Author's note: So this might actually be the strangest idea I've had so far? *clears throat* I don't know, this is something that popped up in my mind while I was doing the dishes (do not ask) and somehow it ended in this? I tried something new, but ... Not sure whether it worked out. I'll let you be the judge of this weird thing.

Hush, Little Baby
Hush, little baby, don't say a word
They kissed each other; their lips parting gently even as the hilt of his katana pressed into Naruto's side.
"I'll be back before tomorrow evening," Sasuke promised; his Sharingan slowly transforming into his Mangekyou form. His other eye glowed purple; the Rinnegan awakening once more.
"Gaara's going with you?" Naruto questioned, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Hm, and Kakashi and Shikamaru are there for backup," Sasuke confirmed; his remaining hand cupping Naruto's right hip. "They won't stand a chance against us. Tsunade will join us as well just in case we need healing."
"I wish I could go with you." Naruto's frown deepened; frustration brewing in the pit of his stomach.
They had gone over the plan multiple times but that didn't mean he was happy with it. It annoyed him that he would be stuck here while Sasuke and their friends would be risking their lives.
"I know, but someone has to remain here just in case," Sasuke sighed. "I don't think all the precautions will be necessary, but just in case."
"Yeah, I know," Naruto muttered, scowling.
They both turned their heads when a soft mewl piped up from the corner of the room.
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
Immediately Naruto made his way to the pastel green crib where their two month old baby boy was waking up, curling and unfurling his little fists as he blinked dark blue eyes up at the older man. Soft, wispy black hair covered his scalp, already in complete disarray even though Naruto had taken care to comb it carefully to order just an hour ago.
"Hey there, already awake?" he asked softly, smiling when Hikari pursed his lips and formed a spit bubble. "I thought you would be asleep for a bit longer."
Carefully he lifted him up, quickly checking his bottom, but nope, it wasn't a dirty nappy. He wasn't crying his lungs out either, so he wasn't hungry at the moment.
"Just wanted to say goodbye to dad?" he guessed and after adjusting his baby better in his arms, he turned around again and walked back to Sasuke, whose eyes softened the second they landed on their son.
"Not in the mood to sleep, hm?" Sasuke murmured and stroked Hikari's cheek; the little boy turning his head towards him. One of his small fists reached out, swaying aimlessly through the air and Sasuke let him catch his finger, wrapping his chubby fingers around the digit.
"Guess he knows you're leaving for a bit," Naruto mumbled and bent down to kiss Hikari's forehead, breathing in his comforting baby scent.
"I'll be back soon," the dark haired man promised the both of them.
One more kiss was shared and then Naruto stood there, their baby cuddled against his chest, watching Sasuke disappear through the door, joining the others downstairs.
Leaving him behind in the safehouse he'd been living in ever since he'd given birth.
And if that mockingbird don't sing
He hadn't even known it had been possible for him to carry a child. He was a man, why would he have assumed something so outrageous?
During one of his solo missions – one of the few Kakashi had allowed him to have, because even after the war, there were people out there too eager to get their hands on a bijuu – he'd come across some sealed scrolls in a forgotten shack. It had been built deep in a forest and he'd only found it because he'd been searching for a stream to drink from. The door had been slightly ajar and out of curiosity he'd gone inside to take a look. The scrolls in question had laid discarded in the top drawer of a broken cabinet and he had opened them, intrigued by its content.
There had been five scrolls in total, but he had only handed over four to Kakashi when he had returned, keeping the fifth one as a secret. For two months the scroll had been hidden underneath his clothes in the wardrobe; its content ever present in the back of his mind.
Two months, five days and five hours after having found the scrolls, he had cracked and had confided into Sasuke what he had found that day. It had been so stupid, being so obsessed with that scroll, but it had all he had been able to think about: because it could give him something he'd never had before.
A family of his own.
Together with Sasuke.
Still, even with the scroll they had contemplated for weeks what to do. Could an old jutsu even be trusted when they hadn't heard of it before? When they couldn't find any evidence of people having used it in the past?
