A/N: This may have started out somewhat with SIN, but that isn't the final pairing for this story. The final will be Kisame/Naruto. So please enjoy the ride with this fic.
~*~ Fear and insecurity gripped his throat in a vice while trepidation had his heart in its cold, boney fingers. He had been sitting on the couch for what seemed like eternity now, but had only roughly been half an hour. Traffic must have been worse than usual given it was almost summer now and the pretty days were drawing more people out into the streets. Naruto Uzumaki had no such problem with traffic that day since school was only half a day due to some staff meeting and he didn’t drive. Itachi and Sasuke always had a car waiting for him after school since they could afford such a thing. Naruto had gotten used to their extravagant ways after two years of dealing with them. He wasn’t needed so he had been allowed to go home early. Of course he knew it was because he couldn’t the cough he had for weeks, the sound of barking making even the school nurse cringe with pity. He didn’t want it, but couldn’t help it as she treated him with special care. She was aware of Naruto’s inclinations from the beginning and so they had formed a friendship that was almost flirty in nature. There was never a day where she didn’t tease him about something or the other. And being one of the privileged few that knew he had two lovers, she cracked jokes about his cane constantly. It was refreshing in a way to not bring his accident up in everyday conversation. It wasn’t as though people had meant to be malicious. It was just their nature taking over and asking too many questions that made Naruto squirm. When he was approached by complete strangers and asked personal questions, he was so uncomfortable that he shifted his feet. Some of them made his skin crawl with just how invasive they were. He thanked his lucky stars that Sasuke or Itachi was with him when the questions became too much and they scared the curious person off. As time wore on though, Naruto had to defend himself. Itachi and Sasuke were no longer by his side to defend him and help him through the questions. He had always felt cold when this happened and his lovers weren’t there to support him. After the encounters, they still happened at least twice a week, Naruto wanted to scrub his skin raw. In fact, there were a few times he had since he thought the people questioning him were perverts since they had asked about his sex life. While he was able to have sex, there were times when they had to be so vanilla it hurt. Before his accident, they were so creative they could have put the kama sutra to shame. But with his legs the way they were, he was lucky if he could hold his body in the doggystyle position. So their sex life suffered as well, especially in the beginning and he couldn’t walk at all. He had given them permission to have sex one another, but he had to have been present when it happened. Naruto refused to be left behind in that aspect, feeling that their relationship would have spiralled with him absent. They had been able to save it in the beginning, Itachi and Sasuke immediately realizing what they had been doing wrong and correcting their actions. Lately though, they weren’t correcting and it broke his heart, if it could be broken any more than what it was. Naruto needed time and space away from them in order to find himself again. He felt as though his disability were controlling every aspect of his life and he wanted to grab his life back. He couldn’t do it if the two people he loved weren’t there to support him. Weariness was a constant companion of his and in the classroom he was able to be the teacher his kids needed him to be. But at home, and by himself, he was almost a mess trying to figure out his life. It wasn’t like he could talk about his insecurities with his lovers, the last time Naruto had tried, he had been ignored in favor of other activities. The constant being brushed off was old and he didn’t want to deal with it every again. The constant coddling after his first surgery to try and repair what little could be, had Naruto’s temper flaring to all new heights. He had been waited on hand and foot, fed like he had been an invalid and not allowed to do anything that could be considered stress. It was the first time he had ever yelled at Itachi and Sasuke and it was the last as well. Yelling had never solved anything, but it had felt good in the heat of the moment. The sound of the door opening finally met his ears, drawing Naruto from his thoughts. He was glad he had taken the cough suppressant as soon as he had walked through the door. What he had to do wouldn’t be easy and coughing would only hinder him in saying his piece. He had loved the two men he was involved with, but ever since his car accident over a year ago, things had changed drastically. He was paraplegic with some ability to walk. Naruto tired out way too easily and his legs would just give out on him with no warning. So he hadn’t been able to enjoy the activities he loved with Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha. But it wasn’t only that weighing heavily on his mind, it was the fact that their support had dwindled over