Teaching Them a Lesson for the Umpteenth Time
"Absolutely not." The bastard's tone was unbidden even when he didn't look up from the scroll he was reading.
Naruto puffed out his cheeks and waved the scroll in the air, replying annoyed, "Ah come on, Sasuke! I can't not go!"
Sasuke looked up calmly from the parchment. "Yes, you can. Simple: you stay here and we don't go. Nothing complicated about that."
"They want to celebrate the day Gaara became Kazekage, you arse. What kind of friend would I be if I didn't even show up?"
"A friend who's barely three weeks away from his due date," Sasuke shot back and pointedly looked at Naruto's swollen stomach which had grown almost way past the point of being able to be hidden behind the thick Hokage robes.
Naruto slumped into his chair – or as much slumping as his huge stomach would allow him to – and pouted. "I've still got three weeks to go and besides, you heard the old hag: babies are basically never on time anyway."
"Yes, meaning that our son can even come earlier than anticipated which makes it even less of a good idea to travel to Suna now," Sasuke smiled thinly, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Damn, that hadn't been a good argument. "Suna is barely two days away; there's plenty of time to go visit Gaara and celebrate his day with him and then go home before the baby's here."
"No, there's no saying what will happen," Sasuke said resolutely and rose up from his chair, closing the scroll. "This is not up for debate, Naruto. You're not leaving Konoha this close to your due date, end of story. I'm going to put these reports away, I'll be right back."
Naruto watched him leave, the door swinging shut behind him, and he groaned, slumping forwards over the desk. Sasuke was being stupidly overprotective like always; he'd grown worse ever since they had discovered Naruto was pregnant.
Suna was literally just two days away! It wasn't as if they had to go to the other end of the world to visit Gaara, Sasuke was being ridiculous. He wasn't even planning on staying the week there; just visit Gaara on the day itself and then return in the evening. He and Gaara knew each other for so long already; he couldn't miss his special day, that wouldn't be okay!
When Sasuke entered the office again, Naruto sat up, determined to try again. He wasn't going to let Gaara down, all because Sasuke was being an overprotective nut!
"Look, I get that you're worried," he started and Sasuke sighed, resting his hand on his hip. "And I realise it's cutting it really close, but I can't just not show up. This day really means a lot to him, because to him it represents his village's acceptance. I'm not saying that we have to stay long, but at least for the ceremony, please. It would mean a lot to him."
"Kage aren't even required to attend," Sasuke reminded him, not unkindly.
"I know, but this isn't about being required to attend. This is one Jinchuuriki showing respect to another one," Naruto said quietly.
Sasuke remained quiet, but narrowed his eyes slightly and Naruto took that opportunity to explain why exactly he needed to see Gaara on his special day.
"For regular shinobi, becoming Kage might be a dream but for shinobi like me and Gaara, Jinchuuriki, becoming Kage is like a miracle," Naruto said and unconsciously his fingers dipped down to trace the seal on his stomach through his robes. "Especially for Gaara. When I was a kid, I still had you who treated me normally, and then I had Iruka-sensei and Kaka-sensei too. But Gaara didn't have someone for a long time. So for him to be a Kage … That's a really big deal, it's huge. And no, the other Kage aren't required to attend, but I want to be there for Gaara, even if it's just a couple of hours. Because I know how he feels."
Sasuke sighed and looked away, a frown marring his forehead.
Naruto felt a bit guilty for putting that frown on his face, especially when he knew just how worried the dark haired man was about him. He understood why he felt so protective, but he also wanted to be there for Gaara. This was a huge deal for his friend, being the Kage of a village which had once despised him and which now respected him and would fight for him. If there was anyone who understood how Gaara was feeling now, it was Naruto.
"Fine, we'll go," Sasuke gave in, but went on as Naruto started grinning, "But I'm going to warn Tsunade we'll leave just in case we do need her help. And I'm going to use clones as stand-ins during the time we're gone."
"Why clones?" Naruto asked confused. "We never really used them before when we leave the village."
A dark eyebrow rose up in derision. "Because it wouldn't be smart to let people with bad intentions know that two Kage will be meeting each other for an unofficial event."
The blond grimaced. "Does that mean that we'll be going in disguise?"
"We either go in disguise or we don't go at all," Sasuke stated and both his tone and the look in his eyes told Naruto that there wouldn't be any compromising on this.
