Author's note: ATTENTION: All right, so basically this idea popped into existence because I was quite pissed off this week and we all know what happens when I get pissed off and my muse is being wonky. Someone has to suffer and that someone is Sakura (again, I do not take constructive criticism for that, I don't like her, not going to change). That being said, I'm a bit iffy about this particular story because if I do post the second part, it will get pretty dark - dark as in Itachi doing dark shit in 'Of Silver Linings and Blue Yonder' dark type of thing.
I also don't want to offend anyone with this story, but I'm trying out a thing where I'll kind of mix some canon stuff with a modern setting (it makes sense in my head). That being said, would there be any interest in seeing the second part to this story or do you think, nah, I've read enough dark shit already? I'd fully understand that by the way. So I leave it up to you, guys. It's up to you whether this gets continued or not.
If you do want a continuation, please do pay attention to the warnings at the end of the next chapter then, because again, rather dark.
That said, here are the warnings for this part: Sakura's pov; modern setting; established slash; mentions of child abuse in the past; mentions of bullying; NOT FOR SAKURA FANS
I hope you'll like this part at least!
Part 1
"Okay, which one?" Sakura looked at her best friend expectantly, holding out two lipsticks. One was a shimmery soft pink, the other a bold red. Both would fit well with the soft green dress she'd chosen to wear tonight, but she couldn't make up her mind which one to pick.
Ino narrowed her eyes, tilting her head to the left as she considered both lipsticks. She was already completely ready; her smoky eyes alluring and her wet red lips looking invitingly as usual. With her off the shoulders black dress containing a slip up to the middle of her right thigh, she was sure to draw lots of gazes tonight. That was her intention of course.
"Go for the pink one," she decided, crossing her legs. She sat on Sakura's bed; her arms stretched behind her. "That one will make you look great."
"All right, thanks," Sakura smiled and turned to her mirror to apply the pink lipstick.
Tonight was their school reunion. It was weird to imagine just how quickly time had flown by; her reunion invitation sent by Hinata had been a strong reminder of that. The Hyuuga family had taken it upon themselves to organise the get together and true to their wealthy status, they had chosen to organise the party in the ballroom of one of the most expensive hotels in their town. That way old classmates who had to make a long trip to get here could simply spend the night in one of the rooms.
Sakura hadn't dared to look up how much a room would cost for just one night; the pictures of the ballroom on the hotel's website had made it more than clear enough already that a room would be way out of her pay grade. Fortunately the Hyuuga family was paying for everything, so all they had to do was show up and enjoy the party.
"Do you know who's going to show up?" she questioned, turning her head from side to side to check her makeup from all angles.
Hinata had been so busy with her work and with organising the reunion together with her cousin that Sakura hadn't found a moment to ask her about the guest list. Sakura had lost sight of most of their former classmates, so she was curious as to who would show up tonight.
"Kiba obviously," Ino replied, referring to Hinata's boyfriend.
Somehow the guy still hadn't been scared off by Neji. Sakura had to give him credit for that show of huge balls, because Neji had always been rather intimidating and he definitely hadn't been Kiba's biggest fan when the dog friend had scraped together his courage to ask out Hinata. They were still together after nine years, so Kiba had refused to let himself be scared off. Admirable actually.
"Last I heard Tenten wasn't sure about it, but Rock Lee was definitely going to come," Ino continued, putting her phone into her purse. "Shikamaru is going to be there, with Temari normally. As for the rest." She shrugged. "No clue. Guess we'll find out when we get there."
"Speaking of, guess we should get a move on, huh?" Sakura remarked, glancing at the clock. "Is Sai here?"
"Yeah, he's waiting for us downstairs; he just texted me," Ino confirmed; a smile automatically unfolding on her face at the mention of her boyfriend.
Personally Sakura still thought they made an odd pair, because they literally had nothing in common with Ino being a fashion model and Sai a painter, her outgoing and him so silent it was a surprise every time he said a word, but Ino was clearly happy with him and that was all that mattered.