the months. They didn’t attend physiotherapy with him any more, opting to drop him off while they went hiking. But they weren’t the only bad guys in this whole mess. Naruto never talked about what bothered him with them, preferring to keep his troubles to himself. So their relationship was strained at the best of times and he knew there was nothing he could do to repair it. When the brothers entered the living room, they stopped at the sight of a solemn Naruto. He was never quiet and had always greeted them at the door with a kiss and a smile. Today, that sunny and brilliant smile was a dull, worried frown. It automatically set the atmosphere from an expectant one to something dense and sour. The taste in his dry mouth was like cotton on a hot day as he tried to move his mouth and nothing came out. Immediately Sasuke on the defensive, his dark eyes growing cold while Itachi’s expression remained somewhat readable. That meant he knew and expected what was happening. It shouldn’t have surprised Naruto that he knew, Itachi had always been sharper at reading Naruto than Sasuke. It was with a heavy heart that Naruto gestured for them to sit. Tense silence filled the room as they waited for Naruto to speak, standing still as statues. “I’m leaving you,” Naruto rambled in a rushed breath, his courage building to that one moment and then flooding out. He knew if he didn’t say those words first, he would never say them at all. It was a defense mechanism he had developed when he was a child and his parents had caught him in a lie. It didn’t matter how cool and collected he was, he would always spill his words into one large rush. The room was deadly silent, Sasuke immediately stalking from the room while Itachi remained and took a seat on the loveseat across from his . Naruto lowered his eyes, he didn’t know the feeling that welled up within him, only that it hurt that Sasuke had walked out and hadn’t let Naruto explain himself. The words were out now and he couldn’t them back even if he wanted to. It was final, they could never go back to what they were, even if Naruto was forgiven for the words he had said. The damage had already been done and the trust was shattered between them. Itachi was silent for several minutes, never moving or showing any hint of what he had been thinking. It always unnerved Naruto since Sasuke was easier to read, just by walking out, he knew the younger Uchiha was hurt, but Naruto didn’t know if it was his heart or his pride. Sasuke had always been proud, and nothing could ever break his pride. Naruto had to wonder now if he had done that and it made his own heart ache that he was the person who had shattered Sasuke’s pride. “We have been growing apart these past few months,” Itachi said, leaning forward and placing a gentle hand on Naruto’s chin, raising the younger mans head up to look him in the eyes. “We have been neglecting you and your needs without meaning to and for that I apologize, Naruto.” Naruto almost flinched when Itachi addressed him by his name and not his nickname. It was the finality he needed to nod his head that he had heard Itachi. It didn’t mean forgiveness just yet, that could take years for him to hand over to them. He was still angry, but Itachi understood what had happened between them to make them drift apart. It didn’t take a psychic to know that they had reached the end of their ten year relationship. It had been a good run for a threesome, Naruto could admit that much. But he had to wonder if they would have reached this end on their own without the catalyst of this relationship. It was just another what if that had to be dumped into a box of unanswered questions. “I have already moved my things to a suitable apartment and moved my cell phone off your plan,” Naruto said over the lump in his throat. He didn’t want to do this, but it was the right thing and that’s what made it so hard. His father had always preached the more right something was, the harder the road it was to travel. “I expected as much. Just please take care of yourself, Naruto.” Itachi said softly, his hand sliding and cupping the side of the blond’s face. “If you need anything, give me a call. Sasuke will need time to calm down, but he’ll come around.” Naruto nodded before a gentle kiss was placed on his lips. The touch of Itachi’s lips no longer sent a thrill through his body. Naruto couldn’t think of the last time Itachi’s kiss had stirred his blood and made him want the other man. It shocked him that he couldn’t remember and he wondered just how lost they were. He knew it was a goodbye kiss and it told him that Itachi still cared even though they were no longer together. Tears pricked at his eyes as the Uchiha pulled away, a thumb brushing the salty water from the corner of his eye. “I am proud of you for doing what is best for you, Naruto.” “Goodbye, Itachi.” Naruto responded softly, his voice getting caught in his throat before he stood and placed the key to the apartment in the glass bowl on the end table near the door. He didn’t look back as he left his former home, leaning heavily on his cane as he trekked to the elevator. He was slow in his walk, the damage to his spinal cord wouldn’t allow him to walk at a brisk pace or