Either Naruto accepted they would visit Gaara whilst wearing disguise or they wouldn't go at all and Sasuke wouldn't budge on this at all. Naruto knew he was already pushing Sasuke's limits by wanting to visit Gaara so close to his due date, so he knew which battles to fight and which ones to give up.
"Okay, fine, disguise and clones," Naruto hastily agreed before Sasuke could change his mind. "But you know, I can just produce a clone of my - "
"I'm going to use clones, Naruto, no discussion about this."
"Yes, okay, no discussion at all, promise!"
He could not discuss clones at all as long as Sasuke and he could go visit Gaara!
At his knock, Tsunade looked up from whatever she had been reading and she cocked an eyebrow.
"To what do I owe the pleasure?" she drawled, turning swiftly around in her chair. "The brat ready to pop?"
"No, not yet," Sasuke said and stepped further into the room, lowering his voice when he spoke next, "Naruto wants to visit the Kazekage to celebrate him being a Kage."
"Yeah, I figured he would want to do that," she said and nodded knowingly. "Wouldn't have expected anything else from him to be honest."
"With him being so close to his due date, I want to take some precautions, though."
"That I figured as well," she smiled wryly. "What are you thinking about?"
"I know Suna isn't that far, but if he does go into labour and we aren't close to Konoha yet, I want to use a clone to get you. Would you be okay with that?" He didn't think she would refuse, not when this concerned Naruto, but it was always better to warn her ahead of what he was planning. He'd rather not get punched if he showed up unexpectedly in her home.
She blinked, leaning back in her chair. "Of course, I wouldn't leave you two alone during that moment. I'm not an idiot," she scoffed, crossing her arms underneath her chest. "Neither of you have any experience with delivering a baby, so yes, the second he goes in labour, you come get me, no matter the hour."
He didn't think there was a point in mentioning to her that he had done some reading on helping to deliver a baby, because with Naruto, you never knew what could happen. But mentioning that would derail the conversation, so he kept quiet about that.
"I'll be using clones to fill in for our absence," he added. "We'll be going in disguise. The less people who know about this trip, the better."
She inclined her head. "That's true, especially with his track record." She frowned, aware of the several close calls Sasuke and Naruto had experienced throughout his pregnancy.
"Did you make any progress with seeking out the traitor?" she asked, her brown eyes darkening a notch.
She, Hinata and Nara were the only ones aware of the fact that they had a traitor in their midst. The three of them were the only people he was certain of who would never betray Naruto. Tsunade was like a grandmother to Naruto and there wasn't a cell in her body that would consider betraying him. Hinata was still in love with Naruto and likewise wouldn't betray him either. Nara was loyal to Naruto, the most loyal out of all his friends, save for Sasuke, and there was no reason for him to betray the Jinchuuriki either.
But with only three people Sasuke was certain would never betray Naruto, that still left an incredibly large pool of suspects left. He and Nara had whittled down the list to half its size, but even that size was still considerably large. It would take them a while still before they would be able to narrow down the final suspect and it was time that Sasuke was reluctant to lose.
Because the more time that was lost trying to search for the traitor, the higher the opportunity that they would try something again.
Which was why Sasuke was taking all sort of precautions this time. His clones would impersonate both him and Naruto, ensuring that nobody would even be aware of the fact that the real Hokage had left the village. They would go in disguise, further ensuring that nobody would recognise them on their way to and back from Suna. He had also made sure to seek out Tsunade at a time he knew nobody would be on this level of the hospital.
This close to Naruto giving birth, he wasn't about to take any chances. He and Nara still hadn't figured out how exactly the traitor knew all their plans and moves, so this time only an absolute minimum amount of people would be aware of their plans to visit the Kazekage.
And that minimum amount was exactly two people: Tsunade and Nara. They were the only ones who would be aware that the Hokage and his Shadow in the office were nothing but mere clones.
"No, not yet," he replied darkly, his fingers briefly tightening across the handle of his katana. "But we're working on it. They won't get away with this, no matter who they are."
"Good," she said brusquely. "They don't deserve any mercy."
Sasuke smiled darkly and turned around, ready to leave again. "Oh, don't worry, they won't get it."
He had just closed the door when footsteps approached him from behind, making him turn around.
It was Sakura, who was clutching a pile of patient files against her chest, and who looked utterly exhausted; several pink strands already escaping from her usual meticulous ponytail. When she saw him, she smiled however, lightening up.