Naruto had been ready to discard it, give it to Kakashi after all, but something in him had hold him back, had had him placing the scroll back on the table that day as he had waited for Sasuke to return home.
Three weeks later they had performed the jutsu underneath Tsunade's watchful, critical eyes; the Sannin ready to intervene the second the jutsu showed signs of reacting badly within Naruto's body.
It hadn't. Whoever had designed the jutsu had known what they had been doing after all.
Ten months later they had welcomed a beautiful baby boy in their small family. A boy who arrived safely and healthily, crying out his lungs and having Tsunade tease Naruto that clearly their child had inherited his lung capacity.
Two days later their luck was shattered.
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring
They hadn't seen it coming.
Still recovering from the strain of having given birth, Naruto had been humming to himself on the second evening, still learning how to properly put a nappy on his baby while Sasuke had been heating up some milk.
Right as Sasuke had entered the room, carrying the bottle, the front wall of their house had exploded and Naruto had barely been able to cover Hikaru with his body on time before brick and glass showered him, cutting rivets in his exposed skin and making him see stars when some brick had landed on his head.
Sasuke had instantly covered them with his Susanoo before flying enraged to the front, going after whoever had attacked them. It had been a group of five men, Naruto had seen right before they had disappeared, leaving their house destroyed and Hikaru screaming distressed.
It had been an anomaly, they had tried to convince themselves, just some rogue shinobi thinking they could take on two war heroes. They had encountered those before, missing nin stupid enough to think they could take them head on.
They had moved out into an empty apartment for the time being, trying to decide what to do next. Their house would need to be rebuild and they had to figure out who had been behind the attack, because there was no way they could be left unpunished.
Two nights later, Naruto barely had been on time to prevent Hikaru from being abducted.
And if that diamond ring turns brass
Seeing an unknown man standing so closely to his baby, ready to snatch him up and disappear with him had terrified Naruto into an unbridled rage and he'd gone straight into Kyuubi Mode, slamming the guy against the wall with a Rasengan.
Having been hit by a Rasengan at such close range had left the criminal with a gaping wound in his chest, blood pouring out freely. Even so, he had slumped down with a maniacal grin and he'd stared boldly into red eyes.
"You won't always be there to protect the kid," he'd whispered ominously.
He'd been dead before Naruto could demand further answers.
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass
"They're after Hikaru," Kakashi announced sombrely, rubbing his forehead. "No doubt about that anymore."
"But why?" Naruto asked frustrated, reminding himself in time to keep his voice low enough as to not wake up Hikari.
Their baby had understandably been very upset after that guy had tried to abduct him and he'd been crying for the rest of the night, only having fallen asleep because he'd exhausted himself.
"A baby with the genes of an Uchiha and an Uzumaki, do the math, kid," Tsunade murmured, crossing her arms underneath her impressive bosom. "No doubt whoever this group is, is after Hikari because of who he is."
"They don't even know whether he's going to be powerful," Naruto muttered darkly, caressing Hikari's cheek. It was less to soothe his son and more a way to calm himself down.
"Brat, he's yours and Uchiha's kid," she said exasperatedly. "Of course he's going to be powerful. Just like how you're powerful partly because of who your parents were."
"I guess I understand now why mum gave me her last name," Naruto mumbled, clenching his jaw. After realising who exactly his dad had been, he had understood why he'd been given his mum's last name instead of his dad's, but even at that time he'd thought that they had been too overprotective.
As if shinobi really would risk breaking into a village to try to abduct the Fourth Hokage's son.
Apparently such people really existed and now his own son was a target. All because he carried both the Uchiha and the Uzumaki genes.
"Perhaps they should live in a safehouse for now?" Sakura suggested uncertainly; her face lined with tension. "I doubt this group is going to stop going after them, so a safehouse might be the only way to keep Hikari safe until we've found the group."
"How long would we have to stay there?" Sasuke asked tersely.
