Author's note: Finally after a bit more than a year (many, many apologies for taking so damn long with it! That wasn't my intention at all!) I present to you the epilogue to The Sacrifice and The Sacrificed! If you haven't read these fics yet, you might want to at least read The Sacrificed, as the setting otherwise won't make much sense here.
This is going to be a twoshot, because the first part was already getting damn long and I'm still figuring out how to tackle one particular scene, but I also didn't want to make you wait even longer. So here you have it finally, after more than a year: the sequel.
PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS!
Warnings: Naruto's pov; set around three years after The Sacrificed; wolf Sasuke; attempted sexual assault; violence; established slash; past MPreg; medievalish setting
I hope this is worth the wait!
Part 1
"I won't take long, two hours at most," Sasuke promised, leaning forwards to kiss him. He nuzzled his cheek then, a mischievous glint alighting his eyes. "And then we can spend several hours uninterrupted together. Tsunade and Kakashi already promised to look after Hikaru this afternoon."
"That does sound good," Naruto smiled, turning his head to capture his mate's mouth into another kiss. "Have a good hunt."
"I will," the wolf shifter smirked and smoothly shifted into his wolf form, his bones cracking and bending underneath the strain. He bumped his head against Naruto's shoulder and bounded out of their home, joining his brother and some of their cousins for their next hunt.
"Papa?"
Naruto turned around, a smile automatically spreading across his face when he met his son's sleepy gaze. Deep blue eyes cleared up immediately when Hikaru realised his father wasn't present in the den anymore. The three year old boy sat up confused, tilting his head to the right.
"Father? Where?" he babbled, still shaking off the last shreds of sleep.
"He's gone out on a hunt with Itachi-ji-san, Hikaru. He'll be back soon," Naruto soothed him, stroking his black locks away from his forehead. The wispy locks were getting long again, he noted absently. They would have to trim it soon before the length would start bothering their cub. "Did you sleep well?"
"Hm," Hikaru nuzzled Naruto's palm before grinning up at him. "Walk in woods, papa?"
Naruto smiled, pulling his son into his lap. There was no doubt who was Hikaru's other father. The little boy loved visiting the woods, running in between the trees and jumping over low bushes. If he could get away with it, he would try to splash around in the nearby creek too, though both Sasuke and Naruto still considered him way too young to play in the water there. Sure, it wasn't as deep as the river several miles away from their home, but the underground could still be treacherous and it would only take one misstep for Hikaru to get hurt or worse.
"Of course we can visit the woods," he said and Hikaru's grin widened even further, if such a thing was even possible. "But first you got to have something in your belly!"
Tsunade was the first one they greeted when they left their nest, Hikaru making a beeline for the bowl of rice that Izumi held in her hands. The young woman laughed, handing the bowl over to him when he looked up at her with pleading eyes.
"I have been informed that I'll be looking after the little brat today," Tsunade said airily, sitting down on the smooth rock a few feet away from the nest.
Naruto felt himself colour slightly at the amused glint in her eyes and cleared his throat, rubbing his neck. "You don't have to do it if you don't want to," he mumbled, fascinated by a dandelion swaying in the light breeze.
"Please," she snorted. "Like I would ever do anything I didn't want to do. I don't mind looking after him, you know that. Kakashi also adores the kid."
Naruto smiled, spotting the man in question flat on his back in the field next to them; his arms crossed underneath his arms which acted as a makeshift pillow. Even from this short distance it was easy to see how at ease he looked; lines of worry and stress smoothing over since he and Tsunade had arrived here.
His surprise that particular summer's day at seeing his old family trudge up to the gates hadn't lasted that long. He thought it would have, had expected to be shocked for days to come, but perhaps a part of him had assumed he would see them again someday. Sasuke had been clear about the fact that saying goodbye would have been permanent. Even with the Fae's way of fast travel, it wasn't advised to return to the village secretly. He and Sasuke had courted luck for way too long having stayed there for such a long time and returning to such a place had been out of the question, even with Danzo no longer alive.
Yet when Kakashi and Tsunade had walked up to him that day, both carrying smiles filled with love and overflowing with happiness, Naruto had only been surprised for a little while; acceptance that they were finally here settling in quite quickly. Somehow a part of him had always believed that they wouldn't remain separated and to have his old family with him, to see them so easily accepted by the others, blending in with them as if they'd been spending years together already …
It was everything for someone like Naruto, who had clung to such a small family for so long.
