CHAPTER I Anytime Senpai
A hawk was soaring overhead, riding a thermal higher and higher and then drifting down in a large circle only to spiral up the column of warm rising air again. Its downward path encompassed the entire village of Konohagakure, still putting itself back together since the battle with the Six Paths of Pain. Progress had been made, and there were now more buildings than barren space, but it would still be some time before the small rodents the hawk was hoping to spy would make themselves comfortable in the once-again young village. Banking, the great bird flew past the faces of past Hokage carved into the cliff-face and rose over the plateau. Here, there were woods and fields, saved from the blast that had crippled the village. Sunlight warmed its feathers and it found a new thermal to ride, spiraling up and over a green hill where three figures reclined staring up at the sky. Farthest to the left was Shiranui Akiyuki, a young chunin dressed in Konoha's traditional chunin garb of a green flak vest over dark blue attire; the dark garments were, rather than the long-sleeved shirt and thick pants most chunin wore, a high-collared sleeveless top, loose pants that cinched just below her knees, and thick fingerless gloves that went up to her shoulders hiding kunai, metal bracers, and yards of ribbon. Her hitai-ate was tied around her waist like a belt, visible under the flak jacket only because her arms were currently stretched out over her head playing with her long pixie-cut black hair. Her feet, covered in soft black sandals and socks, twitched in the grass to some tune only she could hear. Farthest to the right was her team mate, Izumi Yamashiro. Despite being male, his appearance was more feminine than Shiranui's. Shiranui was petite and fair, almost cherubic. Izumi was elegant and refined like a goddess, with ivory skin, a narrow jaw line and a very straight nose. Much of his face would typically be hidden by white fringe that now was swept to the side exposing the hitai-ate he wore faithfully tied over his forehead. A very long ponytail secured at the nape of his neck fluttered in the breeze around him. He stared blandly at the sky, the blue scene reflected in his dark amber eyes. He like their sensei, was a jonin and wore a higher-collared green flak vest over a long-sleeved mesh shirt that reached his chin, leather and metal bracers, and uneven black leggings. He also wore a short sleeveless yukata in a soft lilac shade, secured with a wide belt and wrapped with a red ribbon that reached his knees when he was standing. His white socks were amazingly clean in his black sandals, and his feet were pressed together stoically to match the arms crossed firmly across his chest. Between the two of them was their sensei, Genma Shiranui, his trademark senbon hanging lazily from him lips. His brown eyes were soft as they followed the flight of the hawk overhead. He had temporarily removed his hitai-ate and his dark brown hair fell loose and free. He wore his standard jonin uniform, the high flak collar snug up near his ears. His free hand was reaching casually towards the sky, drifting as he traced the clouds. It appeared someone was missing, there was a sort of emptiness, an unfilled space to the other side of the young kunoichi, as if the grass were depressed in the form of a body though no one lay there. Shiranui's black opal eyes opened slowly and she turned her head towards the empty space and for a moment she could see him laying there, the fourth member of their team, his tousled brown hair dancing in the breeze and showing off its golden highlights, playful green eyes looking back at her and laughing. "What's up Haku?" The ghost said with a soft smile before the vision faded and Shiranui sighed, turning her face back to the sky. "It's been a while." Shiranui mused quietly. The others were quiet for a moment as they too remembered their missing teammate. The tree that topped the hill behind them shuddered as the breeze picked up for a moment and it loosed white and dark pink petals and sprinkled them over the three ninja. Genma caught a whole flower in his upraised hand and twisted it slowly before letting it fall. "It has." The jonin said, his even tone masking any feelings he had on the matter. For the next few minutes, all they heard was the sound of the wind, the