"Let's go then," Sakura smiled and picked up her own handbag. "Can't wait to see them all again!"
The Hyuuga family really had outdone themselves with both the location and the decoration. The tablecloths were a gorgeous midnight blue and the golden plates shimmered softly instead of looking gaudy. Instead of sitting down at tables to eat, they had decided on some kind of fancy buffet with a lot of delicious food to choose from and quite some wine and champagne to fill their glasses with. One side of the room had the tables containing the food, the other side had the bar with several bartenders ready to serve the drinks. Comfy seats were available, but most people preferred to walk around and mingle with those they hadn't seen in years.
The ballroom itself was so fancy, it even had its own mini fountain with a cute angel tossing the water out of crystal jug!
"You and Neji really outdid yourselves," Sakura praised Hinata, who blushed, hiding her pleased smile behind her glass of champagne.
The years had been good to her because she no longer dealt with a stutter and while her voice was still slightly shaky, she sounded a lot more confident than during their school years when she said, "Thank you, Sakura. It took us a lot longer than expected to put everything together, but I'm glad we managed it in the end."
"Did you invite everyone?" Ino asked curiously, waving at Tenten when the brunette passed by her.
"Yes, of course," Hinata answered, tugging her purple shawl tighter around her shoulders. "Part of the reason why it took us so long to arrange everything; finding everyone's address wasn't easy."
"Wait, everyone?" Sakura furrowed her eyebrows, looking around discreetly. "Even - "
"Hinata-chan, you look great!"
The too loud, still so very annoying, boisterous voice had Sakura closing her eyes for a moment. She took a deep breath, praying to the gods above to help her keep her patience. Did Hinata really have to invite him?
"You just had to invite the weirdo," she muttered underneath her breath and turned around, watching impassively as Uzumaki strode towards them.
The scars he'd received after the idiot had fallen straight through glass somehow still hadn't faded away one bit, she noticed immediately. The sight of them definitely didn't do his face any favours. He had always looked quite childish as if he'd never grown past seven years old and clearly the years after their graduation hadn't done much for him in that regard. He'd at least lost all that pudge he'd been carrying around, but that was about it.
She wouldn't have minded him so much if he hadn't been so incredibly annoying from the very first moment they had had class together. Loud, obnoxious, dumb, unable to sit still, his mere presence had grated on her the second he'd interrupted class for the first time. After all these years she still didn't understand how the hell he had managed to pass each year when his marks had been so abysmal, but she and others had just figured that the teachers were taking pity on him. Rumour had it that Uzumaki's foster parents hadn't exactly been shy of using the belt, but she had never paid that rumour much attention. If he truly had been abused, he wouldn't have been that loud, she reasoned.
No, Uzumaki was just annoying and she never had had the patience to deal with him. She'd hoped he had moved out somewhere far away, because she hadn't seen him since graduation day, but clearly that had been too much to ask for.
Of course he had to dress in a bright orange shirt as well. She remembered his weird obsession with the colour orange all too well and she could barely refrain from rolling her eyes. He really hadn't grown up at all, had he? She supposed she should be glad he wasn't wearing anything with a frog print on it.
"Thank you, Naruto-kun, I'm happy you could come," Hinata smiled pleased; only the lightest of blushes staining her cheeks. "Neji-kun and I weren't sure if we got the right address."
"You actually didn't," Uzumaki chortled and waved his hand when her mouth dropped open in shock. "But don't worry about it; I got the invitation in the end, so that's all that matters."
She opened her mouth, but Neji called out to her. "Hinata, need your help for a bit."
She excused herself with a soft smile and a quick bow and hurried off to her cousin, who was scowling down at his phone for whatever reason.
"I see you're still fond of orange," Ino said amused; arching an eyebrow.
Uzumaki looked stupidly down at his shirt as if he didn't know he was wearing that ugly bright colour. "Yeah, can't help it," he said lightly and rubbed the back of his head. "Took me a while to find an orange shirt, though. Strangely not a lot of stores offer them for sale."
"I bet," she snorted. "People tend to go for a more classic colour."