"Hey, Sasuke-kun, wasn't expecting to see you here," she said curiously, coming to a stop. Her green eyes briefly flickered to Tsunade's office and she tilted her head to the left. "You visited Tsunade-shishou?"
"Hm, she wanted to take another look at my arm," he lied with a straight face and raised his stump. "She was thinking of having another go at creating a fake arm with Hashirama's DNA, but I told her not to bother with it."
She pursed her lips. "It might be easier to have two arms again when you land in a fight," she said cautiously. "I know you're strong enough to handle yourself, but if you can have your arm back - "
She quietened when he raised his hand. "No, I've decided from the start that I don't need a new one," he said firmly. "I still stand by that decision, I can deal with the enemy perfectly with just one arm. In fact, beating them with just one arm makes it all the more amusing to me," he smiled darkly.
That had her laugh even when it sounded a bit nervous. "You're really spending too much time with Naruto. I expect him to say something like that."
"Perhaps, but he's not always an idiot," he smirked and nodded at her patient files. "I'll leave you to your work. Good luck with handling the rest of the patients."
She smiled, blushing faintly as she tucked a lock behind her ear. "Yes, thanks. You good luck with whatever you're going to do the rest of the day."
He nodded at her before walking past her, returning to the Hokage Tower. He still needed to make one more stop at Nara's office to inform him of their upcoming plans and then he would have to push Naruto to sign the remaining documents before they could finally go home.
Really, for someone who only had to sign the minimum of documents – Sasuke handling the majority of them – Naruto could sure whine a lot when doing that.
The celebration went off without a hitch.
He and Naruto arrived in the morning, both of them disguised with wigs. Using a Transformation jutsu might set off alarm bells, but nobody was expecting a shinobi – a high ranking one at Kage level at that – to wear a simple wig and some make-up as disguise. On top of the wig and the make-up, Naruto was also wearing a thick, stiff robe which did a fairly good job of hiding his belly. If anybody even thought of paying attention to him, they would most likely think he'd got the belly from drinking and or eating too much.
They went straight to the Kazekage's office before the celebration officially started, so that Naruto could have a moment alone with his friend. Gaara had been quite surprised when they had entered his office. Being one of the very few people who knew about the baby, he definitely hadn't expected them to show up so close to Naruto's due date, which had Sasuke looking pointedly at Naruto.
Naruto being Naruto, naturally, he just ignored Sasuke's look and instead eagerly went in for a hug, enthusiastically congratulating Gaara on his Kage-ship.
They remained in Suna until the late afternoon, celebrating with the villagers and partaking in the feast the cooks had created to celebrate their Kazekage. They said their goodbyes right as the music started and people began dancing on a makeshift dancefloor.
Even with the reservations he had had about today, Sasuke actually felt at ease as they left Suna behind them and started the journey back to Konoha. They would have to spend the night in a tent, because heavily pregnant as Naruto was, he couldn't handle walking – or running for that matter – for the entire night. Sasuke would have liked to use a portal to bring them straight home, but as Naruto had progressed further into his pregnancy, he had developed a reaction against travelling through portals. The last time they had used a portal, it had left Naruto vomiting for hours, and that was something neither he nor Sasuke were eager to repeat.
So walking home and spending the night in the forest it was.
With all the precautions they had taken and with how well the day had gone, Sasuke didn't foresee any trouble happening during the night and was looking forward to having a quiet one for once.
Of course he really should have known better.
Because bad luck appeared to follow them seemingly whenever they set foot outside the village, Sasuke was instantly aware of quiet footsteps approaching them from the north. There were two people nearing the tent; years of honing his senses made it easy to detect how many enemies were out there, even when they were still quite far away.
With it being past midnight and the tent being in a rather isolated place in the woods, Sasuke very much doubted these two people were innocent and he silently sat up, glancing at Naruto. Fortunately, the pregnant man was still fast asleep; his chest rising and falling with every deep breath he took. His bandaged arm was curled around his belly even in his sleep and Sasuke took a moment to stroke his stomach, the skin taut and firm to the touch, before he soundlessly crept out of the tent, grabbing his katana on the way out.
He knew Kyuubi would be more than willing to help his carrier if trouble arose, but the quicker Sasuke got rid of this threat, the better. Fury coursing through his veins, he stalked towards the unknown duo, ready to annihilate them. He was absolutely done with people trying to hurt Naruto, done with fending off attack after attack, because they were all so stupid as to think they could get away with hurting the Hokage.
He was done with them trying to harm what was his.