Once, he had asked them whether they didn't miss the village, whether they weren't sad that they had essentially given up their whole lives just to follow him here.
Tsunade rolled her eyes, flicking his forehead and making him hiss and pout at the light sting. "Brat, if I have to choose between you or that wretched village who was all too eager to discard you – that is not even a choice." Her brown eyes were clear and frank even as she pursed her lips. "I will always choose you. I don't regret coming here at all. Besides, who's going to take care of you and your clumsy butt otherwise? There's only so much a wolf can do for you, you know."
"I can't say I miss being sent out on dangerous missions," Kakashi said dryly, but his eyes were solemn. "I like the prospect of living to an old age and if I get to share those years with you and your kid, all the better."
Kakashi had never been that emotional, which had made his answer back then even more meaningful than the hug he'd bestowed on Naruto when seeing him again. Naruto had been worried, of course, how the Uchiha would react to suddenly having two extra humans with them, especially without any warning whatsoever, but the second they knew what their connection to Naruto was, the family had welcomed Tsunade and Kakashi with open arms, treating them as one of their own immediately.
Kakashi often went out to hunt with the wolves and Tsunade often spent time with Deidara, enriching her medical knowledge with whatever the Fae was willing to tell her – which was quite a lot once Deidara had realised just what a captivated audience he had in Tsunade.
"You'll be going into the woods?" Tsunade smiled knowingly; her gaze briefly resting on Hikaru who was stuffing his cheeks full with rice.
"Yes, Hikaru wants to go for a walk," Naruto replied, smiling as well. "You know how he is."
"Hm, will you be going deep into the woods?" she questioned; a slight frown marring her forehead now. In spite of having lived with the Uchiha for several months already, she still wasn't that comfortable with the thought of Naruto and Hikaru going too deep into the woods unless one of the wolves accompanied them.
Truth be told, Naruto also only preferred going deeper into the woods when Sasuke or someone else was with him. He was at ease in the woods, no doubt about it, but he also knew himself and he was still more likely to get lost if nobody was with him. Not his fault most trees and clearings looked the same! The wolves had it easy; they could use their nose to retrace their steps, but that was an ability Naruto didn't have – yet at least.
"Not that deep," he denied and he caught the way her shoulders relaxed just slightly. "Sasuke won't be away for that long anyway, so there's no point in walking too far."
"And I imagine he wouldn't be happy to know you and Hikaru went off on your own," she said dryly.
"That too," he snorted and stretched his arms. Even living with his family hadn't decreased Sasuke's protectiveness.
"I don't care if the woods are familiar to us; something can always happen," he'd insisted that one day Naruto had accidentally walked into the woods further than he'd planned. While not exactly furious, Sasuke hadn't been happy either that Itachi had had to retrieve Naruto and Hikaru, the blond exiting the trees with a sheepish smile.
Since then the unspoken decision had been made that someone had to accompany Naruto and Hikaru if they decided to leave the familiar paths.
"You ready, Hikaru?" Naruto called out once he spotted his son swiping his finger across the edge of the bowl.
Instantly the remainders of the rice were forgotten and Hikaru came bouncing to him; his eyes glittering with unbridled excitement. "Go, papa, now!" he cheered, grasping onto Naruto's hand when he held it out.
"We'll be back soon," Naruto told Tsunade, who just nodded and waved them off. She would probably spend some time with Deidara again before she would take Hikaru off Naruto's hands.
Mikoto was overseeing the repairs to the left side of the gates, which had become a bit mangled after the storm of three days ago. Their homes had been relatively spared thanks to the buffer of the mountain, but somehow the left side of the gate had received the brunt of it and part of it was bending inwards. She nodded at him with a smile when they walked past her, quickly brushing Hikaru's hair and making him giggle.
It being April, it wasn't fully warm yet, but it wasn't that cold anymore either and with the sun shining brightly already, it was a pleasant day for a walk through the woods. Hikaru certainly seemed to think so, eagerly skipping alongside Naruto, his head swivelling back and forth as he took in all the sounds and scents of a forest buzzing with wildlife. His little nose twitched whenever he smelt something particularly interesting and he would putter to the side of the path to get a better sniff of it before he would run back to Naruto, knowing better even at his young age than to go off running on his own.