"Orange is classic," he sniffed.
Sakura rolled her eyes and he stiffened. "Only to you. What have you been up to these past years?"
Not that she was interested, but her glass was still full so she had no excuse to go to the bar and it looked like Ino for some inane reason wasn't ready to move away either. All the others had formed little groups of their own and Sakura had never been that comfortable butting in into another group without Ino at her side.
"Oh, I'm working at an animal sanctuary," he replied proudly; his eyes shining. "We take in hurt wild animals and fix them up again. Like two days ago, I had to pick up a nest of fox babies after their mommy unfortunately got hit by a car."
"So you're the driver for the sanctuary?" Sakura questioned, tilting her head to the left. If he was just the driver she didn't understand why he sounded so proud about it. Anyone with a driver's license could do that, it didn't make you any better if you happened to drive for a sanctuary.
"Driving is one of my tasks," he replied; his lips thinning slightly. "But I take care of the animals too, look after their injuries and such."
"You managed to get a vet degree?" she asked puzzled. "How did you manage that?"
He narrowed his eyes slightly. "What are you implying?"
"She's implying nothing," Ino said dismissively, shooting a warning glance at Sakura. "We're just surprised that – "
"Shocked that you actually managed to get a degree when you could barely pass classes in school," Sakura cut her off bluntly, ignoring her annoyed hiss. If she wanted to play nice with Uzumaki, fine, but she didn't see the point in doing so with an idiot like him. He'd always been annoying, she wasn't going to pretend she liked him all of a sudden.
"What the hell do you know about my grades?" he snapped and his hands balled into fists. "I passed the classes just fine," he sneered.
She couldn't help but snort, ignoring Ino clucking her tongue in exasperation. "Yeah, only because the teachers were pitying you because they thought you were being hit by your foster parents. Anyone else they wouldn't have let - "
"Naruto? I thought you were going to get us food?"
Sakura's mouth dropped when Sasuke came up behind Uzumaki; a slight furrow between his eyebrows. She'd been crushing on Sasuke ever since she'd been old enough to know what a crush was and holy hell, but the years had been more than kind for Sasuke! His black hair was longer than she could remember it being, still spiky in the back, but with a sideswept pony, making him look even more mysterious than before. His black eyes were still as intense as she remembered them being and his voice was smooth and deep, making her warm from the inside. His broad shoulders in his dark blue suit were breath taking and she hoped to god she wasn't actually drooling, but goddamn, Sasuke had only turned even more handsome – a fact she hadn't thought had been possible!
"Sasuke-kun! It's been so long!" she smiled brightly, twirling a lock of her hair around her finger. She was so glad she'd decided to wear a tight dress tonight! Maybe tonight she could finally spend more time with him.
"I'm surprised you actually came," Ino smiled and sipped from her wine. "From what I can remember you weren't that fond of parties back then."
Sasuke shrugged. "I had some incentive to come," he smirked mysteriously and his left hand came to rest on Uzumaki's shoulder.
His left hand – which was bearing a golden ring.
A stone seemed to drop in Sakura's stomach; something akin to bile making her throat sting. "You got married, Sasuke-kun?" she brought out, forcing a smile on her face. "To whom?"
"To me," Uzumaki of all people grinned smugly, flashing his own golden ring when he raised his hand. "Three months ago actually."
"Congratulations!" Ino said before pouting. "Man, guess that means I really have to give up my daydreams about becoming Mrs. Uchiha, huh?"
Uzumaki squinted at her. "Aren't you dating Sai? Think Shikamaru said something about that last time I heard from him."
She smirked and winked. "Sure I am, doesn't mean I can't have the occasional daydream about another hot guy, hm?"
He said something in response to that, but Sakura wasn't listening. Her heartbeat was incredibly loud in her ears as she stared at that damned ring, at the golden colour mocking her, like it was laughing straight in her face. Uzumaki had married Sasuke? How the fuck had that happened? How the hell had he ever managed to convince Sasuke to give him the time of his day, let alone convince him to marry him? Was this all just some sick joke?