sound of the grass growing, the distant sound of progress and repair in the village below them, and an even more distant cry from the hawk flying above them as it called for its mate. Shiranui leaned forward and propped herself up on her elbows, her hair falling forward to frame her face as she tucked her chin to her chest. "Yes, Haku?" Genma asked. He had learned over the years that Shiranui would do this sort of thing when she wanted to talk about something, but felt it would be rude to speak because she was about to interrupt a moment of thought. "What do you think of? When you remember?" She asked in an uncharacteristically small voice, like she didn't really want to know or was afraid of the answer. Genma tilted his head, further messing up his hair, and looked at her. "Mmm, what do you think of, Haku?" Shiranui immediately thought of the first time she'd met her team. She'd been so nervous to make an impression, specifically a good impression, on her new team specially assigned to Genma who had never trained genin before but was known to be an elite shinobi. And she was the only girl! Not that this wasn't a normal occurrence, but it was three boys and little her! Izumi had been cool and distant, but the other boy had been cool in a good way, warm and excited. His charisma and his smile had been infectious. "When Team Genma was formed." Shiranui said with a smile that she felt like she'd caught from the memory. Genma watched her passively for a moment before cracking a smile, shifting the senbon in his mouth. "What about you, Izumi?" Genma asked the white-haired jonin, who had been silently listening without expression. Izumi shifted, his arms sliding apart and his hands coming together to form the seal TIGER before speaking in his deep but feminine voice. "Our first battle, with Horiwakumi." "Oh, I'd forgotten about the old Sunatora." Shiranui exclaimed. "You would, of course, you were unconscious for half the fight." Izumi admonished, rolling his eyes in one of his rare but heartfelt displays of emotion. Shiranui's eyes flew wide open and she gaped, sitting up higher. "That wasn't my fault!" She whined and Izumi smiled and snorted softly, closing his eyes. Genma also smiled and closed his eyes. Shiranui settled down after throwing a handful of grass unsuccessfully at Izumi; she flopped back on the ground and reached up with both hands, slowly weaving random seals and looking through them at the sky. "Sensei, what was yours?" She asked suddenly, remembering he hadn't answered her question. Genma was silent; visions of eyes usually bright and cheerful flashing cold jade and fury, screams and frustration, a boy destroying himself and the helplessness of a teacher who can't understand came to his mind and he felt a chill deep inside. None of these thoughts or emotions revealed themselves on his face nor in his passive body and he opened his eyes slowly and sat up a little, reaching for some of the flower petals that had fallen from the tree. "Well," Shiranui perked up and waited eagerly, even Izumi had opened his eyes and was watching their sensei, curious to hear his thoughts. Genma studied the petal between his fingers closely and switched the senbon in his mouth to the other side before standing in one swift and easy motion, letting the petal fall as he slipped his hands into his pockets and looked back at the others. "I'm not telling." Shiranui stared for a moment thinking perhaps he was joking, but the grin that crinkled the corners of his closed eyes was all too familiar, always his follow up to a successful joke, con, or prank. Izumi rolled his eyes and covered the lower part of his face with one hand to hide a silent chuckle. Shiranui was much less composed and squealed in outrage, leaping up and pummeling the grinning man with handfuls of grass. "Sensei, that's not fair!" "Haku, when did I ever teach you that things are fair?" Genma asked calmly, still grinning and raising an arm to shield himself. Shiranui desisted and curled her hands into fists firmly at her sides like a child in a tantrum, complete with a pout to make even the most stoic ANBU agent cave. "Back to the village now you two, there's still a lot of work to get done." Izumi stood in one smooth motion as Genma had and began walking down the hill towards the village. Shiranui hesitated, boring holes into the jonin