Costumes and Sweets and Tricks, Oh My
Ten year old Sasuke tugged distastefully at the fake black feathers which made up his costume. The town had decided to celebrate Halloween and had encouraged all the children up to eighteen years old to go Trick or Treating, collecting sweets and letting themselves be scared by actors playing creepy characters.
Not fond of sweets or large crowds to start with, Sasuke hadn't had any interest in joining the others tonight, but mother had insisted that he shouldn't let a fun opportunity like this one pass him by. He didn't get what was so fun about going outside in the cold, going to one house after the other, dressed in a stupid costume, all for the sake of sweets he wouldn't enjoy eating anyways. But mother insisted that it would be fun and his older brother was joining his friends, so Sasuke hadn't had much of a choice.
He had drawn the line at wearing a stupid costume like a wizard or a vampire, though, and had chosen to dress as a tengu instead, because he loved reading mythology and tengu were one of his favourite beings to read about. So tonight he wore a cloak covered with feathers, separate feathery sleeves covering his arms. A fake beak hid the lower part of his face from view, but was still surprisingly comfortable to wear. He had had to promise mother that he would at least try to have some fun for an hour before he would return home, so he resigned himself to wandering through the streets; never straying that far from home.
Mother had at least been merciful enough by stating that Sasuke didn't have to stay with his brother all night, and Deidara had helped by tugging Itachi away before the older boy could suggest that Sasuke should tag along with them. Sasuke considered Deidara far too loud and disruptive, especially with his weird obsession with fireworks, but tonight the boy's bubbly personality had worked in his favour by dragging his brother away, so he wasn't going to complain this time.
Still, he couldn't wait until the hour was over and he could go back home. He had a book waiting to be read and a warm blanket to wrap around himself.
To please mother he had gone as far as ring the door of some houses to collect some sweets, the adults delighted at his costume every time for some reason, and so his basket – a fake pumpkin – had some sweets in it. None of them were things he particularly liked, though, so he was planning on giving them to Itachi, as his brother was fond of sweets unlike him.
He wasn't really paying attention to the many children running around, dodging his own classmates so that they couldn't try to drag him alone, but one voice in particular caught his attention for some reason when he turned into the next street.
"Can I join your group?" A boy dressed in a dark orange fox costume was standing a couple of feet away from Sasuke. He was a bit smaller than most of them and he had really big blue eyes. Instead of just one tail, though, his costume had nine tails attached to it; they must be powered by batteries or so, because they moved on their own slowly, just like an actual fox's tail would. Even the long pointy ears were moving a bit, twitching and turning slightly.
Against his will Sasuke was impressed by the costume. Not only was it quite realistically made, but the nine tails indicated that the boy in question had to know about mythology as well, having chosen to dress as a kitsune. He wondered where the boy had bought the costume, because he hadn't seen it in any of the stores mother had taken him to in search of his own costume.
"Why would you want that?"
Sasuke pursed his lips when he realised just who the boy was talking to. The group in question was made up out of Yamanaka, Haruno and the Hyuuga girl. All three of them were dressed as witches; Hyuuga's head nearly drowning in the large pointy hat she'd chosen to wear. They wore long black dresses and the hand not carrying their overflowing pumpkin bag was holding a magical wand.
Sasuke didn't particularly like either one of them. He didn't care about the Hyuuga girl, because she was shy and generally kept to herself, but Yamanaka and Haruno had the irritating habit of bothering him and trying to pull him into conversations he wasn't interested in. His older cousin, Izumi, said they did that because they had a crush on him, which just made him even more determined to ignore them, because he definitely did not have a crush on either of them. They were far too annoying for him to even consider liking them back.
He should have known they would be here somewhere too, because they had been eagerly discussing which costume they would be wearing last week.
"Because it's fun?" the boy questioned, sounding confused as he tilted his head to the left. He grinned then. "And I like having fun!"
"Well, you can't go with us," Haruno stated brusquely, pushing some of her pink hair out of her face.
"Why not?" he asked bemused. "Your group isn't too big yet!"
"Because you're not dressed for Halloween," Haruno stated frankly and next to her Yamanaka nodded; her own blue eyes narrowed.
"I'm a kitsune," he replied, looking down at himself. One of his tails moved to the front.
"Yeah, but that's not scary," Haruno said snootily. "We're witches, that's scary, but a fox? What a lame costume! Go bother someone else!"
The three girls left, though Hyuuga had to be dragged along, as she kept glancing backwards at the boy, biting down on at her lip. In the end she didn't go against her friends, though, and simply followed them further down the street.
Meanwhile the boy stood there, a forlorn look on his face, even as his hands were clenched into fists.
Sasuke stared at the sky, where stars twinkled gently back at him; a glimpse of the moon pushing past some clouds. He should just ignore the boy as well and make his way home again, because what did it matter that one kid apparently didn't have a group? He didn't even recognise him, so he couldn't be someone attending their school.