His arm was wrapped around Naruto's shoulders and the blond man could feel his fingers tightening almost imperceptibly. He rested his head against Sasuke's shoulder, silently showing his support. He knew why Sasuke disliked the notion of a safehouse. Even now he still didn't feel comfortable in Konoha and having to remain in a safehouse here for gods knew how long …
"For however long is necessary," Kakashi said clipped, but he looked apologetic. "I know this isn't what you want, but we can't risk any of your safety nor that of other civilians in case they keep blowing up your home."
And so it was decided: until the group was found in its entirety, Sasuke, Naruto and Hikari would go into hiding.
And if that looking glass gets broke
"It'll be all right, you'll see," Naruto said soothingly when Hikari started fussing, looking perturbed now that his dad was gone. "Dad will be home soon again, I promise. He'll get rid of the bad guys and then he'll be back. You won't even have time to miss him."
Even as he spoke those soothing words, his stomach churned and twisted uncomfortably. He knew Sasuke and the rest could take care of themselves, but this group had also proven to be more tenacious and dangerous than they had expected.
Taunting notes had been sent to Kakashi and Tsunade; Gaara had been attacked in his own office because the group had apparently thought Naruto had gone into hiding there. Not such a stupid assumption given how close both men were.
A guard on his way to replace another one on his shift had been murdered in cold blood. They had found his body when the guard still at the safehouse had sent out an alert that something wasn't right.
Kiba, Shikamaru and Sakura had been attacked at their homes, only able to still tell the tale because they had sensed an unknown chakra approaching.
A small group shouldn't make Naruto worry so much, shouldn't make him fear for his friends' lives. Not when he had fought against the likes of Orochimaru, Pein, Obito, Madara and Kaguya. They had all been terrifying because of their special powers. This group didn't seem to be in the possession of anything special aside from the knowledge of how to make precise, very destructive bombs.
This group shouldn't scare him so much – but they did, because they seemingly couldn't be stopped. They wouldn't stop hunting them down until Hikari was finally in their hands, until they could finally accomplish whatever fucked up plan they had for his baby.
They were smart, fast and had the element of surprise on their side each and every time. It almost appeared impossible to defeat them, much less catch them.
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat
"Everything's fine," he hummed and started walking around, rocking Hikari gently back and forth, smiling when Hikari smacked his lips together and looked back at him; his hand curled against Naruto's chest. "You can go back to sleep. When you wake up, everything will be okay, I promise."
They might have the element of surprise on their side, Naruto was still one of the most powerful shinobi alive. They might have a wide variety of weapons at their disposal, but he had Sage Mode and Kyuubi Mode and one Tailed Beast Bomb would obliterate them.
They might be strong – but they weren't on Madara's level. Nowhere near it. And if Naruto and Sasuke could defeat a goddess like Kaguya, they could take on whoever was stupid enough to go after their baby.
And if that billy goat won't pull
No matter what, he would protect his son. He would see to it that Hikari wouldn't have to live a day in fear, that he would get to grow up happily and safe.
Let them come. He was ready.
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and a bull
Toshio smirked when he saw four shadows seemingly appearing out of nowhere before they shot up in the trees and rushed away, aiming for the place where they could feel three of his teammates.
Yuuma tilted his head to the left. "They're not going to survive this confrontation. Uchiha, Kakashi, Nara and the Kazekage are after them; none of them will stand a chance," he remarked neutrally.
"Of course they won't," Toshio snorted and unearthed a thin vial from his pocket, opening it carefully. Within a dark purple liquid glistened, emanating a sickly sweet scent.
Dipping a kunai into the poison, he went on, "I'm not stupid. I know they won't be able to go up directly against Uchiha and the rest. They're not strong enough."
"You were never planning on having them make use of the power," Yuuma guessed and smiled faintly. "I suppose I should be happy you didn't choose me to act as a distraction."
"Unlike them, you are useful," Toshio said and dipped a second kunai in the poison. He doubted he would need both, but he wasn't going to take any chances. "You'll be able to make good use of the kid's power; they won't. If they truly believe they can take on Uchiha at the level they are at right now … Well, that's their own fault."
Yuuma grinned; a white flash in the dark. "Ready?"
