Because what else could they have been doing for Naruto to end up almost fully naked as well? Bandaging someone didn't require one to take their clothes off! Jiraiya would have loved that if that had been the case. Concealing her snort, she considered the scene once more. They couldn't have been together for that long yet, considering she hadn't caught any gossip about them. Not that she was the type to gossip, but it was hard to escape from that when a lot of people at the hospital and even the goddamn Hokage Tower seemed to revel in that.
Uchiha and Naruto together? Yeah, that definitely would fuel the gossipers for weeks, if not months. How were they managing to keep this on the downlow?
"Hm, a couple of months, I think?" Naruto answered to her complete surprise.
"That long already?"
"Well, yeah, think it's been that long." He shrugged. "Didn't really keep track of it, we just started doing it one day."
"Right," she muttered and blinked. She hadn't really thought the two of them to be the type to start having casual sex, but well, to each their own, she supposed. This was quickly approaching too dangerous territory as well, so she was going to stop thinking about it. Still, the doctor side of her couldn't help but comment, "Just remember to stay safe, you know." She gestured half-heartedly at the way Naruto limped when he stepped back, holding a fresh shirt in his hands.
"Safe?" he echoed and winced when he took another step, adjusting his stance. "Oh no, I'm fine. Just have to be more careful."
"Right," she said again, because what else was there to say? "Does Sakura know about this? You two sleeping together?"
"Hm, don't think so. Don't really see the point in telling her about this. It's not really any of her business, you know?"
"She was part of your team, though," she pointed out, frowning slightly. "And she's your friend. She kind of has the right to know about this."
Especially because Sakura still held out hope that Uchiha would ask her out one day. Guess that hope was firmly smashed to bits now.
"I guess," Naruto muttered and furrowed his eyebrows. "I'll talk about it with Sasuke. You need something else, baa-chan?"
"No, it's fine. If you don't think he'll need any healing, then I'll be on my way back," she said.
While Uchiha looked a shade paler than he normally did, he didn't look dangerously hurt either. Naruto might not be medically trained, but he would have brought Uchiha to the hospital if he hadn't been able to take care of him himself, she knew.
"Nah, he'll be fine. He just needs some more rest and stop being such an idiot," Naruto said dismissively, shrugging on the shirt before climbing back into the bed.
"The pot calling the kettle black," she said amused, chuckling when he stuck out his tongue at her.
"Don't overwork yourself too hard, baa-chan."
"I can say the same to you," she couldn't resist the quip and left before Naruto could say anything in response.
So Uchiha and Naruto dating … That was really happening, huh. Uchiha better treat Naruto right or he would discover that Tsunade being a doctor didn't mean she wouldn't beat the shit out of him for hurting the brat.
"I don't get why I have to accompany you for this," Neji muttered; his eyes narrowed as they slid across the different coloured tapestries hanging up.
"Because I need someone to help me carry my stuff and my parents are in Suna, marketing new weapons," Tenten explained patiently for the fifth time.
"Why not ask Lee? He'd have loved to help you out with this, I'm sure."
"I'm sure too, but he's currently training with Gai, remember?" she said, aiming straight for the bed section. "Come on, it's not like I'm going to take that long. I just need to pick out a new futon and some new sheets. Mine look like crap."
"They do look way past their prime," Neji agreed easily, because he just loved to be a jerk like that. "I presume I'll be the one carrying the futon?"
"You presume correctly," she smirked. "Relax, I'll treat you to tea later on."
"I'll be picking the most expensive one on the menu, just so you know," he muttered, following behind her.
"Didn't expect anything less from you."
She stopped abruptly when she reached the first bed on display, swaying forwards when Neji walked straight into her back.
"What on earth is the matter with you?" he asked annoyed, grunting when she grabbed his arm, digging her fingers into his muscles.
"Look who's here as well," she said, nodding to the two men standing a bit further down the aisle.
Neji looked past her. He blinked. "What are Naruto-kun and Uchiha doing here?"
"Good question," she said and approached them.
They had their heads bent together and seemed to be arguing about the rather large bed they were standing in front of. Naruto gestured wildly at it.
"But it's the perfect size for us two!"
Us two. Oh. Erm, was she actually hearing this correctly?
"Are they going to share a bed?" Neji asked bemused. "Why are they sharing a bed?"
"It's way too big, usuratonkachi," Sasuke retorted, scowling. "That size is just ridiculous!"
"It's not too big, do you know how much space you take in when we sleep, you bastard?" Naruto argued in return, which was just …
Huh.
"Shopping for a bed, guys?" Tenten broke up the argument cheerfully.
If she expected them to be surprised or look caught, she was disappointed. While they did look away from each other in favour of glancing at her, they didn't seem perturbed at all.
"Yeah, the bedroom still needs one," Naruto answered and waved at the bed in question. "And I think this one would be perfect!"
"You two living together?" Neji questioned. His face was completely blank, not showing whatever he truly thought about this.
"About to," Sasuke answered shortly. "We're finishing up the last rooms. Naruto insisted on getting the furniture now."
Naruto sniffed and crossed his arms. "The bedroom's already finished, we might as well put everything there already. You promised I could choose the bed if I agreed to not paint the walls orange, bastard! You going back on your promise?!"
Sasuke rolled his eyes to the ceiling. "I'm sure if I did, you'd haunt me about it for the rest of our lives," he droned out. "No, I'm not going back on my promise, damn it, Naruto. I'm just saying this one is way too big."
