Author's note: This week has been utterly crap to be honest and nothing went like I had planned. So someone's going to have to suffer and that someone is Sakura again. No, I do not take constructive criticism about that; it is what it is. If you're a Sakura fan, best to find another story, because boy, she ain't acting pretty in this one and she won't end up having a pretty ending either.
Also this is going to be a two shot, because damn if this part didn't already turn out long. Plus who doesn't like a bit of mystery around this time of the year? And this time I mean it of the two shot, seriously. Only two parts this one.
Warnings: Sakura's pov for this part; Alternate universe; spoiled, bratty Sakura; established slash; hints of mystery; Sakura is a bit too quick with her hands near money; NOT FOR SAKURA FANS
I hope you'll like the first part!
Part 1
Being an only child from well to do parents meant that Sakura grew up used to getting what her heart desired. She wanted a big bag of sweets? She got it. She wanted to have a particular dark pink tutu that was only being sold in two stores nationwide? Her dad lovingly drove around until they had found the right store.
Their family warned her parents that they should be careful with how much they gave her, before she would grow too spoilt and unbearable. Her parents threw their caution to the wind, however, reassuring them that they knew what they were doing. It wasn't spoiling when she was so well behaved and sweet and always did her best at school! Really, they were worrying about nothing!
As Sakura grew older, however, her desire and taste became a lot more expensive and she wasn't easily content with a simple thing anymore. Why settle for a big bag of sweets when she could try out that new restaurant everyone was raving about? Why be happy with some clothes from a regular shop when you could show up in designer brands instead?
When she turned fifteen, her parents decided it was high time she would learn how to handle money and only gave her some pocket money every week, telling her that if she wanted something now she would have to save for it. While money wasn't an issue for the Haruno family, even the couple now had to admit that their daughter had acquired quite the expensive taste and they could no longer comfortably give her everything she wanted without seeing the credit card bill ranking up higher and higher with each month.
To say that Sakura wasn't particularly happy with the new rule was perhaps an understatement. Having grown used to getting everything instantly the second she pointed at it or mentioned it, it now aggravated her that it would take her time to save up money for whatever had caught her attention. It annoyed her even further that having to save money meant she could only purchase one thing at a time instead of going on a shopping spree like she had grown used to since she was a kid.
So it came as a surprise to no one – save for perhaps her parents – that she would often ask for even more pocket money, claiming it was an advance on the next month. Except that the next month would come and she would come up with the same excuse. When that no longer worked, she resorted to even more drastic measures: borrowing money from her best friends.
It wasn't that strange for best friends to borrow each other money – except that Sakura had this little bad habit of constantly forgetting to pay her friends back, finding excuse after excuse until she ran out of those as well. Eventually she would pay them back at least a little bit to get them to stop bugging her about it. It was something she and her friends regularly argued about, but she would always pay them back just enough to pacify them and have peace be returned to their friend circle.
As the years went by, her mother's purse was also no longer a stranger to her and she regularly took to taking some cash from it without her mother's knowledge, when she found she was lacking some. Mum always had so much cash in her purse anyways, Sakura reasoned, that missing some wouldn't be noticeable.
Except that eventually her mother caught onto that as well and she wasn't pleased about it at all.
"I expect you to return all that money by the end of this week, Sakura!" Mum snapped. "Wait until your father hears about this!"
"Oh please," Sakura snorted and slammed the front door shut, storming off before mum could try calling her back.
She was being such a bitch for nothing! So what if Sakura had taken a bit of money here and there? It was never that much and her wallet was still filled! Besides, she had her bankcards as well, didn't she? Even if she was low on cash, she could still pay with her card, so what was the big deal?
It was all her own fault anyways. If she and dad hadn't insisted on keeping her pocket money so ridiculously low, she wouldn't have to borrow money from mum! As if life had got any cheaper throughout the years! How was she expected to buy her own stuff when she didn't get enough money in the first place?
Stewing, she pulled her phone out of her pocket, ready to vent her anger to one of her friends. She'd already selected the message thread she shared with her best friend Ino when she came to an abrupt halt in the middle of the footpath, grimacing dismayed. Right, she couldn't call Ino, because she was visiting her grandparents for the week. The elderly couple lived somewhere on the countryside, where the phone reception was still quite horrible so she wouldn't be able to talk to Ino until she returned.
Tenten had decided to work fulltime in her family's dojo and was barely available, so she was out as well. Hinata was off with Kiba, her boyfriend, on some sort of world tour. Last Sakura had heard from her the couple had been somewhere in Ireland but with international phone charges, Hinata preferred to send the occasional email instead to keep them up to date. Because apparently they had enough money to visit several countries, but not enough to pick up the international charges for the phone bill, go figure.
