There was a pane of glass between them, but at least they could see each other. They both had a phone, which was awkward, but Naruto was used to it by now. It irked him that he couldn’t visit Sasuke in a private room, that he had to sit here in an uncomfortable chair while he talked to his boyfriend through a phone.

Their time was just about up and Naruto didn’t want to go, he wanted to stay and feel Sasuke’s arms around him. It had been a long two years already without the other’s touch, he didn’t know f he could bare another two. Four years hadn’t seemed like a long time when they were in court, but now, now it seemed like eternity.

“Keep your chin up, love,” Sasuke voice was steady over the phone. “I’ll be out before you know it.”

Naruto could only nod in response, not trusting his voice at the moment. He could hear the guards tell him that it was time to leave and he gave his boyfriend his goodbyes before hung up the phone.

When he was out of the room, Naruto’s shoulders slumped as he was led out of the prison. The guards knew him by now and had always addressed him by his first name. He gave the guard leading him out a wave as he left and made his way to the parking lot, looking for the beat up car that he had to drive.

Since Sasuke’s incarceration, he had to sell their nice SUV to pay the bills. It had been hard adjusting to a life without Sasuke, but what was harder, was adjusting to working with the public. He worked in a local bookstore and it was very trying, nothing at all like heading charity events.

He slid into the orange junker and had to coax it into starting. He didn’t know how many lies he told Sasuke, but he hoped that he could forgive him. Naruto didn’t want him to worry about him while he was in jail, the stress of such a place was enough on his shoulders already and Naruto didn’t want to add to them.

Naruto smiled brightly as the woman cussed at him, letting him know her displeasure at the lack of selection of John Grisham novels. He had tried to explain her that they were currently sold out and the next shipment was on backorder, but she didn’t allow him to interrupt.

The manager was out on lunch and wouldn’t be back for another forty minutes and Naruto wasn’t sure how to placate her. He didn’t have any authority here and it ate at him as he stood there and took the verbal beating. If he had been in his old life, he would have already told her where to go and just how to get there as well.

Taking a deep breath as the yelling stopped and now every customer in the store was staring at them, Naruto opened his eyes and was still smiling, even though he didn’t feel like it.

“As I said before, Ma’am, there is nothing we can until the shipment arrives. I can put your name down for one of the copies and it’ll be reserved for you,” he said in a reasonable tone, hoping that it wouldn’t fuel her fire more.

“Right and just when is the shipment coming in?” She asked snidely as she leaned closer, her eyes daring Naruto to step one toe out of line.

“In about three weeks,” he answered. “The books are in high demand, we’ve tried to order from other sources, but none of the other companies can keep up.”

“I’ll be taking my business elsewhere if those books aren’t here on time,” she spat as she gave Naruto her information and stormed out of the store, the bell jingling angrily in her wake.

The other patrons spared him a curious glance, but said nothing as they went back to perusing the shelves. He ran a hand through his hair as he let an exasperated sigh escape his lips.He was tired of dealing with people like that woman, especially since he didn’t have Sasuke to go home to and melt into.

He had never thought that this kind of job would be so frustrating, he always thought the people who held these kind of jobs had it easy. But after the first few days, he had a newfound respect for everyday workers and hopefully he would change Sasuke’s views as well.

The other customers slowly trickled out as they paid for their books, none of them making a complaint and thanking him as he checked them out. Naruto just couldn’t bring himself to care, he went about his work like a robot and repeated the line he’d been taught as he checked them out.

Normally he would engage people in conversation, but today he was just too drained to put any effort into it. The bell jingled as the last of the customers left the register, happily chatting up the newcomer.

Naruto looked up from the counter and noticed that his boss was back. He smiled wearily as Jiraiya approached the counter, a large drink in his hand as he took in his employee’s state. He sighed as he watched the young man sway on his feet.

“Go home, brat. You look like you’re gonna pass out,” he gruffed.

“But...” Naruto tried to protest, but was shot down.

“No, you’re exhausted and I won’t have you working like this,” Jiraiya argued as he pushed Naruto to the back to gather his things.

And Naruto couldn’t find it in himself to argue. He grabbed his things and left, saying a quick goodbye to Jiraiya before taking off into the busy street. He was grateful that he didn’t have to drive to work, the bookstore was just down the street from his apartment, which he happened to luck out on.

It seemed that it was the only thing that was right in his life at the moment. He had been searching for a place to live since he couldn’t afford the penthouse they lived in anymore. He was at his wits end when he happened to come upon the apartment and was able to snatch it up.

He shuffled through the everyday traffic on the sidewalk, ignoring the people around him as his feet barely left the ground. Naruto didn’t remember the trek back to his apartment, only that Sasuke didn’t come greet him when he called out for him and those few moments made him remember that his lover was still in jail.

Sighing, he drug his tired body to his bed and plopped down, falling asleep as soon as he hit the mattress, forgetting to strip his shoes off.

