Author's note: I was in need of writing something light-hearted this week and this is the result. Yes, I'm working on my other projects too, no worries. Figured I would finish this one first, because it's been gathering dust on my UBS stick for a while now. I hope it's not too awful!

Kind of a Big Deal
"Did he tell you anything about who he's seeing?" Mother asked curiously, swiftly slicing the last tomato in pieces before starting on the cucumber.
"No, he didn't mention anything to me," Itachi replied and side-eyed her. "You do realise that the time he told me everything has long since passed, right?"
She huffed amused, brushing their elbows together. "Oh please, he still looks up to his big brother."
"Yes well, in this case he has remained completely quiet about it," he admitted, checking the timer on the rice cooker.
He had just been as surprised as mother and father had been when Sasuke had informed them he was romantically involved with someone and would like for them to meet his partner officially. It was quite an unexpected announcement, more so because Sasuke had never indicated before that he was interested in someone. To be quite honest, Itachi had started to suspect whether Sasuke wasn't simply aromantic, as he had seemingly never been interested in anyone.
Until now.
"Do you know if his partner is male or female?" Mother questioned interestedly. "I can't remember whether he mentioned that."
"He hasn't mentioned it so far," he replied, which was interesting enough on its own. "Although given how he has reacted to girls in the past, I think it's safe to assume his partner is a guy."
"Don't be so sure of that," she said amused. "Remember, those girls back then were the annoying kind."
"The stalker kind, you mean," he corrected her, sighing.
Their family had been gifted with a natural sort of beauty, so they tended to attract attention wherever they went. Some girls had taken it into the extreme, however, and father and mother had come close to actually calling the police on one girl in particular when she absolutely refused to leave Sasuke alone. Her behaviour had been so appalling, even his ever aloof and calm brother had grown incredibly uncomfortable.
It had taken a firm conversation in the principal's office and an unveiled threat to involve the police next time for the girl to finally back off and leave Sasuke alone.
Mother paused, her knife hovering in the air, and she pursed her lips. "Well, as long as his partner isn't the stalker type, it should be fine."
"Our standards really have slipped," he muttered.
She smiled, squeezing his left forearm. "I call it more being cautious as opposed to standards slipping. I'd like to think that I at least raised my sons well enough to find a good partner for themselves."
"Is this your subtle hint telling me I should find someone too?" he asked dryly.
"You still have time, you're not that old yet," she answered teasingly before sobering up. "I just worry a bit because he has never mentioned this partner before."
"He's always been rather private, I wouldn't worry about that too much," he reassured her.
Mother appeared mollified by that, but truth be told, Itachi was curious as well why his little brother had remained silent for so long about his partner.
"So we know absolutely nothing about the person Sasuke is dating," Father concluded with a sigh. "He didn't mention anything? Not even a name?"
They had agreed to meet at their parents' house at seven for dinner and with less than ten minutes to go, father had arrived just in time before the couple would show up. Father had just been as surprised as they had been when Sasuke had informed them about his partner, which really confirmed that Sasuke had somehow managed to remain completely mum about his partner for who knew how long.
Not that Itachi was really that surprised that father knew nothing. Sasuke had always been more of a momma's boy, not finding much in common with Fugaku. If mother knew nothing, then father definitely wouldn't have been enlightened.
"Not even a name or where they met or how long they've been together, nothing," Mother confirmed, brushing her hair over her shoulder. She had curled it loosely for the occasion, making her look even younger than she already did.
"Don't look at me," Itachi said, raising his hands when father's gaze switched over to him. "I know as much as you do."
"How come he's dating someone for the first time and none of us know anything about this person?" Father frowned, loosening his tie. "For all we know, this person has a criminal record."
"I trust that we raised our son better than to date a criminal," Mother remarked, but she pinched her lips together, obviously not quite believing her own words.
"Why else would he keep quiet about this, though? You think there might be something off with this person and that's why he took so long to introduce us?" Father said warily.
She swatted his arm. "First of all, you don't know how long they've been together - "
"Clearly long enough to finally introduce us."
"- and second of all, I really doubt he would date someone he knows we would disapprove of," she continued, ignoring his interruption. "I'm sure he can explain why he kept quiet about this until now."