"I need more friends," Sakura muttered darkly, staring foully at her phone before shoving it back in her pocket.
She was currently in between jobs as her previous one hadn't really paid that much and she had yet to find another one with decent pay, so she couldn't distract herself by going into work either. However, she also definitely did not want to return home just yet, because she wasn't in the mood to keep hearing mum bitching about money.
Seriously, with how much she went on about it, you'd think they were poor!
Maybe she could crash at Shikamaru's place? She perked up at the thought and retrieved her phone once more, selecting his name in the contact list.
"Didn't expect you to call me," was Shikamaru's idle greeting.
For such a smart guy, he'd never got the grasp on telephone etiquette. "Mum's pissed me off, you mind if I crash at your place for a bit?" she asked without preamble.
"Sorry, that's impossible."
She stopped walking again and frowned, placing her free hand on her hip. "How so? Not like I haven't crashed at your place before," she retorted, a bit annoyed.
Sure, those previous times had been together with Ino when they had both returned from a party with one glass of wine too many, but still! Shikamaru had never made any issue about it before.
"One, that was back before I lived together with Temari," he replied dryly. "And two, we don't have a spare bedroom anymore; her younger brother is staying at our place for a little while."
"Younger brother?" she muttered confused, before vaguely remembering a red haired guy she'd seen leaving Shikamaru's place once. Ino had mentioned his name back then, what was it again? Gaku? Goro? Whatever, didn't matter. "Why is he staying at your place? Doesn't he have one of his own?"
It was quiet for a couple of seconds on the other end of the line before Shikamaru answered neutrally, "Personal reasons. So sorry, but you can't stay here. Why not go to Ino?"
"She's at her grand-. …" she trailed off when the familiar beeping sound let her know he had hung up. "Fucking rude," she mumbled and shoved her phone in her pocket again.
It was a mystery to her how he had ever managed to land an amazing woman like Temari when he was this damn rude in general.
She realised a little while later that she had no clue where on earth she was. She'd been walking around for a while now, she thought, judging by the annoying lingering ache in her feet – should have grabbed her sneakers, instead of her soft pink flats but she'd wanted to leave as quickly as possible – but she hadn't really been paying attention to her surroundings and now she was a bit screwed.
"Well, shit," she sighed, looking around.
She hadn't been in this part of the town before, but judging by the sheer size of the houses here, it was clear that only loaded people lived here. Several houses were gated and had beautifully looking front yards one had to walk through in order to reach the front door. She couldn't help but eye each house in awe, easily able to imagine herself living here. The prices had to be steep, though, for sure. No way such large houses would be sold at the regular market price.
The end of the street bent off to a right corner only; the left side filled with a large field where a few horses were serenely grazing. This was definitely the rich people's part of the town; horses weren't exactly cheap animals.
A dark blue car drove past her, disturbing the peaceful silence and stopped in front of the last house on the right. The engine was shut off and the door opened, revealing a blond haired man who walked over to the gate to manually open it in order to drive his car onto the driveway.
She hurried over to him, ready to ask the stranger what the name of this street was so that she could call for a cab when he turned around and she got a good look of his face. She gasped aloud when she realised he wasn't a stranger after all.
"Naruto?" she asked incredulously; her eyes quickly shooting to the car and the house in question before staring at his surprised face.
"Oh, Sakura, I didn't expect to see you here," he said baffled; his car key clenched in his hand. "What are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here?" she echoed incredulously. "I could ask the same of you! Do you really live here?"
He furrowed his eyebrows lightly. "Well, yeah, this is my house." He jerked his head at the place in question, growing visibly more uncomfortable when she kept staring at him.
She couldn't help it, though! How on earth had Naruto ended up here? His parents hadn't been that well off and while not dirt poor, his family hadn't exactly been on the Haruno level either. A lot of Naruto's school stuff had been second hand, she remembered, so how the hell had he ended up in the rich neighbourhood of all places?
"I thought you'd gone for a teacher's degree?" she asked perplexed. She was pretty sure a teacher didn't earn so much that they could afford a house like this one. If that was the case, she'd clearly chosen the wrong degree!
"What? No, I'm doing freelance work; I design covers for books and such," he replied and cocked his head to the left. "Why do you ask?"
"Because this isn't exactly a house I would expect someone with a teacher's degree to have," she said dryly and crossed her arms. "Freelance work, though – does it pay that well?"
"It pays," he said and shrugged. "So what brings you around here? You visiting someone?"
"I wish." She wrinkled her nose. "Got into a fight with my mum and I'm not in the mood to return just yet."
