Author's note: So this idea popped up in my head a little while ago and it wouldn't leave me alone. It's a bit of a different direction, I think, from what I usually write for this kind of setting, so I figured I would try to test it out with one part first. Do you think this is interesting enough for the second part to be added? Let me know!
Warnings: Sakura's pov (for now); medievalish setting; fairytalish elements; arranged marriage; slash; not for Sakura fans
I hope you'll like this first part!
Part 1
There was once a beautiful princess who was dearly loved and adored by her parents. Her hair was a pretty pink just like the cherry blossoms which had bloomed during her birth, spurring the royal pair to name her Sakura.
Little Sakura grew up, knowing that one day she would rule the Haruno kingdom together with her future husband, a husband, so her mother reassured her over and over again, who she could choose herself. No arranged marriages for the sweet princess, no, she would only marry out of love, her parents swore.
When she was eight years old, the princess gained an adoptive brother. He was a scrawny blond boy, smaller than her even though they were of the same age. His parents had worked for the royal family, but an awful disease – one which had rampaged through their kingdom and the neighbouring ones ruthlessly – took the both of them away, leaving the boy alone.
The blond boy named Naruto was fortunate, however, because even with the differences in ranks, the king and the queen had been quite fond of his parents, appreciating their hard work and eternal bright smiles and so, feeling sorry for the poor little boy, they decided to adopt him as their own, taking care of him so that he would not be lost in a world which so cruelly had treated him already.
Sakura could not say she was quite overjoyed with the new addition to the family. She did not hate the boy, felt even sorry for him for having lost his parents at such a young age, but did he really have to join her family? Why not join the family of another servant instead?
"Someday you'll understand, my dear," Mother smiled gently, stroking over her pink hair as she laid in bed one week after the boy had joined their family. "It was the right thing to do."
"There are servants who could take care of him," Sakura muttered, not wanting to go against the Queen's words, but not exactly happy with the situation either. Eight years she'd spent as their only child; now she would have to share their attention with a servant's child?
"It's a burden we don't mind taking up," Mother said and her voice was a tad firmer this time, brooking absolutely no argument. She rose up after placing a soft kiss on her daughter's forehead. "Do not worry, my sweet Sakura. You are still the heiress to the throne and you will be queen one day. Naruto's presence will not influence that. I do hope you and him will get along. I've always wished to have siblings myself."
She smiled wistfully then, lost in thoughts for a moment until the flames in the hearth crackled, startling her out of her reverie. "Now it is time for you to get some rest. Good night, my sweetheart. I wish you the most pleasant dreams."
"Yes, good night, mother," Sakura murmured, watching her mother stride gracefully out of the room, followed by one of the servants.
The little princess still thought it was ridiculous to adopt a servant's child as their own, but she was also mollified by her mother's words. It was good to know that even the presence of the boy wouldn't interfere with her plans.
She would be queen one day, whether that meant having to deal with a new sibling or not.
That night, she fell asleep with a smile.
Sakura grew to accept Naruto, though he could quite irritate her with his inane insistence on pulling jokes on everyone. He was also slow on the uptake when it concerned his lessons, especially the ones which taught him how to behave befitting of someone belonging to a royal family. Hearing him mumbling and fooling around instead of taking his classes seriously – especially after the King and Queen had been gracious enough to adopt him and treat him as one of their own! – caused her so much irritation that she requested to attend her lessons separately from him. She had to prepare herself to take up the ruling of the country in the future and she could not do so if Naruto was constantly distracting her!
Just because he would never have an important role in the family did not mean he could endanger her future with his idiotic antics!
And so they both grew up together, separately even whilst joined through the bonds of family. Sakura prepared herself to take over the crown one day and Naruto … Well, it did not matter what he did as long as he did not jeopardise her future.
Everything was well in the kingdom.
Then Sakura turned seventeen and the first suitor was there to ask for her hand.
"Are you certain?" Ino's blue eyes widened and she hid her mouth behind her hand.
"As certain as the sun rises every morning," Sakura replied solemnly but she had a hard time concealing her smile. "The youngest Uchiha prince will arrive within one week to ask for my hand!"
