Author's note: Master classes are kind of starting to kick my arse already and the first week has just ended, so that's promising for the rest of the year. Have this weird oneshot - sorry for the weirdness, guys; my mind is obviously not entirely normal - while I work on the rest of the fics this weekend. Sorry for the delay in those, I promise to finish them as quickly as I can.
I apologise in advance if my updating schedule becomes even more screwed up than before.
Warnings: Naruto's pov; Alternate universe; established slash; implied mature content; angst; scenes out of order; weird fic; drabble
I hope you'll like it - despite the weirdness of it.
Happy Autumn
Autumn was that time of the year when the bursting colours of the summer flowers made way for tree leaves turning red and golden before eventually meeting their ending on the ground. It was the time of dead leaves crackling underneath shoes, of days making way for night quicker and quicker with each day that passed.
That moment when the simmering heat of the summer and its blinding sun retreated in favour of chilly air, grey clouds and its accompanying bouts of rain or even storms. T-shirts and short skirts and shorts were exchanged for jackets and long clothing as people bemoaned the loss of the summer. Days turned darker, greyer, and that reflected on the mood of most people as they mourned the loss of the sun.
Autumn was the time of the year when almost everything in nature went to sleep gradually, a time where flowers wilted and trees lost their leaves; where warm sunlight made way for cold rain. A time of loss and steadily growing darkness.
This autumn promised to be no different from the rest. Trees shed their leaves, painting the roads golden and red, before those leaves would be drowned underneath the torrent of rain that seemed to be unleashed nearly every week. Chilly wind started howling more and more often around the houses. People huddled together underneath umbrellas or sought cover in the stores whenever the clouds decided they weren't quite yet done with unloading their raindrops.
This autumn promised to be different for Naruto. One where a new beginning was waiting right around the corner.
"You should accept the offer."
From his position in the bed, he watched Sasuke stiffen before slowly turned around, still only in his underwear. The rest of their clothes were strewn across the bedroom floor, Naruto's shirt even dangling over the back of the desk chair. Naruto himself was still fully naked, barely covered up to his hips by the thin blanket. Whenever he shifted, he thought he could feel wetness seeping from between his cheeks; the subtle ache in his lower back keeping him reclined against the pillows for now.
"It'd be at least three years," Sasuke said neutrally; his black eyes flat and unreadable. He sauntered back to the bed, sitting down on it, denting in the mattress slightly. "That's a long time. I don't know whether I'll have time to visit."
"I know, but this would be a great opportunity, no?" Naruto muttered, running his hands through his hair, grimacing at the remainder of his sweat he could feel clinging to the strands. "You were the only one chosen in the entire country; that means they obviously see potential in you."
"It would be a great opportunity," Sasuke agreed. His hair glinted a faint black-bluish colour in the dying sunlight. "But three years …"
Naruto smiled; the move cracking something within. "I'll wait for you, if that's what you're worried about."
"You know I hate it when you pretend to be happy," Sasuke said irritated; his left hand twitching as if to reach out and slap the blond. "Stop it."
"I'm happy for you," Naruto corrected him. Finally he sat up and ignoring the ache in his back, he leant across the bed to sling his arms around his boyfriend's shoulders. "Accept the offer, Sasuke. You and I both know you're going to regret it otherwise."
I won't stand in the way of your dream.
The unspoken thought lingered heavily between them.
When Sasuke kissed him next, he knew he'd made his decision.
"Wait for me," Sasuke told him that morning at the airport.
Naruto laughed, ignoring the lump in his throat which was growing bigger with every second that ticked away at the giant clock above them. "Of course I will, I told you before that you're not going to get rid of me that easily," he said teasingly and reached up quickly to peck Sasuke's lips, heedless of the fact that Sasuke's parents and brother were waiting not even five feet away from them.
The three of them were pretending to discuss an article in one of the magazines Mikoto had brought with her; giving the couple some privacy.
"I mean it; three years and I'll be back," Sasuke swore, pulling him closer even though he shouldn't be wasting too much time anymore.
"I know, I won't forget," Naruto replied and blinked when something cold touched his finger before it slipped around the digit. When he looked down, his mouth dropped open in shock at the silver band greeting him boldly.
He looked up, straight into glowing black eyes. "Sasuke, what - "
"Three years and I won't leave you ever again. Three years and I'll replace this ring with a golden version," Sasuke promised, reaching out to cup his face, smiling when he gently pushed Naruto's mouth shut.
"Are you – is this you proposing to me?" Naruto spluttered in shock, flinging his hand in the air. "Uchiha Sasuke, you absolute bastard, are you seriously proposing to me now?"
Dark eyes shone with laughter when Sasuke bent down to kiss him. "It's my promise to return to you," he murmured, which neither confirmed or denied Naruto's question.
The scowl Naruto threw him was half-hearted at best, all too aware as he was of time ruthlessly ticking away. "You better do, because otherwise I'll hunt your stupid arse down, even if I have to take a damn plane to do so."
