Author's note: My mind's all over the place because of my upcoming exam results next week, which leads to me working on various projects at once. Evidently the wrong ones, but have this while I work on the updates for the other stories. Yes, it's random. I'm sorry. I was in a Hokage Minato mood apparently. The other stories will be updated soon, I promise! My brain is just ... being weird.
Warnings: Minato's pov; canon divergent; mentions of child abuse; established slash; Minato being a verbal badass; flashback

Hokage's Seal of Approval
"All right, you're finished with missions for this week," Minato smiled, placing the report on the pile with the rest. "On Monday I'll see you back for your next one."
"Sure thing," Kakashi said, looking tired. With their recent mission having taken up nearly a week, it made sense that the Jounin wasn't that energetic anymore – especially considering the team he was in charge of.
"Have a good night, Hokage-sama," Sakura smiled and then turned hopefully to the second member of Team Seven. "Say, Sasuke-kun, do you want - "
"Nope," was all that Sasuke said before he turned around and followed Kakashi out of the office, Sakura trailing behind them with a pout.
"She still doesn't have any success, hm?" Minato remarked and couldn't decide whether to be amused or concerned.
As one of the heirs to the prestigious – or infamous, depending on who you asked – Uchiha clan, Sasuke was quite popular with a lot of girls and some boys even as well. His popularity had grown worse throughout the years as he grew up and became even better looking. One of the hopeful girls was his own teammate, Haruno Sakura. Apparently she'd been trying to ask him out for several years now and he kept rejecting her.
Persistence was good to have, but Sakura took it to a whole new level and Minato was growing a bit concerned with how insistent she remained. Clearly Sasuke wasn't about to budge, so why keep trying?
His son wrinkled his nose and crossed his arms behind his head. "Ah no, she hasn't made any progress with it so far. She still thinks she can convince him."
"If she has to convince him, then it's really a lost case," Minato said and shook his head. Maybe he would need to talk to Kakashi, discuss whether something had to be done before the team's dynamics got completely screwed up.
So far Team Seven had always finished their missions without too many issues to speak of, but Sakura's insistence might drive a wedge between them one day and that needed to be prevented.
"Try telling her that," Naruto said lightly and lowered his arms again. "Say, dad, do you think you can come home earlier tonight?"
The unexpected request had Minato frowning a bit. "Did something happen?" he questioned cautiously. "Is something wrong?"
Kushina hadn't shown up in his office today, but it was possible she just wasn't aware yet of whatever had happened. A rare thing that would be, for sure, because his wife was always aware of everything, but still, exceptions could happen.
"Why do you immediately assume something bad must have happened?" Naruto complained, scrunching up his nose.
"Because the last time I was asked to come home sooner, your mum and I had to have a meeting with Yamada-san after you painted her shed a bright orange," Minato replied dryly. A part of him had been impressed back then, that Naruto had managed to paint that entire shed in less than an hour considering its sheer size.
"That old hag was asking for it and you know it," Naruto huffed. "She's the one who started it by calling me a waste of space because of the fluffy bastard."
"Language, Naruto," the older blond chided him, but he couldn't be really angry. Naruto had a point: the old woman had started the conflict by being rude to his son first. He didn't really blame him for wanting revenge after he'd heard what had happened.
Kushina especially hadn't been happy when she found out the truth. Yamada should count herself lucky that she'd got away from it with just a painted shed.
"Oh, please, I could have used worse words; Tsunade-baa-chan taught me plenty of those," Naruto snorted, leaning his hands on the desk.
"I don't know why I ever thought it was a good idea to let you hang out with Tsunade-sama," Minato sighed, rubbing his forehead.
Tsunade was an incredible woman and highly skilled, one of the three famous Sannin, but she had an incredibly foul mouth at times that would make even the most hardened missing nin blush a beet red.
"She thinks I'm adorable," Naruto grinned, preening even.
"That's because she wasn't the one who had to raise you," Minato grinned back, chuckling when Naruto placed his hand on his chest and gave him a mock hurtful look.
"Oh, you wound me so, father. Whatever did I do to deserve such a slight?"
"Being an absolute menace," Minato informed him solemnly.
"I'm sure mum would love to hear you said that, considering you always say I take after her the most," Naruto smirked; his blue eyes gleaming mischievously.
"If I go down, I take you down with me," Minato warned him, smiling when that made the younger man cackle. "So, any particular reason why you want me home sooner?"
"I've got some news that I want to tell both you and mum at the same time," Naruto explained and the note of excitement in his voice was hard to ignore.
"Good news, I assume?"