"The bedroom isn't that small!" Naruto retorted. "This bed would fit perfectly!"
"But it's too big for us!" The last word was bit out with more intensity than Tenten thought the word required, but it appeared to mean something for Naruto, whose face lit up with understanding and he clasped Sasuke's shoulder eagerly, shaking him gently back and forth before Sasuke grunted and shook him off.
"Oh like that! Why didn't you just say so sooner? All right, we'll look at another one then!" Naruto waved at Tenten and Neji. "Bye, see you at the get together next week!"
Tenten could only stand there and watch them compare other beds, back to arguing about the size. Next to her Neji hummed thoughtfully.
"So," he said and paused. "Looks like they are together."
"Looks like it," she said blankly, because how else were they supposed to interpret this conversation?
Choosing furniture together? Arguing about the size of the bed they were going to share? How long had they been together already if they were at the point of moving in together?
A hand with the palm facing upwards moved in front of her, making her blind and stare down at it puzzled.
"I like to remind you about the bet we made three years ago after Uchiha joined our side once more," Neji said primly. "I distinctly recall telling you they would hook up one day."
"They haven't come out officially yet!" she protested, remembering that damn bet now.
He raised an eyebrow, thoroughly unimpressed and jerked his head at the couple. "They're sharing a bed and are moving in together. They're arguing about the size. It's not going to get any more official than this and you know it. Cough up the money."
"God, you're annoying," she sighed, but dutifully retrieved her wallet to fish out the money.
Shit, if she'd known those two would be here, she would have asked Lee or Kiba to help her instead! Why had she accepted that stupid bet in the first place when it was clear she'd been set up to lose it from the start?
"Okay, I came here as fast as I could!" Ino panted, striding into the cottage when the door opened. "What's the emergency?"
She blinked when she realised Naruto was in only his underwear and was about to berate him for opening the door like that, when he cried out dismayed, "I don't know what to wear for my date with Sasuke!"
Was he actually serious right now? Had she cancelled her evening with Sai for this? Where on earth was Sasuke even? Had he left because he didn't want to deal with Naruto's clothing crisis? She could understand that, but wasn't happy about it because it meant she was the one dealing with this right now.
"Are you serious?" she demanded, resting her hands on her hips. "You're worrying about what to wear for a date with Sasuke-kun?"
Why the hell was he panicking about this? This wasn't the first time they were going on a date! Even though they hadn't come out officially yet, by now everyone basically knew Sasuke and Naruto were dating each other. Even if she hadn't overheard Tenten mentioning the shopping trip at the furniture store or hadn't spotted them multiple times at Ichiraku's where Sasuke often paid for their meals, the fact that they were officially living together and were constantly hanging around each other's necks – well, it was mainly Naruto doing the hanging around Sasuke's neck, but Sasuke wasn't protesting it, which said enough – spoke more than clear enough about the change in their relationship. Sakura still had her weekly mourning evening when she lamented losing Sasuke to Naruto.
"Of course I'm worrying about what I should wear, why the hell wouldn't I worry?" he spluttered and finally had the clarity of mind to close the door. "Please, Ino, you've got to help me! You're the best at fashion out of everyone I know."
Okay, she was incredibly flattered – and kind of smug, she wasn't going to lie – that Naruto trusted her fashion sense, but again, why the freaking nerves when they were already together?
"Why are you so nervous about this? Is he going to propose or so?" she asked exasperatedly.
She didn't know how long they had been together, because they were kind of secretive about it, but if Sasuke was going to propose, okay, then she could understand the nerves somewhat. Although she was pretty certain that Naruto could go dressed in rags and Sasuke would still love him. They were that sappy together.
"Propose?" Naruto looked like he was a deer caught in front of a hunter. "Why the hell would he propose on our first date?! I mean, sure, we've been best friends for years, but wouldn't that be a little bit over the top? That would be too much, no?"
But she wasn't listening anymore; her brain stuck on one particular combination of words. "Wait, your first date?" she repeated flabbergasted. "What do you mean, your first date? You've been dating for months already!"
He stared at her. "What? No, we haven't," he said puzzled, his frayed nerves gone for the moment. "Why do you think that? The bastard only asked me out this morning!"
"But you've been living together for months!"
"Well, yeah, because we're both alone and we figured living together would be nice," he stated matter-of-factly.
"But don't you two share the same bed?" she demanded, gesturing at the floor above them where she was pretty sure was their bedroom. "Tenten told me she met you two in the furniture shop a few months ago!"
"Yeah, to sleep because Sasuke and I have nightmares sometimes and sleeping together keeps the nightmares away for the most part," he explained, blushing slightly. He rubbed the back of his neck. "Made more sense to buy a new bed then to make it easier on ourselves."
Ino felt like she had to re-evaluate her entire life. They weren't actually together? Tonight was only their first date? What? What was happening here?
"So," he looked at her hopefully, clasping his hands together, "can you help me out, Ino? I can't fuck up our first date!"
She pinched the bridge of her nose, slowly breathing out. Fine, whatever. She was already here, she might as well … get Naruto ready for his first date with Sasuke apparently. Even though they had been living together for months already. And shared the same bed. And went out for dinner regularly. And Naruto hugged Sasuke on a near daily basis.
But only their first date. Of course.
"Fine, let me take a look at what you have," she gave in, because yeah, she was going to help him out.
Even if she couldn't understand them at all.
Men.
Honestly.
