Author's note: You didn't think I had forgotten about our sweet sunshine boy's birthday, now did you? ;) I did, however, have a hard time deciding which plot I wanted to finish and eventually settled on this word vomit of 4K. Sorry guys, I don't know what I was thinking, but what else is new? .-.

Best Gift of All
"How about we organise your birthday dinner this weekend?" Mum suggested cheerfully. "That way you won't have to worry about going to work the next morning."
"That sounds great, yeah," Naruto agreed, grinning. "Can we eat ramen then?"
She laughed. "Like there was any question about that. Damn, I have to hang up; someone else is calling. Enjoy your day, honey, and we'll see you this weekend, all right?"
"Yeah, I'll see you then." He looked up when Gaara entered the kitchen, still rubbing sleep out of his eyes.
"Happy birthday," the red haired man greeted him with a faint smile and waved an envelope in the air. "Got you a present."
"Oh, what is it?" Naruto asked enthusiastically, eagerly accepting the envelope. The gift card he slipped out of it made him gape. "Are you serious?"
Gaara poured coffee in his mug. "Well, you've been talking about getting a new one for a while now, right? Figured this would make a good gift."
"Good? This is amazing!" Naruto exclaimed, staring at the symbol of the tattoo shop he'd frequented before. "But this is so much, are you sure you - "
He quietened when Gaara lifted his hand in the air. "It's my money, I decide what I wanted to do with it and if I want to pay for your new tattoo, I will do so," he said firmly. "It's a gift, you're obliged to accept it."
"Oh, I'm obliged, huh?" Naruto echoed, snickering, but his eyes remained glued on the gift card for a moment longer. "Seriously, Gaara, this is amazing, thank you!"
The red haired man shrugged and started fiddling with the toaster. "Don't mention it," he muttered, almost bashful.
He grunted in surprise when Naruto hugged him around his shoulders. "Guess this means I can finally finish my design," he said happily.
He'd been working on the design for his tattoo for a couple of months now, having to restart several times because he didn't like how it originally had looked. He was close to finishing it now, actually, but the lack of funds had put that project on a temporary hold. With Gaara's gift, though, he had enough money to get his second tattoo.
"Where are you going to get this one? Did you decide that already?" Gaara inquired curiously, leaning against the counter and sipping from his black coffee.
"Around my bellybutton," Naruto replied, shovelling the rest of his cereals in his mouth. "The main part is a spiral, so it'll work best on my stomach. Might take a couple of sessions before it's completely finished, though, because I'm getting pretty detailed with it."
"I'm sure Karin will love the challenge," Gaara muttered.
That was most likely true. Naruto had been referred to her by Gaara's brother, Kankuro, and the red haired girl had given him his first tattoo on his left shoulder blade. Even though that had only just been his first tattoo, they had chatted a lot throughout the process and they had ended up getting to know each other pretty well already.
He'd seen some of her previous work displayed on the walls in her shop and most of those designs had been pretty detailed as well, so he felt confident that she would be able to help him with his new design too.
His phone pinged throughout the day, congratulatory messages practically pouring into the threads from his friends and family. His godfather, Jiraiya, promised to take him on a city trip to France soon, wanting to show him all the beautiful spots that had inspired him for his books – most likely that meant they would see a lot of places with beautiful women, because his godfather was a pervert like that. Whatever, a city trip to Europe was always appreciated.
Tsunade-baa-chan let him know that a bottle of amazing sake was waiting for him if he could keep his mouth shut around his parents. While not really that much of a fan of sake like the older woman was, he wouldn't say no to a bottle either. Especially because there was just no point in trying to say no to someone like baa-chan.
Dad called him during his break to wish him a happy birthday, because his shift had started earlier than he knew his son would have got up.
It was nice, getting all those messages or getting phone calls from people he'd befriended over the years. Even Neji had texted him a happy birthday and he hadn't seen the guy in months since he had moved several towns away for his job.
Talking about people who had moved away …
"So, got any plans for tonight?" Kiba grinned, startling Naruto when he dropped down in the seat across from him.