He pocketed his kunai and turned to his right, where he knew the entrance to the safehouse was hidden underneath the ancient tree trunk. He smiled. "Ready."
"Let's do this."
And if that cart and bull turn over
The end of the war had left people careless; their mouths running too freely. A lot of them appeared to think that the war being over meant there were no more criminals running amok either. As if everything had suddenly become peaceful and good.
People talked. They talked and they gossiped and they whispered, eagerly sharing interesting news.
They discussed the relationship between the Jinchuuriki of Konoha and the last living Uchiha. They spoke of them being lovers, giggled about how handsome a pair they made.
Eagerly shared the news when someone had spotted the Jinchuuriki lying dead exhausted in the hospital with a new born baby resting on his chest and Uchiha staring down at the kid in wonder.
Gossiped about how much the baby looked like the both of them, sharing the Jinchuuriki's eyes and Uchiha's black hair.
The rumour mill worked overtime, because had it really happened? Had they discovered a way to …? It couldn't be, no it couldn't, but why did the baby look so much like them then?
The baby looked so much like them …
Because it was theirs.
Sneaking into the scroll room had been almost laughably easily and it hadn't taken them long either to find the scroll in question. The plan had taken even less time to fully form.
A child of Uzumaki and Uchiha together? They couldn't imagine a more powerful kid to exist. Just thinking of the amount of chakra the kid had to possess, the possibility of a Sharingan developing in the future …
And so it was decided: they would go after the kid and raise it as their own. And once the kid was old enough …
Well, they had some jutsu of their own that would help them become more powerful.
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover
They descended into the gap as soon as they were sure that the group was out of range. It had taken weeks to set up the right circumstances; weeks of taunting Konoha, of attacking and retreating just in time to avoid being caught.
Of enraging Uchiha enough to lure him out, away from his precious lover and child.
No, Sato, Nakamura and Aikawa wouldn't survive this night, but sacrifices had to be made sometimes. They were good shinobi, rather strong, but in the end they would serve better as a distraction. They just were unfortunate that Toshio had been the brains from the start and Yuuma his right hand. If anyone was going to use the child's powers for themselves, it was the two of them, not the others.
His hand trailed across the earth wall as he dropped down, landing in a badly lit corridor. At the end of it there was just one single door, behind which they would find the Jinchuuriki and his child. He shared a look with Yuuma, who dropped down behind him, and the younger man nodded, his eyes fixated on the door.
The corridor wasn't by any means large and they were forced to walk hunched over or risk bashing their head against the ceiling the whole way. Obviously this safehouse had been designed with only safety in mind and not necessarily comfort.
Two warning jutsu had been installed, acting as some sort of alarm signal, but Yuuma made quick work of them, sending his own chakra through them to disable them. They would be finished here before the first team would arrive to search the cause of the alarm, but tonight was not the night to take any chances.
They had one shot at this and they would succeed.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark
They had briefly debated whether they should make the door explode and offer them entrance through that, but they had no idea where exactly the Jinchuuriki and the kid were and they absolutely didn't want to alert him and give him time to hide. They couldn't try to predict where he was exactly either, because the safehouse had been warded so that chakra couldn't be tracked from the outside.
Thus the only solution was to open the door in the most mundane way: by picking the lock.
Yuuma held up his hand and Toshio fell back, allowing Yuuma enough space to work on the door. Quite adept at the skill, it didn't take the brown haired man long to unlock the door and he carefully pushed down the knob, not making any sound whatsoever.
Soundlessly the door swung open and they stepped inside, quiet as shadows. Only one light could be discerned in the place, coming from their left in a small hallway and they turned towards it, keeping out of sight of the open door.
Toshio dared to peek inside, smirking when he spotted the Jinchuuriki. The blond man was humming slightly offkey on the couch, rocking his child back and forth. He made for quite the idyllic picture, that was for sure, with the soft look on his face and the smile playing around his mouth.
Too bad for him, but this was the last moment he would ever share with his kid.