"Good news." Naruto nodded and clasped his hands together behind his back. "So, do you think you can come home earlier tonight?"
Minato considered the tray of paperwork he still had left to do, mentally went over each one to check which were the most urgent ones, and then nodded, smiling. "Yes, I can come home earlier."
"All right! Thanks, dad! I'll see you tonight!"
Naruto basically zipped around his desk to give him a tight hug around his shoulders before he rushed out of the office, calling out, "Hey, bastard, wait for me, you promised me ramen, remember!"
Shaking his head fondly, Minato turned his attention back to his own work. He could call out to Naruto to make sure he wouldn't spoil his appetite for dinner, but that would be a moot point. Bowls of ramen or not, he always managed to eat his mum's food. It was a good thing he'd inherited Kushina's metabolism as well, because with the amount of ramen Naruto could eat, people would assume he belonged to the Akimichi clan instead.
He pursed his lips when he picked up the letter his assistant had dropped off earlier. It was written by Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage. While Konoha and Suna got along rather well in the last ten years, there had been a time when Minato hadn't been able to even stand the sight of the Fourth Kazekage after he had witnessed how brutally he'd treated his youngest son. As a matter of fact, it had almost come to blows between the two Kage when Minato hadn't been able to help himself and had remarked on Rasa's treatment of Gaara.
When Naruto had still been a kid, he'd often joined Minato when he visited other villages; only the ones Minato had considered safe enough, of course, unwilling to put his son in any kind of danger. Everyone with ill intentions would love to get their hands on the son of the Fourth Hokage, especially when that son was the Jinchuuriki of the Nine-tailed Demon Fox.
Suna had been considered relatively safe enough and Naruto had loved accompanying him there when he found out that the Kazekage had a son of his age, which meant he could play while his dad did all the boring stuff. They had just returned from their third visit to Suna when Naruto had breached a topic that had nearly caused a war to unfold between the two villages.
"Daddy, are you going to send shinobi after me too to test me?"
Minato halted abruptly, waving off the two ANBU who'd served as his guards. "Go on, we'll be fine."
One of them, his former pupil Kakashi, tilted his head to the left but inclined his head and beckoned for his partner to follow him. After a short bout of hesitation the second ANBU complied and they continued their trek through the corridor, leaving them behind at the door to the office.
Minato ushered his son into his office and closed the door behind them. "Naruto, what do you mean with that?"
The seven year old boy blinked up innocently at him and started chewing on the string of his orange hoodie. "Are you going to send shinobi after me too to test me?" he repeated, though it didn't make any sense even after hearing it the second time.
"Why would I send shinobi after you?" Minato questioned, bending down to be more at his son's height.
"Because Gaara's dad sends shinobi after Gaara to test him," Naruto replied bluntly, gazing at him with wide eyes. "To see how strong the Ichibi is."
Minato felt instantly cold as if he had been doused with ice water when he realised the implication behind Naruto's seemingly innocent comment. "Naruto, what exactly do these shinobi do? Did Gaara tell you that?"
Naruto shrugged. "He says that every week some will try to attack him. He says that his dad wants to see how strong the Ichibi really is, so the shinobi keep attacking him until he reacts." He pursed his lips and frowned. "Gaara is unhappy; they keep trying to hurt him and he doesn't want to hurt him, but the Ichibi doesn't listen and so he attacks them and hurts them really bad."
"Right," Minato said feebly and it took every last bit of his restraint to keep his face composed. "Listen to me, Naruto: what Gaara's dad does, is not right at all. He shouldn't be sending shinobi after his son to try to get the Ichibi to react."
Suna had the reputation to be rather ruthless, but never in a million years had Minato assumed that that streak of ruthlessness would stretch out to their own children. What was Rasa thinking, sending assassins after his youngest son, all just to test his son's control over the Ichibi? Never mind how deplorable attacking his own son was, did he have no regard whatsoever for the safety of his village either? What if Gaara couldn't keep the Ichibi under control and started rampaging around?
Kushina had had quite some trouble controlling the Kyuubi at times before the fox demon had become sealed into their son; he didn't dare to imagine how much more difficult it was for a child to keep a murderous bijuu under control.
"So you're not going to send shinobi after me?" Naruto asked warily; his eyes slightly narrowed.
"No, Naruto, I'll never send shinobi after you to hurt you or to try to get the Kyuubi to react," Minato said solemnly and squeezed his son's shoulders gently. "You won't ever have to worry about that."
