Sandstorms are unpredictable, dangerous dust storms that frequently occur in the desert surrounding the village Hidden in The Sand, as well inside the village itself. Sand, thrown into the air by strong surges of wind makes it difficult to see, move or breathe. It can reduce visibility to almost nothing, and is capable of moving whole sand dunes. Sandstorms are extremely dangerous and should be avoided by all travelers, shinobi and civilian alike, by all means possible.
The Hidden Villages Travel Guide, Second Edition.
Naruto had long ago come to realize that running away from a problem only got you deeper into the mess, and not in any way closer to resolution. He preferred to take his problems head on as the came, no matter how complicated. In along run, it usually worked out for the best.
But nobody made instruments to burn the person out of one's heart yet - and for the first time in Naruto's life, even Shikamaru had no answers for him.
"Is there absolutely no one else?" He clenched and unclenched his feasts – a nervous habit of late – looking at Minato's face above the pink top of Sakura's head. His father too did not offer him any advice; nor that he could.
"No."
Short and irrevocably final.
"You know I can't go to Suna. You know I can't see him… just yet."
"I know that there is a mission that needs to be taken care of. I know that I have a jonin perfectly suited for the job. And this is all I know, Naruto."
He took the scroll from her hands and stuffed it inside the front pocket of his uniform jacket. Gave Sakura another pleading look hoping to change her mind still.
"Is there an actual mission? He finally asked, defeated. "Or am I just playing the mailman?"
"I've heard there is a sandstorm coming." Sakura replied with a quiet sort of wistfulness that once again made Naruto feel grateful for not stepping in to fill granny Tsunade's shoes ten years ago. "The biggest one in decade. Be extra careful, yes?"
He stalled, hesitating briefly before closing the office door behind him, and smiled a ghost of his usual grin.
"Don't worry about me, Hokage Sama. I know my way around the desert."
Magnificent dunes stood as calm and tall as ever when Naruto approached the entrance gates of Sunakagure. Not even a hint of breeze anywhere. But he knew from experience how deceitful this stillness could be - how suddenly the whether could change. He had witnessed the transformation before being caught on a wrong side of the desert storm in the past. It was coming soon. Naruto felt it in his heart; in his bones; in his soul.
Stopping to take a drink from the water pouch Naruto took a full breath of hot air, filling his lungs with desert. It smelled lush and bittersweet, like sand, and dust, and Gaara. It used to be a second home– Naruto did not realize how much he missed it until now.
"Come quick." Gaara called pulling him by the hand into the dark mouth of the underground cave hidden between the dunes looming above and all around them . "The sandstorm is coming."
Naruto did not notice anything out of the ordinary about the tranquil surroundings, but had taken Gaara's word for it. Surely, a boy born in the desert new better. He did not mind the shelter himself – anything to be closer to Gaara, even if only for few minutes. He had come a long way from a brash, overloud teenager who dreamt of marrying a pink haired kunoichi.
Inside the crowded cave they ended up pressed close together, face-to-face. Naruto heard nothing save for the beating of his own heart. The need to consummate this attraction fogged his mind. He felt dizzy, and elated, and frightened to death at the same time -no other man or woman made him feel this way before; no other man or woman ever would again.
"The storm?" he repeated, inching their faces closer. "I did not notice anything unusual."
"It comes unexpectedly. You just have to be on a lookout for it. And see."
"And what did you see?"
Gaara laughed – a joyous, melodious sound that echoed far deep inside the cave. For a reason unknown, he found Naruto's enthrallment amusing.
" I see that you are dying to fuck me right now. Among other things."
It went against Naruto's nature keep many secrets – and he did not think he could contain this one even if he tried.
"And you don't? Want me to?"
"Oh Naruto. I've wanted you to long before you knew what fucking is all about."
Stripped of his status, responsibilities, obligations, - clothes - Gaara, in the end of all things, had only been a boy - a lovely, lovely boy - big green eyes and dark, fluttering lashes - but wanting, loving, , craving Naruto as much as Naruto did him. Naruto tugged on the reddish lock and tucked behind Gaara's ear. It felt slick and springy between his fingertips. Wrapped another around his index finger, rubbing the thumb over the full, wind -chapped lips.
" I am so fucking in love with you." He confessed, voice betraying him in the most important of moments and going completely hoarse.