Papa's gonna buy you a horse and a cart
They shot forwards in unison, Toshio holding his kunai, Yuuma brandishing his huge sword, working together like they had done for years now.
"Wha-" The Jinchuuriki whirled around, blue eyes growing wide in shock and fear, before he jumped up but Toshio was faster, throwing the first poisoned kunai with full force into the Jinchuuriki's neck while Yuuma dove forwards, ready to take the child.
The kunai struck and the man disappeared with a 'poof'.
Toshio's eyes widened, anger replacing his excitement and he cursed aloud, "Fuck, that was a clone! Where is he?"
"He can't have gone far!" Yuuma insisted, gripping his sword tightly. "He never left. We've been staking out this place for more than a week!"
"I didn't leave, no."
The guttural tone filled Toshio unwillingly with fear and he slowly turned around, sweat breaking out on his forehead when his gaze landed on Uzumaki.
Uzumaki who stood in front of their only escape route. Uzumaki whose chakra was flaring out, coating him in a bright orange robe, black lines thickening on his cheeks.
Uzumaki whose eyes glowed with hatred and above who grew a giant fox head, which opened its mouth and snarled viciously.
"You want my son? You'll have to go through me first," he hissed and a clone appeared, rapidly moving his hands above Uzumaki's outstretched hand. "Think you can still run away now?"
The air crackled loudly as a bright blue spinning ball formed in his palm, the sides of it lengthening until it looked like a shuriken with a ball in the middle. It made the air whistle sharply, causing Toshio's ears to ring.
"Try to escape from this!"
He and Yuuma sprang apart, diving each to the other side of the room but before he could run away and try to blow a hole through the ceiling to escape, Uzumaki was right in front of him, a grim smile on his face as his hand shot out and grabbed Toshio by his neck, slamming him harshly against the wall, pain exploding in the back of his head.
As fingers tightened around his throat, cutting off his air supply, he caught a glimpse across Uzumaki's shoulder and gurgled in shock when he saw Yuuma slumped across the opposite wall, his stomach cleaved so far in two, it was a miracle he was still whole.
"H-how …"
"You're not the first enemy I've dealt with," Uzumaki said grimly; his eyes ice cold. "You're nowhere near Madara's level either. How do you think you could have handled my son when you can't even handle me?"
A fox's roar filled the room, something sharp slashed apart his neck and then –
Nothing.
And if that horse and cart fall down
"Thanks for looking after Hikari, Granny Sage," Naruto smiled, taking over his son from Shima.
As soon as Sasuke and the others had departed, he'd been on his guard, keeping track of the two chakra signatures he had felt settling near the safehouse earlier this week. He'd sent Hikari to stay with the toads, not wanting his son anywhere near the battle once it would begin. With his son safely hidden, he had been able to focus on the fight without getting distracted, ready to get rid of the threat once and for all while Sasuke had dealt with the others.
The female toad tutted her lips, tickling Hikari's belly and making the little boy giggle. "Nonsense, always happy to help you, my boy." Shima narrowed her eyes then; her gaze lingering on the reddish brown smears across both walls. "Everything under control now?"
Naruto smiled, hugging Hikari to his chest and tilting his head back to accept a kiss from Sasuke, who had just returned for disposing the bodies. "Yes, everything's under control now."
"Why don't we get you settled at your new home, hm?" Sasuke murmured, taking over Hikari and smiling when the little boy gurgled back at him.
The small group might have been strong – but they had been nowhere near Sasuke's and his level. And unfortunately for them, Naruto's powers had been fuelled even further by his desire to protect his baby boy.
Let their enemies come. No matter how many times, they would defeat them again and again.
Because they loved their son and they would do anything to make sure he was safe and happy.
Now it was time to return home and finally catch a good night's sleep.
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town
The End
AN2: I figured that if Sasuke and Naruto were to have a child together, it wouldn't be so farfetched to think that some criminals might try to abduct the child. Sort of what might have happened to Naruto if they hadn't given him Kushina's last name. Also I wanted to combine a lullaby with Naruto sort of being a protective badass? Not sure I succeeded, though ...