He was spending his lunch in the sandwich shop, because Ichiraku's was closed for the lunch shift. There hadn't been any explanation plastered on the door as to why they were closed, only that they would be open for dinner again.
"Yes, it's not every day that you turn twenty-five," Ino teased. She was carrying several shopping bags which she dropped down on the nearest chair with a groan. As soon as her arms were free, she rubbed her shoulder.
"I take it you didn't have to work today," Naruto remarked dryly, eyeing the pile of colourful bags.
"No, Billboard Brow and I managed to get the day off," she replied lightly, fixing her ponytail. "We naturally had to do some shopping; my wardrobe was looking a bit too empty after I did some cleaning last month."
"We should have taken the car," Sakura muttered darkly, halting at Naruto's table. While carrying significantly less bags, she also was quick to dump them on the table, dropping down on the free chair with a sigh as she brushed some hair out of her face. "Happy birthday, Naruto."
"Thanks," he smiled, snatching his drink closer when he saw Kiba eyeing it.
"So, got anything planned?" Kiba repeated, shuffling closer to the window so that Ino and Sakura could drag their chairs to the table.
"Not really." Naruto shrugged. "My parents are going to celebrate it with me this weekend, so that I won't have to worry about going to work the next day."
"That's nice and thoughtful," Ino commented, stretching her arms in front of her for a moment. The multitude of bracelets around her wrists rattled against each other.
"No plans with Uchiha whatsoever?" Kiba asked astonished, his eyes widening a tad. "I thought for sure that you two would be hooking up."
"Ah well, no." Naruto cleared his throat, suddenly feeling quite uncomfortable as he fiddled with his phone – of which the screen had remained disappointedly dark for the last hour since Neji had texted him.
Ino's eyes were too sharp when she asked, "You heard from him yet?"
"No, not yet, but well, the day isn't over yet," he replied, forcing himself to sound light.
He didn't fool any of them with his act. "How long has it been since you last heard from him?" Sakura asked curiously. She plucked a hair tie from around her wrist to start tying her pink hair together.
"Hm, a few days or so," he responded vaguely, keeping his eyes on his phone.
Those few days were actually eight days; he'd been counting them like the pathetic idiot he was. He didn't want to be one of those obsessive boyfriends who needed to know what their partner was doing every minute of every day, but he couldn't help but worry quite a bit about Sasuke's sudden silence.
He and Sasuke had been best friends since they had met when they had been six years old and eleven years later they had admitted their feelings for each other. Everything had always felt natural between the two of them, nothing ever forced. Frankly if Naruto was in a really romantic mood he would even say that the two of them were made for each other; they just clicked from the very first second they had met.
Right before their last year at university, Sasuke had received an offer to finish his studies at a reputable university at the other side of the country. Sasuke had debated about the decision for more than a month before Naruto had bluntly told him to just accept the offer already, because obviously it was a great opportunity. Yes, he would miss Sasuke, but it was only the other end of the country – he hadn't moved to a completely different country. They could still email and call and visit each other if they had several days off.
Their system had worked: they would text every day, call as much as possible and during long weekends either Naruto or Sasuke would make the trip to see each other again. It had only been for one year and what was one year when they would be together for many years to come still?
Then the company of Sasuke's father decided to expand and Sasuke's brother Itachi was sent to the other side of the country as well, to set up the new company together with Sasuke. For Sasuke who had worked his entire life to be acknowledged by his father, this new position was like a gift straight from heaven, showing how much faith his father had in him.
But it also meant that his relationship with Naruto would remain long distance for even longer than they had expected. It wouldn't be forever, Fugaku had reassured his two sons, just until the company was up and running and they had found suitable replacements when the siblings would be ready to return.
Naturally Naruto encouraged Sasuke to accept the opportunity. He'd seen in Sasuke's eyes just how excited he was for this offer, how eager he was to show his father that he had made the right choice when he had given Sasuke this chance. Naruto understood that, so he had told him to go for it.