"That sucks," he said sympathetically. "You're just going to keep walking around then to cool off?"
"It's my mum who needs to chill," she muttered, scowling, before shaking her head. "No, I want to stay somewhere, but Ino's at her grandparents, Hinata is on a world trip with Kiba and Tenten never picks up the phone anymore nowadays. I asked Shikamaru, but apparently his girlfriend's brother is staying over at their place now."
Naruto blinked, something akin to recognition lighting up his eyes for a couple of seconds. "Man, you really don't have any luck now, huh?"
"Don't tell me," she groaned aggravatedly and rubbed her cheeks briskly. Her eyes flickered towards the house, which looked big enough to easily house a family of six if not more. "Hey, you mind if I stay at your place for a little bit?" she asked hopefully.
He hesitated. "I don't know, Sakura. We've never been that close of friends," he said unapologetically.
"I know, but we were classmates." She clasped her hands together and widened her eyes a notch. "Please, Naruto. Just for a little bit. I can't go home right now, mum's driving me nuts!"
He hesitated again, pursing his lips.
"You won't even notice I'm there," she added hopefully, but privately she wondered why Naruto was behaving so difficult now. He'd always been the type to help everyone in need, so much that it had almost become a running gag in their class, so why was he acting so difficult now?
She wasn't asking him the impossible! Just a place to stay for a little while, damn! It wasn't like he would be short on space either. That house could easily contain two or more families!
"Please, Naruto? It's just for a little bit. I can't go home now, I really can't."
The sigh which escaped him made his shoulders sag. "Fine, you can stay for a little bit," he allowed, wrinkling his nose while she cheered.
"Thanks, Naruto!" He might have been utterly useless when it came to class work, but obviously he'd managed to work his way up in life and she was going to benefit from that for at least a little bit!
Really, where else could she go? Their other classmates had all moved out of town, so he was unfortunately her only option if she didn't want to return home soon.
"You go on, I just need to park the car." He waved at her to go through the gates while he opened the car door.
She didn't need to be told twice!
Sakura's mouth dropped open for the second time when Naruto unlocked the door and beckoned her through. The interior of the entrance hall alone already screamed out wealth from the beautiful dark wooden floor to the intricate designs etched into the staircase. Some portraits of beautiful sceneries, like a meadow covered in snow and a sunset at a lake, covered the walls and she could only stare at them in awe while Naruto retrieved a pair of guest slippers for her.
"If I had known that design paid this much, I would have gone for that degree," she laughed, accepting the slippers. "Would have saved me all the stress of a medical degree for sure."
He glanced at her before walking deeper into the house. "I don't live here alone," he said to her surprise. "Design doesn't pay that much either."
"Oh? Who are you living with?" she inquired curiously.
After graduation Naruto seemed to have fallen off the radar and she hadn't heard any news relating to him in years. None of the others must have a clue either, because none of them would have been able to keep quiet if one of them had known Naruto lived this luxuriously.
Her envy was ramped up another level when he led her straight to a spacious kitchen, where the granite counters seemed to gleam in the daylight pouring through the large windows. At least two different expensive coffee makers were lined up against the wall on one of the counters and a large microwave took up a large portion of the counter on the left. Cupboards both above and below the counters offered enough storage room and a vase of red roses had been placed next to the burners.
The wall had dark blue tiles right above the stove, but was elsewhere painted in a soft blue with white curtains framing the windows.
Seriously, how the hell had Naruto managed to do this well in life all of a sudden?! And why did nobody else know about this?
"With my boyfriend," Naruto answered after a pause, dumping his keys, wallet and phone on the counter.
Her eyes widened slightly. "Oh, I had no idea you swing that way." Granted, she'd never been terribly interested in him to start with. "Who is he?" It couldn't be someone from their class, right? One of them would have heard about that for sure!
"Not someone you know," he said dismissively. "He didn't go to school with us if you're wondering. He's from another town."
"So how did you two meet?" she asked and sat down on one of the kitchen chairs, irrationally jealous at how ridiculously soft this one felt. Was Naruto's boyfriend the one who was incredibly loaded then? Must be, if they could afford a big place and luxurious furniture like this.
"I was asked to create some artwork for the company's website," Naruto answered, rubbing the back of his neck.
"That's interesting, what kind of job does he do then?" Something that clearly paid well.
"He's a businessman," was his laconic reply.
Obviously he didn't work in a supermarket, stocking the shelves. Bracing her elbows on the table, she leant slightly forwards and smiled, "So do I get to see him today then? Seeing as you two live together."
"No, he's on a business trip."