The Uchiha kingdom was famous throughout many regions. Not only did they hold a formidable army both on land and on sea, but they were also one of the richest kingdoms, courtesy of the many riches Mother Nature deemed to give them. Their harvest was bountiful each year; their vegetables and fruit sold throughout several regions. They were masters in several crafts, one of which was the skill of forging unbreakable swords, which had other kingdoms begging to purchase their skills. They never betrayed their secrets, but were willing to exchange goods if the deal was interesting enough.
King Fugaku and Queen Mikoto had two sons: Itachi and Sasuke. It was the youngest one who was looking for a bride and as fate would have it, the Uchiha and the Haruno had closed a pact many years ago, promising to join their kingdoms in a union if both parties agreed. As Itachi was set to take over the throne from the king, Sasuke would have to remain here at the Haruno kingdom if Sakura wanted to become a queen one day.
She was certain she could persuade him to remain here, for who wouldn't want to be wedded to a future queen and become a king in their own right?
This union would work out perfectly for the both of them: she would get to marry a prince of a very influential family, their two kingdoms would be united and become stronger as a result, and he could become a king through her throne ascendance.
Truly, it could not have worked out better and she could hardly wait to meet the prince!
"I had heard he was searching for a bride, but I had no idea he has his eyes set on you," Ino said amazed, though there was a hint of jealousy in her tone as well and Sakura smiled smugly.
"Well, he does. Father informed me of his upcoming arrival and I for one cannot wait to meet him," she said happily, nodding absently in thanks when a maid refilled her cup of tea. "Can you imagine how wonderful it will be if our kingdoms were to join together? I will be an even more powerful queen than my mother is already!"
"That is if he agrees to remain here," her friend cautioned her. "I've heard people say that the Uchiha are a very close-knitted family. I would not be so sure that Prince Sasuke will be willing to give up his entire life there to live here."
Right as she opened her mouth to reply, another voice popped up behind her. "I apologise, my lady, but did I hear you say Prince Sasuke?"
They both turned around in their garden chairs and Sakura was surprised to see Lady Temari standing just a few feet away from them, already dressed for departure. She had joined her brothers for a visit to the castle earlier today. Sakura thought that the oldest Sabaku brother had to discuss something regarding some grounds near the east, but she had not paid much attention to her parents when they had been discussing the upcoming visit.
That was one thing she did not look forward to once she took over the throne: having to deal with dreadful boring discussions about grounds and fields and harvest and such.
"Yes, I did," Ino said bemused and blinked slowly. "The princess is set to meet him within one week to discuss a potential courting."
"I would not add 'potential' to that sentence," Sakura giggled coyly, covering her mouth briefly.
However, Lady Temari's smile was pinched as she folded her hands in front of her. "I normally do not speak ill of people nor pay heed to rumours, but …"
"But what?" Sakura prompted her and furrowed her eyebrows. "Please continue. What is it that you heard?"
She and Lady Temari had conversed several times before, mainly during parties at the castle and while she would not claim to be close to the older woman, she also knew her well enough that for her to carry such a troubled look, something must be dire.
Did it have to do with Prince Sasuke?
"I have heard from people who've had dealings with the Uchiha kingdom that the royal family does not show their faces in public, certainly not the sons."
"Perhaps to remain anonymous?" Sakura suggested, nibbling on her lip. The gods knew that sometimes she wished she could just leave the castle and go up in the crowd without being clamped onto by the villagers.
"No, they say," here Lady Temari paused and sighed then, pursing her lips, "they say that the royal family is as hideous as the creatures plaguing our nightmares and so they won't show their true selves until they have trapped the other party into a marriage. They say that only when the time comes for the bride to kiss the groom do they remove their masks and show their true face. By then it is already too late and they have trapped the poor bride."
"Those sound like nasty rumours created out of jealousy," Ino remarked scornfully and rolled her eyes. "I would not pay heed to such tales, Lady Temari."