Because it still was just on the other end of the country and it wouldn't be for forever. One year there turned into two. Two years turned into three then four. This year would mark the fifth year that Sasuke and he were still living miles apart instead of together as they had planned to do so after they had graduated. The fifth year in which he only saw Sasuke in person very sporadically whenever their work would allow it – which wasn't a lot in Sasuke's case.
The fifth year when the most interaction they got was through phone calls, texts and facetime, where they planned where they would live together when all of this was finally over.
It had been three months since Naruto had last seen Sasuke in his high-end apartment. Eight days since he had last heard from him. The last text had been sent nine days ago.
He had tried calling him in the past week, had sent him a couple of texts to ask whether he was okay, but nothing. If something had happened to Sasuke – god forbid – then he was sure Itachi or Mikoto would have warned him. That there was silence on their end settled his fears somewhat, but that still didn't explain why all of a sudden Sasuke was no longer responding to his calls or his texts. Even at his busiest and drowning in projects, Sasuke had always made time for him. Hell, the guy had even stayed up until four in the morning once because Naruto had been panicking so much about his upcoming exams and his last text had been worrisome enough for Sasuke to call him to help calm him down.
While not the biggest chatter, Sasuke had never ignored his calls or his texts on purpose. Now eight days had gone by without even a single text.
Naruto didn't know what to think about that. Was he just being ridiculous now? Worrying about nothing? But then why couldn't Sasuke just text him at least? He hadn't even received a happy birthday from him, even though Sasuke would always be one of the first ones to wish him one, only defeated in speed by Naruto's parents.
"Maybe he's just busy," Sakura offered offhandedly. "He's still working with his brother, no?"
"Or maybe he's ghosting you," Kiba blurted out, hissing when Ino slapped the back of his head hard. "What? It's possible!"
"Like Sasuke-kun would do that!" Ino snapped. "They've been best friends for years and have been together for eight years already, why the hell would he start ghosting him now?"
"Hell if I know, it was just a thought!" Kiba defended himself and threw an apologetic look at Naruto. "Sorry, dude, I shouldn't have said that. It's just weird that you haven't heard from him for so long. But hey, I'm sure he'll call you tonight!" He gave him an encouraging smile.
"You're an idiot," Ino huffed and crossed her arms. "Don't listen to him, Naruto, I'm sure there's an explanation for this. Everyone who knows you two knows that Sasuke-kun is crazy about you."
Sakura wrinkled her nose, but didn't remark on that, fortunately. She'd had a crush on Sasuke for years and even now nobody was really sure whether she'd moved on or not.
"Yeah, he'll probably call me tonight," Naruto nodded, but the annoying gnawing sensation in his stomach said otherwise.
If nothing was wrong then why hadn't Sasuke texted or called yet?
Temari, Gaara's sister, had called in her brother's help at the bar tonight. They apparently expected a bridal shower party and they needed all the extra hands they could get, so Temari had none so subtly ushered Gaara out of the door with her, ignoring his protests that he wasn't interested in being around people tonight.
Given that Gaara had always been more of the lonesome type, that hadn't really impressed his sister at all.
With his friend out of the apartment for the next foreseeable hours, that left Naruto on his own – with a phone that refused to ring or light up with a text.
"I'm being pathetic," he muttered, scowling at himself. He threw his phone down at the table and stalked to the window, looking outside without really taking in his surroundings. Nothing new there after all: another apartment building to his left and the entrance to the local park down at the front. Further in the distance little pinpricks of light lit up the dark as cars drove past on the highway.
"So what if he doesn't call?" he wondered aloud, hugging himself. "He's just too busy like usual."
Except that before Sasuke always had made time for him, no matter how packed his schedule was …
No, he was being stupid. They were no longer seventeen, in need of reassurance so often. They were adults for fuck's sake. So what if Sasuke hadn't found the time to call him yet or wish him a happy birthday? That wasn't the end of the world; there were worse things than that.
Now if only he could convince himself of that, that would be splendid.
Whatever, he would heat up some ramen and install himself on the couch to watch some movies. His friends had promised to throw him a party tomorrow evening as it was Friday then and this weekend he would see his parents again. All in all, not such a bad birthday, really.