"I know you are. Stop talking now, Naruto; It never did you any good."
Naruto did not talk after that – much.
Need ignited at the center of his being springing upwards like a red-hot fire, blazing, blazing, blazing from the contact with naked skin, - finally; from Gaara's scent filling his mind; from the sweet intensity of his answering desire. It was just about this right now –fucking. Staking a claim. Possessing, owning. Letting the world know that Gaara belonged to him. Him, and no one else. The rest could come later.
There would be time for slow lovemaking and candlelight dinners, long walks after sunset together, laughing and holding hands. Time for kissing, and laughing, and calming conversations about nothing. There would be time for it later, Naruto thought. Today was just the beginning.
"There are not really any signs." Gaara admitted afterwards, when they learned how to speak again." Of the storm."
"Oh?" Naruto raised his eyebrows. "How do you know then?"
"You just have to feel it." Gaara placed a hand over Naruto's naked chest, green eyes alight with mischief. He rarely showed this side of him –young and carefree. Unguarded. " Here, in you heart. In you bones; In your soul; It will speak to you. And then you will have time to get away."
"You'll have to teach me." Naruto decided." Sounds like a useful skill to have."
"
He showed his papers at the gate to be granted a passage, recognizing the face of the shinobi on duty. The man recognized him as well.
"The sandstorm is coming." Came his warning followed by a big, welcoming smile. " Welcome back home, Naruto Sama."
"Thanks." Naruto did not have the heart to disagree. "Is Gaara… Kazekage still staying at the same place?"
"What reason would he have for leaving?'
"Maybe his wife wanted a bigger place. Maybe she did not want to stay at the same house as her husband's very close siblings. Maybe he just needed a change."
"No reason, I suppose." He replied on impulse, smiling in return. "Better head down there I guess. Would not want to get caught in that sandstorm."
"True, that. It's going to be a big one."
"Naruto!" Ever the tomboy, Temari squeezed him in a bone-crushing hug. "What are you doing here?"
"Mission." Wearily, Naruto disentangled her from himself and dropped the dusty backpack on the floor. Reached to check the presence of Sakura's scroll. He was terrified of the possibility of seeing Gaara again - thrilled at the thought that he might.
"How is Gaara?" He asked after a moment hesitation. "Still happily married?"
"Married?"
The time, and Naruto's heart with it - stopped for a few torturous moments.
"He is not?"
"Oh Naruto.' Temari gave him a sad shake of her head, perky ponytails bobbing with each movement. "He played you so well."
He could not quite place the expression in her eyes – something between sadness and bewilderment; something akin to relief; maybe even hope.
"Why did he lie to me, Temari?"
She averted her eyes – never a good sign.
"There's been an accident."
"What kind… of an accident?'
"A fire in the academy. " Temari continued." Twenty genin were inside -the first day of school year. Nobody knows how the fire started, and why– but it spread so fast, Naruto. Gaara tried to contain it with his sand, but it was just- too large. He went inside with the rest of the shinobi trying to get the kids out.. Stayed there for too long – a little girl got trapped by the desk the fell on top of her. The roof collapsed on them."
"Did she live?" With effort, Naruto swallowed – his throat felt parched, scratchy; tongue - barely responsive. But he needed to know. Everything.
"Not a scratch on her. Smoke inhalation, shock. She was back at school in a few days."
"And Gaara?"
" He's been badly burned. Sixty five percent of his body. The sand shield held to protect his face and hands, but not the rest. It's pretty bad, Naruto."
Naruto took a deep, calming breath; let the air out – it would be wrong to unleash his anger on Temari ; but she was supposed to be looking out for Gaara. She was supposed to let Naruto know.
"And nobody told me?"
Temari blanched.
"I am sorry." She commiserated. " We thought he told you. As you very well know yourself, my brother is a private person. We did not want to make it worse."
"Can I go see him?"
"I think you should, Naruto. " I think it's about time you did."
"
"You lied to me." Naruto accused.
He studied Gaara's face soaking up the clean lines of black clad figure standing unmoving by the grand window of his study, green irises widened in surprise.
"I thought it would be for the better." Gaara finally offered with immense reluctance.
Naruto could see the unforgiving burn marks peeking from where the cuffs ended near Gaara's pale wrists. Above the modest collar of black bodysuit.
