(a challenge from someone named zweig over on FFN)
Naruto Uzumaki was a very empathetic kid. He felt for people a lot better and a lot stronger than most folks. Even from a young age, he could sympathize with certain kinds of people very easily.
Orphans, especially. He knew very well what it was like to have no parents, to be treated differently than everyone else for something you had no power over.
This empathy would throughout Naruto's life be one of his greatest tools and most terrible weapons. It was also, ultimately, what led him to take the first steps on the path to his true destiny.
He was every bit the child of prophecy.
Naruto was young, only around seven or eight years old, when it started, when the first domino in the fate of a mighty warlord and unifier was tipped over, beginning a chain of events that would lead him to ultimate victory. That domino was named Sasuke Uchiha.
The day Naruto saw that boy sitting by the lake, looking down so sadly into the surface of his waters, he could not help but feel sympathetic. The boy was an Uchiha from his class – Sasuke, he believed his name was.
Naruto recognized him immediately.
He liked Sasuke, sort of. Maybe admired the boy a little bit. He had been nicer to Naruto than the others, or at least not as actively mean-spirited. Actually, he'd seemed like a pretty sweet person, kindhearted and earnest. And he was usually smiling, too.
He had a very nice smile, Naruto thought.
You wouldn't be able to tell that from looking at him now, though. His face was downcast, so grim and morose.
He looked completely lost, hopelessly melancholic.
Dimly, Naruto recalled something he had heard about a bunch of Uchiha dying. Had it been all of them? He wondered. He certainly hadn't seen any of those ninja police officers in the village, recently...
Naruto vaguely knew that the military police force was run by the Uchiha. If there were no police on the streets...
...well, maybe that would explain why Sasuke looked so sad. Naruto certainly felt for him.
He knew all too well what it felt like to be lonely, and he had never had anyone. He couldn't even imagine what it must feel like for someone like Sasuke, who'd had such a big family before, to suddenly lose all of them. He felt for the other boy.
He frowned, though, sadly.
He didn't like seeing Sasuke look so depressed. It seemed wrong, somehow. The boy had acted so pleasant and nice and earnest before. He was one of the nicest kids his age that Naruto had ever met.
Had he lost his parents in that thing, too? In that massacre? Was that why he looked so sad?
Maybe that was it. Maybe Sasuke was an orphan now.
An orphan like Naruto himself.
That thought dismayed the blond. Life as an orphan was lonely. Naruto knew that, and he was used to it. He could make it on his own, well enough, though he still longed for friendship... and more.
But Sasuke...
There was no way that boy could know how to take care of himself. Not if he'd grown up his whole life with parents. Naruto had seen firsthand how coddled and soft non-orphans could be.
He felt himself grow determined, then. Naruto made up his mind at that point. He would not let Sasuke suffer the same loneliness as he himself had.
Resolution strong, he went over to the boy.
"Hey..." he said, getting the morose Sasuke's attention. "...are you alright?"
Sasuke looked up at him, glum.
"...yeah," he said. The word sounded hollow coming from the boy's lips, and his eyes told a whole other story.
Naruto felt himself grow a little more determined.
"I think you're lying," he said.
Sasuke winced. "You can't prove...!" he started to say, before he shook his head.
He looked tired.
"...I'm not lying," he said weakly. "I'm okay."
Naruto scoffed.
"No, I don't think you are," he said. "You sure don't look okay." His expression softened a little. "...you look like you need a friend..." he said, feeling a little vulnerable putting himself out there like that.
But he was determined to help Sasuke.
"So?" was all the boy said in response. He sounded bitter, defensive.
Naruto smiled sadly.
"So..." he said slowly. "...I need a friend, too..."
Sasuke was silent for a long moment. He looked at Naruto, eyes uncertain. He really examined the boy for the first time he could remember.
He saw the dirt encrusted on the blond's cheeks, the way his clothes hung a little too loosely from a slightly malnourished frame. He saw the hurt and the fear in those bright blue eyes, the loneliness and the need... the need for someone to lean on, someone to support and be supported by in return...
Those eyes were starved for love.
"You... really do..." he said slowly, after that long, pensive silence, "...don't you...?"
"Yeah," said Naruto, his voice coming out a little squeaky. Sasuke could see the slightest glimmer of tears in those eyes. "We both do."
Sasuke smiled softly.
"Okay," he said, tears trickling down his own cheeks. "Friends?"
Naruto smiled. This time it looked like it was for real.
"Yeah," he agreed. "Friends."
They clasped one another's hands. Then they shook.
The Uchiha compound was ideally spacious. Sasuke said it reminded him of bad memories, but Naruto had insisted that just because people had died there didn't mean life couldn't return. If anything, he said, it was all the more reason for them to TRY and bring a sense of growth and laughter back to the desolated, depopulated district.
"You're lucky, Sasuke," said Naruto. "You have somewhere to call home. A place where you have a history, a family. I know you have bad memories from that massacre... but if you were happy back then, then shouldn't the good memories outnumber the bad ones?"