before her for a moment before huffing and fluffing her hair with both hands and skipping after her teammate. "I'll get you Sensei, you know I will! Just wait!" The kunoichi called back with a twirl and a flourish once she'd caught up with Izumi. Genma let an easy smile grace his face as he watched the two continue towards the village, one poking playfully at the other and being calmly rebuked. He was proud of them, they had come so far since he had first been faced with the challenge of training a team of three genin. Three genin, he thought. The jonin bent his head forward to brush the grass clippings from his hair and attempted to smooth it a little before securing his hitai-ate backwards on his head like a bandanna. Tilting his head back and pocketing his hands again, he stared out to the valley, looking beyond the village to the land beyond where somewhere his missing genin waited, possibly staring back towards Konohagakure. "Happy birthday," Genma murmured, letting his voice be swallowed up as the wind picked up, "Senjo Yuriki."5 YEARS EARLIER
"Hokage, there must be some mistake." "No mistake, I came to this decision myself after great thought." The Third Hokage stood slowly from behind his desk to approach the tokubetsu jonin standing aghast before him, the senbon he could always be seen with hanging from his lips had actually fallen from its perch and rolled across the floor. Hiruzen Sarutobi made his way towards Genma Shiranui and took one of his outstretched hands in both of his own. "I believe that you are the only one who can make these three true shinobi of Konoha." Sarutobi squeezed the hand he held in earnest but he could see in Genma's eyes that the man still did not truly understand. "There must be someone else, a proper jonin with all the skills, with the experience..." Genma was grasping at straws, begging without saying the words specifically. "I'm terrible with children." Sarutobi laughed at the lame finish. "Everyone is until they try," the Hokage said, releasing the jonin's hand and moving back to his desk to retrieve some papers before returning to the younger man and handing him the file. "It is said the captured bird grows wise and one day learns to open his cage with his beak, and until then he will never stop trying to be free." Genma looked at the first page, a student profile giving him information about the twelve-year-old girl with dark eyes and pink cheeks in the attached photograph. She had an over-long pink ribbon tied around her neck. Her black hair was cut messily to frame her face with the dark locks; several long strands stuck up in front and didn't appear to want to settle with the rest of her hair. She was had a nervous smile that showed a gap where one of her teeth was late coming in. She looked delectable and Genma immediately felt uncomfortable at the thought. "Hokage," he began slowly, looking up from the page. The aging man looked back at him without saying anything and Genma hesitated before changing his tactic. "Do you think being in a cage will make me stronger?" "I never said the bird was you." Sarutobi said, looking Genma in the eye. "You will come to understand and you will see why I chose you to lead this team. All children are special, Genma, but these children especially need you. Now, you have some reading to do I think before tomorrow." "Yes sir," Genma conceded. At the Hokage's dismissing nod he turned slowly on his heel and left, fishing in the pockets of his flak jacket for another senbon; he needed something to distract him and settle his nerves now. As soon as he was out of the building he made a bee-line for the one place he knew he could always find the person he needed to help him sort this out. He'd be there, the devil, engrossed in one of his smutty little novellas. He'd better be there, Genma thought sourly. How could this have happened?Kakashi Hatake was perched on a branch of his favorite tree near the memorial obelisk at the Third Training Ground, his nose effectively buried in Icha Icha Paradise. He never found it lacking; excitement, adventure, romance, risque... all in one little book. Despite being all but absorbed by the little book, Kakashi was far too keen not to hear the approaching footsteps, and it was a stride with which he was familiar. Without shifting position in the least, he waited and kept reading.