Blue eyes glazed over slightly; a sign, Minato had come to realise early on, that meant that the Kyuubi was talking to Naruto inside his mind. Whatever the nine-tailed fox said, it made Naruto giggle and cover his mouth.
"Kyuubi says nobody is strong enough anyways to take him on," Naruto grinned.
It was humorous in a morbid kind of way that Naruto seemed to easily converse with the nine-tailed fox demon as if he was just another friend and not a gigantic chakra being that was capable of destroying entire nations once let loose.
The older blond thought it was safer not to antagonise the Kyuubi by reminding him that the Uchiha clan seemed more than capable of taking him on, considering it was partly thanks to their help that the Kyuubi hadn't been able to rampage about after the seal had weakened during Kushina's labour.
"I'll keep that in mind," he smiled instead and rose up. "You want me to talk to Rasa-san about his treatment of Gaara next time we meet up?"
"Yes, please, Gaara really doesn't like it," Naruto said, frowning.
No, Minato thought grimly, I wouldn't like being attacked by my own father either.
His next meeting with the Fourth Kazekage had almost ended in a declaration of war when he had made it clear in no uncertain terms what he thought of Rasa's treatment of Gaara. The older man had been ready to attack him, but as powerful as he was, Minato had had the upper hand thanks to his speed.
And thanks to the Kyuubi.
He hadn't meant for his son to witness the confrontation, had ensured he would be off playing with Gaara somewhere else, but Naruto had inherited his mother's curiosity. Right as Rasa had gathered Gold Dust to attack Minato, a large reddish chakra arm had promptly slammed Rasa down to the floor. Naruto had stood right in the middle of the doorway, his entire small body covered with the Kyuubi's chakra; his pupils slitted to resemble those of a fox and the birthmarks on his cheeks thickened visibly.
It had been the first time he'd used the Kyuubi's chakra and Minato could only be grateful that he had used the chakra to protect him instead of losing control over it. It had also made it quite clear just how powerful the Kyuubi was when he was able to overpower the Fourth Kazekage with just one arm.
Naruto's fierce display of protectiveness had forced Rasa to calm down at least and when evening had fallen, he'd finally agreed to start treating his son as his child and not as a weapon he could exploit. Getting that promise out of him hadn't been easy, but Minato's subtle threat that he would otherwise see to it himself that Gaara would find a better family had made Rasa realise that the Yellow Flash wasn't one to be crossed.
Suna might have the Ichibi, might have ruthless shinobi, but Konoha had Minato and the Kyuubi. It was a fight Suna would have never won and Rasa had at least been smart enough to realise that.
As the years passed by, Suna and Konoha started cooperating more and more, but it was a stretch to say that Minato would consider Rasa a friend. Naruto and Gaara were best friends, however, and their friendship was the main reason why the two villages kept cooperating.
With a sigh, Minato opened the letter, wondering what Suna wanted now.
"So you've got no clue either what he wants to tell us." Kushina's shoulders slumped in disappointment and he smiled, kissing her nose.
"No, sorry, love. All he said was that he has good news to tell us both," Minato said and shrugged off his robes. "Asked me whether I could come home earlier for it. He's not here?"
"Hm no, though I don't think he'll take that long anymore," she said, pushing her red hair out of her face. "Dinner's ready in an hour and he knows about that, so he should be here soon."
No sooner had those words left her mouth before the front door opened and Naruto stepped inside; his cheeks rather pink as if he had run all the way here. He wasn't out of the breath perse, though, and Minato tilted his head to the right.
"Everything okay, Naruto?"
"Yep, sure, everything's all right, definitely!" Naruto replied, jittery as hell and that only made Minato more suspicious.
What good news could possibly have his son be this nervous? He was shuffling his weight from one foot to the other, playing with the zipper of his orange black jacket; tics he usually only displayed when he was highly nervous.
Kushina crossed her arms. "So you're going to tell us what the good news is finally? You've kept me on edge all day," she complained, but worry was lurking in her purple eyes as she took in their son's behaviour.
"Right, erm, let's go sit down, okay? That's more comfortable than standing here, no?" Naruto suggested; his voice an octave higher than usual.
That really didn't do anything to soothe Minato's worries, but he followed his wife and son to the living room, highly curious to whatever could have his son displaying so much nervous energy. He expected him to start walking up the walls literally any second now.
Naruto waited until his parents had sat down on the couch, choosing to keep standing himself. He linked his hands behind his back and rocking back and forth on his heels, he cleared his throat and announced, "So, erm, I'm seeing someone. As in, you know, erm, being a couple." His eyes were as wide as saucers now and the pink colour in his cheeks deepened further, travelling down his neck.