"Not exactly a time to be out for a walk, don't you think?" he drawled and they jumped, whirling around in shock.
They were two men, their slashed through headbands showing they were from Kumogakure. The one on the left held a giant sword in his hands, not unlike the one Suigetsu carried around, while the one on the right was almost strapped from head to toe with both shuriken and kunai, with the two kunai in his hands dripping with some kind of green substance. Poison, Sasuke presumed.
"We weren't – he said you wouldn't be on your guard!" the left man spluttered, backing away, panic visibly growing in his eyes now that he realised he would have to fight with Sasuke and not Naruto.
He, huh? How interesting.
"Well, he should have known better," Sasuke sneered and raised his katana. "I'm getting really tired of this bullshit. One peaceful night, was that really too much to ask for?"
"Look man, we'll go away right now, we swear, we won't harm the Hokage at all!" the guy on the right stammered in a high pitched voice, raising his hands and dropping his kunai in the process.
Sasuke smiled thinly, revealing his Mangekyou Sharingan and his Rinnegan. "Unfortunately for you two, my patience is now officially gone. You chose the wrong target tonight."
He didn't wait for either of them to say anything else, because what else could they possibly say that would justify them trying to hurt Naruto?
Nothing. Nothing justified that.
One step and he was right in front of the man on the right, who opened his mouth – to plea, to scream, to try to wheedle his way out of this, who knew? – but who didn't get a chance to say anything before the sharp blade of Sasuke's katana neatly sliced through his throat, nearly decapitating him. Blood sprayed out in a wide arch, coating everything in its vicinity, including Sasuke, who clucked his tongue and glared at his blood covered shirt. He would have to change into something else before going back to the tent.
The remaining enemy yelled in shock and actually dropped his sword in his haste to back away, falling onto his back when he tripped over a raised root of a tree.
"Hey, hey, no need to do this!" he cried out nervously. "I'll be on my way, I'll be gone so quickly you won't even notice I was here in the first place!"
"No can do, because unfortunately for you, I do notice you're here," Sasuke said coldly and raised his katana once more; the blade crackling with his Chidori this time.
Dark brown eyes widened in terror. "I – I – I can give you everything I have! I've got money, a whole bag, I can give you that! I – I can give you my sword, you can have my sword!"
Sasuke cocked his head to the left, considering the guy. "Tell me who sent you after the Hokage," he ordered. Not that it would save him, but at least his and Nara's search would finally be over then.
Unless there were two separate traitors, but he wasn't going to entertain that idea just yet.
"I – I don't know, man," the guy said desperately. "You've got to believe me, I don't know who the guy was!"
"So you just take orders from unknown people? With your lack of intellect, is it any surprise you ended up in this situation?" Sasuke sneered.
"He offered us a lot of money, okay?" the man cried out in a panic. "Like three bags of it and all we had to do was sedate the Hokage for a while and keep him hidden and that was going to be it, I swear! We weren't going to harm him, just sedate him!"
"Funny, I still count sedating and abducting him as harming him," Sasuke said icily. "You don't know this man at all? How did he look like?"
"No, I don't know him! Never saw him before until he talked to us outside a pub. And I don't know how he looked like, he wore a damn cloak the entire time!"
"So you take orders from a man you don't know and who didn't even show his face to you. Did you even graduate from the academy or did they eventually kick you out for being such an utter failure?" Sasuke questioned rhetorically.
"Look, just – just let me leave, please, you won't ever see me again, I swear!" the man babbled, scrambling backwards across the forest floor.
"Yeah, that's not how I do things," Sasuke said remorselessly and slammed his foot down on the guy's right kneecap, snapping his leg in two immediately.
His scream rebounded through the air, making several birds nearby take flight and had other animals scurrying away into the bushes.
"I'm just beyond sick of dealing with people like you, I'm sure you'll understand," Sasuke smiled humourlessly and right as his katana pierced through the guy's heart, not wanting to waste any more time than necessary, Naruto showed up, his hair in disarray and his eyes bright and wide awake.
"What the hell are you doing here, usuratonkachi?" Sasuke scolded him, pulling his katana back with a soft squelch noise. "Why didn't you stay in the tent?"
"Were they going to attack me?" Naruto asked dubiously, his gaze flitting from one dead body to the next.
"Yes, they were. I got rid of them. Don't avoid the question, why didn't you stay in the tent?" Sasuke asked irritated. He was still on edge after this encounter, even when it had never taken a dangerous turn.