"Perhaps not," the older blonde allowed. "But it is a fact that nobody has ever seen them without a hood before – and none of the families ever see the bride again once she's wedded. Most likely they are but simple rumours, stoked by jealousy and envy, but I would be remiss if I did not at least tell you to be cautious, my Princess. Just remember to be careful before you sign your life away to the Uchiha kingdom."
She dipped her head and then left, presumably to join her brothers at the front of the castle.
"You think she's speaking the truth?" Ino asked, frowning.
"I have not known Lady Temari to lie before," Sakura answered begrudgingly and stared at the door through which the older woman had disappeared.
Were the Uchiha men really as hideous as the monsters in their nightmares? If that was true …
Suddenly the prospect of meeting the prince didn't fill her with excitement any longer.
Dread like a heavy stone in the pit of her belly, Sakura halted in front of her father's chamber doors. The guard knocked on the door and once he received an affirmative answer, he opened the door slightly and called out, "Your Highness, your daughter, the princess, is here to see you."
"Let her come in," Father ordered and the guard bowed, stepping aside.
She entered the room immediately, but waited until the door was closed before she strode over to the desk behind which her father was seated, looking over documents.
"Sakura, it is a rare occurrence for you to visit me here this late in the evening," he commented and steepled his fingers together; the flames of the candles making his eyes glisten. "Is there something on your mind, my dear?"
"Of sorts." She cleared her throat gently and clasped her hands together behind her back. "Father, I was wondering – do you know how Prince Sasuke looks like?"
He blinked and leant back, regarding her bemused. "No, I do not. I did request a small portrait to be sent with the next correspondence, but for some reason they were reluctant to acquiesce to that request. They're good allies, though, so I did not take offense to their refusal. Why?"
Her stomach cramped together. So they would not even send a portrait to assuage her worries? Why would they refuse a simple request like that unless they had something terrible to hide?
"Sakura, what's wrong?" Father asked concerned. "You look a bit pale, my dear, are you all right?"
"I was told a terrible thing today, father," she admitted and sighed deeply. "According to a source I trust very much, the Uchiha men refuse to show their faces because theirs bear the resemblance to monsters. Only when they have trapped a poor woman in marriage do they show their true face when it is too late for the bride to retreat."
"I'm sure they're just rumours," he said soothingly. "I very much doubt they are that hideous and I know King Fugaku – his family does not strike me as one who would lure innocent women into marriages built out of lies."
"Then why refuse to send us a portrait when it is custom to do so?" she pointed out triumphantly. "Father, I cannot stand the thought of being married to someone who seeks to deceive me by hiding his face and only revealing it to me once I have no way to leave anymore. What's more, according to my source they would not allow me to see you nor mother anymore! Do not ask of me to be parted with you when my heart belongs to this kingdom first and foremost!" she pleaded.
He frowned severely. "I understand your plight, my dear daughter, I really do, but my hands are tied. We have a pact, remember," he reminded her gently. "A pact that states that our kingdoms will be united through a marriage."
And pacts couldn't be broken, not unless they wanted to risk waging war. With the formidable army that the Uchiha possessed waging war would mean a complete death sentence for the Haruno kingdom.
But she did not want to marry someone who had come straight out of a nightmare! She did not want to lose her parents nor lose her right to the throne! Surely, there was something they could do so that she could avoid this terrible fate!
As her gaze trailed across the room, ignoring her father who tried to reassure her everything would be all right, her eyes landed on the portrait right behind father. It was a smaller one than the one hanging in the throne room, meant for private viewing only. It showed her parents dressed in their most regular clothes, her standing right in front of her mother in a beautiful pink dress and Naruto standing right in front of father, looking somewhat sully even in the painting.
Naruto.
Nowadays she barely spared a thought to the one she had to call her brother, busy as she was preparing herself to take up more royal tasks. She had no idea what Naruto was up to, only saw him sometimes walking to the stables to take out a horse for a ride and during meals they had nothing to say to each other.
Really, Naruto might as well not be a part of the royal family for all that he was involved in it.
Wait …
"Does the pact state that it must be me who marries the prince?" she asked urgently, slapping her hands down onto the desk.