"Oh really?" Kushina perked up and clapped her hands together. "That's amazing, honey, I didn't know you liked someone! Who's the lucky girl?"
He was in a relationship? Minato concealed a sigh of relief. Really, if that was all, why was Naruto so nervous? Because this was his first relationship? Did he think they would be mad at him? He was eighteen; he was free to date whoever he wanted – as long as they were decent, of course.
"Erm, it's not really a girl," Naruto hedged nervously; his gaze flickering down to the floor and oh.
Oh.
Kushina was stunned for a moment before she recovered. "Oh, it's a boy? That's wonderful too, sweetheart!"
"It is?" He peered up at them both, biting down on his lower lip.
"As long as you're happy with him, it doesn't matter to us," Minato reassured him, smiling, and leant forwards, resting his hands between his legs. "So, who is the lucky guy?"
He hadn't really expected his son to be gay, but he wasn't bothered by it either. So what if Naruto liked guys? As long as his kid was happy, he couldn't care less whether he was dating a boy or a girl. The guy better treat Naruto right, though, or he would discover where Minato's reputation hailed from.
"Thanks," Naruto smiled, sounding relieved. His face a bright red by now, he scratched the bridge of his nose and admitted, "It's – I'm dating Sasuke. Sasuke and I – we're together."
"Huh." Minato blinked and leant back against the couch. "Well, that explains why he keeps rejecting Sakura-chan."
Guess the pink haired girl never stood a chance if the youngest Uchiha heir was gay.
"She doesn't know about it?" he inquired curiously. He didn't think she would be that rude to keep flirting with Sasuke if she knew he wasn't single anymore.
"No, you're the first one to know," Naruto answered and paused. "Well, except for Sasuke's parents and his brother, of course. They know too, but that's it."
"How long have you two been together already?" Kushina asked; her eyes gleaming excitedly.
"Around two months," Naruto smiled and it was both proud and slightly embarrassed. "We wanted to make sure first that it would work out, you know? Before we let others know."
"Well, we definitely need to celebrate this!" she declared and sprang up, clapping her hands together once more. "My baby's first relationship, I can't believe it! You two are so adorable together, I should have seen this coming!"
"Ma," Naruto whined embarrassedly, but as always he was no match for her strong hug and impetuous enthusiasm as she dragged him into a tight embrace, kissing his forehead.
"We'll be having ramen tonight," she grinned and ruffled his hair. "And we expect to see Sasuke-kun for an official dinner somewhere next week, all right?"
"Thanks for including me," Minato commented dryly.
She winked at him. "Always. Now I need to start preparing dinner and you're going to tell me all about who asked who out on a date, where you went to, where you've been spending time together, is he a great kisser?"
"MA!"
Minato only shrugged when Naruto threw him a desperate look before he was dragged off to the kitchen by his mother. There was no stopping Kushina once she got fixated on something and unfortunately for Naruto, his new relationship was now her current focus.
The youngest Uchiha heir, though … Well, Naruto had good taste, he had to give his son that. A bit aloof, but Minato assumed Sasuke was different when he and Naruto were alone. Besides, Minato thought he would be rather aloof as well if people kept bugging him about a date.
Now perhaps he should think about trying to save his son at least from his mother's relentless questioning. She could put even the most hardened ANBU captain to shame with her interrogation techniques.
It seemed that now both the parents were aware of their relationship, Naruto and Sasuke saw no reason any longer to keep it hidden from the rest of the world. Barely two days after Naruto's admittance, the village was abuzz with the news after someone had seen the two boys kissing on Training Field C and since then the news had gone through the village like fire.
Minato had never realised just how big of a gossipers his own staff was until he caught two women giggling about how cute the couple looked together. They scampered off with reddened cheeks the second they realised the Hokage was standing right behind them.
Shaking his head, he concealed a chuckle and continued his way to his office, ready to tackle the remainder of the documents needing to be signed. Sometimes he wondered whether those papers duplicated themselves when he wasn't looking, because they appeared never ending.
Danzo cut him off just a few feet away from his office and Minato managed to hide his grimace just in time. He and the council had a strained relationship at best; the old members believing they knew best even when they definitely didn't. Minato only listened to their advice out of politeness and most of the time he didn't heed it, knowing his own solutions would work out way better.
The one which got the most on his nerves was Danzo, especially after what he had tried to do nine years ago.
"Good afternoon, can I help you?" Minato asked politely, halting in front of the older man.
One black eye – the other one hidden behind bandages as always – peered at him sternly. "Some … interesting news has come to my attention this morning," Danzo said silkily; his smile thin and barely there.