even run. He had come to terms with that fact only a few months ago. But at least his determination and hard work allowed him to even walk, a feat most people gave up on. Naruto walked out into the sun, frowning that the weather was cheery while he was not. He always thought it was a kick to the nuts when he was feeling down and the sun was out creating a beautiful day. He wanted rain, no matter how cliche it was, so that he could wallow in his new apartment. Walking down to the curb, there was a car waiting on him, he smiled warily when the window rolled and Sakura Haruno’s face came into view. “Get in,” she commanded, as if she had sense his mood as Naruto opened the door and slid uncomfortably into the sedan. His cane was arranged under the console so that the top of it would peek out just under his arm. It was a custom made one, gifted to him by his parents after he had learned to walk again. The top was a mahogany carved toad wearing an open yukata and smoking a pipe. He loved the thing at first sight even though Sasuke had grumbled about how lame it was and that he was a full grown man who needed a plain cane. Sakura peeled away from the curb, jerking Naruto’s body before he had buckled his seatbelt. He gripped the dashboard with a tight grip as she weaved through traffic. Her driving scared him to death, but he had no choice since his father was working a double shift at the hospital and his papa was buried in paperwork at social services. Kiba had a surgery today while Hinata was at an important business meeting. So it had been Sakura, his last choice, who could be there for him. “How did it go?” She asked as she turned her head to Naruto, once the car halted at a stoplight. Naruto gave a heavy sigh as he rubbed his temples. Sakura was one of those naturally curious people who had to know everything. It didn’t bother him all that much since she was a big sister figure to him. But sometimes, he wished she had more tact. It wouldn’t have killed to at least work her way up to the question by asking him how he felt. But then again, that tactlessness provided many an entertaining time while bar hopping before the accident. “It just went, Sakura,” Naruto admitted with a tired voice. He wanted to take his medication and fall asleep on his new queen sized bed. He had known buying anything smaller would not have sufficed since he was a sprawler when he slept. It would be hard getting used to the fact that there wouldn’t be two bodies on either side of him. Naruto had entertained the thought of buying two body pillows, but he didn’t want to become dependant on them. He had to remain strong in order for him to heal. “I never thought you guys would end up like this,” she said sadly as the light turned green and she moved the car. Her eyes watched the road as she continued to speak to Naruto. Traffic had seemed to weeded out, the cars not bumper to bumper like he had imagined earlier that day. “Same here, Sakura, but let’s not talk about it. I just need time,” Naruto responded, his tone heavy with so many emotions that were almost undecipherable. He didn’t want to talk about his failed relationship, it wasn’t the right time since the sting was still so fresh in his heart. One day he would be able to talk about without the pain, but it wasn’t today. “You’re taking the metro right? I mean, I can drive you back and forth so you don’t have to!” Sakura’s tone was concerned since Naruto was paraplegic and he would be on the metro bus alone. She knew the kind of people who rode it and feared for Naruto’s safety since he couldn’t really defend all that well. There were a few maneuvers he could perform, but she didn’t know if they were efficient enough. “You sound like Iruka,” Naruto gruffed in annoyance as he rolled his blue eyes. There was a semblance of normalcy falling around him as they conversed. It was almost as if the day had never happened and he was going on a vacation with Sakura. But he knew deep down that wasn’t the truth. He could only hide his problems so long before they overtook him. “I’ll be fine on my own, it’s not like I’m completely defenseless,” he added after a few moments of silence. “You guys are worrying too much about this. I may be crippled, but damnit I’m still a person. I can take care of myself for Christ’s sake. I am thirty after all!” “I know, it’s just...we want you to be safe, Naruto.” Sakura’s tired tone drifted through the car. Her concern was real and it touched him a little. She wasn’t just putting on a show to make herself seem like a good friend without really being there. “I know you guys do, but I need my freedom. I need to be able to find myself on my own and while I love you to death, you need to back off just a little. I appreciate the concern and everything, but it’s just...overwhelming. Give me a few days to get my head straight and we can talk as much as you want,” he offered the ultimatum with a diplomatic tone, not wanting to step on Sakura’s toes since she was his oldest friend. He didn’t want to lose over something so petty. “I understand, Naruto. Just know that we are here for you just in case you need one of those three in the morning phone calls. I do kinda miss those.” The confession was admitted in