He was on his way to the kitchen, ready to rummage through his sacred stock of ramen, when a knock on the door halted him. Frowning, he turned his head. He would assume Gaara had managed to escape Temari's clutches, but he wouldn't knock on the door, seeing as he had a key. One of his friends then? Ready to start the party early? That would be something Deidara would want to do; the firework specialist was enthusiastic enough for it.
"Hey, I was just about to make ramen, you want some too …" Naruto trailed off in shock when his brain registered who was behind the door when he opened it.
"Now that's a sentence I haven't heard before," Sasuke smirked and cocked his head. "Twenty-five years and still not letting go of that garbage food, huh?"
He stood there so casually, dressed in a leather jacket, dark blue jeans and his hands resting in his pockets. Like he did this every day, like he stood in front of this door every evening waiting to be let in.
Like he hadn't gone off the radar completely for the past eight days, like it hadn't been three months since they had last seen each other face to face without the aid of an electronical device.
"You absolute bastard," Naruto choked out before he threw himself at the other man, slinging his arms around his neck and his legs around his waist.
The leather material groaned when Sasuke hastily grabbed onto him, hands arms sliding underneath his butt to support his weight. His familiar scent – a scent Naruto had missed the past three months; something he never wanted to admit – instantly cloaked Naruto and he inhaled greedily, pressing his face into Sasuke's neck even as hot tears dripped down, leaving a fiery hot trail behind on his cheeks before getting soaked up by the collar of Sasuke's red sweater.
"God, I fucking hate you, why the hell didn't you text me for eight days? You didn't call either and I called you several times! Why the hell didn't you answer? Do you know how worried I've been?" Naruto demanded, pulling his head back but still clinging onto Sasuke.
No matter how pissed off he was, he wasn't ready yet to let go of the older man either, which just made him even more pissed off, because that fucking bastard had some explaining to do!
Sasuke at least had the grace to look somewhat ashamed. "In hindsight I probably should have called you," he admitted.
"In hindsight? Are you fucking kidding me?!" Naruto hissed and freed one arm to smack Sasuke on his shoulder. "If you were busy, why the fuck didn't you just say so, you jerk? I've been waiting all day for a text from you, all fucking week actually, and I didn't get anything. You have any idea how I - " He cut himself off, looking away, as the treacherous lump in his throat grew too big.
"I'm sorry, I was preparing a surprise," Sasuke said softly.
"A surprise? One that didn't give you time to text me at least?" Naruto asked scornfully, unwilling to let go of his anger just yet.
He knew it was stupid to remain angry, because who knew when Sasuke had to return? He was wasting whatever precious time they had together by insisting on having this stupid argument, but wasn't he at least a bit justified? He'd been worried sick for eight days and now Sasuke stood here like nothing was wrong?
"I had to make a lot of phone calls to arrange everything," Sasuke said and walked into the apartment with Naruto stilling clinging onto him. He shut the door with his right foot and raised an eyebrow. "Can I put you down for a second now? I want to show you the surprise."
"This surprise better be worth it," Naruto mumbled darkly, but unwound his legs from Sasuke's waist, dropping down onto the floor.
"I hope it will be," Sasuke smiled faintly and retrieved something from his right pocket. He held his hand in the air, dangling a key of all things in front of the blond man.
Naruto furrowed his eyebrows, looking from the key to Sasuke and back. "A key. What's the key for and what am I supposed to do with that?" he asked sceptically.
"Well, I'm hoping that I can convince you to pack your stuff soon, because this is a key to our apartment," Sasuke answered lightly. His black eyes were guarded, however, and sharp as they looked at Naruto.
"Wait, what do you mean, our apartment?" Naruto asked perplexed and grabbed the key, staring at it in disbelief. "Sasuke, what do you mean, this is a key to our apartment? Are you messing with me now? Because if this is your idea of a joke, I will kick your arse, bastard!"