She couldn't help but notice how curt each reply was, which stood in sharp contrast to the boisterous, loud guy he had been at school. Raising an eyebrow, she said, "You can give me a bit more information, you know? Not like I can steal him from you," she added teasingly.
She had no clue even how he looked like, because Naruto didn't seem willing to divulge a picture of the mysterious boyfriend any time soon. She didn't even know his name!
He sighed again and ran his hand through his blond hair, which was still just as wild as ever – at least one aspect that hadn't changed. "Sorry, my brain is muddled with all the projects I'm working on. They got me a bit tired. You want some tea?"
She peered at him, taking notice of the very light bags underneath his eyes. Could designing artwork really be that taxing? Wasn't nowadays everything done on a computer anyways? Well, it didn't matter. She had a place to stay at for now and she was going to dwell in the luxury atmosphere clinging to the house.
"Sure, that'd be great, thanks."
Sakura managed to convince Naruto to let her stay the night as well, because he couldn't expect her obviously to go home in the dark! And no, no, he didn't have to go through the trouble of driving her home either; mum still needed some time to cool off anyways, it was fine.
It was rather pathetic how easily he gave in, but seeing as that allowed her to spend the night at the house, she wasn't going to remark on it. She had an absolute blast roaming through the corridors and peeking into the various rooms, trying to guess what their purpose could be. Some were obviously clear, like the bathroom on the first floor and the toilets spread out across the house. There were two guest rooms and one master bedroom, where the midnight blue sheets looked quite inviting. She could only catch a glimpse of the bed through the door which stood slightly ajar, not wanting to alert the blond man to her snooping.
He had shown her the room she could sleep in for the night, but clearly hadn't meant for her to explore further as he hadn't pointed out any of the rooms on their way upstairs. So she'd taken it upon herself to give herself a private tour, seeing as Naruto was so rude as to not offer one.
A bit limited in the rooms that she could explore – most doors were closed and while she dared to open them for a quick peek, she didn't quite dare to actually walk inside, unsure whether her footsteps would be heard through the floor – she soon returned to the first floor where her temporary bedroom was awaiting her at the end of the corridor. She'd been given a spare shirt to sleep in and an extra toothbrush she could use; at least Naruto wasn't that dumb that he didn't know how to take care of guests.
She was about to open the door to her room when Naruto's voice filtering through one of the doors behind her made her pause. Cocking her head, she tiptoed to the room on the right where she could see a smidgen of light creeping underneath the closed door.
"… didn't take it. Last time I took one was …"
Frowning, she leant closer, pressing her ear against the wood, but to her frustration that didn't make it any easier to pick up what he was saying. She could only catch snatches of the one-sided conversation and assumed he was talking to his boyfriend on the phone.
"You know? … here for just a bit. She's fighting with her mother."
Ah, he must be talking about her then. She wondered if the unknown boyfriend – because even needling Naruto further during dinner hadn't given her any serious information – would have problems with her staying the night. He certainly didn't have to be afraid that she would try to seduce Naruto. The thought alone had her nearly snorting aloud.
"… ke, it's fine. It's not a …"
His voice lowered so much that she couldn't make out any word after that, no matter how much she strained her ears. Pressing her lips together, she turned around and went back to her room. She was just going to assume that the boyfriend didn't have any trouble with her staying here, because Naruto didn't show up to tell her so. Not that the boyfriend would have been able to do much about it, considering he was on a business trip.
"Sure would love to know more about him, though," she murmured to herself, flicking off the light before kicking off her slippers. Not knowing a name made it impossible to try looking up the guy online. Naruto had even refused to tell the company's name, which was just stupid in her opinion.
He'd definitely been a lot friendlier back when they'd still been teenagers.
She groaned silently when she crawled into the bed; the mattress seemingly perfectly moulding around her body. If only her parents had bought a mattrass like this one, she would never have problems falling asleep!
In spite of the fight she'd had with mum, she fell asleep easily, buried underneath the soft blankets.
"Don't you think it's time to go back home?" Naruto asked on the second morning they shared breakfast together.
She pouted at him, reluctant to leave and return to her own definitely smaller house. Her own belongings paled in comparison to what she had found here so far. Every piece of furniture, no matter how big or small, seemed to exude pure wealth and luxury; paintings scattered around the place, adding something strangely idyllic to the house. The food was amazing, the bed was absolutely to die for and even the bathroom was almost twice as big as the one they had at home.
Her time here had only made her burn with curiosity even more, desperate to know what kind of guy Naruto was hooking up with who could afford all this expensive stuff. How the hell had Naruto ever managed to land such a rich guy? She dearly wanted to know, but Naruto remained mostly mum about his boyfriend, not even willing to show her a small picture.