a shy tone as Sakura weaved through traffic. Her words warmed his heart a little, Naruto had missed the phone calls as well. They had always called each that early in the morning when they were bored and just wanted to talk some bullshit. Those conversations would always have a special place in Naruto’s heart since they bared their souls to one another and left nothing out. “I miss them too, maybe once this weekend is over and I get caught up on grading papers.” He answered as they pulled into the parking lot in his new apartment complex. It was a five story building that reserved handicap accessible living space on the first floor. Naruto had been lucky snagging the last open one last week. If it hadn’t been for his friend Neji helping out with living arrangements, he never would have found it in the first place. Naruto had shopped for an apartment before, having been with Itachi and Sasuke since they were in college together. Moving in with them after two years of dating had seemed so right he couldn’t think that anything would be wrong with it. So when he had been visiting Neji the beginning of last week, he had a newspaper spread out before him as he circled various apartments, not even thinking of his disability. Neji had stepped in and helped him narrow down his choices. Since he was living on a teacher’s income now, he had to be more careful with his money and be responsible in how he spent it. Neji had taught him how to budget his funds so that he would be able to live comfortably. The adjustment was going to be hard since Naruto wouldn’t be treated to five star restaurants for dates anymore. There would also be no more spoiling and getting what he wanted almost on the spot. But they were sacrifices he would live with because Naruto wasn’t a material man. In fact, he had left some of the gifts Itachi and Sasuke had gotten him at the apartment because he didn’t feel right in taking them. It made him feel that he had been using the Uchiha’s for their money instead of actually loving them. Naruto did wonder though if they would try and give the items back to him when they did notice them in their apartment. It was a funny thought that had him chuckling lightly. “What’s so funny?” Sakura asked, curious that Naruto would be chuckling at a time like this. “It’s just I imagined Itachi and Sasuke bringing the gifts they had gotten me to my apartment and telling me to keep them,” Naruto answered, his chuckle turning into hysterical laughter as he covered his mouth. Sakura joined in with her own melodious laugh as she jerked the wheel in her hand a little. “Wow, that’s a nice building!” Sakura commented as her soft green eyes looked over the building with curiosity. It was a quaint complex and looked like it was safe enough. She was worried about shady characters taking advantage of Naruto. She hated the idea of him living alone, but he wouldn’t accept any of his friends offers for them to move in with him. He was strong, Sakura knew that, but one person could only take so much before they broke. She only hoped that Naruto wouldn’t break too hard when he finally allowed himself time to think on everything. “Yea, wait until you see the inside!” Naruto said as he clambered out of the car and grabbed his cane. The pain was starting in his hips again, spreading down his right leg and then causing it to go slightly numb. He could make it to the apartment before he had to collapse. Naruto didn’t want Sakura to see him in such a vulnerable state where he couldn’t walk. He would hardly allow Itachi and Sasuke to help when he had fallen and had problems getting back up. His hips were starting to throb with pain, he knew the numbness would come next. All Naruto had to to do was make it to the apartment and he could sit down like there wasn’t a problem. The lean frame was trembling a bit as Naruto forced himself to make it to the apartment. A small sweat began to work its way over his body at the effort it took not to fall down. If Sakura was aware of his state, she didn’t say a word as they finally made it to his front. On the front was a small decoration, it was a small flag of their state, Konoha. The slight breeze caught it and waved it as Naruto jabbed his key into the hole and twisted, opening the door and gesturing for Sakura to walk through first. “Welcome to the bachelor pad,” Naruto joked lamely, his heart wasn’t in it as he stepped in behind Sakura, his cane wiggling with his weight as they walked deeper into the apartment. It wasn’t big, but it wasn’t too small either. It was the right size for one person and Naruto thought it homely. He had just finished up the decor the other night with the help of Kiba and Hinata. It was a simple decor, nothing too bright or hard on the eyes. Pictures from over the years were hung in chronological order in a wave over the couch. Naruto couldn’t decide if he had wanted to add one or two of him and his lovers and decided that it was for the best if he did. Despite everything that had happened in the past few months, he couldn’t cut them from his life completely and the time they spent together was precious. “Where’d you find the couch?” Sakura asked as she sat down on it and sank a little, her green eyes