Sasuke grabbed his other hand. "No joke," he stated firmly and nodded at the key. "This is the key to our new apartment. The one you've been sending me pictures of, remember? You want to live there because it's closer to your parents and closer to the outskirts so there wouldn't be so much city noise anymore. So for the past week I've been making calls to see if they still had the apartment and went there to set up some things already. We'll have to go shopping for some furniture still, though, but I figured you wanted to do that to-"
"But you live on the other side of the country," Naruto interrupted him dumbly; the weight of the key paradoxically heavy in the palm of his hand.
"Not anymore," Sasuke smiled and cupped his cheek. "I confess: the other reason why I didn't answer for so long was because I was training my replacement and I wanted to have everything set up from the get-go so that I won't have to go back after tonight."
"Wait, so you're serious? You're staying now? With me?" Naruto could barely bring out the last couple of words; the sounds stuck in his throat as hope cautiously started to build up inside of him.
Sasuke was staying here? He would no longer have to go back to the other side of the country? They would finally be able to live together like they had dreamt of for so long? After tonight – Naruto wouldn't have to say goodbye anymore?
"I'm staying with you," Sasuke promised and leant forwards. "No more long distance. I know it's been five years, but – do you want to live with me?"
"Who's the idiot now?" Naruto choked out and pressed their lips together before Sasuke could say something.
The edges of the key dug into Naruto's hand when he closed it, but he didn't care. Not when Sasuke was kissing him back fiercely, pressing their bodies as close to each other as possible. He couldn't care less about the imprint in his hand when they stumbled to his room, leaving a trail of clothes behind as they undressed each other eagerly, fumbling with buttons and zippers when they wanted to be too quick.
Didn't care about the brief sting of pain before he dropped the key on his nightstand when that meant having Sasuke push him onto his bed, crawling between his welcoming legs. The ache long forgotten when he arched his back upon a slick finger pressing against his entrance, teasing him there before finally slipping inside. One finger became two, then three as Sasuke kissed him again and again, stealing his breath like he wanted to drown in their kisses, like he had missed this as much as Naruto had missed it.
The vague imprint in his hand no longer there when his fingers dragged down Sasuke's back when he pushed into him, stretching him even further around his cock. Even though it had been three months, his body would always be ready for Sasuke, and this time was no different, his muscles quickly relaxing, drawing the other one deeper inside of him.
The gleaming silver of the key was easily discarded in favour of staring into Sasuke's eyes, seeing lust and love mingle there together, making those dark orbs glow before Naruto closed his own eyes, too overcome with pleasure to keep them open.
When he came, it was with Sasuke's name being swallowed by eager lips and fingers digging into his hips; his legs cradling Sasuke's body firmly.
And when he opened his eyes and gazed straight into shining black ones, he leant up and kissed Sasuke once more. Just because he could.
"Happy birthday," Sasuke wished him later on when they had taken a shower and were lounging on the couch, eating pizza that had just been delivered. "Sorry I didn't call you for so long," he said chagrined, looking mad at himself.
Naruto smiled and quickly pecked him on his cheek, wiping away the bit of tomato sauce he left behind. "It's okay, you're forgiven. You ended up giving me the best present I could have wished for."
"Yes, I suppose it's not every day someone gets an apartment," Sasuke snorted, smirking.
"No, not the apartment." Naruto shook his head and shuffled closer to Sasuke, linking their pinkies together. "I'm talking about you. You're the best gift I could have hoped for."
The dark blush on Sasuke's cheeks was worth the eight days he'd spent worrying for nothing. "Usuratonkachi," he huffed, but his arm came to rest around Naruto's shoulders, tugging him even closer.
Naruto grinned and couldn't resist stealing another kiss; their pizza quickly abandoned in favour of even more kisses.
His birthday ended up being pretty amazing after all. He couldn't wait to share many more with Sasuke.
In their very own apartment.
The End
AN2: I don't hate Kiba, but admit it: he'd be the type to blurt out something like that. Also sorry if this is too weird, I basically wrote this in one setting because I'm an idiot with a shit schedule *sweatdrops*