While he still kept an eye on his son – because even as well behaved as Hikaru was, he wouldn't let him out of his sight – Naruto enjoyed the leisurely stroll as well; his own human nose strong enough to pick up the earthy scent and early blooming flowers. Birds rustled the leaves of the trees when they flew high up in the air; squirrels jumped from branch to branch; bees and wasps buzzed eagerly around, flitting from one plant to the next one. Sometimes he thought he would see a glisten in the corner of his eye, a small Fae fluttering somewhere near them, but he didn't pay them any mind. They left him and Hikaru alone and in return he didn't seek them out, not wanting to aggravate them.
With Deidara being a part of the family, the Fae weren't likely to attack him, but he also didn't want to accidentally anger them and as Deidara had pointed out, some Fae could have a bit of a temper if they knew regular humans could see them.
He smiled when he realised where Hikaru was leading them both: a small clearing with a brook nearby, hidden from view until you got past the tall grass. Sasuke had introduced them to this place; sometimes he and Naruto would come here on their own and enjoy some alone time together. It wasn't that large, but spring and summer saw beautiful flowers dotted all over the place and when they were here during the night, it offered a beautiful view of the midnight sky.
Hikaru loved going to that clearing because it was one of the very few places in which he was allowed to run like crazy without having to stick close to his parents. Which was exactly what he did once they were past the tall grass, making Naruto laugh when Hikaru started sprinting around like crazy, whooping and hollering. He had no idea whose energy Hikaru had inherited; Naruto could be quite energetic, but Sasuke with his wolf nature wasn't exactly lazy either.
"Be careful!" Naruto called out, a habit more by now than an actual warning. Their son had definitely inherited Sasuke's grace for sure; the blond was both happy about that and somewhat miffed at the same time, because it meant that he had two Uchiha snickering whenever his clumsy side reared its ugly head.
He walked to the middle of the clearing, sitting down with his legs crossed, because he knew they would be here for a little while and there was no point remaining on his feet when he could easily get comfortable on the grass. He watched Hikaru bound across the clearing, chasing after a couple of butterflies, huffing whenever they eluded his grasp, and absently he thought he might ask Sasuke to come back here later on. It'd be nice to spend some time here again now that the weather was finally allowing it and –
He registered the crack of a branch too late.
Scrambling up right, his heart already beating quicker, he snatched Hikaru's arm when the little boy ran up to him; his blue eyes, just as blue as Naruto's, wide with fright. Even if his own instincts hadn't been screaming at him already, the obvious fear in his son's eyes told him enough: whoever had made that sound, it wasn't anyone of their family.
"Who's there?" he called out, keeping his voice as steady as he could.
It could be one of the villagers perhaps. There was a town many miles from here, but would one of them really trek this far into the woods? That didn't seem necessary when most of the game they might hunt for in the woods could be easily found on their side of it. Someone was definitely here, though, and it wasn't anyone of their family, so that had to mean it was someone from that village. Why?
A man with straight white hair that reached his chin and a roguish smile stepped from behind a tree; a bow clenched in his hand. The roguish smile turned sinister when his dark eyes landed on Hikaru and instinctively Naruto pushed his son behind him, hiding him from view.
"What do you want?" he demanded, praying his voice wasn't trembling as much as he feared it did. There was something about the way the man stood there, the way he looked up and down at Naruto with that odd calculating look in his eyes that had Naruto's stomach churning in unease; the hairs in his neck rising.
He didn't look like someone who has casually come across them and Naruto tried to decide whether he and Hikaru could be quick enough to run away. He certainly didn't like how tightly the man gripped his bow.
"I've been looking around for you for a while now," the man spoke, his smile twisted, as he prowled closer.
Naruto started to feel uncomfortably a lot like he was prey and he definitely did not like that sensation.
"The others, they all claim I lost my mind," the man continued when Naruto kept quiet. He kept shooting glances past Naruto's legs where Hikaru was clutching onto his papa's shirt from behind. "But I know what I saw, oh yes I do!"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Naruto said tersely.
"The fact that that thing behind you turns into a damn beast!" the man snarled; his eyes gaining a mad glint. "I've seen it happening with my own eyes! He's nothing but a foul beast, a demon from hell!"
"Papa," Hikaru whimpered behind him; his small body wrecked with heavy shivers.
Naruto's heart seemed to stop for a moment and then he forced himself to scoff. "I do not know what you saw, but your eyes are clearly not that best anymore. Behind me is my son, I do not see any beast."
"You think I'm stupid?" the man said scornfully, narrowing his eyes, striding closer. "You think you can trick my mind by lying to me? You may be nothing but a damn witch spreading his legs for the devil, but I know what I saw! And once I bring that devil back to the village, they'll realise I was right and we will not rest until every single one of you devils have been banished from this earth!"