darting around the room and taking everything in. “Dad and Papa had it in a storage building somewhere. They weren’t using it so they said I could use it until I get on my feet,” Naruto explained as he sat down beside her, his hips getting the relief they needed. A small, happy sigh escaped his lips at the ability to sit down finally in something other than a car. “And your bed?” She asked. It seemed as though Sakura was being extra nosey today and Naruto wanted to tell her off. But he hated being alone and wanted to keep her around as long as possible. “Parents got it for me as an early birthday present,” Naruto snorted, using the same line Kakashi had given him when he and Iruka had shown up on his doorstep with a giant box in tow. He shouldn’t have been surprised that they would have pulled something like this. His parents had always spoiled him, giving him gifts when he didn’t ask for them. Naruto knew that without them buying the bed and mattress he needed for his body, he never would have been able to afford it. “Ah, they spoil you way too much.” Sakura teased as she leaned back and sighed. “I can’t imagine how you’re feeling right now, Naruto. You’ve been with them for ten years and to just...break it off like this.” “I know,” Naruto whispered sadly, even though he didn’t want to talk about his failed relationship, he felt the need to in that small moment. He needed to get at least some of this off his chest before he spiralled into depression. Naruto didn’t want to sucuumb to something like that ever again and so he began to talk a little. “I feel like it’s some sort of bad dream and that Itachi will wake me any moment. I’ll tell him about what happened and he would just laugh it off while Sasuke calls me a moron. When I told them I was leaving them, Sasuke just, he just walked out, Sakura. He didn’t even say a word to me.” Pain flared in his chest at the admission, Sasuke had always been there for him and supported him no matter what, ever since they had met in the ER when he was a little kid. It hurt to know that the man possibly didn’t care about him or was so raving mad at him that they couldn’t repair the damage that had been done. But the thing that had hurt the most was the fact that he might be blamed for the failing of their relationship. Sasuke was good at pinning the fault to another person, even if he were the one responsible. The last year and a half had been a rollercoaster from his accident to rehabilitation to learning to walk again. It was stressful on them because Sasuke had been adamant that Naruto would go back to normal after physical therapy. It wasn’t the case though, while Naruto gained a little of his walking ability back, he wouldn’t be able to run again. The news had devastated all three men, dowsing their dreams and hopes in kerosene before a match was lit and they were on fire. Naruto wasn’t sure who had taken that particular news the hardest, him or Sasuke. Itachi had known all along Naruto wouldn’t gain his full abilities back and had prepared for such a thing. His arms were open for comfort and Naruto took what he could from his older lover. “You know how Sasuke is, Naruto,” Sakura’s tone was gentle as she sat up and laid a hand on Naruto’s arm. “You have to give him time, he loved you deeply for a long, long time. You can’t get over something in less than a day, you’d have to be heartless to do so. I know it’s not easy for you, but you have your friends to support you and I’m sure Itachi will be there as well.” It stunned Naruto at how well Sakura knew his lovers. She was a good friend who was always there when things went south. But she was also observant, almost to a fault it seemed. Sakura was always people watching, learning about them until she could predict their moves. It was sort of unnerving, but Naruto understood as she was still working towards her doctorate in psychology. He knew she would always maintain the habit and while it was annoying at times, he was grateful she had it since it came in handy. “I have to go, I’m meeting Ino for dinner for our anniversary,” she said, rising up from the couch gracefully. “Just call me if you need anything, Naruto.” Naruto tried to stand as well so he could see her out, but his legs gave out on him as he fell to the couch. Sakura’s only response was a raised eyebrow before she smiled and said she could let herself out. He was roped into a promise to call her later tonight even though it was her anniversary. Naruto didn’t want to intrude on Sakura’s time with Ino, knowing that the couple hardly had any time together due to her doctorate. The smile was returned with Naruto’s own hesitant one and before he knew it, she was gone from the apartment, the door clicking shut after her. He was alone now in his apartment, the silence was almost nerve wracking. At least when he had lived with his ex lovers, there was always something to do. But he couldn’t go back to them, not after everything that happened after his accident. Sighing after placing his head on the back of the couch, Naruto allowed his mind to wander. He didn’t want to dwell on his accident and all the misery it had brought him. It had only served to ruin his relationship and break his heart. The fact