Summary: Sai spends his first christmas with Naruto. Will things turn out uneventful or absolutely wonderful?
Christmas with you
The aroma of delicious food swirled around him and Naruto had to keep himself from popping
open the oven and taking a slice of oven roasted turkey. The turkey was nearly done, but nearly done wasn't the same as fully-cooked and Naruto had no desire to spend his Christmas Eve in the hospital due to salmonella poisoning.
Glancing around the living room, decorated with a Christmas tree carefully selected from the tree lot three blocks away from their home, Naruto grinned. This was going to be the best first Christmas that he and Sai ever had.
Naruto walked over the three and adjusted one of the ornaments. He fiddled with the round bulb for a few seconds before snatching his hand back. Those Christmas tree lights sure did get hot. He thought about unplugging the lights, but the twinkling colors of red, blue, green, and yellow really brought everything together.
Stepping into the kitchen, Naruto went to retrieve a couple of wine glasses. He decided that tonight would be a perfect night to have a glass of wine with dinner. He couldn't remember if you were supposed to drink red or white wine with poultry and vaguely thought about mixing the two before deciding against it. Red wine looked better in a glass than white wine, so that was the one they were going to drink.
Today was the beginning of a lot of new things for Sai, it was his very first christmas with Naruto. They had been together for almost 8 months. After standing in line for hours the day after black friday Sai had finally gotten the gift Naruto has wanted when the first started going out. On their third date Naruto and Sai were walking through a festival of venders. There was one vender that had cool swords, one in particular had a "Uzumaki" swirl on it, which Naruto thought was interesting. They couldn't afford it at the time. Sai ended up saving money for the sword and bought it for him.
The day of christmas had started off pretty good. Sai had gotten up early and started making small dishes for dinner later that evening, when he checked the turkey, he added a little seasoning and pepper before leaving a note on Naruto's pillow telling him to not touch the turkery under any circumstances. That left the errands he had to do before getting the presents wrapped and put underneath their tree that still needed to be decorated. Sai told Naruto he would be back before 3 o'clock in the afternoon to help put the ornaments on the tree, which left about 5 1/2 hours to kill with the errands.
First was to get some ingredients from the store - since when was the market open on christmas? Sai had no idea why. But it worked in his favor. Grabbing a cart to the left of the entrance to the market; Sai headed straight towards the produce isle. He needed more apples and some more spinach and Lettuce. Naruto may not eat them or like them. But he was gonna make sure Naruto ate them for this occasion, even If he had to feed him himself. That was checked off of his list. Now he needed vanilla extract and then he was done.
Checking off the list one more time to make sure Sai didn't forget anything he noticed his Vanilla was gone and saw a woman in the corner of his eye walk off with it. "Excuse me ma'am, but that was in my cart." Sai said in the nicest way possible, smiling to the lady. She gave him a look that said 'is this guy for real?' then she noticed the look on his face not fading; just getting more creepy by the minute. "Just take it!" The woman screeched running away. "It always works." Sai smirked.
Naruto was busy switched the switch near the front door up and down, marveling at the way the lights on the house flicked on and off. In his opinion, he had done a fantastic job with the lights. He was sure that the rest of the neighborhood was envious of the lit up rock star Santa Claus cranking a guitar version of Jingle Bells on his front lawn. If only he had been able to get the drum solo Rudolph! But the store had sold out of them.
Naruto switched the lights off once more, wanting to wait until it was nice and dark before he switched them on again. His stomach grumbled and he glanced at the kitchen doorway. The turkey was taking way too long. He doubted Sai would mind (or know) if he went in there and adjusted the temperature a little bit.
Making his way into the kitchen, Naruto set the oven temperature thirty degrees higher than what it called for and smirked. Soon he would be feasting on turkey and all the trimmings. Stepping-more like running-out the kitchen, Naruto practically threw himself on the couch. There were probably still other things he could do, but he wanted to pretend to be resting until it was time to eat.
When Sai walked in the house, he heard Naruto's snoring and the smoke detector going off. But why was it going off? He set the timer for around 6:00 pm - that couldn't be right? Dropping the grocery bags to the side of the door, sai rushed to the kitchen. Why was the temperature higher than what he originally put it at? Taking a pair of oven mitts Sai removed the turkey from the oven - it was so hot he almost dropped the whole thing so he hurriedly dropped it on the stove and turned on the cooler. "Naruto?" Sai called.