" I did not want to burden you with an … invalid. I thought you deserved better then this."
"Who gave you a right to decide what's the better for me?" Naruto contradicted too harshly. "I lived three years in agony imagining you did not love me anymore. Tell me… how is that better?"
'For that, I am sorry." Gaara turned away from him looking out of the window of his study at the dunes outside. The clear night skies appeared peaceful, still. "But I still think you deserve better."
"You have to realize. " Naruto regarded him half wryly approaching the figure by the window from behind. "That you are not always in control. Of anything really. Not of my life; not even of yours. You can't decide for other people what's best for them. While it defines who you are, this obstinacy of yours …" He planted a light kiss on the top of auburn head." …Is one thing that I always feared. You have to learn how to tone it down a notch from now on, love."
"
"It's not pretty." Gaara cast him a warning look over his shoulder.
"I don't care. "
" I don't want you to be scared… of me."
"I would never be scared of you." Naruto argued vehemently undoing the top buttons of concealing all black shirt. The anger he felt before, - fury, fled his soul, filling the void with need; love; want. With newfound patience he studied the new texture of Gaara's skin diagrammed with raised scars, gliding over the few spots in between that remained unmarred with his fingertips; There weren't many.
Stroking; Mapping; Possessing all over again.
"I love you so fucking much. ..How could you ever think I would be happy without you?"
Gaara sighed and braced himself against the thick window glass, holding on to the ornate hinges with both hands. The storm was close. Naruto could feel it in his heart. In his bones; in his soul; but they were safe in here, behind the walls of Gaara's house, inside the serene space of his sleepy study, away from the world. Naruto kissed the smooth, freckled patch of skin above Gaara's left shoulder blade, hiding his face in the crook of his neck when he came. The weather outside seemed to be winding down; how very appropriate.
"The storm is coming." Gaara murmured with content in his voice. It was as much emotion as he was ready to show. "The biggest one in a decade."
"The storm? Naruto laughed, incredulously. Impossible. " Are you kidding?"
"What about?"
"It already passed. Did not you notice the fucking hurricane outside the window?"
" I did …not."
"You look flashed, Kazekage Sama. Is that from rapture or undignified embarrassment?"
"Naruto." Gaara huffed. " Shut up."
"
"You had something for me, no?"
Early in the morning they strolled through the village on the way to Kankuro's new residence. The fool got himself married again. Naruto still remembered the fiasco the last marriage had been – hell, the whole Fire Country did. Kankuro needed to grow up, Naruto secretly thought, but refrained from speaking his mind out loud. Gaara was as protective of his family as they were of him.
"Sure did. " Naruto slapped himself on the forehead. " The scroll. From Sakura. I guess I was otherwise preoccupied yesterday. Here."
Gaara took a bite out of his apple, took a look – and handed it back to Naruto.
"What is it?"
"It's addressed to you."
Naruto unrolled it with a healthy dose of apprehension. Saw Sakura's chicken scratch splattered all over the cream surface of the paper – she had horrible handwriting for a girl, let alone Hokage.
"Naruto. If I am being correct in my assumptions –and I usually am – you will not be coming back to Konoha for a while. I miss you terribly, already; but I only want you to be happy. You will still visit us, I am sure - they don't have Ichiraku in Suna after all.
"I also hope you understand why I did not tell you about Gaara. Obviously, I knew. But it was not my place to do so, and you simply would not make it to Suna in one piece."
" I also want you to know – because I can feel you wondering from time to time – that you did make a correct decision ten years ago. I still think it's a woman's job to do. And you never did have the right mind for politics. So don't worry about me. And be happy, Naruto. You, out of all people I know, deserve it the most. "
"Love,
"Sakura."
P.S. I am honorably discharging you from the military forces of Konohakagure. I hope your boyfriend will help you find another job."
"What was that all about?"
"I've been honorably discharged." Naruto scowled. " He did not know if he liked the sound of it.
"Oh." Gaara shrugged. "I can reinstate you. To Sunakagure's elite shinobi forces."
"Right now?"
"Sure. Reinstated."
"Good. Would not want to be freeloading or anything."
" Of course not."
"
"You are right Sakura chan. You are ten times the Hokage then I could ever be." Naruto replied silently in his head, smiling. " And I am. So very, very happy. Sayonara. And thank you."