That earnt her a pointed frown, but she ignored it. "Father, does the pact state that it has to be me?" she repeated.
"Well, no as the pact was created before you were even born," he spoke slowly and eyed her. "It states that our two kingdoms will be joined through a marriage between two heirs."
"Then why no present Naruto to him?" she suggested and her heart started to pound in her chest; her hands growing clammy.
"Excuse me?"
"The pact states it has to be an heir – but it does not state that it has to be me," she said hurriedly and the dread in her lessened somewhat. "We can give Naruto's hand in marriage to the Prince instead! That way we uphold the pact and I can still become queen of this country without having to fear being separated from you."
"I don't know, Sakura," Father said slowly and his frown deepened even further. "This was not something we ever discussed with Naruto."
"As part of the royal family he has certain duties to uphold as well," she stated and straightened up. "Just as I have to uphold my duties, so should he. I'm sure he will be honoured to be able to help us through joining our kingdoms. If the tales simply are just rumours, then Naruto stands to gain from it as well, no?"
He heaved a huge sigh and ran a hand over his face. "Very well, I will discuss it with your mother and with Naruto. But Sakura, are you certain of this? Once I present Naruto to Prince Sasuke, there is no turning back," he warned her. "I cannot replace you with him afterwards."
"I'm sure," she nodded firmly. "I have made my decision, father, and I will not be swayed from it."
"So much like your mother you are," he sighed wistfully. "All right, if this is what you wish."
"It is. Thank you, father," she smiled and bowed.
When she returned to her own chambers afterwards, she felt so light she thought she could float any minute now. Let Naruto be trapped; she had more important duties to attend to.
After seeing Prince Sasuke completely cloaked and refusing to lower his hood even once during his short stay at the castle, Sakura knew she had made the right decision.
She had been right to not doubt Lady Temari. Thanks to the noblewoman she would be spared a life of suffering and Naruto finally proved to be useful to the family after all.
Their kingdoms would be joined regardless and she would be the future queen.
All was well.
"I have never seen so many people of royal blood gathered together," Hinata murmured in awe; her fingers fiddling nervously with her necklace.
Sakura smiled proudly, overseeing the huge ball room in which members of royal blood from all regions were gathering together.
Tonight they were all coming together to celebrate her twentieth birthday. The joyful occasion also served as a way to meet potential suitors, for while her brother had got wedded two years ago, she still had yet to find a suitable man for herself.
She hoped tonight would change that.
"Will your brother be showing up as well?" Ino inquired curiously, sipping carefully from her glass.
"We sent him an invitation a month ago, but I'm not sure," Sakura replied and shrugged. "I'm sure he is all right, all the same."
She hadn't seen him in three years after he'd been whisked away to be courted fully in the Uchiha kingdom and she could not say she had missed him terribly.
She was curious, however, to see whether he would show up tonight and if so, whether he would do so in the company of his husband. With Naruto being married, this meant that the prince would finally no longer wear any type of concealment, right? She could hardly wait to find out what ugly fate she had escaped from thanks to Lady Temari's warning and her quick sharp wits.
"Well, I don't think he would miss his sister's ball, right?" Hinata said shyly; her cheeks pinking slightly.
"If he does, it wouldn't be such a bother, truly."
Their attention was abruptly drawn towards the large doors when one of the guards announced, "We welcome Prince Sasuke of the Uchiha Kingdom and his spouse, Uchiha-Uzumaki Naruto."
Interest definitely piqued now, Sakura leant slightly forwards from her spot at the balcony, eager to find out just what kind of monster she had escaped from on time.
Naruto was easily to spot even from this distance with his bright blond hair. He was dressed smartly in dark blue robes and next to him –
Was the most handsome man Sakura had ever seen.
AN2: So yes, trying something in a different pov this time. This will be a two shot if there's enough interest and otherwise, well, guess it might be best off disappearing or so. In the second part, either Naruto's or Sasuke's pov would be added just so you know.
Anyways, any guesses as to the real reason why the Uchiha men keep their faces covered?
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the second part if there's enough interest! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