Naruto's eyes snapped open and he covered his ears. What the hell was that noise? Oh, wait. He knew what that noise was. He'd heard it just a few weeks ago when he attempted to fry fish for the first time and let the grease get too hot.
"Uh... yeah?" Naruto answered and rushed into the kitchen as if he had no clue of what was going on. "I was taking a nap. Did something happen? The fire alarm is going off," he said as if Sai couldn't hear that on his own.
"You messed with the temperature didn't you Naruto?" Sai smirked knowing full well he would win this argument.
"No, I didn't," Naruto lied. "How could I have when I just woke up? I was asleep the whole time."
"Naruto I know you weren't asleep the whole time. Your breathing patterns don't match up to when you're asleep." Sai started. "You breathe heavier when you are pretending to sleep then when you are actually asleep."
"I don't know what you're talking about. I breathe the same way all the- What the hell happened to the turkey?" Naruto shouted. "It's black."
"The temperature was tampered with. So it overcooked." Sai explained. "Look it's okay Naruto the turkey may be ruined but that doesn't mean we can't have dinner!" Sai smiled reassuringly.
Naruto quirked a brow. "I guess you're right." He smiled at Sai and slung a hand over his shoulder. "Did you have a good time while you were out?"
"It was uneventful, but I got stuff done, so that's all that matters." Sai said turning the timer off of the ticker. "Naruto can you take the dough out of the fridge?"
"Okay," Naruto said. He was still wondering how they were going to have Christmas dinner when the turkey was blacker than the bottom of his shoe. He grabbed the dough out of the refrigerator and sat it down on the counter. "It'll be dark enough for me to turn the lights on soon." He grinned. "The neighbors are so jealous."
Sai took the dough out of it's plastic wrap. He took a pair of scissors cutting it into a small ball, then flattened it with the palms of his hands. Taking he scissors and cutting the flat dough one more time, he shaped into into a rectangle.
"Do you see what I'm doing Naruto?" Sai asked, rolling the dough into crescent shapes.
"Mmhm," Naruto said even though he wasn't paying any attention. He had never been much of a cook. He didn't like cooking. He liked eating. Sai was a good cook though. "How much longer before you'll be done?" He wanted to cuddle up on the couch with Sai while he laughed at how envious the neighborhood would be once he switched the lights on again.
"Just give me 3 minutes and I will be finished with the rolls." Sai said, putting the 5 he had already made on the baking sheet. "Go sit on the sofa, I will be there in a bit. Okay?"
"Yeah, yeah," Naruto muttered and left the kitchen. He stepped back into the living room and clicked the light switch a few more times. Why wouldn't it get dark quicker? He wanted the lights to be on before people got too full of turkey and pie to stay awake and fully appreciate his masterpiece.
Plopping down onto the couch, Naruto yawned and closed his eyes. Maybe if he took a quick nap, when he woke up, it would be nightfall.
Sai put the finishing touches on the rolls; added a little butter and put them in the oven. Grabbing a wine bottle and popping the cork off, sai poured himself a glass of red wine. "Naruto?" Sai asked walking over to Naruto quietly as to not wake him.
Naruto cracked an eye open and smiled lazily at Sai. "Hey." He eyed the wine glass and snickered. "Getting started without me, eh? Where's mine?"
"I see you already had one glass of wine. You left it sitting there on the table." Sai smirked
"Psh. Drinking one glass of wine is like drinking a glass of Kool-Aid to me. I need at least three to even get a proper buzz. You should know that by now."
"I'll get you a glass, do you want an 1869 Chateau Lafite Rothschild? I just bought a bottle at auction a few months ago." Sai asked getting up from the sofa, setting his glass down on the table. "Can you get the box of ornaments that are in the closet?"
"Doesn't matter to me." Wine was wine to Naruto. As long as it gave him a decent buzz, he was happy with it.
Naruto stood up from the sofa and went to retrieve the ornaments. He didn't question why they were still in the closet while everything else was currently on the tree. In fact, he wasn't sure if they could even fit another ornament on the three without it toppling over. But Sai was an artist and was into stuff like that.
Naruto found the box and sat it down on the coffee table. "How are you going to make these things fit?" he asked. "I think if we add anymore the whole tree is going to fall through the floor."