"Like hell you will!" Naruto growled when the man dashed forwards to grab Hikaru. "Hikaru, go now! Go get your grandmother!" he snapped and rammed his shoulder into the man, throwing him off course.
"But papa!"
"Hikaru, now!"
The man snarled when Hikaru dashed away through the bushes and Naruto sprinted past him, knowing his son would be too quick for the guy. If he could just get over the stream a bit further down, he would be able to circle back and –
His breath left him in a painful woosh when he was brought down harshly; the guy throwing himself on top of him. Naruto bucked him off, rolling away but before he could scramble up, the guy backhanded him so badly, stars exploded behind his eyelids and he groaned when pain flashed up.
"Get off me!" he snarled when he felt those foul hands clamping down around his hips and his fist shot out to punch him.
Before his fist could make contact, however, the guy snatched it out of the air and slammed it down hard against a rock, Naruto howling when pain erupted instantly, his arm burning like it was doused in fire. He tried to kick out, but before he could do anything else he was suddenly slammed onto his chest, his arms pulled painfully backwards, and he froze when a hand gripped the back of his waistband.
"You think I'm just letting you go?" the man hissed, pushing all his weight down on Naruto's thighs, making it impossible for him to squirm free. "If you like to be fucked so much like the bitch you are, how about I show you how a real man feels like, huh? Devil can't have all the damn fun!"
It was like all the lights went out. His ears started ringing and his eyes were open, but they weren't seeing anything, they didn't see the grass underneath him, didn't see the bee flying away. They saw nothing, but his ears heard everything, heard the man grunting as he tugged at Naruto's trousers, eager to get them off, and his body felt everything, felt the man's weight, felt the man's disgusting arousal pressing against his arse when the man leant over him, cooing about being a good little bitch for him and spread his legs like the whore he was.
He had to move, had to do something, but his arms were still pulled back, his shoulders screaming at the strain, and he couldn't move, he couldn't twitch, he couldn't –
Growling, high pitched, way too young, and the bastard yelped, cursing when the growling grew muffled.
"You damn beast!"
The grip around Naruto's wrists weakened for just a second. But a second was all he needed and he used all his weight to throw the foul bastard off of him, scrambling away before the guy could grab him again.
And then he saw him: his son, his sweet little boy, was snapping at the man's legs, biting and growling and dancing out of reach every time the guy swiped furiously at him.
"Stay away from papa!" Hikaru growled, gnashing his teeth together, and even though his small wolf frame was far from the impressing form his father possessed, his small length did nothing to restrain his fury and he growled and snarled; all the fur on his back raised as he attacked the man again and again, tearing his trousers to shreds, leaving bloody imprints behind in his flesh.
Hikaru was attacking the man.
"You goddamn devil!" the man screamed. "I'm going to fucking kill you!"
"Don't fucking touch my son!" This time Naruto's fist managed to catch the guy in his cheek before he could fully turn around and the guy went down with a groan.
Knowing this was his only chance, he snatched his still growling son from the ground and started running away, but couldn't help but scream when an arrow grazed his shoulder, blood instantly blooming from the cut. Pain was constantly pulsating in his body now, his shoulders screaming in protest, but he knew that if he stopped running, it would be over.
For both him and Hikaru. Hikaru who was still in his wolf form, his little claws digging into Naruto's arm as he yipped and howled long and loud; the sound nearly deafening this close to Naruto's ears.
Then out of nowhere, a vicious snarl rebounded and Naruto came to an abrupt stop when a sleek wolf with deep brown fur flew past him; lips pulled back in a terrifying snarl.
At once all the strength left his legs abruptly and he fell down heavily onto his knees, bending over Hikaru who was now anxiously licking whatever piece of bare skin he could find on his papa.
"We're safe, Hikaru," Naruto sighed and shuddered, closing his eyes when the unmistaken sound of flesh being torn apart, an agonising scream dying out, echoed through the forest. "We're safe, I've got you, I'm here, we're safe."
When Mikoto walked over to him, still in her wolf form, stinking like blood, he could do nothing but cling to her fur, letting the thick strands hide his tears from his fretting son as he fell apart right there and then.
"Hikaru fell asleep. He's with Deidara and Itachi now."
Naruto could barely bring himself to nod when his mate walked into their nest. He didn't move when Sasuke closed the distance between them, didn't flinch when his wolf inspected the thin cut on his shoulder. It had stopped bleeding now and Tsunade had carefully washed it after Mikoto had guided Naruto back to their home. The arrow had just barely grazed his flesh; deep enough to leave a cut behind, too shallow to be dangerous.
