Chapter 1
He was back.He felt his heart stop for a split second before it began to pound erratically. He knew that while he was probably not the only one to realize this, he would definitely be one of the first. He senses just naturally, even after so long, honed in on his chakra.
His face shifted to a frown. Somethings off though, he thought.
He shook it off. After everything, all the fighting, the hoping...he was finally back. He had finally come home. But why? Why return now after more than half a decade and voluntarily as well?
But the only problem was that he couldn’t stay…wouldn’t. Sure he’d spent 6 years looking for the bastard and still believed in him. However he felt—no, he knew right now wasn’t a good time to reunite with his old rival. Something was coming not now but he felt like there would be a ‘huge’ change. And he preferred to trust instinct—and his instinct told him to leave.
Scratching the back of his blonde covered head, he starred into his cracked standing mirror. He had grown, maybe not the tallest of rookie 9 but at least he was taller than Sakura now. His blonde hair was still as unruly as ever and eyes still the color of the shinning sky. His “whiskers” however had deepened, adding to his animalistic features.
He smiled, I kinda look like dad.
His physique alone was not all that had grown. With all that he had been through and with Kurama’s ever supporting presence, he had grown wiser. Wiser than anyone would ever believe so he had to keep up the façade of the optimistic brash ninja that everyone knew. Otherwise they would know just how close he was to Kurama now. Not that his friends were unaware of him being the Jinchuuriki of Konoha or even unsupportive. He just had to keep certain secrets for the well-being of his friends.
Everyone had grown up, gotten strong in their own ways. He smiled sadly looking at his dresser in his bedroom, leaning on the wall lay a picture frame with the old team seven and beside it covered with a layer of dust was a nuke-nin head band.
Sasuke, how much have you grown?
She felt her heart skip. Frowning she turned to see if she was being followed. No one was paying her any special attention or looked suspicious. Where was this sudden anxiousness coming from? Face tightening, she wondered if perhaps someone was planning to attack Konoha as Pein had. She certainly hoped not, everyone knew Naruto left around this time and if the villagers didn’t have their hero near them they could panic.
Yet somehow, as her heart slowed she began to think that whatever had caused this feeling may not be a bad thing.
As if telling her not to worry, the wind blew her baby pink hair towards the direction she had been going. Sighing, she decided not to worry and to wait to discuss it with Naruto later. Pausing momentarily, she looked inside the flower shop at the blonde florist waiting inside.
Laughing, she opened the door and entered. I have better things to do anyway.
Only moments before…The gates were just up ahead, somehow they seemed smaller than before. Then again it had been years since seeing his home village, his sensei, his team mates, and more importantly—
“Naruto.” He whispered, looking at the afternoon sky. It was strange the way his voice sounded, well at least to him of course.
“Halt!” A Leaf-nin on gate duty held up a hand, stopping the black hooded stranger.
He sighed. Great. Kabuto’s potion would only last so long and he needed to see the Hokage.
“Remove your hood please, and state your business.” The second nin on gate duty said, eating a big bag of chips.
Choji…
He didn’t know the other ninja, but recognized him from somewhere. While the potion was an almost flawless disguise, he still hated having to lower his hood. He supposed he was just being stubborn so he removed his hood anyway. No point in getting hindered now.
Choji looked as if he would have died from choking on a chip, but he survived. As for the reason it was all thanks to Kabuto’s ridiculous potion. While the potion did indeed change his appearance so he would go unrecognized, he would have still liked for a better disguise. After all what kind of ninja, proud MALE ninja that is would want to disguise themselves as a woman.
She had bright dirty blonde wavy hair that stopped just at her shoulders. Her skin was sun kissed and soft. Her eyes so emerald it looked as if they were actually made from said stone.
Choji’s eye looked like they would pop out.
“I came here for vacation, hearing that it was the place to come to, but I didn’t expect to be questioned and…” She looked at Choji. “Gawked at.”