"Those poor co-passengers," Sasuke teased him because he was a bastard like that. Then his face softened and he kissed him one more time. "I love you."
Naruto blinked; hot wetness stinging the back of his eyes. "I love you too. Go kick their butt."
One last smile, one more kiss, and Naruto was left behind with a silver band around his finger; the weight of which would reassure him for the years to come.
The alarm clock was silenced before it even had a chance to start ringing. Steam fogged up the bathroom mirror as he took one of the hottest showers he'd taken in his life, determined to scrub away every last remainder of sleep clinging to him.
Some leaves stuck against his bedroom window before they were pulled away by the wind; a helpless victim to the cold, sharp breeze. Rain pitter-pattered against the glass soon; rapping against the roof panes. The sky was dark grey, clouds moving almost furiously, promising a stormy day.
"More rain is expected to arrive from the west today, accompanied by some heavy bouts of wind. Please be careful when going outside," the forecast reporter on the radio finished their spiel, right before he cracked two eggs in the pan; the sizzling momentarily overpowering the music on the radio.
Humming, Naruto watched through the window how a young woman urgently pulled her dog along, most likely wanting to be home before the real downpour started. Her dog happily skipped next to her, seemingly intent on jumping into every puddle the little fluffy animal could find.
When Naruto walked outside half an hour later, the rain definitely had grown worse, pelting down harder than before. Drops splattered apart against his forehead and his nose and he raised his head, looking up into the sky as if to find the sun. All he found, of course, was just more rain and dark grey clouds.
He was smiling when he stepped into his car; the silver band around his finger catching the light for the last time.
He had underestimated how tough a long distance relationship would be.
It would have been one thing to still live in the same country, just on opposite sides. He could have worked with that, because at least then they could have regularly called each other. A time difference of thirteen hours, though? That was brutal to work with, especially when the both of them worked.
They tried, however. Called whenever it was possible, sent emails if it wasn't. But it wasn't the same. Time and time again, he would grab his phone, excited to call Sasuke and tell him about the funny day he had had or talk about how the neighbourhood cat had finally allowed him to pet him, before he would realise that it wasn't possible, that it was either the time Sasuke would be asleep or would be at work still.
Six times they attempted to meet up – only twice did they succeed, stolen moments in an American hotel room or their own place when Sasuke had managed to get three days off.
It wasn't easy, missing Sasuke. He hadn't realised just how ingrained into his life Sasuke had become, until he felt like a large piece of him was missing, like Sasuke had taken half of his body with him when he had stepped onto that plane.
Some evenings were spent staring at the silver ring around his finger, turning the metal around over and over again. Sometimes he would take it off, weigh it in the palm of his hand. His finger felt oddly bare whenever he did that, even though the band wasn't that heavy to begin with.
The ring was Sasuke's promise, his oath to return.
It reminded Naruto every time of what he was missing. He wasn't sure whether he liked that.
The rain started to clear up by the time he turned into the parking spot. The scent of wet asphalt followed him until he walked into the spacious entrance hall; his sneakers squeaking against the gleaming white tiles. Around him, other people were either hurrying or leisurely sauntering towards one of the shops available, dragging overstuffed bags and suitcases.
Children ran around, laughing or crying with parents trying to calm them down. Women and men in uniform walked around, chatting amicably with each other, answering questions whenever they were clamped onto by people.
Above him, a large clock announced that it was nine fifteen.
Butterflies started to flutter in his stomach when passengers streamed into the airport hallway; the recently landed airplane releasing its inhabitants.
"If you ever get tired of waiting for me –" Sasuke started, but Naruto cut him off.
"Don't be stupid," he said firmly and kissed him, pushing him into the bed to climb on top of him.
They only had six more hours left; he didn't want to waste that with stupid talk.
Slowly he raised his head when someone halted in front of him. His gaze glided over a long, black jacket, opened to reveal a dark blue shirt. Up over the shirt and its matching tie to gorgeous black eyes, which gazed back with the warmth he'd been missing so much for the past three years.
"You're still wearing the ring," Sasuke remarked; his voice somewhat husky. He looked somewhat exhausted, as if he hadn't slept much for the past week. His hair was longer since Naruto had last seen him, more than a year ago.
He had never looked better to Naruto.
"Well, someone promised me an upgrade," he said teasingly and then couldn't hold himself back anymore. He jumped on Sasuke, uncaring of what other people would think, grinning when Sasuke laughed and caught him just as easily as he had done time and time before, as if three years hadn't passed since they had last done this. His legs easily wrapped around Sasuke's waist, locking together behind his back.
"I'm back," Sasuke murmured, clutching him back just as tightly as Naruto held on to him.
He would never have to let go again after today.
"You're back," Naruto agreed and their mouths found each other in a deep kiss, moulding together like they hadn't been apart for so long. Like they hadn't been forced to miss each other for three years; those stolen moments not really making up for their loss.
For some people autumn might be the time of loss, but for Naruto it was a whole new beginning.
The beginning of him and Sasuke once more. Autumn was definitely his favourite time of the year.