"Izumi and father will go the village later, try to find out whether we need to be prepared for others."
The blond swallowed, staring unseeingly at the nest. The nest where just four hours prior he and Sasuke had been kissing, enjoying each other's touch before the wolf shifter would leave for his hunt. The nest where if everything had gone like it was supposed to have gone they would be lying together now, touching each other in less than innocent ways.
"I don't know how he saw us," he croaked out, his fingers tensing around his kneecaps. He sat huddled into the corner of their home, feeling too cold for such a warm day. "We've always been so careful …"
"It happens sometimes," Sasuke said quietly, sitting on his haunches in front of him. "The humans usually convince themselves that they were seeing things, however."
"Not this one," Naruto said hollowly. He felt hollow, like someone had taken a giant spoon and had carved out his whole insides.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there," Sasuke said quietly, slowly reaching out to caress Naruto's cheeks. Hands which up until two hours ago had been clenched in fury and only Mikoto's cold reassurance that she'd taken care of it had kept the older man inside their little compound instead of roaming around in the woods in search of revenge.
"Not your fault," Naruto said flatly. It wasn't. How could anyone of them have known that a human had been biding his time, trying to track down Naruto and Hikaru after he'd seen the little boy shift?
"Hikaru shifted to protect me," he said; his tongue too thick for his mouth.
"Yes, I know," Sasuke said. "He told me. He was incredibly brave, protecting you."
All of a sudden he no longer felt hollow as anger coursed through his veins and he jumped up, balling his fists. "He shouldn't have had to protect me!" he bit out. "I'm his papa, it should have been me protecting him, not the other way around! He's still just a little boy!"
Sasuke rose up as well, his eyes guarded; his hands loosely at his sides. "You did protect him, you told him to run and afterwards you got him away before the human could hurt him," Sasuke reminded him forcefully, trying to catch his eyes. He failed, Naruto unwilling to meet his eyes. "Naruto, love, there's nothing to be ashamed of."
"Nothing?" Naruto repeated and for some strange reason he felt like laughing even though literally nothing was funny. To quell that insane urge he tugged harshly at his hair, letting the stinging pain anchor him. "Our cub is three years old, Sasuke! He shouldn't have to worry about protecting me! He shouldn't have to shift all because I was – because I was - " Breathing was suddenly becoming more difficult and he choked, his eyes burning. The taste of blood exploded in his mouth when he bit down too hard on his lip.
He gasped when Sasuke's hands clamped down around his shoulders; the unexpected touch making him look at the other man.
"Hikaru did that to protect you. He heard his papa was in danger and he reacted like every cub would have done," Sasuke said; both his voice and his eyes intense. "As a wolf even at his young age he's already quite strong and agile. He's already been play hunting with me and the other cubs. It's just how it is. As a human, you - " He fell silent, frowning, realising too late what he was going to say.
Naruto laughed mirthlessly, shaking off his hands and stepping away from him. "Yeah, I know, as a human, I'm too weak. I'm so damn weak my three year old son had to protect me!"
"Naruto, you're not weak," Sasuke insisted, trying to grab his hand but Naruto just stepped away again. "You're not! You were caught in a bad spot, that was all! Everyone would have been in trouble if someone had grabbed them from behind."
"But not if you're a wolf, right?" Naruto said quietly, but his quiet words seemed to echo in their home nonetheless. "If I'd been a wolf, he wouldn't even have been able to get close to me to grab me."
Because he would have been faster then. He would have been stronger. More powerful. He wouldn't have needed his sweet boy to protect him all because he was too weak to do it on his own.
"What happened out there was on that filthy disgusting excuse of a human being," Sasuke said vehemently. "Doesn't matter that you're human, he should never have touched you or even looked at you at all. Everything that happened is on him, not on you. Don't ever think you're less than us because you're not a wolf. I don't give a damn about that and neither does our family."
This time when he brought his arms around Naruto, pulling him into a tight, warm hug, Naruto didn't push him away, just fell against his chest with a lump blocking his throat and his eyes stinging with unshed tears.
He knew he wasn't to blame – why then did he still feel so weak?
AN2: Rather heavy first part, I know, but I can already promise you that no more crap will happen with the humans. Next part will finally provide an answer to something you've all been wondering about since The Sacrificed ended.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the next part! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