that Itachi and Sasuke’s support had began to run out only after half a year disturbed Naruto more than he could say. It was the little things at first that were almost unnoticeable, but for some reason caught his attention. At first, they were attentive, seeing to his every need and coddling him like a newborn babe. Naruto’s angry outbursts had curbed them to the point where they didn’t fuss over him unless it was over him collapsing. But as the months wore on, their attention dissipated. They would forget to place his medicine to where he could reach it, keeping it high in the tall medicine cabinet they had in the bathroom. He had to skip doses of his pain medication and be confined to his bed writhing in pain while they were at work. Naruto hadn’t told them about it at first, he didn’t want to seem needy or very dependant on his medication. It was just who he was and he wouldn’t be seen as someone who needed his drugs to function. The incidences weren’t discovered until Itachi had returned home from work, having forgotten some very important documents which was so unlike him. He had expected Naruto to be at the door waiting for him with the papers in hand. But when his younger lover hadn’t shown, he frowned and went searching for him. Remembering how Itachi had looked at him with pity sent a shudder through Naruto’s body. It was the last expression he had expected to see on the lovely face and Itachi was by his side in an instant as he writhed and cried in pain. It took the Uchiha only a few seconds to work out what had happened and snatch the pills Naruto needed to quell the intense pain he was in. Itachi had cancelled his meeting immediately to stay home and care for him. The action of him being there gave Naruto a small bit of hope that all wasn’t lost. It would be a few months before the hope was squashed into microscopic bits. Exasperated and tired of thinking about Itachi and Sasuke, Naruto tried to focus on other things like his class. After finally getting the green to return to work, he was as excited as ever to be back in the classroom where he felt he belonged. This year was going exceedingly well and he didn’t have a bad kid in the bunch, making his worries lessen in that aspect. There was one child he was worried about since his guardian was absent a lot and he was left with his grandmother who could barely take care of him. Suigetsu Hozuki was a bright kid who craved Naruto’s attention constantly, but knew how to behave himself and share the bright, cheery teacher. The teacher was furious that he couldn’t secure a meeting with his elusive uncle who Naruto knew was a marine biologist on the verge of some discovery. Suigetsu was very proud of his uncle and would brag about him even though he wasn’t around much. The eight year old was very outgoing about his uncle and the other kids would get frustrated listening to him and would tease that since no one had met his uncle, he didn’t exist. And when that happened, there was always a fight that broke out. The children weren’t being mean, they didn’t understand the concept of long hours of work and research and Naruto had to explain it to them. Naruto closed his eyes as his thoughts jumbled together. He wasn’t sure if he could survive on his own, but he would try with all his might. He didn’t want to dependant on anyone for anything. He had always been like that, ever since he was a small child. The loss of his parents had forced him into a state where he would try to take care of himself and wouldn’t allow his guardian, Kakashi, to help him at all. He had gone from the carefree child his dad knew to a solemn kid who tried to grow up too fast. When he had first lost his parents at four years old, Naruto thought he had been abandoned. He didn’t understand the concept of death at such a young age. So when his uncle Kakashi had picked him from daycare that day and explained to him his parents weren’t coming back and they were in a better place he had taken it the wrong way. For days he wouldn’t talk as they went through the funeral preparations and the funeral itself. His mother and father supposedly being lowered in the ground. His young mind couldn’t comprehend how the cold, dark earth was a better place and he had started throwing a fit in the middle of the burial ceremony. Kakashi had to take him away from the graveyard and sit in the car with him, missing his parents final moments of being above ground. He was cradled to his uncle's body as he cried and sobbed about how he wasn’t wanted anymore. Kakashi had tried his best to convince Naruto that he was wanted and loved, but there were some circumstances that didn’t allow for the people they loved to stay on earth. Naruto shook the memories from his head and decided that he could move now. He was well rested after having been sitting for at least an hour. Pushing himself up from the couch, he grabbed his cane and made his way into the kitchen. He piddled around, glad that Neji had remembered he couldn’t reach high places as he pulled some instant ramen from the cabinet. Naruto was strong and he was confident for the first time in a long while that he could survive on his own. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