"Are you joking about this?" she demanded, cutting off Ino's story of how she came to date Sai.
Black eyes slid over to her; the disinterested politeness making her clench her jaw. "Why would we joke about that?" Sasuke asked calmly in return. "We're married, what's so hard to believe about that?"
"Because you're you and he's … Uzumaki!" she spat out frustrated, waving at the man in question, who was turning an ugly shade of red. "You don't fit, how could you ever have - "
"All right, this is our cue to leave before this evening turns even more out of control," Ino interrupted her and grabbed her wrist tightly. "Come on, Sakura, there are still some other people we need to say hello to."
"Who says they want to say hello to her?" Uzumaki muttered darkly, grasping Sasuke's hand.
It was like he was taunting her on purpose. Sakura snapped.
"Why don't you be careful around the fountain, hm?" she smiled poisonously sweet even as Ino started dragging her away. Vicious satisfaction flared up inside of her when he paled. "Wouldn't want you to trip and nearly drown yourself in that puddle again like the time when we were eleven, remember? Would be quite embarrassing if you start screaming like a little baby again then."
"Enough!" Ino snapped and this time she tugged so hard at Sakura's wrist that she nearly stumbled; her right heel catching the carpet. "Sasuke-kun, Naruto, I'm sorry, we'll stay out of your way."
"You best do," Sasuke said icily; his eyes boring into Sakura's.
She flinched, her stomach twisting uncomfortably, but before she could open her mouth to defend herself, Ino dragged her away; remarkably forceful for someone wearing even higher heels than she was.
"What the hell is the matter with you?" she hissed when they were in the corner closest to the bar.
Sakura nearly tripped when she was pushed against the wall and she opened her mouth, outraged, but Ino jabbed her finger into her chest.
"You as a doctor know damn well that you can fucking drown in a puddle if you have bad luck and you know very damn well that Naruto only almost drowned, because someone pushed him back then!" she snarled in a low voice, leaning close to Sakura. "He was fucking terrified back then for good reason and you had to throw that in his face now!?"
Sakura scoffed, pushing her away. "He didn't even get knocked unconscious back then! He was just panicking like a baby and if he'd just sat up right immediately, he wouldn't have been in any trouble! Besides, it's been years since then! If he didn't get over it by now, then he's just a damn pussy, honestly."
"He was panicking, because those guys were ganging up on him while other people were cheering them on," Ino said in a dangerously low voice; her eyes flashing angrily. "They fucking held him down and you know that, because you were there, Sakura!"
"Oh, don't act so fucking high and mighty with me now!" Sakura snapped back, jabbing Ino in her shoulder. "You were there too, remember, and you didn't give a shit back then!"
Blue eyes shuttered close and Ino took a stiff step back. "Yeah, I remember, all right. The difference between me and you, however, is the fact that I grew up and apologised to him." She looked at Sakura scornfully. "And if anyone's acting like a baby now, it's you, for being so damn jealous that Naruto married Sasuke-kun. Grow up, Sakura; it's beyond fucking time."
She stormed off, leaving Sakura fuming behind, close to seeing red. How the fuck had things changed so quickly that Ino was now pissed off at her? Why was it her fault that Uzumaki had been such an easy target for bullies? If he would have just kept his mouth shut more often back then, he wouldn't have landed in half of the messes he had landed in throughout the years, she was sure.
But no, now all of a sudden she was supposed to feel sorry for him and apologise? Apologise for what? She hadn't done anything wrong!
"God, fuck you all," she growled and whirled around, marching to the bar. She was going to need something stronger to get to this shitfest of a night!
AN2: So, yes, I leave it up to you, guys, whether you want a continuation or not. Again, this will be a rather dark fic, akin to some of the chapters I've written before in Of Silver Linings. Also going to try out something new, which is not meant to offend anyone, I'm already going to state that.
With regards to my other projects: I'm working on those, but wrangling my brain into the right mindset for those is a bit harder than I thought it would be. Again my apologies for the delay in those, but I will do my utmost best to update them soon!
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the last part! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