"There's not that much on the tree Naruto. You're overexagerating." Sai chuckled bringing the wine to Naruto. He handed him his glass and sat back down on the sofa. "The food will be ready in about an hour and a half. Do you wanna decorate the tree some more?"
Naruto took the offered glass and stared at the tree. He had put what he thought was every ornament they had in the house on the tree. Clearly Sai had been drinking since sunrise if he didn't think that what was on the tree wasn't much.
"I guess so," Naruto answered. He supposed decorating the tree beat being bored while he waited for the sun to go down or the food to finish cooking.
"When I went home for a bit last week, I brought back some old ornaments from my childhood, they're the ones on the top." Sai said pointing to three Homemade ornaments. "I made them in the orphanage. "
Naruto carefully plucked one of the ornaments out of the box. "Then we'll put them up," he said softly. He held one of the ornaments gently in his hand. "Where should we put this one?" He stared down at the ornament, unable to imagine how difficult it must have been growing up in an orphanage. Sure, Naruto had suffered his own share of difficulty growing up, but he still had a few precious people back then that had made life richer for him.
"Anywhere is fine. After we hang some of these, we can put the tree topper." Sai said with a small smile.
"Okay," Naruto said, smiling back at Sai.
"Can you hand me the black paint brush ornament?" Sai asked pointing to the left of the box. Laying on top of a few icicles was a beautiful hand crafted black paint brush. The details and the intricate designs only enhanced the look of it. "I love this Ornament, It was a gift from a lady that worked at the orphanage, She would give me crayons and markers to color with and one day, I used a paint brush and everything just flowed right. I felt like if i wanted to I could create a whole nother world, with just a stroke of my paint brush. " Sai said admiring the ornament. "I am gonna put it at the top of the tree, with the kyuubi." Sai smiled, getting up from his seat on the floor and putting the small ornament on the tree.
Naruto watched Sai place the ornament on the tree. He was surprised that Sai was sharing this part of himself. Of course, Naruto knew some things about Sai's past but not everything and certainly not this.
Sai turned around and saw Naruto with that look on his face he always gets when he's deep in thought. "What're you thinking about?" Sai asked moving to the other side of the tree to get more tinsel.
Naruto shrugged. "I was just thinking that we still have a lot to learn about each other." He smiled and pulled Sai closer. "But lucky for us, we have plenty of time."
"Indeed we do. Do you wanna open your present before or after dinner?" Sai asked rubbing Naruto's back tenderly.
"After," Naruto answered. He figured after burning the turkey, the least he could do is be patient and eat before opening his gift.
"Okay, well the croissant rolls are almost done. They don't take very long to cook. " Sai replied. "I'm gonna take the pies out of the fridge. Join me at the table?"
Naruto nodded his head and followed after Sai. They reached the kitchen and Naruto settled himself into his seat. Everything smelled good. Even the turkey that he had blackened earlier.
"How'd you learn to cook so well, anyway?" Naruto asked. It should have been a law made to keep Naruto away from a stove and yet Sai cooked everything wondefully.
"I learned right after I was adopted. The people who adopted me were chefs at a local restaurant. So when I asked them if they could teach me, that's how it all happened. I ended up falling in love with cooking just like art." Sai smiled reminiscing.
Naruto smiled as well. Sai's smile always had that effect on him. "Is there anything that you're not good at?" he asked.
"I'm not good at making several things actually, like baked alaska, certain pies, and I can't boil an egg properly to save my own life." Sai chuckled.
"All the same, you're still perfect to me," Naruto said. He leaned forward and cupped Sai's cheeks with his hands. "Even if you did burn the turkey," he whispered playfully. Of course, they both knew that Naruto's tinkering with the oven had burned the turkey, but Naruto had no plans to ever admitting to it.
"You burned the turkey. That has you written all over it!" Sai taunted.
"Don't know what you're talking about," Naruto said in a sing-song tone and smiled once more."Merry Christmas, Sai," he whispered.
"Merry Christmas, Naruto." Sai replied and kissed Naruto on the lips.
'I'm happy and content, being with Naruto. Brother I wonder what you would think of him if you had met him before you died.' Sai smiled knowing the many years to come would be well worth it, if he could spend it with Naruto.