"That or he'll just ignore the question," Itachi muttered; the corners of his mouth twitching with amusement. His little brother excelled in ignoring questions he didn't want to answer.
With this being the first time he was in a relationship, he had to know their parents would have a lot of questions and he was bound to be prepared for that. Itachi very much doubted mother would get all her questions answered tonight. Sasuke might adore her, but he was still very private and he was never in the mood to answer a lot of questions.
The sound of the front door unlocking cut through their conversation and they all straightened at once; anticipation briefly crossing mother's face before she smoothed it out with a gentle smile.
"Let's go greet them," she murmured at the same time Sasuke called out in the hallway, "Mother, father, Itachi? We're here."
The second Itachi laid eyes on the couple, he had to bite back a laugh. There was nothing funny per se about them, but it was the sharp contrast they formed that amused Itachi. First of all, Sasuke was dating a man, which wasn't that surprising given his general history and reactions to women. But where his brother was both dark haired and dark eyed with the pale skin everyone in their family was blessed with, his boyfriend had the brightest shade of blond hair Itachi had ever witnessed on a person. His eyes were large and bright blue, glistening as he considered them, and his skin was tanned as if he spent a lot of time in the sun.
While Sasuke considered them with a blank face, refusing to let them know what he was thinking at the moment, his boyfriend had a friendly grin playing around his mouth. He was also dressed in light coloured jeans and a white shirt which was coloured a very faint shade of orange while Sasuke had selected his usual combo of dark trousers and a dark sweater when he wasn't in his office.
The two men couldn't be more of a contrast with each other, but they were holding hands; Sasuke not letting go even when his partner bowed.
"Good evening, my name is Uzumaki Naruto. It's a pleasure to meet you," he introduced himself before straightening up once more. "I brought some gifts with me, but Sasuke refused to let me carry them," he said with a straight face.
Only now did Itachi take notice of the shiny purple bag Sasuke was holding in his free hand.
Sasuke scowled. "That's because you nearly tripped when holding the bag before and excuse me if I didn't want to clean sake out of my car."
"Wow, nice going, now you already spilt the beans about one present," Naruto huffed and pouted. "The whole point of gifts is that they're a surprise, you know?"
"Yes, I know, you only mentioned that fifteen times already," Sasuke droned, rolling his eyes.
"Now you're exaggerating," Naruto complained and Itachi was startled when blue eyes suddenly zeroed in on him. "Has he always been this devoid of joy?"
"Damn it, don't drag my brother into this, Naruto."
"Yes, since the day he was born," Itachi said solemnly, smirking when Sasuke directed a glare at him.
"Shut it, Itachi!"
Naruto laughed. "Ah man, I like you already! You remind me of my friend, Gaara!"
"That isn't a compliment, by the way," Sasuke said darkly.
"Don't mind him, he's just jealous," Naruto said serenely.
"Who the hell is jealous - "
Mother cleared her throat gently, cutting him off. Sasuke flushed and looked away and it didn't escape Itachi's attention how Naruto gently squeezed his hand.
"It's nice to meet you, Naruto-kun. I'm Uchiha Mikoto, this is Fugaku, my husband, and Itachi, Sasuke's brother," she introduced them all before smiling even brighter. "I'm glad my son is finally letting us meet."
"Don't make it sound as if you've been waiting for years," Sasuke muttered petulantly.
"Well, we don't know how long you two have been dating," Father pointed out mildly.
"Three months," Naruto answered brightly and glanced at Sasuke, looking amused. "You really didn't tell them at all?"
"Unfortunately he was completely silent until he told us he had someone to introduce to us," Itachi smiled apologetically.
"That's because he wanted me all to himself," Naruto smiled cheekily and winked, making mother chuckle.
Sasuke sighed the sigh of the long suffering. "Are we going to keep standing here? I don't want mother's food to go to waste by having it grow cold."
"Sure, that's the reason," Itachi teased him, ignoring the glower he received in return.
Naruto's nose twitched as he tried to subtly sniff the air. "It does smell delicious, whatever it is that you prepared, Mikoto-san," he praised her, accepting the guest slippers Sasuke handed him.