Something, however, had his feet moving towards the boy. The kid turned his head, his luminous blue eyes widening a tad at Sasuke's approach. He looked somewhat nervous, but kept standing there, waiting for Sasuke to close the gap between them. This close Sasuke could see just how well made the costume was, because the fur seemed to seamlessly go over into the boy's tanned skin to the point where it became hard to see where the fur ended and the skin started.
"You want to go Trick or Treating with me?" Sasuke offered, concealing a sigh. He wasn't really interested in visiting the houses, least of all with companionship, but the boy looked so sad that he couldn't ignore him either.
The boy's face lit up instantly; the big smile from before returning. "Really? I'd love that! You're a tengu, right?"
Sasuke blinked, a bit tacked aback by the sudden enthusiasm. "Yes, my name's Sasuke."
"Naruto!" the boy introduced himself, grinning, and pointed at himself. "I'm a kitsune! Your feathers are so shiny!" Awe filled his eyes as he looked at Sasuke's costume.
"I like your tails; they look really good," Sasuke offered awkwardly and shuffled with his feet.
"Thank you! You can touch them, I don't mind!" Naruto said and instantly some tails whipped in Sasuke's direction, nudging his hand.
Really, how sophisticated was this costume? The tails didn't move in such a mechanical way, but they had to be driven by batteries, because how else could they move? Naruto didn't hold anything like strings in his hands that could move the tails.
Curious, he reached out and tentatively touched one of the tails, a shock going through him when he felt just how warm it was. It felt like an actual real appendage, generating heat like a real fox's tail would. Well, given how cold it was tonight, it made sense if Naruto's costume had been created to combat the cold.
"Cool, aren't they?" Naruto grinned, tapping Sasuke's hand with one of them.
"Very," Sasuke agreed, because well, it was cool. Tails that could move on their own? Who wouldn't think that was cool? "So you want to come with me?"
Naruto peeked into his basket. "You don't have much yet," he remarked curiously, poking at a chocolate sweet.
"I'm not really into this whole Trick or Treating thing," Sasuke admitted and sighed. "I don't like sweets to begin with, but mother made me promise to at least spend an hour here."
"Well, then I guess it's my job to make sure you have fun!" Naruto announced brightly and grabbed Sasuke by his wrist. "Come on, I know where they have the most sweets!"
Sasuke wanted to remind him that he wasn't interested in sweets at all, but Naruto looked so happy that someone was going to go with him that he couldn't find it in him to protest. Whatever, Naruto was at least better company than most of his classmates, so what harm could it do to join him for now?
"And then I'm going to eat all the sweets," Naruto babbled, skipping next to Sasuke as they walked into yet another street.
Sasuke side-eyed him incredulously. "You can't, you're going to get sick if you eat everything tonight."
"No, I won't," Naruto giggled. "I eat a lot of sweets and I never get sick!"
"Then how are you still this skinny?" Sasuke muttered, eyeing his thin legs and arms.
"I run around a lot," was Naruto's simply answer, which given how he seemed to buzz whenever they stood still for a moment wasn't that hard to believe for Sasuke.
"Where do you live actually?" Sasuke questioned curiously, looking around. They had gone through more streets than he had initially been planning to go through, but he had yet to see Naruto's mother or father pop up.
He had already seen Itachi twenty minutes earlier; the older boy getting his ear chatted off by both Deidara and Hidan. His brother had seemed surprised when he'd spotted Naruto next to Sasuke, but then had smiled, telling Sasuke he would pick him up before the hour was over as it was getting late.
"Oh, I live there." Naruto pointed at the end of the street where a small house was nearly hidden by several trees. It looked old and in need of some repair judging by some of the roof shingles laying askew. It was also a lot smaller than most houses in this street and if Naruto hadn't pointed it out, Sasuke might actually have looked over it.
"I like the forest more, though; people can see me better then," Naruto continued.
Sasuke didn't really know what he meant with that, but he shrugged it off, attributing it to Naruto's quirks. In the past hour he'd come to discover that Naruto was definitely different compared to most children Sasuke knew, going on about how much he loved Halloween because then people couldn't ignore him and how he couldn't wait to show his fox friends his sweets haul for the night. Sasuke hadn't even know there were foxes in the woods, but according to Naruto there were. He'd also pointed out how badly put together some of the children's demon's outfits had been, claiming that was definitely not how they looked like in real life.
It made Sasuke wonder what kind of books Naruto was allowed to read, because mother still didn't want him to read the real scary stories involving the more dangerous yokai.
"Sasuke-kun? I didn't know you were here too!" Haruno's excited voice had both boys whirling around.
Sasuke couldn't help but scowl, hiding a groan just in time. Eugh, of course she would manage to find him after all. At least she was alone now, no Yamanaka attached to her, but that didn't make her presence more bearable.
"What are you doing with him?" she asked when her eyes shifted towards Naruto.
"Trick or Treating," Sasuke answered flatly.