Choji immediately clamped his mouth shut.
The ninja in all black smirked, “Yes well that does happen when someone as attractive as you travels alone, does it not?”
She didn’t know what but something about this guy…where have I seen you before?
“Miss your name?”
“Akari Osaki.” She replied stoically.
She could feel the black haired ninja’s stare. The clothes he wore looked as if it had been shrunk; making it fit him like a second skin.
Why can’t I—ah that’s right! He was my replacement for team seven.
“Ok, have a nice stay miss.” Choji said, still munching on his damn chips.
She nodded her thanks, putting her hood back on so as not to attract any more attention.
“We should keep an eye on her, she’s suspicious to me.” Sai said, eyes following where the woman walked off to.
Choji laughed, “What? Why?”
Sai plastered a smile on his face, “Well I don’t really think that woman is a woman.”
Choji’s eyebrow rose, “Really, why’s that?”
Sai sighed, “Didn’t you notice the way she acted. She seemed almost surprised at the sound of her own voice whenever she said anything. The way she moved too was odd, as if she had to think about what way to position herself. Also, why wear such a very dark cloak?”
“I don’t know.” He stared at Sai for a moment, “Do you think we should tell Godaime about it?”
Sai nodded, “I’ll tell her, you watch the gate. You can do that right…fat ass?”
“SAI!!” Choji yelled, but only a cloud of dust was left of where Sai had been. He chuckled and starred at where Sai had just been. Well at least he even says anything to me.
Choji starred at the darkening sky, the rain wasn’t hitting yet but he knew it would rain. Hard.
Naruto I seriously hope you’re not gonna go to Suna today.
In all her life she’d never had thought an Uchiha, A MALE UCHIHA WAS CROSS DRESSING! She was trying her best not to laugh but the glare she was giving her didn’t help. It looked like she was pouting.
Damn, maybe I’m drunk. She looked at her desk. Nope, the sake bottles full.
“Godaime-sama.” The voice was dripping with mocking respect.
Tsunade smothered a grin, “Why are you a girl again?”
Sasuke tried not to growl at the clearly amused Hokage. He felt humiliated enough being a girl but she just kept poking at his pride over and over. To top that off this would be the fifth time explaining his disguise.
“I believe I’ve already explained the reason for my disguise to you numerous times.”
Tsunade sighed knowing that if she bugged him anymore the only answers she’d get would be ‘hn’. Getting more comfortable in her chair behind her desk she sobered up. She had already put up a sound proof seal so she didn’t have to worry about ninja’s learning that Sasuke was back...well maybe there were some who already knew? One of them was bound to know—no matter how much Sasuke tried to hide his chakra signature.
Naruto.
Her head snapped up as if she’d just realized something, “You do realize now that you are here it will be impossible for you to leave?” She glared.
“Of course.” Sasuke whispered, looking out the window as if searching for something or someone.
Nothing happened. No one came.
She smiled, Naruto you cow.
Giggling she pushed aside one of the flaps to Ichiraku, “One of these days you’re going to choke.” She suppressed a chuckle at Naruto’s surprised look.
“I can see it now,” sitting down on a wooden counter stool she continued. “Uzumaki Naruto, died because he ate ramen too fast.”
“Whaefer!” He growled.
Smack.
“OW! What the hell was that for?!” Naruto yelped ducking another swing at his head.
“Well, it’s rude to talk with your mouth full.” Sakura glared at the blonde half-heartedly.
They had grown real close together after Sasuke left the village. Left them. Now they both only saw each other as brother and sister. Naruto had gotten over his crush on Sakura, and thanks to Sasuke’s disappearance, he had changed a lot because of it. While she was ok with some of the changes, she worried about Naruto’s ever growing silent pauses. Sometimes he would stop talking or sometimes he wouldn’t even talk at all. And the only one who she knew he always talked to was Gaara.
“Sakura-chan are you alright?” Naruto asked, his eye brows scrunched together as he stared at her.