Sasuke was silent for a moment, as they stood beneath the gate of the Uchiha district. He glanced sidelong at Naruto, morosely pensive.
"...I... do have good memories, here..." he admitted at length, after a long period of deep thought. "A lot of them." He shook his head. "But... it's still hard. It hurts to think about them. No matter what I do, my thoughts keep going back to that night... back to how they were all killed by my..."
"Don't," interjected Naruto firmly, his eyes hard. "What have I told you, Sasuke? SMILE!" He curled his lips up into a beaming grin. "See? Even if you don't feel happy, you should still grit your teeth and smile. That's how you get strong!"
Sasuke stared.
"By... smiling?" he said, skepticism evident in his tone.
"Frowning is easy," said Naruto. "Sitting around and moping about the past is easy. But you can't change anything that way. You don't strong doing easy things. If it's hard to smile, then that's when you should smile the MOST!"
"Heh..." Sasuke chuckled weakly at Naruto's boisterous behavior, and roundabout logic. In spite of himself, the corners of his lips curled upwards. "That actually almost makes sense..." he remarked.
"Of course it does!" declared Naruto, beaming radiantly at the orphaned Uchiha.
Sasuke couldn't help noticing how handsome such an obnoxiously cheerful expression could be on that blond's face. The way that golden sunny hair fell, framing his face, and the way his sky blue eyes crinkled and glistened with mirth...
In spite of himself, Sasuke blushed a little.
Abashed, he averted his gaze. Dark blue tresses, nearly pure raven, fell over his eyes as he looked down at his toes.
"...you're right," he said slowly, softly. He was still blushing. "I have to remember the good times. This is a place where people lived and laughed and... and loved..."
His blush deepened infinitesimally at this point.
"I... I shouldn't act so sadly, here..." he continued, his voice a little hoarse but his tone unmistakeably warm. "I should honor the happy memories of the people who lived here..."
"We should celebrate their lives," said Naruto with a nod, placing a hand comfortingly on Sasuke's shoulder. "Not mourn their deaths. Or that's what the old man would say, at any rate!"
He laughed, hearty and gay.
But Sasuke could tell that it was forced, a little. His cheeks still felt a little warm, but still he looked Naruto in the eye and smiled at him, however softly, however slightly.
"I should remember the happy times that I've had with my family... because not everybody is so lucky," he said quietly, looking the blond straight in the eyes.
Naruto flinched, his tanned and whisker-marked cheeks pinkening the tiniest bit. He averted his gaze, however minutely, but Sasuke still saw the hint of pain in those eyes, a tinge of sadness which made their beauty all the richer and more mature.
"Y...yeah..." said Naruto softly, not quite able to meet Sasuke's gaze head on at the moment. "Th...that's right..."
A moment of awkward silence passed between them, a pregnant pause in the conversation which made both feel distinctly uncomfortable, if just faintly so.
"Naruto..." whispered Sasuke at length, breaking the hesitant quietude between them. "...how about you move in with me?" he proposed, smiling a touch sadly at the blond and newfound friend. "I think you could use some happy memories of your own..."
Naruto blushed. He was quiet for several seconds before answering.
"Y...yes..." he said, his voice sounding hoarse. "Thanks, Sasuke. I'd... really like that." He looked his dark-haired friend in the eye, smiling a smile small but sincerely genuine. "I would like that a lot."
He sniffed a little, his nose running just a tad. Tears were visible in the corners of his eyes.
He rubbed his face with the back of his hand, wiping the tears away.
And Sasuke held his other hand, smiling supportively.
Time passed.
It was lunch break at the Academy, recess in all but name. Students of all ages were taking this time to intermingle a little and bond with one another while their teachers gratefully sipped at their tea or their coffee, glad for this break and reprieve from the chore of managing so many rambunctious young ninja-in-training.
And unfortunately the teachers, so happy to have a break from the drudgery of their job, did not perhaps do as good a job of supervising the playground as they probably should have.
Hinata Hyuuga whimpered, flinching away from her tormentors. She was cornered, crawling away on her hands and knees, cowering and curling up into a ball as they jeered at her, crowing harshly and sneering at her apparent weakness.
"Haw!" laughed one of the bigger, nastier boys from their year. "Look at the little baby, crying for her mommy! I thought the Hyuuga clan was supposed to be full of elites, but this girl is just a sniveling wimp!"
"Yeah!" said a smaller boy, who was standing next to and slightly behind the larger one. He had a slightly mousy appearance about himself, skulking behind his bigger and stronger friends. But he was at least every bit as nasty and meanspirited as they were. "She's such a scaredy-cat! Hinata the scaredy-cat!"
"I know, right?" said the third bully, a rather boyish and homely looking girl who hung out with the other two in a sort of posse. "She acts like she thinks she so much better than us, but she's really just a whimpering little pussy."