"How do you two know each other?" Naruto wrinkled his nose.
"We're classmates," she snipped and crossed her arms. "And you? I haven't seen you in our school before!"
Ignoring her, Naruto turned to Sasuke with a confused look. "Why would you want to go to school with something like her?" he asked, genuinely perplexed.
It made Sasuke laugh in surprise, especially when Haruno's cheeks turned a bright red.
"At least I'm not pathetic enough that I had to go Trick or Treating alone!" she snapped angrily.
"I'm not alone, though, Sasuke's with me," Naruto pointed out, squinting at her.
"Well, at least my costume is better for Halloween than yours!" she shot back.
Blue eyes narrowed. "Yours doesn't even look real."
"It does so!"
Before more words could be exchanged – or this argument could turn into an actual fight – Itachi showed up, his own basket full.
"There you are, Sasuke," he smiled. His black eyes shifted from Haruno to Naruto before looking at Sasuke. "You ready to go home? It's almost ten thirty already. Mother already texted me."
"Yes, sure," Sasuke agreed and turned to Naruto, who looked a bit downtrodden. "I had fun tonight," he admitted, because well, it was true. Naruto's presence and even his never ending chattering had made this whole thing more bearable.
Naruto beamed, rocking back and forth on his heels. "I had a lot of fun too! Can we see each other again?" he asked hopefully, ignoring Haruno's annoyed hissing.
"Sure," Sasuke readily acquiesced. "I can come visit you tomorrow and give you all the sweets my brother doesn't like."
Naruto giggled, chancing a glance at an amused looking Itachi. "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow!"
The last thing Sasuke heard before he turned around the corner with his brother was Haruno huffing, "Don't think you can just take Sasuke-kun away from me!"
Sasuke rolled his eyes and finally removed his mask, rubbing over his cheeks briskly. Like he would ever give her the time of his day. She was so annoying.
"I see you made a new friend," Itachi smiled and ruffled Sasuke's hair.
Sasuke wrinkled his nose, but was too tired to duck away; the late hour and the amount of walking he had done catching up to him. "Yeah, he's not so bad. He wanted someone to go Trick or Treating with, so I told him he could come with me."
"That was very nice of you, otouto," Itachi praised.
Sasuke shrugged, somewhat bashful, and felt his cheeks heat up a bit. Whatever, he could be nice. And it wasn't as if Naruto had been terrible company either.
When he returned to the street where Naruto lived the next morning, however, he was perplexed to find that he couldn't see the house at all. He went all the way to the end of the street, looked both ways but nothing.
"Are you sure he said this is his address, otouto?" Itachi frowned, looking around as well. "I don't see the small house you described."
"I'm sure," Sasuke insisted and stepped onto the grass that should have led straight to the house. He was standing right next to the large trees which had dwarfed the house before, but the space was empty. "He said he lived here. I remember it because the house was so small compared to the others and the roof needed to be repaired."
But no matter how much he looked, he couldn't find the house. How was that even possible?
"Maybe we should try the next street?" Itachi suggested. "In the dark a lot of houses look the same."
But no, Sasuke was sure this was the right street. Had Naruto lied about his address? But why would he have done that when he had seemed so excited to spend time with Sasuke?
For the last time he walked to the back, passing the fence of the house next to him. In front of him the woods stretched out and he remembered Naruto mentioning how much he loved being in the woods. Maybe he was there now? That didn't explain the lack of the house, though. How could a house simply disappear overnight?
Something caught his attention in the corner of his eye and he turned towards it. Curiosity piqued he walked towards it, paying no heed to Itachi calling him back. When he got to the strange object resting in a bush, ice seemed to replace the blood in his veins when he realised what it was.
It was a witch's hat, ripped to pieces as if an animal had slashed through it. Some pink strands still clung to the fabric as if they had been ripped out. And right below, in the dirt, there were animals tracks, deep grooves as if made by claws, with some orange fur left behind.
The type of orange he'd seen last night, sticking to Naruto's very realistic costume.
Suddenly Naruto's innocent remarks about unrealistic costumes and people not seeing him the night before didn't seem so innocent anymore.
Far from it.
He ran back to his brother, unable to stare at the ripped hat one second longer. Unable to contemplate for one more second what had happened last night after he'd left the two of them behind.
Blue eyes gazed at the retreating back of the tengu boy he had met last night. Pouting, the kitsune chewed on another strip.
Well, he would find him soon again, he knew. He had liked playing with the boy too much to let him go.
His tails twitched, still remembering the warm touch of the tengu the night before. He curled them around himself with a soft sigh, settling back in his nest.
He could wait for him. What was waiting a bit longer, after all, when you already had lived for more than a century?
The End
AN2: Kitsune, man, you can't trust them. Yes, I left it open ended on purpose; you're free to imagine what happens next. Was this fitting enough for Halloween? I let you decide.
I hope this wasn't too awful! Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