If it wasn't for the fact that she knew Naruto couldn't afford all this shit on his own, she would start to think that he'd invented this boyfriend.
"Well, my mum can be in a bad mood for ages," she tried, but as testament that he had definitely changed throughout the years – and not exactly for the better – he cut her off.
"I get that, but Sakura, you were only going to stay for a little while," he pointed out.
"Well, it's only been two nights and a day," she defended herself. "I wouldn't classify that as long, you know?"
"My partner's going to arrive home tonight, so sorry, but you need to go back to your own home," he said, looking almost apologetically.
She chuckled, a bit incredulous. "What, that's the reason why I can't crash here a bit longer? It's not like the place is that small."
He shrugged. "He's not exactly a people person," he said, somewhat amused; the corners of his mouth twitching slightly. "On top of that he's never met you either and he doesn't really like strange people staying here. So sorry, but I'm afraid you'll have to leave today. I'm sure your mum has calmed down by now."
She sighed loudly, stroking a piece of her hair back. "Fine, I guess you're right. She should have calmed down by now. Can you drop me off at my place? I just kept walking without really looking, so I don't know my way back."
"That's rather unlike you," he snickered and nodded. "Sure, I can drop you off. I have to leave in half an hour, though, because I've got a meeting with a client."
"Guess I should get ready then," she declared and rose up, going back to the guest room to pull on her clothes.
It had started raining by the time she was fully dressed and she pulled a face at the droplets sliding down the window. It was a good thing Naruto was going to drive her back; walking through this kind of weather would have been horrendous.
When she pulled the door shut behind her, her gaze was drawn to the room on the right when she saw the door was open. The open door piqued her curiosity because so far it had always remained closed. Drawing closer to it, she wondered what kind of room this could be, receiving her answer when she peeked inside.
It was a study of some kind; Naruto's probably, judging by a few empty canvasses leaning against the wall and the desk covered in various sheets of paper, which all looked to be in the progress of being drawn on. A closed laptop was pushed to the upper left corner of the desk, but it was the small jewellery case on the windowsill right next to the desk that caught her attention at once.
"Well, look at that," she breathed out, gazing in awe at the small collection of rings, necklaces and bracelets resting on the black mousse cushions in the case. Had the mysterious boyfriend given all of this to Naruto? Why the hell couldn't she find a guy like that?
Her attention was in particularly drawn towards a silver necklace with some kind of green stone dangling from it. It was half buried underneath a couple of thin bracelets and some other necklaces and she carefully plucked it out of the case, studying the way the stone shone weakly in the grey daylight. It looked elegant in all its soberness and she weighted it in her palm, surprised by the weight of it.
The corner of something paper like peeked out from underneath the jewellery case and still keeping the necklace in her hand, she lifted up the box; her eyebrows rising when she saw that the paper in question was actually money.
She looked at the door and pricked her ears, but when she didn't hear any footsteps that indicated that Naruto might be making his way upstairs, she quickly snatched some of the bills and stuffed them in her pocket, before placing the box back onto the windowsill. The necklace joined the bills, wrapped carefully in a handkerchief so that the silver chain wouldn't make any noise.
With how loaded Naruto now was apparently, he wouldn't notice the missing bills anyways and if he had buried the necklace underneath other jewellery he couldn't be that fond of it either.
Besides, women look better with necklaces anyways, she decided cheerfully as she made her way downstairs where Naruto was waiting for her in the entrance hall.
A green stone would match her features better than Naruto's; honestly, she was doing him a favour, really, because he definitely wouldn't look good wearing it. He might have even realised that fact, considering how deeply he'd stowed the necklace in the case.
She finished typing a text to Ino, glad that the connection had apparently got better where Ino's grandparents lived. Just three more days and her best friend would be back. She was looking forward to that, because mum was driving her absolutely insane with her insistence that she paid back everything. She'd already returned some of the money, shouldn't that be enough for now? Apparently not for her parents.
A car stopped next to the footpath and she narrowly avoided walking into the door when it suddenly opened. Ready to snap at the idiot for not watching out, she instead froze when she laid eyes on the most handsome man she'd ever seen in her life.
Dark eyes gazed back at her unreadably when the man smiled enigmatically, "Haruno Sakura? You and I need to have a little talk."
AN2: So what do you think? Good enough for the second part or nah? You can be honest. Naruto's behaviour will be explained in the next part, no worries. Again, not for Sakura fans; I didn't have the best of weeks, so I need to expell my frustration somewhere and that "somewhere" is fanfiction. Yes, I'm working on my other projects too, I promise; life is just ... meh, right now.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the second and last part! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