Hinata curled up a little more into herself, nearly in the fetal position now as the bullies surrounded her, jeering and taunting, leering and mocking. They were a little ways into a thin bit of forest behind the Leaf Ninja Academy, not far at all from the school proper. But they were still far enough away that the odds of a teacher noticing what was happening and coming to Hinata's aid were slim, very slim indeed.
So she just lay there, motionless, curled into a ball and taking their abuse until the bullies would inevitably get bored and move on. Maybe it wasn't the bravest or most noble course of action, but Hinata had no confidence in herself. The trauma of that attempted kidnapping when she was just a toddler had greatly molded Hinata's mind on a subconscious level.
She could not fight back. So she just lay there, hoping they would get bored soon, ideally before they could get started on more physical things...
But, fortunately or unfortunately, Hinata's hope was in vain.
Something much better happened.
"HEY!" came a voice Hinata recognized vaguely from her class. Glancing up, she saw a blue-eyed blond boy walking her way, a dark look on his face. "Who the heck do you jerks think you are, picking on a girl?"
The unlovely tomboy turned and glowered at the blond.
"I'm a girl," she snapped irritably. "So buzz off, brat. Unless you want to join your girlfriend on the ground there."
She leered at him.
Hinata then heard a snort, and swiveling her gaze a few degress she saw that another boy was standing next to the blond. And this boy was one she recognized.
Sasuke Uchiha.
And if that was Sasuke, then the other boy had to be...
"You sure could have fooled me," snarked the last Uchiha, smirking cockily.
In spite of herself, Hinata giggled, if a little weakly.
The tomboy snarled, hearing this. Whirling around, she glared death at the cowering Hyuuga.
"Why you little—!" she hissed, raising her foot back angrily to kick at Hinata, enraged.
But her leg was caught easily, effortlessly by the blond boy.
By Naruto Uzumaki.
The female bully yelped, feeling the rosy-cheeked blond twist her leg in his grip. She lost her balance, and Naruto yanked back on her leg, making her fall flat on her face.
"You know..." said the blond, letting go of the tomboy's leg, seeing her wiggle her butt angrily as she tried to scramble back to her feet, ankle sprained. "...bullies really piss me off. Picking on a pretty girl like that..."
Hinata blushed, abashed at being called pretty.
"...if you're really so tough," Naruto continued, "then why don't you try picking on someone your own size? ...Like a gorilla!"
The big bully roared, infuriated by this taunt. Charging headlong at the source of his irritation, he swung a huge, meaty fist at the blond's tanned, whisker-marked face. It was by no means a weak punch, this large lad's build giving him some genuine hitting power in taijutsu training, and most of his sparring opponents would fold after just one square hit.
But Naruto caught his fist effortlessly in one hand, looking distinctly unimpressed. The bully's eyes widened, and faster than he could react, he felt a small but powerful fist land itself straight in his solar plexus.
He toppled like a house of cards, falling flat on his ass.
"No form at all," tsk'ed Sasuke dismissively at the large, older boy. "Disgustingly sloppy. Are you really a ninja in training? You fight like a cheap thug."
The bully quivered, shocked at his defeat. He gaped at the pair of younger boys.
"Y-you..." he said slowly, staring at Naruto and Sasuke. "You're those... those two super rookies... Sasuke Uchiha... and Naruto... Uzumaki...?!"
Naruto laughed, grinning from ear to ear.
"In the flesh!" he said, looking so cocky right then and there that Hinata wouldn't have been surprised if his nose suddenly grew to resemble a tengu's beak.
The Hyuuga felt a tingling warmth in her belly.
She blushed.
The third and only remaining bully, the snivelling rat-like sycophant, promptly turned tail and fled. He scurried away fearfully, all courage leaving him at the sight of his bigger and stronger friends lying on the ground, defeated.
Hinata smiled gratefully at her two saviors. Most especially at Naruto.
And he returned that smile ten-fold.
Hinata melted like butter on a frying pan.
A/N: So, I got a challenge from someone named Zweig over on FFN, who said he liked both Feeding Frenzy and A Lewd New World, and wondered if I would be up this.
And somehow, despite all of the stuff I'm already doing, I wound up being intrigued by the challenge, and decided to see if I couldn't take it on. I actually wrote a really long rough draft, too, that goes all the way up to graduation day. But it took me these eight days to turn enough of that rough draft into a chapter for me to post it.
Just for a general idea of this might be like, the suggested title for the challenge he gave me was Naruto the Demon God. But for the fic itself, I decided to go with a title more accurate to its nature...
(hypernike is greek for "more than conquerors"; it has nothing to do with the shoes)
I dunno how high priority this fic will be, though. A Lewd New World's following is MASSIVE by my standards, and Feeding Frenzy fills a very specific niche with my own twisted, twisted fetishes. Honestly, the odds of me finishing this fic at all are astronomically low, unless I am VERY liberal in skimming over minor plot. But I at least have that rough draft of up to after the genin exams, so I should at least get that far. Maybe farther.
Hopefully farther.