"Save the compliments for when you've tasted it," she replied amused, beckoning everyone to follow her.
"Anything that smells this great can't taste bad," Naruto insisted smiling.
It didn't escape Itachi's attention how Sasuke linked their hands together, leading the blond to the dining room.
"Considering how Sasuke spilt the beans already, I guess I might as well give you the presents already," Naruto said lightly, gesturing for Sasuke to give up the bag.
Sasuke rolled his eyes, but complied, waving his hand at it.
"For Fugaku-san, I bought a bottle of sake," Naruto started and presented him the bottle; the liquid inside gently sloshing against the glass.
"This is quite the good quality," Father said impressed, turning the bottle slowly around in his hands.
The blond man smiled sheepishly. "To be honest, I don't know shi-anything about sake or so, so I asked my baa-chan which one would be best. She's a connoisseur, I guess you could call her," he chuckled amused.
"That's one way of calling her," Sasuke muttered, which was quite interesting, because it implied that he had already met Naruto's grandmother.
"For you, Mikoto-san, I have chocolate. I hope you'll like them," Naruto went on, smiling a bit embarrassed as he handed over a pale blue box.
Mother opened the lid to peek inside. "These look amazing! Where did you buy these?" she asked; a hint of excitement in her voice.
Naruto might or might not know it, but mother had quite the sweet tooth and his gift of chocolate was definitely a winner.
"Ah, erm," Naruto smiled a bit crookedly, rubbing the back of his neck, "I made those myself. I'm not a professional or anything like that," he hastened to add, "but I do like baking, so I hope you'll like them."
"I'm sure I will, they look amazing," she reassured him.
He flashed her another grin, before dipping his hand in the bag again. This time he turned to Itachi, who accepted his gift surprised. He hadn't expected him to have bought something for him as well.
"Sasuke told me you're a fan of poetry, so I got you one that combines the best poetry of Japan," Naruto explained and paused then, looking thoughtfully for a couple of seconds. "Or well, what they consider to be best. Again, I don't really know that much about poetry either, so I'm just hoping they didn't lie in their advertisement."
Itachi quickly browsed through the book, recognising some of the names in it. "You made a good choice," he told him, making Naruto grin again.
He definitely seemed to smile a lot, which wasn't necessarily bad, but it was quite a contrast to his brother. Sasuke wasn't sullen per se, but he wasn't exactly the type to go around smiling and grinning brightly every day. That just made Itachi even more intrigued how these two had ended up dating – especially when Sasuke had never dated someone before.
"So," Itachi started once they were all seated and everyone's plate had been filled, "I think I speak for all of us when I ask how you two met each other. Was it through work?"
"Oh no, definitely not," Naruto chuckled. "I work as a judo instructor for kids."
"How did you two meet then?" Mother smiled; interest making her eyes light up.
"Nothing special really," Sasuke tried to deflect, but his boyfriend wasn't having any of it to the others' quiet delight.
"Nothing special? Come on now, bastard, we've got a cute meet story!" Naruto protested laughing, slapping his arm. He turned to them, his eyes glistening when he started, "The dojo was closed for three weeks so I went to help out my mum, who has her own coffee shop. And every day without fail, Sasuke would show up at least twice to get coffee."
"I didn't know you liked coffee that much," Father remarked, sipping from his wine.
"Drinking coffee twice a day isn't that much," Sasuke grumbled in defence, but he looked away and his cheeks were growing suspiciously pink.
"See, that's what I thought at first too," Naruto commented. "I figured, hey, he must like mum's coffee a lot, which isn't a surprise because her coffee is amazing. Anyways, so he kept showing up every day and I kind of had my eye on him, but I didn't dare to say anything, because look at him." To stress his point – whatever that point was – he waved at Sasuke, who rolled his eyes.
"I figured no way he's single and no way he's interested in men, so I thought I might as well just enjoy the pretty sight daily," he continued with a teasing grin and a nudge to Sasuke's elbow, who snorted quietly. "But see, the thing is: my mum is really observant."
"Unlike you," Sasuke cut in with a smirk.
