A/N: Welcome to my first shot at a pure AU story, wherein we find ourselves encountered with a grave threat. In total, this story will be updated as we make our way through October, with the first chapter being the prologue. The story was commissioned, but other than that, I do hope you'll have fun with my Halloween story this year.

Hallow’s End was near, of that, there was no doubt. Spread throughout the world like an everlasting plague, creatures of the realm beyond had settled in, primeval nightmares that preyed upon the lesser races known only as mortals. In a land torn asunder by mighty men and eternal wars, the citizens had thrived for a great many years; rebuilding their cities under the generous guidance of the last remaining capital. Yet, when the nightmares began, what little hope the people had left was devoured.
Wandering through one of the densest forests within Seterion’s borders, dancing in and out of the treeline as an ocean of fog threatened to devour him whole, a lone huntsman of nightmares made his way towards yet another town on his endless journey. High in the sky, resting at the zenith of its axis, the heavenly moonlight above failed to break through encompassing fog that had overtaken the land.
The nightmares still remained, as they had for a great many years. A decade prior, the first nightmare had arisen, a being of otherworldly prestige that left lesser men frozen in fear, while the few that held their ground were felled a moment later. To that very day, the nightmares remained, their numbers growing by the minute, their presence increasing for every town claimed, and their infernal laughter ringing through the world, chilling its people to the core.
Dotting the land of Seterion, a great many towns sustained the survivors of a fallen capital. Carpenters and farmers had gathered, their numbers growing by every passing month, until at last, the calamities known as the greatest nightmares came upon them.
Coming to a halt on his everlasting trek through the broken world he inhabited, Sasuke Uchiha’s head snapped up, onyx eyes and trained ears zeroing in on a sound that had become much too frequent as of late; the sound of a woman’s scream and a feral snarl.
Letting out a low sigh, the huntsman sped up, powerful legs kicking off from the ground to carry him through the air. Slacks of a darker color clung to his legs in the wind as he raced forward, the black cloak that normally hid his form fluttered about, wildly knocking the fog aside on his eternal trek; yet his eyes, deep and endlessly dark, were always moving, always searching for the possibility of an ambush. The nightmares were unpredictable at best, and murderous at worst.
How long had it been like that? How many years had come and gone since he, a simple farmhand at the time, had been forced to take up the sword to defend himself from the beasts? With a shake of his head, his musings were set aside in favor of the task at hand.
He ran, dropping both hands down to support and grasp the hilt of his sword. The screams had died down, but the feral growl remained all the same. Whoever it was had yet to die, though whatever had pounced upon them would soon enough have its meal.
Jumping off of a small mound within the fog, his figure burst forth into an open clearing, twisting his body towards the thing that stood before him, half-crouched above something frilly and red.
A lesser nightmare, a werewolf in the mortal tongue.
Its frame was bulky, its legs were bent, but even as he burst through the fog, its head was fastened upon what lay beneath its legs. Snapping his wrists upward, Sasuke drew his blade, a gleaming longsword forged from what little silver he had scavenged from the mines by his home, but as quickly as it had been drawn, its gleaming blade swung through the air, forming an arc aimed straight for the werewolf’s neck.
What he had never thought however, was that as soon as he was certain it had hit, the werewolf crouched, dodging the swipe altogether, a clawed hand pressing down upon the prey that lay upon the ground. The moment it did, a heavy wheeze resounded through the air; a woman’s last breath being drawn in as her chest was pressed down into the ground.
Gritting his teeth as the werewolf’s gaze fell upon him, Sasuke spun, the force behind his first swing bringing him around until, against his better judgment, he swung his sword in another arc through the air; this time aimed for the werewolf’s chest rather than its slender neck.
The howl that reverberated through the air a moment later was as satisfying as it was sickening. A low crunch from whatever bones resided within the nightmare’s body being crushed, a whimper joining the howl from before, and a claw swiping out, aimed directly towards his head despite the heavy fog surrounding them both.
Only then did his eyes readjust, and as the werewolf’s claws rushed towards his face, a knife was all but thrust into its calf, causing another howl to resound from its unholy lungs. The person on the ground, a woman dressed in red, had disregarded her own life, twisting the knife around within the werewolf’s calf until it staggered down, falling onto its back with a heavy thud.
Without so much as a moment’s hesitation, Sasuke leapt forth, sword spinning around in his hands until the very tip was aimed down; dropping down into the werewolf’s heart a moment thereafter.
