Author's note: I had hoped to have an update ready of You Are Worth Everything last weekend, but the pain in my leg distracted me too much. This week I got some not so good news involving said leg and that kind of put the breaks on my motivation to finish several chapters. I hope to have the other updates ready soon - because I know some have had quite the delay - but I apologise in advance if it takes me even longer, because I'm not entirely in the right mindset yet to write.
I tried to write something this week and that ended up being this: a short ficlet that's tied to "It's the Little Things", though you don't have to have read that one to be able to follow this ficlet. I apologise for the short length and if it isn't that great. I just wanted some form of accomplishment in this otherwise really shitty and awful week.
Warnings: Naruto's pov; canon divergent after chapter 699; mentioned violence and injuries; fluff; established slash
I hope you'll like it, despite the shortness of it.
The Early Bird Gets the Ring
Kurama's chakra dissipated the moment the last criminal was knocked out, crumpling onto the ground as if he was a puppet whose strings got cut. The air reeked of blood as if the earth was drenched with it, but all in all their injuries weren't that bad.
Yes, they were all knocked out; yes, they were bleeding out of several cuts and the occasional hole in their body, but it wasn't as if they were actually bleeding to death. That hadn't been the mission anyways; the assignment had been to track down the group of bandits, rough them up and retrieve the stolen scrolls. As long as the group was brought to the town where they would be sentenced, the client hadn't cared how badly they got roughed up.
Naruto had tried to keep it civilised, but well, they had attacked him first and Kurama had been in a prickly mood to start with.
"Thanks for helping me out," he smiled when they had dropped the unconscious men off at the town and had returned the scrolls.
"I figured I'd help out before you would take another week to find them," Sasuke said dryly, smirking when Naruto whined and punched his arm.
"Bastard, it wouldn't have taken me that long!"
"Yes, that's why you were still searching for them after four days."
"Oh fuck you, nobody said you had to help," Naruto grumbled, but flashed a quick smile at the guards when they left through the town's gates for the last time. "You got somewhere to be now?"
Sasuke eyed him curiously. "Not in particular. Why?"
"I found a nice lake a few days ago, quiet too," Naruto grinned and crossed his arms behind his head. "My mission is over sooner than I thought, so how about visiting that place together with me?"
"Since when are you a fan of silence?" Sasuke smirked.
"I can appreciate silence just fine," Naruto sniffed and pouted. "If you don't want to, just say so, bastard."
"I never said I didn't want to go," Sasuke riposted, which was as good as an acquiescence coming from him.
"Let's go then," Naruto said cheerfully and walked away from the path towards the sound of water that he could vaguely pick up. "Might as well set up camp there."
Evening was about to fall soon, so there was no point anyways in trying to make the trip back to Konoha.
The lake was just as beautiful and peaceful as when he had encountered it a couple of days ago. There were of course insects buzzing around, mosquitos eager to find new prey, but a lit fire kept those pesky bugs at a distance.
Naruto and Sasuke were seated next to each other in front of the lake, keeping close enough to the fire so that the insects wouldn't start bothering them. Their pinkies were laced together and even two years after they confessed, the sight of their hands together made Naruto giddy as hell. Perhaps it was inane, to be so happy about something as silly as lacing fingers together, but he had never forgotten how aloof Sasuke had been for most of his life, how he didn't really liked to be touched by most people.
The fact that he let Naruto hang around his shoulder, grabbed his hand out of his own volition, didn't mind Naruto's surprise hug attacks … It made the blond man feel stupidly fuzzy and warm inside, knowing how much he meant to the stoic dark haired man that he didn't mind doing all this.
Looking up, he discovered that the moon was full, shining its bright white silverish light onto the lake. There was a faint breeze making the water surface ripple, distorting the moonlight somewhat as circles started out small before growing larger and larger, fading out of existence.
This was the most peaceful night they had had together in a while. No missions to take up their attention, no enemies lying in wait, none of their friends who might disturb them. It was the most perfect evening and Naruto knew he wouldn't get another chance like this soon.
Anticipation building in the pit of his belly, nerves and excitement mixing together, Naruto reached into the pocket of his jacket; his fingers closing around the small square box he'd been carrying around for two months so far. He pulled it out of his pocket, turned to face Sasuke and –
The bastard kicked his box straight out of his hand.
"What the hell, you bastard?" Naruto yelped shocked, watching the black box sail through the air before landing in the sand a few feet away from them. "What did you do that - "
"Uzumaki Naruto, would you do me the honour of marrying me?" Sasuke asked smoothly, presenting a ring out of the blue, like he hadn't just kicked Naruto's own ring out of his hand.
Naruto gaped at the ring – at the gold gleaming in the moonlight and the single sapphire stone shining from deep within as if a flame was hidden in the centre – before his eyes shot up to Sasuke, who raised an eyebrow expectantly.
"Did you seriously just kick my ring away to propose as the first one?" Naruto sputtered and couldn't decide whether to be outraged or pleased that Sasuke had had the same idea.
"Should have been quicker, usuratonkachi," Sasuke said mercilessly and waggled the ring in the air. "So, what do you say?"
"I should say no for that stunt you just pulled," Naruto pouted but presented his hand. "But you're lucky I love you even if you can be such an arsehole."
"I know you love me," Sasuke chuckled, but there was no teasing in his eyes, no satisfaction. Just softness as he carefully – almost reverently – slipped the ring around Naruto's finger. "It looks good on you," he murmured, rubbing the side of the ring slowly.
"What doesn't look good on me?" Naruto asked cheekily and quickly stretched out Kurama's chakra to snatch his own proposal ring back.
I can't believe you're using my chakra for that foul person, Kurama grumbled; five of his nine tails swishing back and forth.
"Better start getting used to him soon," Naruto said cheerfully. "Because he's not going anywhere now."
He left the space before Kurama could drag him into an argument and eagerly slipped his own ring around Sasuke's finger.
The band was a simple gold, but he'd chosen a dark red ruby as stone, because it reminded him of Sasuke's Sharingan.
"I love you," he said, watching a soft smile spread out across Sasuke's– his fiancé from now on! – face.
"I love you too," Sasuke murmured and drew him closer with his hand around Naruto's neck.
Under the silent but watchful eye of the moon their mouths met together in a sweet kiss while the stones on their new rings glimmered equally as soft.
The End
AN2: I know it's not much, but I wanted to finish something and this seemed the easiest one to finish. Again my apologies for the short length and I hope to be back with more updates soon.
Please leave your thought behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