The fact that these two still had found them, even after all the precautions Sasuke had taken … Something was very wrong. Whoever this man was, who was sending all these enemies after Naruto, he somehow had access to information he shouldn't have been privy to at all.
How had he managed to figure out that Sasuke and Naruto would be here tonight and not in the village?
"Yeah, erm, I was about to, I swear, but I – well, we kind of have a problem, maybe?" Naruto winced, looking oddly guilty.
"What kind of problem?" Sasuke asked resigned, turning to face him fully.
"Well, erm, my water might have broken just now? Meaning that the baby is coming tonight?" Naruto bit down on his lip and when he shifted next, bringing himself in a ray of moonlight, the wet spot on his pyjama trousers was quite visible.
Sasuke closed his eyes for a moment and pinched the bridge of his nose. Of course Naruto was going to give birth tonight, in the middle of a forest. Of course he was. What else had he expected, really?
"Next time you're pregnant, I'm going to keep you locked up at our home," Sasuke said tersely, not even flinching when Naruto's hold on his hand turned into a death grip. "I don't care whether that's considered illegal, you're not setting a foot outside the house again."
"Now you're being a bastard," Naruto groaned, whining in pain as another contraction happened, before he pressed his chin into his chest and started pushing again.
"How am I being a bastard when I'm just looking out for you? I'm not the one who decided to leave the village so close to your due date," Sasuke scolded him, even as he kissed a damp temple. "You're doing so well, it won't be that long anymore."
"Listening to you two is going to give me a damn whiplash," Tsunade grumbled from her spot between Naruto's spread legs.
One of Sasuke's clones had brought her to their tent immediately, making use of a portal, and had patiently sat with them waiting until Naruto was ready to start pushing. They had worried for a moment that they might have to do a C-section after all, but luckily even with the strain of giving birth, Naruto was capable of retaining the Sexy-no-Jutsu form. It was a ridiculous jutsu, no matter what Naruto claimed, but it was proving to be of good use tonight now that their son was ready to be born.
"God, this fucking hurts!" Naruto swore and one of his legs kicked out, Tsunade deftly avoiding it. "How much longer do I need to push?"
"Not that long anymore," she reassured him. "The head is nearly out, I just need you to give a couple of big pushes and then you'll be done!"
"Hear that? He's almost here," Sasuke murmured in Naruto's ear. "Just a bit longer, you're doing so well."
A single tear ran down Naruto's cheek, but he nodded; determination flaring up once more as he started pushing with the next contraction.
And even with fury still simmering in the pit of his stomach, ready to be unleashed the second he found the bastard responsible for all those attacks, Sasuke couldn't help but be in awe when Naruto gave a big shout before suddenly falling back against a pillow, followed by Tsunade holding out a squirming, fluid covered baby in the air.
Their baby.
Their son.
"All ten toes and fingers accounted for and he clearly has his papa's lungs," Tsunade announced cheerfully as she cut the umbilical cord and set about cleaning the squirming baby. "You always manage to do the impossible, brat. I don't know how you do it."
"Because I'm amazing obviously," Naruto croaked out and held out his arms. "Now come on, give me my son, I want to look at him!"
"So demanding," she clucked her tongue, but nonetheless obliged, carefully placing their baby in Naruto's arms.
Sasuke felt his own eyes sting when he got his first look at their baby, at his matted black hair and his pouty lips and chubby cheeks. When he opened his eyes, he revealed a set of deep blue ones, which stared unreadably back at them.
A new generation of Uchiha was born tonight.
That realisation had his breath hitching and he was kissing Naruto before he even fully realised it, embracing him tightly.
"You're fucking amazing," he swore quietly, kissing him again even through his laughter.
"Thanks for finally acknowledging that," Naruto teased, but his eyes were suspiciously wet and he blinked them rapidly, clearing his throat when he looked down at their son. "He looks so freaking cute, it's unreal."
"Yeah," Sasuke quietly agreed. It definitely was unreal to finally get to hold their baby in their arms. Unreal after so many months of feeling him grown underneath his palm, of feeling him tumbling and kicking around.
Now he was finally here, peacefully resting in Naruto's arms. Sasuke was going to make damn sure that peace remained.
It was time to get rid of the traitor once and for all.
The End
AN2: Unless my brain betrays me once again, there is one more part for this series :) In this part you'll finally find out who the traitor is once and for all (because Sasuke definitely won't give up this time).
I hope this wasn't too awful to read! Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