Genma almost walked passed the tree but suddenly stopped almost directly beneath the white-haired man and let the handful of papers the Hokage had given him fall to the ground. Kakashi sighed and closed his eyes, pocketing Icha Icha and vaulting down from the tree branch to land on the ground before the older ninja. He took idle notice of the papers that the man had discarded and shrugged his hands into his pant pockets, shifting his weight to one side and leaning back. "Genma-senpai," Kakashi murmured from under his trademark mask. The older man's brown eyes were flashing oddly and Kakashi immediately made note; Genma was frustrated, something had set him off and he was certainly a little volatile at the moment. It wasn't totally uncharacteristic of him, the younger ninja had known him to be.. aggressive.. at times, but that had been years ago when Kakashi was still more boy than man." Hankon-gao," Genma muttered back with a smirk. "After all we've been through, that's the best you've got? I would have expected something creative from Sagi-shi." Kakashi retorted, brushing off the offensive nickname. The corner of the older ninja's mouth twitched and eventually he cracked a smile. Trust Kakashi to humble him just enough to set things straight. "I'm not sure I'm in a creative mood at the moment." Genma said, posturing. Genma was shorter than Kakashi, but he was built and muscular compared to the white-haired man's lithe physique. What he lacked in height he certainly made up for in his mildly intimidating stance. It was one of the things that had initially attracted Kakashi, his masculinity. Not that Kakashi didn't consider himself masculine, but there was something about that appearance of brute strength that was definitely appealing. "You do seem very intentioned. Should I ask what has you unsettled?" Kakashi asked, tilting his head and raising the eyebrow of his one exposed eye. "Perhaps later. I'm pretty bent on what I want right now." "You know, I've always enjoyed your straightforwardness." Kakashi said, and he followed this statement by coyly biting his lip through his mask. Genma shrugged and reached an open-palmed hand towards him, his half grin becoming more of a lecherous leer. "I do know," he muttered wryly. Things were faster than Kakashi remembered. Every other time he'd had sex with Genma, whose musky scent reminded the young man of oak and oddly the color orange, he enjoyed taking his time. He had a penchant for teasing and ravishing, which Kakashi had made a particular point of learning and applying to almost all of his other sexual relationships. Usually he would talk him down to his underclothes, and then he would sensually and slowly remove the rest himself. Not this time though. This time is was almost all business, all clothes quickly removed, the occasional affectionate nip about the neck, the significantly more aggressive bite on the shoulder, hands raking down naked flesh, and very quickly Kakashi was supporting himself against the nearest tree with Genma thrusting mercilessly into him. Kakashi was thankful that he'd been well-adjusted to this kind of barrage or he might find this sort of thing unpleasureable. But Genma, even when out of sorts, was a respectful lover and as he threw himself into Kakashi he massaged the lowest point of Kakashi's back where his pelvic bones met his spine, inciting the powerful tingling sensation running up the thin man's spine. "Yes," Kakashi hissed. Genma leaned forward, quickening his pace and Kakashi felt his hot breath on the back of his neck. That, added to the massage, on top of the fact that Genma's handsome member was now pounding irresistibly against his prostate made it all but impossible not to be soaring over the edge. Kakashi shuddered and he groaned at his release, feeling Genma pull himself out and quickly follow suit. He always did that, and despite the minute notion that Kakashi was somehow unworthy to be graced with the older man's seed, it meant less to clean up later. Both men stood sweating and panting heavily for a moment before Genma playfully swatted Kakashi on the ass and stooped to pick up his pants and tug them on before sitting on the ground and picking up one of the previously discarded papers. Kakashi sighed and casually brushed his hands off before pulling on his own pants and his skin-tight black shirt, pulling up his mask over his nose, and peering over Genma's shoulder at the page in his hand. "Is that what I think it is?" Kakashi asked with raised eyebrows, carefully keeping his Sharingan eye closed. "Probably." Genma muttered, slowly becoming disheartened again. "That explains a lot." Kakashi mused, reaching for another piece of paper and looking at it. Attached to the page he had picked up was a photo of a boy that for a moment reminded him of himself; white hair, dark eyes, very pale skin.. wait, this was a girl... no, the profile said it was a twelve-year-old boy. The boy's dark eyes had an amber tint that reflected the camera lens in them despite the fact that they appeared bland and otherwise empty, devoid of emotion... Kakashi suddenly realized why this boy reminded him of himself and he quickly scanned the profile. "How does one become an ANBU agent without becoming a genin at