This time it was Naruto who rolled his eyes. "Oh shut up. Anyways, my mum apparently paid attention to us every day and after nearly three weeks she told me – excuse the language- to cut the crap and just ask him out already."
He placed his chopsticks down for a moment to wave his hands around agitatedly. "Of course I wasn't about to do that, because like hell was I going to embarrass myself! But she went on to say that while Sasuke is a regular customer, he only stops by the shop once a day, never more than that and that he only started to show up more than once after I started helping her out."
At this point Sasuke was definitely blushing, even as he kept his gaze stubbornly fixated on his plate, ignoring mother's quiet cooing and father's amused look.
"To prove her point – because mum is really stubborn, even worse than I am – she ordered me to stay home for one day." Naruto paused for a few seconds to sip from his own drink before he continued, "I thought she was just seeing things but you don't say no to my mum, so I agreed. Turns out that of course she was right and Sasuke ended up asking where I was apparently."
"Only because the shop was suddenly quiet without your yapping," Sasuke insisted, but he really wasn't fooling anyone.
"Mum told me that if I didn't make a move, she would and knowing her she would make it embarrassing as hell. I told her I would blame her if this blew up in my face, but I decided to go for it anyways, because well, I was going back to the dojo so if he ended up rejecting me, I could lick my wounds in peace," Naruto went on serenely.
"So how did you end up asking him out?" Itachi asked, positively intrigued by now. Of course his little brother would resort to drinking more coffee instead of just admitting he liked someone.
"Well, see, the thing is, Sasuke always orders a black coffee," Naruto said; his eyes glittering like mad now. "So when he came in the next morning, I handed him his coffee and on his napkin I'd written, 'Do you want me to sweeten your life instead?' with my phone number. Then I hid in the backroom and started freaking out about what I'd done," he added sheepishly.
"Clearly it worked," Mother pointed out, smiling. "This is such a cute story! Sasuke, why didn't you tell us this before?"
"It's not such a big deal," Sasuke insisted, not even blinking when Naruto not so discreetly placed a piece of tomato on his plate.
"It is when you haven't dated anyone before," Itachi said lightly, which only earnt him another glare from his little brother.
"Well, not like I've dated before," Naruto said and shrugged. "So I guess that makes us perfect for each other!" he added laughing.
"Now that we've got that out of the way, nii-san, how's that thing going with your colleague?" Sasuke asked innocently, but his eyes were positively gleaming devilishly and his smirk was barely hidden when mother turned to Itachi immediately.
"What thing? What's he talking about, Itachi? Why are both of you so bad at confiding into your mother?" she complained with a huff.
Itachi threw his brother a quick scowl, because he'd definitely done that on purpose; his brother could be a dick like that.
And yes, Sasuke was definitely smirking now, leaning back as he watched mother turn her interrogation tactics onto Itachi instead. Meanwhile Naruto was trying to hide his laughter behind his hand and failing at it spectacularly.
Maybe those two weren't so different after all.
"You could have told me about him, I wouldn't have judged you. You know that, right?" Itachi said softly.
They were doing the dishes; Sasuke having taken up the task of drying them. Naruto was entertaining their parents with funny stories about the children he taught and ones about his friends; occasionally throwing something about his dates with Sasuke in the mix.
"I know," Sasuke snorted and placed the second plate on top of the first one. He appeared contemplatively as he accepted the third plate. "It was just … I guess Naruto's right in a way when he said I wanted to keep him to myself."
He shrugged, ducking his head. "Everything was new to me and I just – wanted to get used to us first before I threw in you lot."
"Well, I'd say for a first partner, you made a pretty good choice," Itachi smiled.
Sasuke nudged him in the ribs, but there was a faint smile playing around his lips as well. "I'm happy with him, nii-san," he admitted softly.
"Yeah," Itachi caught Naruto glancing at Sasuke from his spot on the couch, "I can tell."
Because he had never seen Sasuke this relaxed or happy before.
And when he caught the two of them kissing each other in the garden later on, Naruto's arms wrapped tightly around Sasuke's waist, Itachi decided that for once he wouldn't uphold his big brother duties and he wouldn't tease Sasuke for not being able to keep his hands off his boyfriend for more than two hours.
Only this once, though. Next time was fair game.
The End