“Naruto what are you going to do for your birthday? I was hoping we could spend it together. That is of course if you’re still not going to Suna like you always do?” As she asked this she did not once looked at him but starred at her clenched fists.
Naruto felt his heart clench, You felt it too.
“Sakura-chan lets go talk somewhere more private?” He asked smiling at her.
Sakura couldn’t help return the smile, “Sure Naruto-kun.” She laughed when his eyes went wide at what she called him.
Naruto paid for his one bowl of ramen and headed out with Sakura.
The beauty of it was even more magnificent while sitting in the oak tree atop the Hokage Mountain. It looked as if someone had mixed the yellow juice of a lemon with the juice of a blood orange. Its warmth was soothing like a mothers embrace full of love.
Definitely. He thought, as he remembered the first time he met his mother, long after she had already died.
Smiling, he looked away from the setting sun over to stare at Sakura, who had grown silent. He didn’t love her as anything more than a sister now, nor would he. His heart was with someone else…had been with someone else for a long time now. As was hers.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” Brought back to the present, he smiled at his childhood friend.
“Yup, I always love coming up here just to think and watch the sun set.” He whispered as if afraid to disturb the wonderful moment of peace.
“Naruto, what did you wanna talk about?” Sakura asked still looking at the setting sun to give Naruto the opportunity to gather his thoughts. She knew it’d be hard to talk about Sasuke. She’d had trouble believing he’d come back finally after so long.
“Well, I wanted to tell—ask you if you could look after my apartment while I’m gone.”
“So you’re still going then.” It wasn’t a question.
But he answered anyway. “Yes.”
Sakura nodded. “You’re not running away though, right?”
He shook his head. He was really happy that Sasuke had come back but he needed to leave. He couldn’t, not go.
“Are you going to at least see him before you leave?” She asked, now she starred at him stoically.
“No.” Naruto sighed, “I can’t stay and you know it, it’d be too much. Please, you’ve got to understand.” He said through his tightened jaw.
She sighed and patted his knee, “What about Tsunade-sama, she won’t let you go knowing your closeness to Sasuke. She’ll say you’re running away.”
“She gave me a mission before he even came back—Wait, what do you mean ‘won’t let you go knowing your closeness to Sasuke’?” H growled, piercing Sakura with his bright ocean blue eyes.
“What do you mean, what do I mean?!” She yelled, “Naruto you’re not the same, not really. We think—”
“Who. Thinks. What?” He asked frowning at her.
“Naruto we’re just worried about you. You’re not the same anymore. You don’t really talk to Iruka anymore and even though he said not to tell you, he misses you a lot. Oh Naruto you’re like a walking shadow some days. Tsuande’s just worried and thinks being with Sasuke will help. Please, believe me.” She whispered into his ear and wrapped her arms around him.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize—look I promise to see him when I come back and straighten this out. But I…I just can’t see him yet. I’m sorry.” Doing the same he tightened his arms so she’d understand.
“Ok Naruto. I’m just sorry Gaara’s the only one you can go to sometimes. But at least you have him to help you out when I can’t.” She sighed and then patted his arm again. “So when are you leaving?”
“Well I was planning to go today but I’ll go tomorrow.” He replied softly while they released their holds on each other.
“What? Already? Damnit I’m not gonna be able to celebrate your birthday again!” Grumbling, her lips pouted at the unfairness of the situation.
“Sakura-chan…” Naruto laughed at her pouting face.
Meanwhile somewhere else…
Sasuke sighed as he contemplated his decision of coming back to Konoha. It wasn’t like he’d expected to be welcomed back with open arms but he subconsciously had expected something. Well more like he had expected to at least see someone from his old team. Looking down at his shackled hands and feet, he hoped this was the right chose. What if…no, there was no going back.