“Sasuke Uchiha, you are found guilty on the charge of not registering in Suna for being a sex offender.” The judge announced, his gavel hitting the wooden block.

Naruto sat beside Sasuke as the judge delivered the sentence. He immediately stood to spout bullshit, but his boyfriend's hand on his arm kept him from doing so. His dark gaze told him not to argue and Naruto couldn’t help but glare as the policemen approached them.

Sasuke gave him one last kiss before he was cuffed and taken away. Naruto would have collapsed if it hadn’t been for the lawyer they had hired. The man was the best in his field and still was unable to get Sasuke out of a jail sentence.

He knew the story behind the sex offense charges and Naruto thought it was total bullshit. Sasuke had been sixteen when he first had sex with one of his male classmates. When the other boy’s parents found out, Sasuke had been slapped with sexual assault charges and had been sent to juvenile hall.

Despair hit Naruto as he realized he didn’t know how to survive without Sasuke. Both of them had come from a well to do family and never had to work, living off an allowance their fathers gave them.

But with this incident and the Uchiha name at stake, Sasuke had been disowned by his own father early on in the trials. The ‘scandal’ had been covered from the beginning and Naruto thought that their relationship wouldn’t survive the storm. But it had and now his boyfriend was being carted off to jail and he couldn’t help but wonder if they would survive the four year sentence.

The first week of Sasuke’s sentence, Naruto had cleared out their condo. He had separated their belongings into three groups, things that should be kept, sold, or given to the Salvation Army. It was the hardest thing he had to do, but in order to live, it had to be done.

The second week, he had visited Sasuke and given him the excuse that he had been working on several charity projects. He couldn’t let the other know the truth, that they were now broke and Naruto had been searching for a job.

He kept everything from Sasuke, always putting on airs and coming up with stories to tell the other. His smile wasn’t out of place when he visited the prison. It was enough to just see Sasuke to get a true smile on his face.

The weeks had turned into months and Naruto had found himself with a job and a tiny apartment. But at least the apartment was in a good neighborhood and right down the block from his job. He was still new at everything and kept fudging things up, but to Sasuke, he was still the wonderful charity runner he had met in college.

Naruto was brought out of his daydream as the rainfall became heavier, the fat drops hitting the shop window with a loud plop. He couldn’t visit the prison today, even though it was the anniversary of Sasuke’s imprisonment.

Jiraiya had taken ill and there was no one else to cover the shop. So Naruto had volunteered to work, the extra hours would be most welcomed. Though guilt filled him that he had sacrificed the visiting hours for a couple hundred dollars. But the court costs were becoming harder to pay and there was no one to help him.

Itachi had tried, but even his reach could only go so far before his father reigned him in again. Naruto had missed him the most out of the Uchiha family. Itachi had slipped him money every now and again, Naruto had refused at first, but had caved when the pressure had become too much.

He was too far away from his other friends for them to help. Their visits were only once to twice a year and even then, Naruto’s time had been limited. He sighed as watched people avoid the shop, instead ducking into the cafe across the street.

He went back to reading the book splayed out in front of him. He had already cleaned up the shop and finished all the chores for the day. So he had figured that he could at least read to entertain himself on such a dreary day. A few minutes later, the bell rung on the door.

“Welcome to Icha, Icha Bookshop. If you need help, just ask.” Naruto answered as he didn’t look up from his book.

“Is that the kind of greeting you’re giving me, moron?” A familiar voice drifted through the air and Naruto looked up in amazement. His eyes tearing at the sight of his boyfriend in a pair of jeans and a plaid shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

“Sasuke?” He asked in disbelief as he scrambled from behind the counter and cautiously approached the other, wondering if he had fallen asleep and was dreaming.

“In the flesh,” Sasuke answered as he drew Naruto closer, kissing the blond soundly.

Naruto clung to his boyfriend’s solid frame, automatically noticing the difference in his body structure. But he didn’t mind that, all that mattered was that Sasuke was here, kissing him for all he was worth.

“How?” He asked breathless when Sasuke finally released his lips.

“Hn, this was a surprise for you. I was released on good behavior. I was going to tell you when you came today, but you didn’t show...” Sasuke trailed as he traced a finger along Naruto’s face. “And I find you here working, Naruto. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you had enough to worry about. I couldn’t...” Naruto sobbed as he buried his face into the strong chest, sobbing. “I couldn’t worry you more. I didn’t want to stress you. I’ve been doing fine on my own. But...it was so lonely.”

“Shhh, love. I’m here now and we’ll do this together,” Sasuke whispered as he nuzzled the blond locks. Both men taking comfort in the fact that there was no longer a window between them and that they could touch one another again. They embraced a while longer, not wanting to give up the other up just yet as the downpour outside lessened and sunlight began to shine through the dark clouds.