As quickly as it had begun, his hundredth monster hunt had ended, though for the first time so far, the one being assailed by the beast had survived.
“This is no time or place to take a walk,” he bit out between heavy breaths of air, twisting his sword around within the werewolf’s chest to finish the fight. “Are you alright…?”
Turning his head to the side, the sight that met his eyes was enough to make even the proudest Uchiha blush.
Knocked onto her back as she was, the woman dressed in red had her legs spread wide, feet planted firmly in the ground as she made every attempt to get up. Although, even then, her frilly red skirt was hiked up past her waist, her nakedness beneath revealed for the huntsman’s inquisitive eyes.
He had only looked for the briefest second; only for a moment, yet the sight would forever remain within his mind’s eye. Creamy thighs, lightly tanned skin, and a hairless mound that spoke volumes of the woman’s routines.
However, whether she cared or not was well hidden by her beaming smile and bright, cheerful eyes. “Thank you so much for coming! I thought I was done for when it spread my legs like that!”
Pausing for only a moment, the huntsman dared to take a look her way once more, reassurance filling his being as she rose up onto her feet. ‘Had it been trying to-’
“I… I don’t have any money on me, sir, but could I please repay you for your kindness?” The woman asked, arms behind her back and gaze fixated on a particular spot of dirt on the ground; if she could even see that far.
Innocent though her words were, his gaze lingered, drifting up from her red heels, knee-high white socks, up along a seemingly endless expanse of creamy tanned skin, before forcing his eyes to move away from the skirt he had already peeped beneath. Besides money, there was scarcely a thing he could care to receive.
“Just hurry along. I’ll lead you to the nearest town-” feeling his eyes grow wide, his words died on his tongue as the woman all but leapt towards him, arms winding around his neck even as her soft, pink lips pressed themselves against his own.
It was chaste, hastily done, yet addicting nonetheless. Before his brain had so much as comprehended it, she had pulled away, a faint smile and a furious blush spreading across her cheeks as she tried to look anywhere but there.
“I-I have a request, sir huntsman…” trailing off where she stood, Sasuke couldn’t help but snort; a failed attempt at keeping his smirk at bay.
“Not here. There’s a town not too far away, you can fill me in on the way over.” Turning around where he stood, Sasuke couldn’t help but furrow his brows, lips tingling from where hers had been pressed a moment before. He hadn’t lied about there being a nearby town, but more so than anything else, he wanted a room and a night of privacy; away from the girl that dutifully followed him there…
“Are you familiar with the tale of the great nightmare, sir?” Her voice was meek in comparison to his, but she followed him nonetheless.
Snorting once more, Sasuke’s gaze shifted back and forth, warily gazing around the forest they walked through. The fog had grown thicker…
“Who doesn’t? Long ago, a terrible fiend arose from the grave of a saint and devoured the old capital in hours. It’s just a story to make children behave.”
The rustling of cloth behind his head made him think that she had shook her head, but even then, his eyes roamed. “That may be so, sir, but the greatest nightmares do exist. One of them was sighted nearby, so I-”
Stopping in his tracks, Sasuke spun around, eyes hardened as he stared her down from up high. He hadn’t noticed how short she was. “And do what? Hunt it down on your own? You were overwhelmed by a lesser nightmare!” Shaking his head, he calmed himself down, the faintest twinge of annoyance disappearing from his voice. “You should hire the hunter’s association for this sort of thing. Had I been any later, you would have been…”
Somewhere within the heavy fog around them, a low snap resounded; a twig breaking beneath the weight of something heavy. Whether it was instinct or not, he couldn’t know, but his sword was out of its sheath in seconds, one arm draped around her shoulders whilst his other held the sword out before them.
“Please sir,” she whimpered from within his embrace. “Please help me hunt the Arch-Nightmares. They have to fall. It’s the only way to save us all…”
Holding his position like that for what felt like a small eternity, hidden away within the fog left behind in the wake of the nightmares themselves, he reached his decision. With his left arm still draped around her shoulders, Sasuke Uchiha turned towards her, onyx eyes locking onto her brown eyes.
“Fine, but you owe me.”
The nod he received in reply was followed by a happy little squeal, and one that he himself had to silence with the hand that had previously held her in place. “There are still nightmares about. Can you fight at all?”
The moment those very words left his mouth would be a moment that bound his fate to hers for a long while, though the events he had set in motion were far beyond the scope of his previous hunts.