He touched his forehead, Itachi…
Dropping his hand he looked at the closed and chakra sealed door. Tsuande had not just shackled him but surrounded him with anbu. While he could not hear or see them, he could feel them outside his cement enclosed cell. He winced from trying to unconcisuouly to use chakra, forgetting that Tsunade had sealed it before locking him inside. While being locked up without the use of his chakra sucked, he knew he was being let off easy. He just wasn’t sure if that was because he was an Uchiha or because he had a previous relationship with those who were important to the Hokage. Sighing once again, he decided to just sleep and hope for the first time in a long time.
“He left.” Sasuke whispered, knowing that he was just repeating what the Hokage had said. But…what else was he supposed to say?
So far returning to Konoha was nothing like he had expected. The lack of sleep was also not helping his mood—damn those dreams. Now he was told the he could not see Naruto because he was gone. The opening of the door roused him from his sulking.
“Tsunade-sama, you asked for me?” Asked whoever had just entered to Hokage’s office.
Sasuke tensed in his seat, Sakura.
“Yes, I wanted to know if you saw Naruto before he left.” Tsunade smirked when she noticed Sakura glance at Sasuke with a frown.
“I saw him yesterday. He said he had a mission.” Sakura frowned at Tsunade, obviously confused as to why she was asking about Naruto in front of someone she’d never seen before.
Sakura glanced at the quiet person sitting in front of Tsunade again.
“Mission…” Tsunade frowned for a split second before nodding. “Yes I forgot he was given the mission since he usually leaves to Suna around this time.”
Sasuke was growing more annoyed by every passing minute. Why would Naruto go to Suna? And why would he go as often as Tsunade seemed to imply.
“Sasuke if you break the arm off of my chair I will personally finish the job of making you a girl!” Tsunade’s growl made him realize how tightly he was gripping the arm of the chair across from her. He immediately let go, ignoring the crushes in the wood he left.
Saukra had frozen at hearing Sasuke’s name. She looked at the beautiful woman sitting quietly and then back at a smirking Tsunade. Her eyes widened as she turned to look at the woman once again. What the hell is going—
Apparently, Tsunade couldn’t hold back any longer as she began to laugh so much she was about the smother herself with her own chest. Tsunade choked down her laughter seeing that she was being glared at by Sasuke and Sakura was staring at her like she had gone crazy.
“Right. Ok well it seems Sasuke here had to turn into to woman in order to safely get to Konoha—” Tsunade looked away from at still confused (and worried) Sakura to look at Sasuke.
Sasuke sighed but nodded for Tsunade to continue.
“Apparently, someone or something has been trailing him since he fought Itachi.” Tsunade continued, ignoring Sakura’s surprised expression. “He says that it has the same presence as that of a Jinchuuriki but somehow stronger. Sinister even.”
Sakura stared at the blonde woman who was apparently Sasuke. That explained why she had sensed his presence and couldn’t understand why. But why a woman? As if reading her mind, Tsuande continued.
“The reason he is a woman is thanks to Kabuto’s teachings. Apparently the four eyed brat learned how to change the body without using chakra. However it seems,” Tsuande smirked. “Sasuke only learned how to transform into a woman before he killed Orochimaru.”
Sighing, Sasuke leaned forward and stared at the Hokage. “Setting aside my temporary gender change. What I would like to know is, what the hell happens now?”
Tsunade leaned forward as well. “Well you little shit. That all depends on you, now doesn’t it?”
Sakura sighed. Damnit Naruto. Hurry up and come back.
I can’t wait to see Gaara.
Jumping from tree to tree Naruto laughed knowing Gaara was going to be mad at him for leaving Konoha. He wouldn’t be made because he was bother but because he’d see it as running away. Well that was fine with him because that was his friend’s opinion.
Friend.
Smiling, Naruto remembered when team Gai and what was left of team 7, had brought Gaara back to Suna when he was captured. After that Suna and Konoha had become very strong allies. Gaara and Naruto had become very good friends. Brothers even.
Naruto looked back towards Konoha.
Brothers.