"What kind of news would that be? That Suna wants to sit together with all the Kage for the first time in decades?" It was a bold suggestion of the Kazekage, especially when the Land of the Mist wasn't exactly fond of corresponding with the other countries. At the same time there was some merit behind the idea as well, because it would pave the path to some actual peace finally.
"Not that." Danzo waved his hand impatiently as if batting away a fly. "Do not act oblivious, Hokage-sama, it does not suit you."
Minato smiled thinly. "Say what you have to say, Danzo. I've got work left to finish."
The council member narrowed his eye and leant heavily on his cane. "I'm talking about the news that your son is currently dating one of Fugaku's sons."
"Oh yes, marvellous news that," Minato said cheerfully, resting his hands in the pockets of his heavy robes. "He told me and my wife about it last week. I'm glad he's feeling free to finally show the rest that they're together. They make such a lovely couple, don't you think?"
"A lovely couple?" Danzo sneered, stamping his cane down once. "Your son being in danger of being influenced by the Sharingan is lovely to you? A strange way of looking at it."
"Naruto isn't in danger of that, as you should well know given the eyes and ears you have around the village," Minato pointed out finely. "I trust Sasuke-kun would never try to harm Naruto in any way, least of all by trying to take over control of the Kyuubi."
"You have far too much faith in that clan, Hokage-sama," Danzo said through clenched teeth. "Especially when they have shown in the past that they were ready to retaliate against the village! What makes you think this isn't just another plot to take over control?"
"Retaliate?" Minato lifted an eyebrow unimpressed. "You mean, them reacting to the fact that you tried to turn one of their own against them? If memory serves me well, you tried to convince young Itachi that he should kill his entire family."
"They were planning a coup!" Danzo hissed, his hands tightening around the cane. "I was acting on behalf of the village!"
"No, you were acting on behalf of yourself, thinking that you knew better," Minato corrected him with a cold smile. "And they tried to stage a coup in the first place because of your ridiculous demands that they be pushed aside. Notice how they didn't try to take over control again, as you state, after I talked with them? They've been loyal to the village ever - "
"Loyal?" Danzo scoffed. "Do not make me laugh, Hokage-sama. They wouldn't know what the word loyal means if you were to present the definition to them in a dictionary. As the Hokage of this village you should set aside any silly emotions and realise how dangerous it is to let your son get his head filled with nonsense. If you won't act, then I will see it as my duty to - "
"To what?"
Danzo quietened when Minato closed the distance between them. "Don't forget, Danzo: I'm the Hokage, not you. Naruto is my son, not yours. You don't have any right to decide anything, least of all after you tried going against me and the Uchiha in the past. The only reason you're still walking freely is because the Third Hokage asked me for the favour."
Leaning even closer, Minato went on icily, "Never forget for even one second that your freedom is thanks to the same man you tried to dethrone. The council only exists still because I let you. You come near my son or near the Uchiha – any of them – at all and not even the Third Hokage will stop me this time."
"Is that a threat, Hokage-sama?" Danzo whispered, stilling when a kunai was pressed against his side, hidden from the guards' view by the Kage robes.
"No, that is a promise," Minato said quietly. "The only approval they need is of their parents, not of you or the council. Next time you try something, remember this: you might have ears and eyes stationed everywhere, but I'm faster, Danzo."
He stepped back, plastering a cheerful smile on his face. "With that said, enjoy the rest of your day, council member. I'm looking forward to hearing the council's advice regarding the Kage matter later this week."
When he walked into his office, he found Naruto lounging on his chair, spinning around in it. He stopped and smiled sheepishly when he noticed his father approaching the desk.
"Hey dad, was waiting for you," he grinned and jumped out of the chair. "You think you and mum are free to have that dinner on Thursday? You know, with Sasuke, so that you can interrogate the poor bastard?" he teased.
Minato smiled and ruffled his hair, ignoring his half-hearted protest. "Of course, we always have time to meet our son's boyfriend."
"Eugh, you're going to be so embarrassing, I just know it!"
Let Danzo try to do something, Minato thought as he and Naruto exchanged more quips. He would love any excuse to finally get rid of that old bastard and defending his son's relationship was as good a reason as any.
Because he might be Hokage, but he was a dad in the first place and he would make everyone regret the day they decided to mess with his son, council member or not.
His son's happiness would always matter more to him than what others might say.
The End
AN2: All I'm saying is: I'm pretty sure all that shit with the Uchiha wouldn't have happened if Minato had survived ... I hope it wasn't too awful!
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