least? Very interesting," he mused, offering the page to Genma, who flung the papers into the air and reached up to the sky, sucking a breath through his teeth, before dragging both hands down his face. Kakashi burst out laughing and patted him on the back. "Oh it's not that bad. They give you the rugrats, you train them, and voila, you've made shinobi. It's almost like having children, except less messy." Kakashi insisted. Genma made a face at him. "You, of all people, know that's not true. You haven't even successfully kept and trained a single team." "Yes, but that's why I said you, as in you specifically. You'll be fine, you like children." Kakashi said, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively. Genma flung his arm back and hit Kakashi hard in the chest. For a moment Kakashi knelt there, gasping for breath, before there was a popping sound and a flash of smoke and Kakashi became a log and toppled to the ground. Genma looked up to see the real Kakashi, straightening his clothes as he sat back on his branch with his face buried in Icha Icha. "You are no help." Genma snapped ruefully. "And you are a terrible liar." Kakashi retorted with a smile. After a few minutes in which Genma fumed quietly, he gathered up the rest of his clothing and redressed. He then took care to pick up each paper Sarutobi had given him and looked at each as he stacked them together. He stood for a moment, silently contemplating his situation and trying again to think of a way to discourage the Hokage from this choice. Perhaps he could find a jonin interested in taking on this particular set of children, but as the thought crossed his mind he knew that Sarutobi must have had his reasons and would be truly disappointed in him if he did not even try to complete this mission. And as that was the case, he knew the best place for him to read and learn about these genin-to-be was his own favorite spot in the meadow overlooking the village. "Thanks Kakashi," Genma murmured as he began walking back towards the village. "Anytime, Senpai. Anytime." Kakashi said softly without looking away from his book."Shiranui Akiyuki," Genma murmured. He was settled in the back of a restaurant in the village not far from his apartment. He had intended to go to his spot up in the meadow, but then he'd gotten hungry - sex did that to him sometimes - and then he'd gotten sake... Now he was pouring over the pages the Hokage had given him, switching between chewing on a senbon needle and using it to trace lines of text before him. He couldn't help but get stuck on the irony of one of his new wards names, how convenient. "Ha, Shiranui...
"Coincidence? I think not!" His outburst went thankfully unnoticed since the restaurant was nearly empty. Of course it was, everyone had better things to do than get bent out of shape over spending the next several months training genin. Genma really didn't have a problem with children, he liked children well enough, they were the future of the village as Sarutobi would so often say. But Genma had grown accustomed to a certain degree of freedom that came with his rank. "Wait, wait, this isn't me," he muttered to himself and it dawned on him: it was a test, a challenge to make a change in himself. He had become too familiar with a certain lifestyle, a certain regimen of missions and rules. This was a chance for him to develop himself and his skills as much as train his team. Having been trained as a bodyguard, maybe it did make sense to pair him with this particular group, his abilities would help them become more skilled shinobi without bringing harm to themselves or others. "I don't know if I'm ready to submit to that," he muttered, collapsing a little on the table. He would sleep on it. And mediate, that always helped these kinds of things. Or maybe he'd go find Kakashi again. No, the white-haired man would probably just make jokes and push him away. Things were not the same between them now that they were older, seasoned, and Kakashi wasn't the cold and callous ANBU agent he'd been when Genma first seduced him. Seduced may not have been the right word since he didn't make a particular habit of going after boys or men, he actually preferred women. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before popping the senbon back between his teeth, shuffling the papers together, and fishing around in his pockets to pay the bill. The hostess smiled at him as he left, the corners of her eyes crinkling and a dimple showing in her left cheek. He paused for a moment once he was outside and considered going back and propositioning her. But, he reminded himself, he needed an early night and so, shifting the senbon from one side of his mouth to the other, he did his best to saunter home without stumbling. After falling into his bed, he took a last look at the three photos, which he had unclipped from the profiles. The girl with the missing tooth and the overly cheerful smile. The white-haired ex-ANBU boy with empty eyes. The third, another boy, this one looking surprised by the photograph, one of his hands in his flyaway golden-brown hair, bright green eyes glossy from moving during the shot. What a mess. Thanks for reading! J'adore reviews, questions, ratings, comments, all that fun jazz!
